Tampa and the invisible Southern white male

TAMPA — With Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in the history books, and a three-day meeting of Democrats in Charlotte only days away, one bankable fact is clear.

The modern convention – at least the part you see on television — is less about what a political party is, and more about who it needs.

As a result, there were many dogs that didn’t bark at the just-ended Republican National Convention.
Same-sex marriage was never disparaged, except in the vaguest terms. Illegal immigration received only a rare mention. When it did surface, the word “illegal” had disappeared. The tea party – the most important political movement of this young century – didn’t exist in Tampa. At least, not by name, and not on television.

The edges were smoothed on anything that might offend skittish independents needed if Romney is to win in November.

But the biggest dog that didn’t bark in Tampa – perhaps “howl” is the better word – was the Southern white male. Of the dozens and dozens of personalities that populated an Isaac-shortened roster of speakers, only a handful came from the GOP’s most reliable and dominant voter base.

Ted Cruz, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate from Texas, was part of the non-stop parade of Hispanics on the stage.

Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell, both U.S. senators from Kentucky, could be dismissed as mere border-state figures. To cite former Gov. Jeb Bush is to reignite the debate over whether Florida truly qualifies as part of the South.

And before you point to that Confederate veteran, the outlaw Josey Wales, remember that Clint Eastwood was once mayor of Carmel, Calif.

No, the only white males from traditional Southern states on the RNC’s prime-time stage were former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Attorney General Sam Olens, former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich, and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.

That’s actually less than meets the eye. Olens, Gingrich and McDonnell were required to share their podiums with women.

(This was particularly important for McDonnell, who this year introduced legislation to require some women seeking an abortion to obtain a transvaginal ultrasound. A less stringent version ultimately passed.)

“That’s bizarre,” conceded delegate and state Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black, addressing the lack of people who look like him who were put before TV cameras. He quickly elaborated that it bespeaks a successful future for the GOP – despite the fact that, according to one study, only 2 percent of the 2,286 delegates to the convention were African-American.

“The strongest message out of this whole deal is the strength of our farm team. No pun intended,” he said. Black pointed to U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, former Alabama Democratic congressman Arturo Davis, and Mia Love, an African-American candidate for Congress from Utah.

“I celebrate it as a great way to depict the strength of the party. I don’t celebrate it as a smart move,” Black said.

And yet it was that, too.

“[Romney strategists] are more concerned about their swing states now, and they should be. I don’t feel snubbed,” said state Labor Commissioner Mark Butler, a convention guest.

Might there be other reasons for avoiding Southern men? Probably.

“It’s who endorsed who. And most of the folks in the South went with Newt,” said state Sen. Barry Loudermilk of Cassville. Olens, he pointed out, was the most prominent statewide elected official in Georgia to step out front for Romney.

But Loudermilk also agreed that the presidential contest is essentially over in the South.

In an interview this week, GOP strategist Ralph Reed said much the same thing – though on a slightly different topic. The Tampa convention became the place where Romney finally felt comfortable enough to discuss his Mormon faith.

Reed maintains that anti-Mormon bigotry is a bigger problem among liberals. The founder of the Faith and Freedom Coalition admits that it exists among conservatives, too, but says that this no longer matters.

“If you’ve got a grandma sitting in the third row of an independent Baptist, white sideboard church who can’t bring herself to vote for a Mormon because she believes it’s a heresy, she’s more than likely in north Georgia, upstate South Carolina or eastern Tennessee,” Reed said. “And we don’t need her.”
Similarly, Republican support from Southern men is presumed. The race has moved elsewhere.
Democrats are no different. They need to reach across from the other side of the chasm in order to re-elect President Barack Obama.

Consider some of the speakers scheduled to appear this week: former President Bill Clinton, Georgetown law school graduate Sandra Fluke, Carolyn Kennedy, former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, and Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts candidate for U.S. Senate. An abundance of white faces will speak for a party whose base is largely African-American.

U.S. Rep. John Lewis will address the convention, but Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, who has become a semi-regular surrogate for Obama on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” currently has no televised speaking role in Charlotte.

The 2012 presidential contest isn’t about who is already in your corner. It’s about who isn’t.

Personally, I can hardly wait until the final night of the Democratic National Convention when He steps forth from the background, bathed in iridescent lighting, with a pink/purple hue; slowly walking to the podium…checking His Tele-Palm-Ter and taking a sip straight from the waters of the Sea of Galilee. The crowd is hushed; you can hear a pin drop. He delivers his usual eloquent (but hollow) oratory. Every other word…the crowd roars! The crescendo is deafening! He drivels, uh, talks on, and on, and on about His accomplishments (no failures, just accomplishments).
It’s difficult..no, almost impossible to hear Him over the roar of the collected. After 45 minutes or more He finally wraps it up. The crowd is weeping with joy! He has Aris..NO, He has done it! He has – in one singular speech – outdone the likes of every, that’s right EVERY speaker who spoke at the Republican Convention in Tampa. All of the lapdog media outlets can’t wait to get on air and proclaim that this sermon (well…) was the “greatest ever given! To which the Republicans countered (meekly) that it may have been eclipsed only by another fellow that lived between 1 and 33AD. You be the judge.

Bob, it’s “hear” not “here.” You’re on target re scumbag Reed, who manipulates Christians in order to line his pockets every election year. He’s bound to have a special spot in hell for the hereafter.

But on another note, I missed the thread about Clint Eastwood’s monologue at Tampa – he was LOL witty, very intelligent take on the current situation, and flat out brilliant. The people who are denigrating him are showing what shallow thinkers they are.

Dirty Harry brought a fresh touch to what’s usually much too predictable convention formats, and I’ll bet Joe Six-Pack (and Jolene) voters loved it! He got the delegates laughing and in a great mood, set the stage for Romney to deliver a stem-winder acceptance speech. Memorable is always the goal, and memorable is what they got.

White males are never invisible and cry as they may always and pretending to be a VICTIM. when it is ALL of the rest of Us including white women, who are the REAL VICTIMS of all of your Brothers DASTARDLY and DIABOLICAL plans. Which has of late have been ALL going to yours and their favor, through vicious and hateful passed enacted Legislation since 2010 on ALL excluding the White MALE.

Mayor Reed has no Right nor does anyone care about his NON invitation to speak after the stunt he pulled earlier in that arrangement on T-splost and siding with Gov.Deal. Its a decision that is rightly made, in light of his BOOT LICKING on the T-SPLOST and then to be quiet as a CHURCH MOUSE as Gov. Deal, throws Mayor Reed and the entire State of Georgia and its citizens under the BUS on the OUTRAGEOUS DENIAL of the Medicaid Expansion set and approved under the HealthCARE Afforable Act this week.

Mayor Reed will spend more than any other elected Mayor in Atlanta’s history in an SAD attempt to be re-elected for a SECOND TERM. This will all occur under the watchful eyes of a very apprehensive and wary citizenry.
Stick a FORK in HIM he is DONE!

If President Obama is smart, He too will put a lot of distance in between Mayor Reed as well. The Man is DAMAGED GOODS politically! He can go Back to his Big Business and financially connected friends and the Cronies down at the DOME from now on. He would better serve Atlanta by going ahead and resigning EARLY!

The sentiment among the citizens of this GREAT CITY is just that BAD! A severe loss of CONFIDENCE to LEAD.

back to that all elusive and Invisible WHITE MALE. The issues, concerns and worries that are facing the American White Male is ONE of of his OWN making. By stomping on ALL of the entire population of America because of his much sensitive and bruised EGO by America electing a Black President. Through that Invisible White Male anger, we all have been the VICTIMS of his imperial wrath since he election of President OBAMA.

The restricting of Women”s Healthcare rights and the choices that must make about their OWN BODIES, that have already been fought and WON years ago. The Women of America now find themselves now even dealing with the definition of the CRIMINAL ACT…RAPE!

is it Forcible RAPE? or just plain ole RAPE? Then to have THE WRITER of such a turn in definition on the Presidential TICKET as the Vice Presidentical Candidate.
A Heartbeat from being President!

We must also remember the mean and nasty Talk and threatened, as well as archaic enacted laws, specifically aimed and the Hispanic and Latino population of America as well as the Immigrant relatives and family members.

Do you also need a reminder of the hateful talk and decisions on the LBGT community that has been waged now for years?

We also can not forget or FORGIVE ALL of the SLIMING of President OBAMA as well! TRULY disgusting and OFFENSIVE from Day ONE of his Administration. Not only is it DISRESPECTFUL to the President, but to the Office of THE President of The UNITED STATES as well. HOW DARE YOU! Even just this week with that OLD FART CLINT EASTWOOD! using foul language in reference to OUR COMMANDER in CHIEF in front of the ENTIRE NATION….without even a word of REGRET or Apology for such offensive and LOW RENT behavior?

Like most Americans, maybe the southern white male was busy trying to find a job or provide for his family, most people don’t need a convention to convince them who to vote for. We have been hearing the same dribble from both sides for so long rehashing it at a 4-day convention won’t change much, besides when it’s being broadcast at 10 p.m. and then is the lead in to 11 o’clock news and once again in the morning, who really needs to lose sleep. Conventions are just a place for the political engine to give themselves a pat on the back and a kiss to the ass, being phony rules the night.

A letter to the leftist/socialists who are constantly whining about the Republicans interfering with women’s rights, e.g., abortion, etc. Let me clear this up for you:

Point 1: An overwhelming majority of non-believers (atheists, agnostics, humanists, animists, seculars, etc.) are of the pro-choice faction; they believe it is a woman’s right to have an abortion -that it is a matter of a woman’s “health,” yada, yada, yada and so on ad nauseum.

Point 2: The above, in almost unanimous lock-step are Democrats and vote Democrat – come hell (no pun intended) or high water. They, almost unanimously, will not or will never vote for a Republican.

Point 3: A great majority of conservatives, i.e., Republicans are church-going believers in God and hold true as they can to the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Bible;

The Republican Party is no more anti-woman than Hitler was a Sunday School Teacher. The media and Deborah Wasserman-Schultz, et al., have foisted that lie on the media which is all too happy to grab and run with it.

Liberals, Socialists have a person trying to get re-elected who has failed to get the American economy moving and has not created enough jobs to make a difference. He and the Democratic Party cannot let anyone go near his horrible record ergo the constant shift away from that and the national debt. As long as the Democrats deflect criticism and/or questions about the failed bin Obama presidency, they will have a fighting chance to win the re-election.

Libs, you really need to get away from the tired discussions of women’s rights, war on women, bin Obama’s accomplishments, etc. Get away from yesterdays tired non-argument about bin Obama “getting” bin Laden. I guess the Navy Seals were there to shoot a documentary.

Another blogger posted 80+ things that bin Obama promised he would do when he was elected and has failed to do. The count is growing. Fortunately for our Republic, not all voters are as ignorant of the actual facts as you on this blog are and they will vote accordingly…Romney.

Has anybody here seen the new documentary about Obama’s life “2016″ in local theaters? A blurb in the AJC this morning said it is #7 at the box office nationwide – the highest any documentary has ever ranked. Sounds like a lot of Americans are trying to find out more about the President, don’t really know his life story. I’d be curious to know what your thoughts are, if you’ve seen it.

By the way, I keep noticing how Bernie refers to the WOMEN OF AMERICA. I myself know many women, and I have come to the conclusion that you don’t know women, or you have a mis-interpreted view of your own gender. The women I know are focused on issues such as the economy and foreign policy. Of course they pay attention to their own reproductive rights, but that is not the only issue at which they pay attention. Women are now slowly, but unmistakeably, starting to favor the Republican Party. They know that the far-right Tea Party is only a small faction of the Republican Party, and most understand that America has not improved economically and in terms of foreign policy in the past four years. In fact, I am starting to believe that the Democratic Party is only using this abortion fiasco as a desperate ploy to reach women; does anyone notice how a few far-left posters have milked this excessively? Anyhow, with regards to swing states and fundraising, I have come to the conclusion that Romney/Ryan will win the election by a slim ,margin, thanks to the increase of support by women.

He cannot run on his record and he owns the economy, no matter how he wants to assign blame elsewhere. These diversions are an attempt to place Romney on the defensive and take him ‘off message’. Romney is staying ‘on message’ and the dims can’t stand the heat. You read right on this blog the Kenyan’s sycophants parroting the dims party line, just like the good little mush-minded socialists that they are.

Some earlier asked about the Dinesh D’Souza movie. I caught it at Phipps; give it a rating of five electric shocks; and will recommend it to anyone regardless of their political persuasion or grip on sanity. Its a hoot — kind of like Harold and Kumar Go Down the Rabbit Hole, but without Harold. Its clearly among D’Souza’s best performances. Probably better than when he appeared on the Colbert Report in one of those segments where they do the mock interview of the deranged. Maybe even better than when he tried to debate Christopher Hitchins on faith. If you don’t know anything about D’Souza, he’s the former consort of Ann Coulter and runs a fundamentalist “college” that moves around in office space in NYC. He likes to be referred to as a scholar and political or religious theorist, but holds only a BA in English; although I think that he’s been associated with some of the Koch fronts in the past.

I don’t want to ruin the movie for you by going into detail, but the main theme is D’Souza’s sojourn around the world to prove that the President’s policies are influenced by Obama’s father’s anti-colonialism, and that this will result in the end of the American Empire. He even accuses the President of dreaming of a world without nuclear weapons, if you can immagine such a thing. And, if you thought of the founding fathers as the original anti-colonialists … . But, don’t go to the movie as fact-checker or you’ll miss some of the best humor, as his interviewing comes-off much like those Colbert segments that I mentioned.

Contrary to much of the mis-information escaping the fringe right bubble, there were no lines to see this movie. At times my lady friend and I comprised from 25 -50% of the audience. There was a young couple for awhile, but they didn’t seem that interested in the movie. And, its got a long way to go to overtake Moore’s and Gore’s documentaries at the box office.

I’m working on a new mathematical algorithm (MA) that will be applied to human neurosystems. Quite practical as you will see. I have given it away free (as you will note below). The algorithm will be administered through a series of inter-connected electrodes beginning at mouth, transposed through the brain, back again and ending again at the mouth. Don’t get ahead of me now. Yes, you guessed it: The mouth, once activated and spewing insipid remarks, will have the remarks filtered through a screening process (anticipated mathematical variances) and will cause smoke to be blown from the aural cavities. The darker the smoke, the more insidious the remark; the lighter the smoke, the more believable. Of course, those in close proximity of the speaker are warned beforehand that they should immediately put on and wear appropriate masks in order to prevent inhaling damaging and polluted air in and around the speaker(s).

I should have the Beta version ready and will test it in real time at the Democratic Convention. There will be 60, giant, 100” fans exhausting the putrid, toxic air during the proceedings. The MA will be stationed prominently below each Tele-Promp-ter so as to catch the maximum spewing.

My guess is that the black smoke will become known as the political equivalent of “Global Warming”.

Following the convention – and after the unit is thoroughly cleaned and all putrid goo that was collected and removed using the bloviating, I will donate it to the Smithsonian Institution.

Here’s the deal, you call me a ‘Socialist’ (as if that is some sort of crippling slur) and I don’t care. As a lifelong committed socialist small business person, I am honored.

At the same time I can refer to your guys as demented, backward looking, fearful, wrong-wing, racist, religiously misguided fascists, and you probably take comfort in the accusation.

I know far more people that approve of the first definition and find the second one horrific.

There’s your TRUTH, it ain’t in you guys.

going wrong,

The economic truth is the economic truth.
During 2001-2008, my employee base shrunk by 45% due to customers becoming unemployed and unable to afford our products and services.
Since 2009, that trend has reversed (not as fast or as much as I would have liked) but stable footing has returned.
This is a national trend and no matter how hard the wrong-wing nuts in the House tried, they couldn’t prevent it from occurring.

So now you go full on crazy with expanded birther nonsense, step from ’socialist’ (he’s not although I really wish he was) to Marxist and even Communist (so far from any hint of reality to be both hilarious and terrifyingly insane).

Get a grip. You might have to find new friends that aren’t bald-running nuts, but you would see an entirely different world than the one you tried so hard to invent.

(Dis)honest (@11,08a);
“ As usual, when confronted with the truth all you guys can do is deflect and project.”

Assuming you are answering my post of 11.23a, let me state:
In your apparent limited experience with the American educational system I doubt that you have the intellectual capacity to grasp what I attempted to say in that posting. Whose version of the “TRUTH” is right? As I said, I suspect (and have so for a long time) that it’s YOUR version that counts.
I, too, was a small business person and sold my business in 2006 (luckily it turns out). I built that business from gound zero to 39 employees and seven locations an – as you may appreciate – spent literally thousands of hours in the 19 years I had the business worrying about absenteeism, feelings, turnover, payroll and other issues that I doubt your Anointed One will ever experience (but he’s not the only one). The money I received for that business put me in the 1% class as you socialists despise so much. I guess to appease my mind and develop a “feel good” attitude, I should let the government steal as much as they wish to provide more food stamps and other give-aways. Nooo…I don’t think so.
I am the absolute antithesis of a socialist and, in fact, view that class as Communist Lite, but, I suppose, that won’t offend you.
What you call me (or us as you fashion in your post) doesn’t faze me in the least for, as Shakespeare so eloquently put it in one of many a soliloquy from Hamlet: Tibi ipsi dic vere. Yes…”To thine own self be true.” I know who I am and as you, am comfortable with that.
What do you mean when you state, “I know far more people that approve of the first definition and find the second one

“An abundance of white faces will speak for a party whose base is largely African-American.”

Jim –

African-Americans make up less than 13% of the population. To suggest that they are the Base of the Democratic Party makes it sound as though they are the majority, which clearly isn’t so – they’re not 25% of the Democrats in the House. You may have this impression in GA, in which black reps make up most of the House Democrats, but clearly, the Democrats base is much larger than the people of color.

Aside from breaking your arm patting yourself on the back what was the point?

I just hope in the Second Term when taxation returns to Clinton Era levels with no preferential treatment to the type of income and realistic reductions in the amount of money we pour down the military hole we will see acceleration in return to middle class prosperity.

Isn’t that what you would like to see as well?

“I just hope in the Second Term”

There will be no second term for the Kenyan.

“no preferential treatment to the type of income”

One would assume that you want to tax everyone equally, even the nearly 50% who pay little or no income taxes at present. That would be the “fair” thing to do, wouldn’t it?

“realistic reductions in the amount of money we pour down the military hole”

I’d trust a hungry dog in the smokehouse before I’d trust your judgment on this issue. Providing for the defense of America is one of the very few legitimate constitutional responsibilities of the federal government. Unlike many who post here, I live in the real world, understand the threat to freedom our enemies pose and know they must be dealt with from a position of superior strength.

Eastwood’s monologue was that of a guy who produces and directs Academy Award winning movies, plus has served as Mayor of Carmel, California – entertainer and politician, which is what we saw at Tampa. It’s pretty funny that people who consider themselves intellectuals could not get the nuance. Empty chair: symbol for person who most often voted “present” whenever he showed to vote at all, was absent most of the time during his brief legislative time; plus being missing in action during these last 3 1/2 years as president when he promised to turn our economy around in 2008, said if he didn’t we should not re-elect him. (I loved when Eastwood said, instead of setting a date somewhere out in the future re our troops in Afghanistan, “Why don’t you bring them home tomorrow?” Remember Obama promised to bring them home from Iraq and Afghanistan when he was elected…. didn’t happen.)

Speaking of 2008, Obama said then “It’s time for them to own their failures.” Well, with any honesty, it’s time for him to own his failures. Our nation is presently taxing at 14% and spending at 22% — he has brought us to a worse place than 4 yrs ago, and this borrow-and-spend is unsustainable.

I’m disgusted with both political parties, just want to vote for the best person of the two from which we can choose, regardless of party. That is looking more and more like the distinguished Romney, who proved as Governor of Massachusetts that he can deliver on job creation, paying off their $18 bil debt and putting the state in the black, put in place workable universal health care that is still running well, etc.
