Mitt Romney: ‘No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate’

From the Associated Press:

COMMERCE, MI — Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney Friday raised the discredited rumor that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States and thus ineligible to be president.

The presumptive GOP nominee, joined for a rally outside Detroit Friday by running mate Paul Ryan, joked that he had been born in a nearby hospital and that “no one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. ”

The president’s reelection campaign swiftly responded that Romney was directly enlisting himself in the discredited “birther movement” and that “should give pause to any rational voter,” said Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt.

Obama has been dogged throughout his presidency by question about his birthplace. He released a long form copy of his birth certificate last year, showing he was born in Hawaii in 1961.

Romney grew up in Michigan and his father, George Romney was a popular governor of the state.

Last week, Obama got in a quip about Romney’s long-ago practice of transporting the family dog on the roof his car. So now they’re even?

Since when is a joke about Seamus the roof surfing dog (which is true and was originally told by Romney in his book) the same as stirring up birther nonsense when you are going to have birthers speaking at the RNC?

Give me a break. Of course, I’m sure that most of the commenters here are going to eat it up.

You Lie

I’ve been struck by the baldness of Romney’s repetitive lies about Obama — that Obama ended the work requirement under welfare, for example, or that Obama’s Affordable Care Act cuts $716 billion from Medicare benefits.

The mainstream media along with a half-dozen independent fact-checking organizations and sites have called Romney on these whoppers, but to no avail. He keeps making these assertions.

Every campaign is guilty of exaggerations, embellishments, distortions, and half-truths. But this is another thing altogether. I’ve been directly involved in seven presidential campaigns, and I don’t recall a presidential candidate lying with such audacity, over and over again. Why does he do it, and how can he get away with it?

The obvious answer is such lies are effective. Polls show voters are starting to believe them, especially in swing states where they’re being repeated constantly in media spots financed by Romney’s super PAC or ancillary PACs and so-called “social welfare” organizations (political fronts disguised as charities, such as Karl Rove and the Koch brothers have set up).

Romney’s lying machine is extraordinarily well financed. By August, according to Jane Mayer in her recent New Yorker article, at least 33 billionaires had each donated a quarter of a million dollars or more to groups aiming to defeat Obama — with most of it flooding into attack ads in swing states.

In early August, “Americans for Prosperity,” one of the nonprofit front groups masquerading as a charity, and founded in part by billionaire right-wingers Charles and David Koch, bought some $27 million in ad time on spots now airing in eleven swing states.

So Romney’s lying machine is working.

But what does all this tell us about the man who is running this lying machine? (Or if Romney’s not running it, what does it tell us about a man who would select the people who are?)

We knew he was a cypher — that he’ll say and do whatever is expedient, change positions like a chameleon, eschew any core principles.

Yet resorting to outright lies — and organizing a presidential campaign around a series of lies — reveals a whole new level of cynicism, a profound disdain for what remains of civility in public life, and a disrespect of the democratic process.

The question is whether someone who is willing to resort to such calculated lies, and build a campaign machine around them, can be worthy of the public’s trust with the most powerful office in the world.

Birthers and Birth Control

The GOP has a sick obsession with women. They just cannot stop their insane focus on birth control, calling women s.l.u.t.s for voicing their opinions on contraceptive insurance coverage, enacting vagin.a.l. ultrasounds, and changing the definition of rape so that no woman could meet the standard. They worship eggs and sperm, and deny the rights of women in the process.

They should change their name to the GYN party.

Hilarious How the Birther Thing Is Romney’s Best Response

Funny how — the minute it becomes clear that their draconian 16th century policies on abortion will cost them elections, suddenly abortion is no longer an issue that is important to the Republicans.

Yet, they have championed oppressive and invasive measures all across the deep south going so far as to give a zygote every right of an actual person. In Texas, they have banned the teaching “critical thinking” in public schools (and it shows).

But still they have the gall to tell us these aren’t the issues America cares about nor that the election will be decided on.

We’ve got news for the GOP. These are the issues the scare the bejeezus out of America.

Right into the voting booth.

President Obama: “No one’s ever asked to see my tax returns.”

“Fox News and other conservative outlets have repeatedly touted false conspiracy theories involving President Obama and his birth certificate. Fox’s opinion programs ran dozens of segments last year in which the hosts either espoused birther conspiracies or did not challenge or correct false claims about Obama’s birth.

Fox News also teamed up with birther Donald Trump — a current Romney surrogate — to repeatedly smear Obama on the subject. Fox’s flagship “straight news” program, Special Report, drew fire for treating birther conspiracies seriously even after President Obama released his long-form birth certificate last year.” – Media Matters

Romney turns whatever direction Fox News leads him.

They both are a sad excuse for original thinking.

I agree! He started off lying at an early age and has carried it to monumental proportions through his presidency! I have NEVER seen such a liar!

“I’ve been struck by the baldness of Romney’s repetitive lies about Obama — that Obama ended the work requirement under welfare, for example, or that Obama’s Affordable Care Act cuts $716 billion from Medicare benefits”

Obama has ‘redefined’ the work requirement under welfare allowing such work as keeping a journal, etc. There are several equally ludicrous jobs now recognized as work. The $716 billion taken from MediCare is a FACT.

Over 8 percent unemployment still after billions of dollars of stimulus money poured out. The “clunker” program-come and gone. Massive outsourcing continues with no incentive for companies to invest in USA. Goods and even food imported from China- a nuclear world power. Why not tax imports? Repeal the Democratic NAFTA? No country on earth is solid economically without a strong manufacturing base. Economics 101. The money has to circulate in this country -not exported to other countries. You cannot blame Bush anymore. By the way, how is the closing of Gitmo working out? Oops-I forgot we cannot ask questions bout that. Anyway, if we have sanctions against Cuba-why does it not include a prison run by USA? Hmmm. I really don’t care about Romney’s tax returns-only mine.

For The Romney Bunch

A college degree is not a requirement to be President. It does make sense to vote a smart person into office, so a college education is not a bad thing. It is not a requirement to show your tax returns either, but a precedent was set by his Dad George Romney.

People DO expect to see how a person running for President handles their money, how honest and fair they are in their dealings. after all this is the person we will entrust with leading the country.

Romney not showing his tax returns in one sense doesn’t matter….but it does lead people to wonder just how honest and fair – minded he really is. That is his dilemma.

Funny how Repubs want to claim that Obama doesn’t want to talk about real issues, but give THEM a chance to talk and they talk about abortion, contraception, “legitimate” rape, and birth certificates.

Classy, real classy, Mr. Romney.

“I’ve been directly involved in seven presidential campaigns”

I’ll bet you have. I’ll bet that I know what political party those presidential candidates represented, too.

What we don’t know is what “directly involved” means. Did you hand out campaign literature, or was the extent of your involvement a financial contribution? It is easy to claim anything on a blog, and I give your claim the weight it deserves – none.

“Ahhh birthers. You’re almost as entertaining as your bible thumping brethren. Beat those drums of hate! Keep going!”

Obama himself created this controversy and has done very little to ebd it. I am NOT satisfied that he meets the Constitutional requirements to hold the office of President. There are far too many unanswered questions that I will not point out here. Your answers would be just as suspect as all the others given on this subject.

You mean gaffes such as Obama speaking of his birthplace, Kenya? Or maybe the gaffe about his “Muslim religion”? There are many more . . . Biden didn’t corner the market on gaffes.

I believe Romney’s education is superior to the Affirmative Action graduate’s education. In fact, even if you give Obama credit for his ‘diplomas’, Romney’s education probably surpasses Obama’s. We’ll never know, will we? Obama had his records ’sealed’!

The only ‘bad choice’ I associate with this is the very bad choice made by the voters in 2008.

Old White Men

The GOP doesn’t care about women, Blacks, and Latinos. If the Civil rights movement hadn’t occurred it would still be illegal for Latinos to become citizens. That was the 1970’s. If it hadn’t been for liberals, men could still rape lesbians straight.

The GOP wants to go back to plantation style economics. A few very rich men controlling all of their subordinates.

That is why they want the rich to become richer and the poor to have less control over their bodies.
