Clint Eastwood at the RNC: Brilliant, or just plain weird?

TAMPA – As the 82-year-old actor and director Clint Eastwood walked onto the stage, with the image of the Confederate veteran Josey Wales in the background, the stage at the Republican National Convention was set for a tour de force.

For 11 minutes, with only Marco Rubio and Mitt Romney between Dirty Harry and the end of the evening, Eastwood debated an invisible President Barack Obama:

But here’s the thing: Eastwood, while he clearly endorsed Romney, was channeling Ron Paul when it came to foreign policy. From Eastwood to the invisible Obama:

”You were against the war in Iraq, and that’s okay. But you thought the war in Afghanistan was okay. You thought that was something worth doing. We didn’t check with the Russians to see how they did there, for the 10 years. But we did it….

“You mentioned something about a target date for bringing everybody home. And you give that target date, and I think Mr. Romney asked the only sensible question: Why are you giving the date out now? Why don’t you just bring them home tomorrow morning?”

Then again, in his acceptance speech on Thursday, Romney didn’t utter the word “Afghanistan.” Not exactly an endorsement of John McCain’s criticism of Obama on Wednesday evening.

By the way, delegates tell me that this was all extemporaneous. There was no teleprompter or text screen rolling in the hall.

The fact that he’s 82 years old has nothing to do with the fact that anyone talking to an empty chair on stage should be taken with a grain of salt. His speech was lacking in factual evidence and full of sideways insults and jackassery. Quite frankly I respect and admire Mr. Eastwood’s spunk and humor for a man of his age. What I don’t respect are his cheap shots, mimickery, and lack of respect. Republicans often criticize Obama for the events that have unfolded, specifically those related to the economical decline and national debt. But it has been the actions of the republican party that have made it difficult for our president to do his job. And there has been nothing that has shown me that Mit would do any better for our country, the evidence in my mind has been quite contrary.

Scary that so many people connected with his rant and poor acting. Perhaps he has acted for so long, he has forgotten how to behave in an actual situation.

Brilliant, a message to the undecided was his strategy. He had a couple of serious moments in the entertaining speech where he tells the Americans that the politicians are their employees, the people own this country, not government. The people in this country are the best and deserve a top notch man to run the country. If he is not doing the job, let him go. You don’t need to rehire a person just because you feel he is a good guy and you voted for him and stood by him for 4 years. Clint was the best because he out smarted all the liberal media. The people he was targeting got the message and that will make a difference, you will all see.

It’s weird how Republicans dismiss Hollywood types 24/7/365 but whenever they find one that’s willing to speak on their behalf, that person is a god. Chuck Norris, Jon Voight, etc. were paraded around every chance Republicans got. When Eastwood made that Super Bowl commercial, Republicans thought it was “Dem propaganda garbage from a liberal Hollywood elite scumbag” and pooped all over him. Of course they jump at the chance to have him speak at their convention months later. Now he’s a hero in their eyes and they act like they never said what they did about him for the commercial. It’s hilarious.

Also, Eastwood (and seemingly most Republicans) have forgotten that the war in Afghanistan began in 2001 under George W. Bush. When Democrats talked about getting out of that war, Republicans scoffed and said that “we must stay the course” and that Democrats wanted to “cut and run”. Now Republicans act like it was Obama’s decision to go to war and that they have no idea why we’re over there. LMAO

Who in their right mind and self assured in their organization would put a senile old man in front of their convention to totally embarrass himself and the entire political party. Whoever put this village idiot on the stage made a loud statement. The GOP has no idea what it really wants. For now they are grasping at straws, and last night they got a used straw.

It was very interesting that after that slapstick attempt at humiliating and embarrassing the President, Mitt Romney blamed Obama for dividing Americans.

The RNC had done a pretty good job over the last 3 days of pretending they have not spent the last 4 years assaulting and insulting the President, attacking him over where he was born, if he even attended the colleges he graduated from, and basically opposing anything he has attempted to pass even if it was a bipartisan outreach effort on his part.

It was at least a bit refreshing to see some truth on that stage for a short period of time, some red meat for the real GOP base.

Considering the state of the government school system and the overall lack of creativity in this country I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that the majority of people in this country totally missed the point of Mr. Eastwood’s “act” last night. He was talking to an empty chair that represented the POTUS. We have had an empty chair in the White House and no leadership for the last 4 years as the POTUS has been an absentee leader on the critical issues that face this nation. Let’s not forget we Georgians are giving Clint 35% of the expenses his company gins up for shooting Trouble With the Curve here in Georgia. He sure built that, or is it BILKED that. Subsidizing Hollywood is now an essential service of government, as passed by the GOP-TP.

We do have a DNR WRD that’s 40% under staffed, an EPD that’s a joke, teacher furloughs (who came up with ‘government schools’ as an insult–GOP?) are routine, and libraries are closing, but we can subsidize movies for the benefit of a very few.

No legitimate study says these tax kickbacks make real jobs and offer a net gain. Another bad Deal (R-TP). Clint ripped poor Detroit for 42%–good acting that he could keep a straight face while shooting Gran Torino.

Yes, the libs know the defeat is coming! Three and a half years of blaming others, apologizing to the world, engaging in class warfare, refusing to accept responsibility for ANYTHING, very high unemployment and attempting to spend America into oblivion is coming to an end!

The future for an energy-independent America with good jobs available to those able to work is coming! The era of punishing success and abusing small business operators is nearing its end. People with small businesses will now have the confidence and ability to expand knowing that no ‘surprises’ will be forthcoming from President Romney. Others with venture capital will start small businesses. SUCCESS WILL NO LONGER BE PUNISHED, IT WILL BE REWARDED!

America elected Obama . . . and is the poorer for having done so to the tune of $6 trillion added to the national debt with annual deficits exceeding $1 trillion.

Most of the people critical of Eastwood are simply mad and astonished someone had the guts to call Obama on some of his mistakes and shortcomings. The paid left wing “comics,” such as they are, will not and have not commented on Obama. If Johnny Carson were alive, he’d take him on.
But Eastwood was funny and had some good digs–especially the part about Biden, who some think is mentally ill, is nothing but a “grin with a body behind it.” I guarantee you, though, if you thought this speech was hateful and pathetic, then you ain’t seen nothing yet. Wait until the Democratic National Convention for the real venom.

Clint Eastwood was their to entertain. People take this stuff WAY too seriously. There were SO many other serious moments that this was a nice breather. Having said that his akward, yet effective, speech did make some good points. One of my favorite parts was when he mentioned you shouldn’t vote for someone because you like him…It shouldn’t matter if a politician is Republican, Democrat, LIbertarian….all they want is your vote. You should pick someone based on the job they can do. If that person hasn’t done a good job then they need to go. ITS THAT SIMPLE folks. If the person running the country, look at it as a company, is failing to turn it around then they need to go. Regardless of party affiliation or anything else idealogues want to throw at you.

The core of the cons? LOL that’s pretty hilarious! How are conservatives Old, misled, and angry? Most of the anger I read on these blogs comes from the left and somehow it always seems to turn into a race issue that they bring up. So if that is your definition of the core of cons…then is this the core of the dems? “Young, They Know everything, and Hopefully Optimistic”

Hahaha…I guess we know which kool-aid you drink. Give me a break. The POTUS has been TERRIBLE and needs to go. He has not fixed the troubles that plague our country. I’m not sayng Mitt will be any kind of “Savior”, but I do believe he will do a better job than what we have had for the past 4 years. The left is so funny……they want to scare women voters with social issues that will never change. They freak women out with all the extreme right winged abortion right talk as if all of a sudden a newly elected Republican will take away womens rights on that issue. Give me a break. It’s too divided across the country for that to EVER happen. Then there is the gay rights issue…..who really cares if Gays aren’t allowed to use the term Marriage? Its a word that means something to religious folks and they have a right to defend that. At the end of the day all that matters is that Gay couples have the same rights as the “married” ones. You take those 2 major SOCIAL issues out of the mix and what do you have left? The ECONOMY and DEFENSE. The current POTUS has done a terrible job with the economy so it’s time for a change. Historically the left is weaker on defense so that is a non issue as well.

The national conventions these days are pep rallies to get people fired up for the big game. Rarely are the nominees or big issues fought over and determined at the conventions, as they were in previous generations.

Nonetheless, I’m amazed at how many people are committed to watching as many speeches as they can from both conventions. I think this is a reflection on how seriously people take our current national problems. They keep hoping that somewhere in all the name-calling, finger-pointing, and hyperbole, that realistic assessments and solutions will be discussed.

As a regular visitor to forums like this, I confess that I do indeed allow reactions and emotions to drive my comments from time to time. I will in no way pretend that I’m “above” it. But the people of this country are worried. We want to believe that somebody is rooted far enough in reality to effect some meaningful remedies to what ails us.

Nastiness and hyperbole are not meaningful remedies, nor is the constant vilifying of those who don’t agree with our decided position on every issue. As we go forward toward election day, I hope to see my fellow Americans laying down the weapons of hate they point at each other, and start talking to each other in a reasonable tone of voice. If you have a perspective to share with someone who does not yet see your point, then share the perspective. If your points are valid, they’ll stand on their own merits without the superfluous insults. Right?

Well, it’s an idea anyway. I can hope if I want to.

Ok, I’m a huge Eastwood fan. I like him as an actor and director, and quite frankly, I agree with him on most things politically. He is a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. Perfect combo, in my humble opinion. With that out on the table, his speech last night was nothing short of a disaster. It wasn’t flattering of him, Mitt Romney or President Obama. It was purely awful. I am sure the Romney campaign wished they had to do this part of last night all over again with a different guest. The no-so-secret secret guest speaker was built up all week and ended with a resounding thud. As a fiscal conservative/social liberal, I’ll be sticking with Team Obama. After all, it was the policies of the republicans in charge throughout most of the 2000s that took us from a surplus to a huge deficit by passing huge tax cuts without offsetting spending cuts, sending into two long drawn-out UNFUNDED wars, an UNFUNDED prescription plan and TARP. And who wants the religious wing nuts of the republican party to have a direct line into the next administration. I want my wife and daughters to have the say-so about their own health and not be told by the government they can’t do this or that because in their eyes, it is morally wrong. I also want my gay nephew and my many dear gay friends to be able to enjoy equal marriage rights just like my wife and I have. If only the Republicans could adopt the motto, live and let live, I think they would appeal to many more voters across this great land of ours. As long as they muddle around in everyone’s lives and haphazardly adopt bad economic policy by cutting taxes and entering wars with abandon without any corresponding spending cuts to balance the budget, I will not vote for them again.

As for the plan that Romney and Ryan have, it was stated pretty clearly by Mitt Romney’ in his speech, but in case you missed it, see below. Clear enough for you?

“…I have a plan to create 12 million new jobs. It has 5 steps.

First, by 2020, North America will be energy independent by taking full advantage of our oil and coal and gas and nuclear and renewables.

Second, we will give our fellow citizens the skills they need for the jobs of today and the careers of tomorrow. When it comes to the school your child will attend, every parent should have a choice, and every child should have a chance.

Third, we will make trade work for America by forging new trade agreements. And when nations cheat in trade, there will be unmistakable consequences.

Fourth, to assure every entrepreneur and every job creator that their investments in America will not vanish as have those in Greece, we will cut the deficit and put America on track to a balanced budget.

And fifth, we will champion SMALL businesses, America’s engine of job growth. That means reducing taxes on business, not raising them. It means simplifying and modernizing the regulations that hurt small business the most. And it means that we must rein in the skyrocketing cost of healthcare by repealing and replacing Obamacare.”

Fun Size,

I appreciate your commitment to small businesses. I totally agree! Entrepreneurs, armed with a dream, the spirit of individualism and innovation, and a willingness to work hard, are what made this country great!

The problem today is that BIG business is killing small business, via their purchase of our legislators. Who do you think writes the laws that govern business and taxes? The legislators? Heck, they don’t even read what they vote on, let alone write it! The big-money, big-industry lobbyists and billionaire conglomerate owners “suggest” legislation that benefits them personally. They donate generously, wine, dine & “weekend” our Congressmen and Governors to get what they want. And what they want is NOT what’s good for the small businessman trying to break into the market.

Look at what WalMart has done to small businesses in small towns all over this country. Now the people in the towns have the privilege of working hourly, benefit-free, minimum-wage jobs with no future, and many of them require food stamps that our tax dollars supplement just to feed their families. The Walton family is worth about a hundred billion. Their employees in Georgia are the single biggest group of Peach Care recipients, and you and I have NO chance of starting up a competing hardware, furniture, or housewares store in any small town they occupy.

Yes, government is killing small business, via the funding they receive from BIG business to do so.

@ BigBoomNY – maybe you should see what Obama did when he was running in ‘08….his entire speech criticized the previous administration. That’s what politicians do when they are running for office and don’t agree with the policies of the POTUS. However, I don’t feel he bashed Obama the entire time. He plainly and quite effectively pointed out all the problems Obama has made even worse and all the “solutions” that were never fulfilled by his promises. Sounds to me like maybe you should take a step back from the party line and really take a look at each side carefully. Otherwise you will vote with emotion as usual and not give anyone that can possibly bring about better CHANGE as your commander and chief coinly phrased the last go around.

I agree, Rices speech was very good as well as Romney’s. Mrs. Rice is a very classy lady and I highly respect her. She has not ducked away on any critizism. Handles herself very well.
I think Rubio will make a run at the Presidency. Of course i don’t know that for sure, it’s more of a gut feeling. Unlike Mr. Obama, he knows that several years in the Senate will groom him and help prepare him for the oval office.
The Presidency is not for someone that needs on the job training.

I watched the convention with two Republican friends last night. When Eastwood came on they looked at each other with smug looks ont heir faces and then at me and I oculd tell they were trying not to laugh. About 4 minutes into his “act” they were looking at each other with looks of horror on their faces and dslowly shaking their heads. When it was over she (the really kind one) said, “Does he have dementia? All we need now is for Palin to come on!”

In Ryan’s speech the other night, several times, my friend looked at his wife and said “Even I know that’s not true!’ and he NEVER says anything bad about a Republiccan!

Later he said “I guess I need a bumper sticker that reads “I’m a moderate Republican. That’s why I vote Democratic.”

I am an independent voter, so not necessarily a Republican fan. His speech was thoughtful and slow-paced and was at a very high intellectual level. It was not like the typical speeches prepared by speechwriters. It is the viewers who had trouble “following” his satirical dialogue (which was a little challenging to follow at times, as you had to listen very intently), that are the ones who think it was incoherent or rambling. To understand some of the humor, you had to be able to “read between the lines” to imagine what Obama might be saying. Most viewers, however, are used to television jokes that spell out every thing at an elementary level (dumbed down television). Because they had trouble understanding the witty, satire, it appeared incoherent to them. For those of us who could keep up, it was brilliant, allbeit in an eccentric manner. Try watching it a 2nd time and you may follow more of it,

As far as the legislators being “bought”, I don’t even want to start on that…but it happens no matter what party is is power. It comes down to the ethics of the individual legislators which is a whole other topic that would be a blog in itself, especially in the state of GA.

Yet no knew ideas of their own or really dissecting the failed policies of the president. Instead it will be all about how the repubs blocked him in congress (what about the first 2 years of his presidency media folks?) and how he has made progress from such a massive hole we were in. Standard Affair. Then there will be more talk about how he is going into the debates with an obvious lead and how it will be dificult for Mitt to catch him. I have not seen one republican in Congress today, including Boehner, Ryan, McConnell and the rest of the lot, take any responsibility for their failed policies that has contributed mightily to the debt crisis we face today. Policies like two unfunded wars, tax cuts without corresponding spending cuts, an unfunded prescription drug program and TARP. These people are part of the problem, yet republicans think their poop don’t stink. It is totally hypocritical and representative of the denial, or lack of responsibility, these people have. Explain how I am wrong if you can!

After watching last night I came out with so many things. Generally speaking I like Clint’s movies. He has one coming up in a few weeks which I’m sure every Repub will probably drag their entire family to see in a show of support for coming to the convention. I was on the fence about it just because of the main theme around baseball. Now he’s given me another reason to ponder.

He was funny at times. I really did LOL now and then. But for the majority of the speech he was rambling and mumbling. I think he would have played out the FU part of his little skit for another 10 mins. if he could have figured out how to keep the censors happy. That seemed to be the time when he got the most reactions. Unfortunately he really bombed on facts. And staying that we don’t need a lawyer in the WH, well did he forget that his nominee went to law school?
