Romney, GOP’s right wing resolve dispute over 2016 contest

TAMPA — That rebellion that threatened to spoil Mitt Romney’s day at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday? Consider it over.

Originally, a rule change adopted by the rules convention last Friday would have allowed the Republican winner of the 2016 presidential contest veto power over the list of delegates to the nominating convention.

Ron Paul supporters were able to enlist the support of FreedomWorks, the Family Research Council and other conservative groups to call foul, taking advantage of Monday’s Isaac-forced empty calendar to organize serious opposition and threaten a floor fight on what’s now the opening day of the RNC.

Here’s the email that’s flying around Tampa, designed to solve the problem:

To the Members of the Republican National Committee and the Convention Committee on Rules:

The undersigned are very pleased to announce that the leadership of the Republican National Committee and the Romney for President campaign has heard the concerns of the conservative grassroots voices in our party and has crafted an amendment to the Rules adopted on Friday to address these concerns.

At the same time, the revised language closes a loophole in our party rules, which previously failed to include a penalty for delegates who break their promise to vote for a particular Presidential candidate as required by state law or state party rules.

We are pleased that our party has come together to fashion this compromise. This will allow Republicans of all stripes to come to the Convention united and focused on defeating Barack Obama in November.

The Convention is our party’s opportunity to energize our supporters and activists. It would be unfortunate to squander the opportunity fighting an internal battle which we have now been able to successfully resolve and which will accomplish the goals of all parties involved.

The resolution that we have reached is straightforward. It simply prevents a bound delegate from nominating or casting a vote for a different presidential candidate than the one to whom the delegate was legally bound by state law or state party rule.

Instead, under this new provision, a delegate who attempts to violate his binding pledge is deemed to have resigned and the Secretary of the Convention will record the improper vote as it should have been cast based on state law or party rule.

It leaves the actual selection of delegates completely to state parties under state law and state party rules.

We are pleased that we were able to reach an acceptable resolution and urge the members of the Convention Rules Committee to adopt the revised Rule tomorrow to be included in their report to the Convention.

Text of the Rule:

Rule 16(a)(2).

For any manner of binding or allocating delegates under these Rules, if a delegate

(i) casts a vote for a presidential candidate at the National Convention inconsistent with the delegate’s obligation under state law or state party rule,

(ii) nominates or demonstrates support under Rule 40 for a presidential candidate other than the one to whom the delegate is bound or allocated under state law or state party rule, or

(iii) fails in some other way to carry out the delegate’s affirmative duty under state law or state party rule to cast a vote at the National Convention for a particular presidential candidate, the delegate shall be deemed to have concurrently resigned as a delegate and the delegate’s improper vote or nomination shall be null and void. Thereafter the Secretary of the Convention shall record the delegate’s vote or nomination in accordance with the delegate’s obligation under state law or state party rule. This subsection does not apply to delegates who are bound to a candidate who has withdrawn his or her candidacy, suspended or terminated his or her campaign, or publicly released his or her delegates.

Signers:

James Bopp Jr.
Vice Chairman Republican National Committee

Cindy Costa NCW SC

Bob Bennett, Chairman Ohio Republican Party

John Ryder NCM Tenn.

Ron Kaufman NCM Mass.

Henry Barbour NCM Miss.

Morning delegation meetings will decide whether the compromise takes.

NEWS FLASH (and it isn’t from “Gawker”:

CC, look at Morris’ track record of predictions….it is awful. He doesn’t do polls, he manipulate information. Most of the reliable polls such as Gallup, show President Obama ahead of the empty suit. But know what? We won’t know for sure until the election is over. The way the state Republican leaders in the swing states are crowing about how they have fixed the system to insure Mitt’s success, I think it’s going to be an interesting election.

Yes, four years ago at this time Morris was spouting that Obama was in big trouble. Four months ago he was touting Romney’s favorability rating as being higher than the President’s. But, best of all, as another hurricane approaches New Orleans, I am reminded of his prediction respecting Bush and Katrina: Responding to disasters is a source of presidential strength and popularity, and Bush is about to show how it is done.”

There is still an issue with the rules:

Hello friends,

Some of you are aware of the issues surrounding Rules changes at the GOP National Convention, and have already taken a stand. Some of you may not yet be aware, so here is a link to Michele Malkin’s column, as she seems to be relatively up-to-date http://michellemalkin.com/2012/08/27/floor-fight-grass-roots-activists-battle-attempt-to-rig-gop-convention-delegate-rules/. There are many groups and individuals speaking out against the changes to the rules, and news stories are becoming more numerous, but we need more voices. Jim Galloway of the AJC updated the situation in his online column last night just before 11pm, indicating a compromise had been worked out. This compromise seems unacceptable, as , via Rule 12, it still allows changes to be made to the rules at an time during the year, meaning, seemingly, any compromise reached now on other rules could be undone after the convention.

Some of you are far more on the “inside” than I am, and may have a better understanding of the situation. Please feel free to comment!

As a grassroots supporter of the GOP, willing to pour time, energy, and available funds into the party to see freedoms restored to the nation, not taken away, these changes to the rules are completely unacceptable to me, and seem in direct opposition to freedom and respect for the individual.

Please join me in opposing these changes to the Rules, and please do so this morning.

Thanks,

Katie

August 28th, 2012

Only one problem with the email. It seems to imply that the goal of every delegate is defeating Obama in November. That certainly isn’t the case. There are a significant number of delegates who actually care about freedom, liberty, slashing the federal government, ending the failed, unconstitutional wars, cutting spending on empire, restoring sound money, and a long list of items. Those same folks know that fundamentally on these critical issues, Romney is the same as Obama, and a win by Romney will not fundamentally change the course of america. The GOP fundamentally has never been the party of freedom or liberty and aside from a handful of courageous folks who have fought the good fight, has never been the party of small government (in deed, not in rhetoric).

They can make nice with each other, but fundamentally the behavior of the Rombama campaign and the GOP this time around will spell the end of the party in the coming years. There is only so much abuse freedom lovers will take from big government corporatists.

cc: We’re being overwhelmed by the Socialists on this blog (and I use that term very gingerly.. I’ve pose questions on line to any and all and NOT ONE has ever been challenged. The last one concerned “the rich.” I asked the socialist left-wing Dumbos just what defines “rich”; Money? Power? Status? Politics? Wall Street workers? Union Bosses? Massachusetts Liberals (but then, they are one and the same, oops!)?

2. So, they cannot define “rich” without omissions of inclusion of the “super rich” (George Soros, par exemple.>

3. Then, the real kickers (for those who constantly decry the “rich, WHITE” guys (aka: Republicans), I asked “You leftists want the “rich” to pay more in taxes as you’ve been screaming for the past year or so. Well: What would constitute “more” in taxes? Percentage? Financial amount?

3a: If a higher percentage, what should that be? Note: this would be in addition to the already 40+% percent of all Federal taxes paid by the top 10% in wealth (Republican & DEMONCRAT);
3b. Who determines what the percent should be? How was this arrived at?

Then, 4: If the “rich” must pay more in taxes, will the Socialist Left agree that those who pay LITTLE OR NO Federal Income Tax be asked to pay the same amount (in percent as the “rich), or at least something?

The bin Obama Government is now paying a tad less than 500 BILLION DOLLARS per year in interest on our debt. If the ANOINTED ONE is re-elected (OH, GOD!), that amount will surely rise as He will want more and more money to pay for His government. The “rich” will be tapped out and He will have to keep borrowing – now @ 40 cents of every dollar spent, by way.

So, you see, the Left – including such luminaries that spew their hate of Republicans on this blog – don’t really give a rat’s a$$ if our Republic goes broke or not, as long as there are freebies from bin Obama and they don’t have to do any thinking of their own. Guaranteed: If bin Obama is re-elected, getting a job won’t be a problem any more; there won’t be an America as we know it to pay for the jobs – I think the operative word is, “bankrupt.”

The real world does not work in vague terms it works in firm definitions with numbers attached. Using your brilliant analysis one could say that I think I need a new car every year so that I feel good about my situation and since I can not afford one then you should be forced to buy me one. I could use your terms and say the people receiving benefits from the government do not ‘need” cell phones, cable TV, internet connections and AC. This would be an acceptable definition as well.

The problem people like you truly believe that everyone should be equal in outcomes. You believe that no one should have more then their neighbor no matter how hard or little one works or gets an education. This is called communism and you do not want everyone to know that you are so sorry that you are a communist.

@liberalefty you say that and two of the biggest hero’s of the movement are Black…Cain and West…race plays no part to most…wont say all because I know that there are some out there that feel that way…but its just as bad to blindly vote for some one becasue “he looks like me” as I have had two Barry supporters tell me. it is my humble Opinion that Barry knows very little about what t means to be black in America…and since you raised it the birther stuff…his mom was a citizen so he is as well…

Using the term ‘racist’ or “playing the race card” isn’t new for the Kenyan and his mindless followers. It was a campaign strategy and a method to suppress criticism from the beginning. Obama’s syncophants have used it excessively during the past four years.

Bill Clinton learned early . . .

Bill Clinton: Obama Campaign ‘Played the Race Card on Me’
Updated 4:25 p.m.
By Anne E. Kornblut

PHILADELPHIA — Bill Clinton, a victim of racial politics?

That’s his new take on the controversy involving his remarks ahead of the South Carolina primary. “I think that they played the race card on me,” Clinton said in an interview on WHYY here yesterday. “And we now know from memos on the campaign and everything that they planned to do it all along.”

Clinton said that his remarks — that the Obama campaign was similar to Jesse Jackson’s in 1988, which was decried as an attempt to marginalize Sen. Barack Obama — were just true statements of fact, which the Obama campaign then tried to turn against him. “This was used out of context and twisted for political purposes by the Obama campaign to try to breed resentment elsewhere,” Clinton said.

Going Right is really on the talking points train. Those of us on the left are in no way jealous of people who have become financially successful. I will say that there are plenty of people in this country from the left and right that are concerned about where the majority of this country’s wealth is concentrated.

I love how td will refer to poll after poll of Romney being ahead, knowing that there are other polls out there that have Obama ahead. Personally, I don’t pay attention to either one. The only poll I’m concerned with is the final one on November 6th.

On Fox News this afternoon, it was said that Mitt has to overcome a perceived notion that he is a veritaible unknown and all that is known about him is mainly negative. Well, DUH! The only news items people on this blog get are the negatives about Romney from BSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC – not to mention the New York Slimes, Washington Post, Huffington Post, MoveOn.org(asm) and other upstanding fair and balanced “news” outlets.

Anything less would be downright communist.

I penned the “Envy” and “Jealousy” just for those of you who are pissed off with the world because you’re too d–n lazy to make it on your own without a government telling you what to do, when to do it, how much and if you are able to ask for more.
