Maria Sheffield endorses Lee Anderson in 12th District race; rival says there was a price tag

We have some blood-letting in the Republican race in the 12th District fight to face down U.S. Rep. John Barrow.

This afternoon, Maria Sheffield, who polled last in Tuesday’s vote but did well in rural portions of the district, endorsed state Rep. Lee Anderson of Grovetown in the Aug. 21 runoff against Augusta businessman Rick Allen.
From the press release, quoting Sheffield:

“The number one industry in GA 12 is agriculture. I have confidence Lee Anderson will represent our family farms in a manner which will get the EPA and its unnecessary and burdensome regulations off their farms and allow our farmers to do what they do best – grow food and feed people.

“I have had the chance to see that Lee Anderson is pro-life, and like me, deeply committed to proclaiming the Christian Faith. I am impressed that Lee Anderson is unapologetic in standing for and pro-actively proclaiming that Christians have both a right and responsibility to be engaged in government and public policy.

The electrons from Sheffield’s email were still warm when this reaction came from Chip Lake, strategist for the Allen campaign:

“While we would have loved to have Maria Sheffield’s endorsement, we had no interest in meeting the $50,000 price tag that she put on it.”

Kathryn Ballou, serving as a spokeswoman for Sheffield, sent the following response:

”Chip was not in the room when Maria had a positive meeting with Rick Allen. Maria had a one-on-one meeting with Lee Anderson and her debt was not mentioned.

“This statement reflects back on Chip Lake, demonstrates his character, and the only person hurt with this statement is Rick Allen. The only person who this statement – by Chip Lake – has helped is John Barrow.

“Republicans are sick and tired of this type of negative politics by overpriced consultants.”

So young Maria is “impressed that Lee Anderson is unapologetic in standing for and pro-actively proclaiming that Christians have both a right and responsibility to be engaged in government and public policy.” What bravery! What courage!

Why, maybe Lee can really go out on a limb, and muster up the courage to stand up at a Braves game and yell “Go Chipper”!

1. What does pro-life and being a Christian have to do with agriculture? 2. Are these the same farmers who want to continue to exploit migrant workers? 3. If they want to get rid of the EPA, shouldn’t they want to get rid of farm subsidies, government contracts, and wage credits too?

Sidebar: Gabby wins gold, but her mom goes bankrupt over $80,000. Romney’s horse finished last, but got an $80,000 tax break. Just think, the Koch Brothers could have funded every American Olympian for a generation.

Not that much of this will matter but Ballou’s response was very entertaining.

” What does pro-life and being a Christian have to do with agriculture?”

The radical fringe Republicans, or the mainstream in Georgia, model themselves after the Taliban – where guys stand on the street corners and hit women, they deem to be demonstrating lude behavior, (not looking at the ground), with sticks. It’s all about making sure that women stay in their place.

In other news, Maria will be running for Mayor of Hahira. With her deep SW Georgia roots, the positive policy train rolls on!

Most of these “damn the EPA ” folks, can not remember rivers on fire in the NE, due to chemicals, poisned/fishless Great lakes, and smog over some or cities so bad you could not see cross town. Yep let then give up the subsidies first.

Hum not sure what Jesus would do if he/she comes to America. Pretty sure if he/she came to Atlanta it might be decided Mother earth needs an enema. Wonder if he would seek out those pesky EPA critters for advice or decide to dig the hole in the Gold dome…
On the other hand he/she might decide to make the hole the size of GA…
Just sayin.

Let’s get rid of the EPA so that farmers can send produce to market covered in pesticides and herbicides that have killed off half the bee populations on the earth, which is eventually going to cause crop failures and famine all over the world. And so what if these poisons cover the veggies your 4 year old eats, probably causing him to die of some hideous form of cancer at a young age. His life doesn’t matter to lee anderson and maria sheffield, who think that zygote Americans must have priority over the living breathing Americans already out of the womb.

I wonder if either of these fine Americans has heard of the Salt River in Idaho, where two-headed trout are becoming the norm for a day’s catch of angling. Those anti-government, anti-EPA sorts up there are certainly rethinking their stance on the EPA’s role in protecting us against unmitigated use of chemicals. Or maybe folks in south Ga, want to catch 4 lb bass with an added bonus of 3 pounds of tumors.

@ BRW

The problem with td and those who share his distorted perception of reality is, they’re allowed to vote.

If Rush tells them the planet reversed its rotation, and the sun comes up in the west, they will take his word over their compass readings.

That would be ok if it did’nt have an effect on everyone, but it does – it’s how you end up with governors as inept as Perdue and Deal, and even worse, on a national level, people like td (Scalia) end up on the Supreme Court. Soon, you will be able to order rocket launchers and hand grenades over the internet, they will burn science books, and women will be wearing sacks over their heads.

@Wilbur, what organization would you most closely compare the Right Wing Fringe division of religion if not the Taliban? Name any metric you admire about the religious zealots that are determined to control every aspect of our lives, and I will give you the comparable one in the Taliban playbook. Even right down to the weapon toting “But it’s my God given right to carry an assault weapon.”

I’ve long felt it odd that some people speak as if they believe a person’s religious beliefs somehow make them more qualified to serve in an elected position…..in a country whose founders, in the deliberately- and decidedly-secular Constitution they gave us, specifically prohibited any religious test as a qualification to hold office.

Yet these same people often self-proclaim themselves to be ‘Constitutionalists’?

I think most people running just look at someone like lifelong Congressman Charlie Rangel who showed up in Washington 35 years ago without two nickles to rub together and on a Congressman’s salary, living in two places, two of the most expensive places in the US to live by the way, ended up wealthy……..I really think that’s the prize at the end of the day. What can a man really be bought for?

Yes, cc, we do have elections. But why do most incumbents, like Charlie up in NY, get continually re-elected? Not because they are so great; they have advantage because of money and name recogniton. System is corrupt. Charlie should have been retired a long time ago. He is a perfect example of what is wrong with politics and Washington, D.C.
