Gay marriage react good news for Romney in Georgia — but women voters a problem

A new Gallup Poll says a slight majority (54 percent) of American adults continues to say that same-sex relations are morally acceptable:

newsweekcover

Public acceptance of gay/lesbian relations as morally acceptable grew slowly but steadily from 38% in 2002 to 56% in 2011 and is now holding at the majority level….

The 63% now saying gay relations should be legal nearly matches the record-high 64% of a year ago, which came after a long-term increase in support for legality from 32% in 1986.

That’s hardly the case in Georgia. A Landmark/RosettaStone poll of 600 likely voters, commissioned by Channel 2 Action News and released as the weekend began, shows that President Barack Obama’s personal endorsement of gay marriage is likely to harden support for presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney in Georgia.

Read the cross tabs here. The automated poll has an MOE of +/- 4 percent. A summary:

– Romney leads Obama, 51 to 40 percent in Georgia. Support largely falls along racial lines, with 80 percent of African-Americans — a level low enough to be worth a question or two — expressing support for Obama and 70 percent of white voters backing Romney.

– But among women voters, Romney’s lead shrinks to 47 to 44 percent – a statistical tie.

– 59 percent would oppose changing Georgia law (and presumably, the state constitution) to permit gay marriage. A plurality of black voters (41 percent) legalization, and a strong majority (71 percent) of white voters would oppose it.

– 55 percent of Obama supporters would favor legalizing gay marriage, and 88 percent of Mitt Romney supporters oppose it.

– 53 percent say they would be less likely to support Obama because of his endorsement of marriage equality; 29 percent said it would make them more likely. But here’s the figure singled out by Landmark’s Mark Rountree:

When voters who are undecided in the presidential election are isolated, 64 percent of these undecided voters say they are “less” likely to vote for Obama because of the issue, while just 8 percent are “more” likely.

The Washington Times reports that House Republicans are quietly working with the campaign of presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney to fashion a unified approach to health care:

Hill Republicans said coordinating with Mr. Romney, who is the party’s presumptive presidential nominee, boosts the chances that the two sides can avoid clashing over one of the big issues of the fall campaign but it ups the chances that the House GOP will miss its self-imposed June deadline for rolling out its alternative to Mr. Obama’s blueprint.

“From the policy perspective, we can do all these great things, but if [Mr. Romney‘s] not on the same page with us, then that’s a recipe for political disaster,” Rep. Phil Gingrey, Georgia Republican and a medical doctor who sponsored the medical-malpractice reform the House passed in March, [said]. “So, clearly, there has to be some coordination on all of that.”

Be interesting to see how few Dem candidates show up to brace our dear leader, Barry Oblamer at his fund raising events. Obviously, he has no chance in Georgia, and is just here to collect the loot.

GA’s attitude on gay marriage is irrelevant.
The only thing is whether Obama loses GA by 5 percentage points or 10 percentage points.
GA is simply not in play for Democrats for the general election.

The issue is whether this affects OH, IN, VA, NC and FL significantly.

However, I don’t see this as a major issue. The issue will still be the economy.
Any gay related issues have already been factored into current polling due to the repeal of DADT.

Out of work voters are ticked off and they are not going to take it any more. Oblama’s big government socialism isn’t what voters want and he will find out in the upcoming election. What’s interesting in the Gallup poll is that 56% of people don’t have a problem with homosexuality from a moral perspective, yet 63% approve of legalizing gay relationships.

7% of folks think it should be legally recognized but don’t think it’s moral.

I don’t know whether to be encouraged by that or scared.

It’s interesting that Obama chose to embrace the Liberal base instead of the African American base. The African American community does not embrace homosexuality. It is well documented in many African American coming out biographies that the family as well as the community abhorred this type of behavior.

I suppose Mr. Obama is more worried about the Liberals in California when he makes endorsements like this.

The one main factor is religion over common bonds.

The African American community is majority Baptist. If you think they are preaching homosexual equality from the pulpit then you dont know Baptists very well.

Granted the Baptist Coalition of the South banned Romney over his Mormonism so Obama might just consider the whole area a wash.

It will come back to haunt him. Folks out in public will say anything not to be seen as politically incorrect. However, in the voting booth quite the opposite can occur. Look at North Carolina: several polls had the vote neck-and neck. After the voting, however, it was a butt-whoopin’. The line has to be drawn somewhere, folks! Obama can mitigate the effect of endorsing gay marriage by stating that while he personally believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman (which he has already stated), his personal beliefs take a back seat to what is fair for all citizens of the United States.

Actually the whole silly issue can be resolved quite simply.
Acknowledge that there is a civil and a religious component to marriage.
Right now, whether you get married in a church or a hot air balloon, you still have to get a marriage license and certificate from a state agency.
Let the churches recognize or refuse to recognize same sex marriages as they see fit.

This will force the naysayers to defend banning same sex marriage by defining how society in general is harmed to the point where it outweighs the right of all US citizens to being treated equally in the eyes of the law completely outside the context of religion.

Maybe in 5th grade son.
In higher learning institutions they talk about the independents and the undecideds. Which is where most elections are won or lost.

Folks who would have voted for Obama but are turned off by his support for gay marriage are NOT gonna vote for Romney. They may stay home though.

In the same vein, folks who lean conservative who have issues with Romney’s Mormonism are not going to pull a lever for Obama. They will likely stay home as well.

In a way, this may be a pretty interesting political calculation from the Obama camp. They are getting the issue of religion into the conversation through the backdoor. The folks who strongly object to the gay issues based on religious beliefs are going to have confront their discomfort with Romney’s Mormonism. This may not be about attracting votes to the Obama side, but depressing enthusiasm for Romney.

Really and truly, it’s better that gay men love and marry each other, than to pretend to love, and actually marry, you. Seriously. How many people brought up in an intolerant religious atmosphere (Faeloe @ 10:30) choose to keep their standing in their communities and neighborhoods and families by playing a role they cannot sustain?

Romney is so out of touch, just listen to the language he uses, he is stuck in the 50’s. “Hijinks” and “scare the dickens” are two of his latest expressions. The guy is not normal – he doesn’t cuss, drink alcohol or caffeinated beverages, eat chocolate, and belittles military service. He clearly views women as subservient and is a leader in a church that far from mainstream. His views on foreign policy are out of date (Russia our #1 adversary, really MItt?) and show he is poorly informed about the world.

I will just put it this way. When someone has been made to drink from a separate water fountain, enter and dine in the back of restaurants, denied hotel accomodations, the right to vote, equal access to employment/ education, economic opportunity and all of that because they are gay, THEN tell me how they are “oppressed”. Until then, spare me all that yang about this being a civil rights issue. The only issue is that they want to have licensed marriage. I’m sure the ONLY competing argument of one time interracial marriage challenges would come up, but then again it goes to the heart of whether being gay is a choice or not. I happen to believe it is, simply because of the way people swing in an out of sexuality. You are born with the color of your skin. I’m sure the advocates will now toss the “hatred” and “homophobic” thing around now. Go right ahead. I don’t fear or hate gays. Just do not embrace the lifestyle choice – my prerogative.

“Until then, spare me all that yang about this being a civil rights issue.”

Blacks do not own “civil rights” just because of the horrible treatment they received in this country. Civil rights are not a contest. Gays have their own issues. I for one will speak up for blacks, gays, hispanics, jews, women, Muslims, Christians, red heads, whites, fat people, heck even Republicans on issues of civil rights. Civil rights are not a commodity.

Joesph Lowery has it right. Yes blacks have had it bad, and despite the fact that he has his own personal issues with gays he thinks they deserve the same rights and respect as everyone else.

Al Sharpton said “We are glad that President Obama has joined Dr. Joseph Lowery, Dr. Julian Bond and so many others in full embrace of equality for gay and lesbian individuals in our country. We also welcome the civil debate on this issue that will surely spring. And we encourage all individuals to keep all issues of import to our communities in mind in the days ahead, and we seek to secure equal justice, opportunity and dignity for all God’s children.”

Yes so “many others,” including John Lewis and the late Coretta Scott King.

WOW’s right, this won’t mean a tinker’s damn about the ultimate outcome in Georgia…after all this state has been a lost cause for, seemingly, forever but certainly since ‘we/they’ allowed the ‘02 election to be stolen, a good man and a fine Senator to be ’swiftboated’ by Chambliss and an effective, hard-working, progressive Governer replaced by an idiot peckerwood like Sonny Perdue. I won’t call you folks names because no single ‘label’ suffices…just know that ‘we’ know that you’re driven by greed and bigotry regardless of the ‘minority’ in question and that your greatest fear is that once ‘you’ become a minority that those in the majority will treat you the way you’ve treated them…and as one that has been in the ‘majority’ for all these years, count me among those that are afraid that your bigotry and greed will, in the end, get us all.

As for contributing to Obama…sure, it won’t matter in Georgia but it might someplace else and in enough states that your ‘party’ will fail to win any damn thing…frankly it’s the only hope for true ‘equality’ in the country where that’s, equality, is the first of those things that we, supposedly, hold as ’self-evident’.

You hold a pretty provincial attitude when it comes to the term civil rights.
I don’t think you are a hater or homophobic, I think you are ignorant when it comes homosexuality.
There is considerable science to back up the claim that there is a genetic component to being gay.
That there is a spectrum to sexual preference is part of human nature. Just as some people can take or leave strawberry ice cream while others abhor and yet others crave means there are rarely absolutes when it comes to being human.

Gays have been denied housing, jobs and access to medical care for decades. They have been beaten and killed for simply being gay. So spare me the back of the bus history lesson.

When a society can suppress the most basic rights of a segment of its citizens simply because they are uncomfortable with how they prefer to live their lives and that preference in no way impinges upon the rights of others, then that society cannot in good conscience consider itself a just and fair and free society.

You are absolutely correct, civil rights is NOT a “contest”. That is exactly this entire gay agenda need not be loosely linked to or equated to the “civil rights” sought by Blacks, which were simply to be accepted as human and as such have basic HUMAN rights..This particular issue is a single issue – government sanctioned same sex marriage. It just appears that we try to blur the lines to advance the agenda, and it just isn’t the same. Gays and the gay agenda are extremely powerful and influential in this country. They flourish educationally, financially and professionally on the whole. Commit a crime against a gay person, see what happens. Conversely, commit a crime against a Black person, see what happens. Hey, be with whom you desire. I am all for civil unions, domestic partnerships and the like. I also think though that they should be tweaked so that they are more comprehensive. It should be evident by now that the “man” has too much perverted negative energy e.g. anti-God, anti Constitution, anti-American, abortion, integration, gay marriage, etc under the guise of progress. And because of it, he should stay the hell out of Georgia.

According to Hosea Williams, Rudolf Giuliani and other mayors chased “intelligent” blacks etc out of New York City and the north in general to the Peach State and the south specifically. As a result, everything decent in the south has continued to go downhill under the banner of progress.

Obama should go to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Egypt, or perhaps of his place of birth, Kenya with that negative energy. If my memory serves me correctly, the last man who decided to entertain it continues to reap what he sowed.

The term “civil rights” does not belong to the descendants of slaves in this country. It applies to anyone seeking equal treatment under the law. That’s what gay people are doing. If they are comparing it to anyone else’s struggle for equal rights, the normal response would be empathy and support, not searching for your bigger victim card and crying “waaaahhhhhh…we copyrighted the term Civil Rights!”

I think most people see marriage solely as a religious institution. At a time in history, that is all it was for African Americans because we could not legally get married. The reality is, marriage is sometime religious and spiritual, but all the time legal. You can marry in the biggest cathedral on the planet, but if you don’t send the license to the clerks office, it is not legally recognized. We don’t disallow atheist the opportunity to get married. It is recognized by any and everyone who comes in contact with them. There is no difference here. Same sex couples want the legal recognition of their union. The religious or spiritual aspect is not for us to decide!

Results are based on telephone interviews conducted May 3-5, 2012 with a random sample of –1,024—adults, aged 18+, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the margin of error is ±4 percentage points.
For results based on the sample of –534—national adults in Form A and –490—national adults in Form B, the maximum margins of sampling error are ±5 percentage points.
Interviews are conducted with respondents on landline telephones and cellular phones, with interviews conducted in Spanish for respondents who are primarily Spanish-speaking. Each sample includes a minimum quota of 400 cell phone respondents and 600 landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas among landline respondents by region. Landline numbers are chosen at random among listed telephone numbers, cell phone numbers are selected using random-digit dial methods. Landline respondents are chosen at random within each household on the basis of which member had the most recent birthday.
Samples are weighted by gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education, region, adults in the household, and phone status (cell phone only/landline only/both, having an unlisted landline number, and being cell phone mostly). Demographic weighting targets are based on the March 2011 Current Population Survey figures for the age 18+ non-institutionalized population living in U.S. telephone households. All reported margins of sampling error include the computed design effects for weighting and sample design.
In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.

Marriage licenses are just plain nonsense as they are simply a way for government to plunder more of our money to waste on failed social programs. We should seperate marriage and state!

First of all Ghasty, I made my saving throw at your feeble confusion spell [http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/ghoul.htm]

Second, when posting the details of a poll, you might want to post THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IE THE RESULTS! LOL

Typical contard, so busy to copy and paste that he didn’t even check to see what the result was when he did it.

Which of course tells ME that A Ghast actually meant to say that the majority by a 95% margin support Gay Civil Rights. ;)

@Our Name Is a Dreary Sound Unto The Lord For It Is Long And Makes People Snore –

I made my check traps roll that your friend Ghast set up.

I’ll take your trap and reverse it.

If we accept the notion that people without empathy should be able to vote, then we should abolish the laws that keep murders and rapists in prison. The perversion is exactly the same.

Be careful in your response. I THINK I AM SUPER CLEVER. HINT HINT HINT. I AM TRYING TO TRICK YOU. HINT.

Yeah then we can marry pigs and stuffed animals and our bongs.

That argument is tired and well-debunked and not worthy of discussion – which come to think of it, is probably why you posted it in the first place.

That’s a good example of avoiding a response… Instead of reversing what I said, you perverted it just like criminals do. Not one sane person has said that people without empathy should not be allowed to vote? How stupid can you be?

On the other hand, the vast majority of people said that men should not be allowed to marry men and women should not be allowed to marry women.

Our Opinion Of Ourself Is Lofty And We Must Question Who Is The Servant of the Devil

Fine. Here is a response. Your question is contarded. You are contarded. Your entire philosophy is contarded. Only a contard would argue something so dumb. Only a contard doesn’t understand the age of a citizens consent, and only a contard would deliberately answer a question specifically set up to be a trap.

You are contardedly contarded contard who wants to marry and spawn more contards.

*I* am a criminal for having different views than you contard? Well then I might as well go full out criminal. Post your address so I can sent it to my criminal buddies and send them to ‘tax’ you. Or just report you to the IRS which you’ve probably cheated 9 ways to sunday.

On the other hand, the ‘vast majority’ of people says that men can’t marry men? This ‘vast majority’ is, in fact, a minority contard, but even if we accepted your magical contard reality in which contards constituted the majority population of the land, it would still be wrong to give people without empathy the right to vote because they are monsters.

So if I’m a criminal, you’re a monster contard.

And comparing apples to penguins and water to seventeen impossible things before breakfast is your stock and trade contard.

Contard.

As perverted as Aaron Burr V Mexico is, he refused to respond to me thereby avoiding the trap. But Look before…fell headlong into it.

If states are perverted enough to allow men to marry men and women marry women, they are perverted enough to allow men to marry boys and women to marry girls.

If two words is the impediment to supporting this perversion, simply have the general assembly pass legislation to define consenting adults as persons reaching puberty not younger than 11 years old. And with a nod and a wink we have consenting adults.

Amen?

Our Name Is Stupid And We Thinks We Are Clever, We Serves Our Master Sauron, Gollup

Someone read a sunday school lesson and thinks he’s an Apostle.

And I fell headlong into it after avoiding it to show how much of a hypocritical contard you are.

First of all, you try to side step MY point by using the word ‘perverted’ but your basis of pervesion is THE BIBLE whereas mine is THE CONSTITUTION.

Second of all, disgusting contard, your logic is circular. You are supporting your argument by saying ‘If you are arguing X, then they will do Y as well because I said so.’ which is a typically contarded response.

And, guess what contard, technically the legislature CAN legally declare the age of consent as 11, but we, as a society, decided that having fully mature brains (ie biology ie the demon science) at the age of 18 and 21 (for alchohol) is somehow the magic number to determine the age of consent.

Now is this arbitrary? Sure it is. That we allow biological age but still don’t test for a lack of empathy (or ‘demonic taint’ in your lingo) is indeed a perversion of that which is good.

People like you should not be allowed to vote, but as a society, we still allow it. So mote it be.

Can society say that 11 year olds can be consenting adults?

Sure they can.

Now, are they likely to DO SO contard? No.

Are you listening to this contard? No.

But are you showing that you are not a thinking being capable of having a discussion? Yes!

Is this a civil conversation of the kind that ‘Centrism’ likes to have? No.

I am indeed a name caller.

I don’t engage in deflection, sorry. I said what I said specifically to shoot holes in your argument, and that is that the issue of gay marriage solves the problem of being of supposedly being denied a job or housing because of one’s sexuality. When you go into a job interiew you go in as an INDIVIDUAL, not with your marriage partner (homo OR hetero for that matter). Sure you can cite those individuals who make that claim. So can I. The point is….with some it IS a CONSCIOUS CHOICE and along with that comes the dilemma. We can debate this until blue in the face. Won’t change the facts or history. Hey, it’s YOUR battle. Fight it. It’s just my job to ensure my children know that a mans butt is not intended for another man’s sexual appendage to be in it, nor is a woman’s pelvic area intended to be sexed by another woman’s. THAT’S all there is to it – against YOUR “agenda”. No religious basis (because I am not very religious), that’s just Biology, since we like to talk “Science” so much. You play your position, I play mine. Deuces.

It’s really interesting because the tables are turned fromt he 2004 election. I remember some of my “Christian” friends going on and on about voting for GWB because of a stance against same-sex marriage. They were all for not allowing it to happen. I told them then as I am telling people now–I’m not voting for a Pastor of the United States, I’m voting for a President.

The POTUS made it clear that this was his personal opinion. He has also said that this is an issue that should be dealt with at the state level. Although Repub presidential candidates go on and on about how horrible abortion is, not ONE has ever used the power of his office to change Roe v Wade. I don’t expect President Obama to make any moves towards changing law about gays marrying either.

@Our Mind Is Scrambled By Our Really Long Name And By the Way We Are Totally Racist

Paul said that it is best to teach in the language of the person to whom you speak but if you are so caught up in being right and clever word play that you’re not listening, are you serving God or Satan?

I said what I said. What I said is right.

Society is unlikely to move the age of consent that low.

Society has the power to do whatever it wants unless God is going to send Angels with Machine Guns to enforce the law.

That does not make what society does RIGHT, it just means it CAN.

It is not RIGHT for the age of consent to be 11 because 11 year olds are dumb.

It is not RIGHT that you are allowed to vote, because you are dumb.

But society does not always do what is right.

You need to know your history Man With Long Name – the age of consent in America was at one time as low as 9 and today is as high as 17:

The American colonies followed the English tradition, and the law was more of a guide. For example, Mary Hathaway (Virginia, 1689) was only 9 when she was married to William Williams. Sir Edward Coke (England, 17th century) “made it clear that the marriage of girls under 12 was normal, and the age at which a girl who was a wife was eligible for a dower from her husband’s estate was 9 even though her husband be only four years old.”[4]

In the United States, by the 1880s, most states set the age of consent at 10–12, and in one state, Delaware, the age of consent was only 7. A New York Times article states that it was still aged 7 in Delaware in 1895.[7] Female reformers and advocates of social purity initiated a campaign in 1885 to petition legislators to raise the legal age of consent to at least 16, with the ultimate goal to raise the age to 18. The campaign was successful, with almost all states raised the age of consent to 16–18 by 1920.

See what you learn when you read? Fear is nothing more than stupidity dressed as a cheap hookER.

Check out post 4:54pm. In no uncertain terms, he is saying that it’s normal or acceptable in his eyes for a man to marry a 7 year old girl and presumably for a man to marry a 7 year old boy because it was done 2 hundred or so years ago.

And post 4:56pm is saying that because African Americans have not supported man boy and woman girl dalliances etc in the past, it equates to bigotry and hatred which has caused AIDS to ravish our community.
