John Lewis uses his jailhouse mug – to raise street cred and campaign cash

As a general rule, a politician’s career ends on the day that his jailhouse mug shot appears in the local newspaper. Yet there are exceptions.

JL poster

U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-Atlanta, has decided to use his arrest record – more than 40 times, the latest in 2009 – as a way to raise campaign cash for his Democratic primary race against former Fulton County judge Michael Johnson.

For $30, you can get an autographed poster marking Lewis’ visit to the Atlanta Police Department on Dec. 22, 1963. That arrest followed a sit-in at the local Toddle House – a grillery akin to today’s Waffle House – to protest its refusal to serve blacks.

(You can actually see a young Lewis, minutes away from his Toddle House arrest, in this archival footage from WSB-TV.)

In addition to raising cash, the jailhouse photo – offered on T-shirts and coffee mugs, too – serves as a reminder of Lewis’ past as a civil rights leader. And may give the 72-year-old congressman, who has held the 5th District seat since 1987, a touch of cool as well.

Beverly Isom, spokeswoman for the Lewis campaign, explained the slogan on the poster — “Getting into good trouble since 1960″ — as a corruption of advice Lewis’ mother gave him as a young lad. To stay out of trouble.

Hahaha! LOVE IT! Excellent work, Lewis team! What an superb use of resources.

Makes a great gift, too! Will y’all have some at the meeting tonight? I’ll bring my checkbook.

John Lewis is a hero. I must wonder what I would have done in his situation. I’d like to hope I’d behave similarly, but it’s hard to say.

He earned his stripes, clever way to market himself.

Maybe Blago can use that tactic when he gets out of the slammer and decides to run for office again.

Smart move! Yes, it is a great gift and sends a message as well. You must speak out and stand up for what is right, even if it means going to jail because the “rulers” have made unjust laws.

A quick google search of Mr. Johnson looks like he appears to be an ally of Kaseem Reed.

That’s enough to decide for me in my book. Especially if Reed endorses him.

At this time you can only embrace your arrest record. Good for him.

Good for Lewis. I mean most of his constitutes are on their way to, from, or are in jail. Makes him seem more relatable. Of course he could actually help his supports by encouraging them not to get into trouble and instead get jobs, stay off of drugs, and have kids as married couples instead of baby daddies and mommas, but hell, can’t get any votes that way!

Until I saw “Eyes on the Prize,” I never knew what heroes Lewis and all the civil rights pioneers were. The series should be required viewing by all races. I thank them that a race war was avoided and the “hoods” should be thanking them and taking advantage of all the opportunities made available to them because of their early sacrifices.

Just another effort by John Lewis to remind us of what he did 40 years ago. Too bad he hasn’t done diddly in the last 20 years for his constituents. Black on Black crime is still rampant in his district, kids have no respect for their elders and the hopelessness is going on a third generation all while Lewis picks up awards for what he did in the 60’s. Tell us John, what have you done for us lately?????

kjsdf, the man can do what he wants. He’s healthy and able to still seek to serve the people. But you in your limited “wisdom” try to tell him what to do. you’re probably fat, unhealthy, bitter, and when you reach his age, will already be dead!

Redistricting was a joke Ed Lindsey- thanks for keeping all the Republicans in Northwest Atlanta in a district that is now 80% Democrat. Lewis was a hero in the 60’s but he is a zero today. As someone in my thirties with rather liberal social views I am so tired of this guy living in the past. The 5th district has one of the most dated/ineffective members of Congress. I am am equal time on this, the GOP has their versions of John Lewis- see Arlen Specter our representatives should not be in for lifetime appointments.

50 dollars to Johnson today

Derrick Boazman @ 1380 waok radio asked a good question yesterday. How do you push black children toward excellence? The perverted integrationist audience @1380 waok couldn’t come close to the addressing that question correctly. 99.99% of black “adults” are so conditioned in the fantasy world that anyone with half of a brain can anticipate their answers e.g. some black children do not excel just like some white children do not excel. You know the drill. They are talking about incomparable apples and oranges unawares. But some of them sound intelligent…LOL

Like Presidential Medal of Freedom winner John Lewis, black children can’t authentically excel because they live integration induced fantasy lives which is controlled and manipulated by other races of people. In reality, it is impossible to win the Presidential Medal of Freedom given the deteriorated state of the black masses since 1963. So there it is Boazman. Under the present circumstances, it is impossible to have black children achieve authentic excellence in the real world because they are conditioned primarily by treacherous integrationist leaders like John Lewis to live fantasy lives in exchange for food, clothing, shelter, money, fame, status, employment, healthcare…

Amen?

I will give him credit for turning a beating he took in Alabama 40 years ago into a career, but he’s still nothing more than a typical civil rights-era warhorse: grasping at straws to stay relevant in an increasingly colorblind society. I’m sure his jail-time will earn him “cred” with his true supporters, since most of them are graduates of Fulton County’s revolving door justice system. I love how visibly uncomfortable he gets around the Obama, since you know a black President is the worst thing ever for his sales pitch.

Like a sad old boxer that stays in the ring for too many years after his brain has gone to mush. Can we just give him a “lifetime achievement award” and let him go sit on a porch rocker somewhere?

Frankly, I stopped listening to John Lewis a long time ago, mainly because I can’t understand what he is saying. Maybe he will spend some of the money that he makes on diction lessons.

He is no hero, he is a traitor and liar, that violated his oath of office and voted for Obama Care, which enslaves both blacks and whites to the government just for the simple action of having a pulse. While he promotes abortion, which is literally black genocide before they they even get a pulse. Going by the CDC’s website, black babies are killed at a rate 3x that of white babies.

If Lewis had helped fight against abortion, there would have been 14-16 more million black babies born since 1973. Those two generation of blacks would have provided at least 20 million more black voters in 2012. You know, the same number of illegal Mexicans now in America taking away the lower wage jobs that poor black urban youth (unemployment for black youth is 50% – thanks Obama) could have used as a stepping stone out of poverty.

Lewis is not a hero, he is a race baiting ghetto pimp that has helped promote the genocide (Luke 1:36) of colored people in America and has helped keep them in poverty for generations, while enslaving them with Obama Care, while violating Deut 28:12 “thou shall not borrow from other nations”.

Some Christian hero, his real jail time will start when he leaves this earth. Same with Hank Johnson.

He not the only congressman who is over 70 years of age. And I bet you can’t name or think of anything positive they have done or doing. ….Stonetouch, Mr Lewis is not responsible for the disrespectful kids running around here today. It’s starts at home and especially yours. I’m sure the young people in your family is just as rude and disrespectful as the one out here today.

How funny! If you are concerned about running for re-election on your political record, you run on your arrest record.
I suppose that Rep. Lewis thinks that he must establish street cred, like a 15 year old rapper.

@john: “If Lewis had helped fight against abortion, there would have been 14-16 more million black babies born since 1973. Those two generation of blacks would have provided at least 20 million more black voters in 2012.” Yes, that is exactly what those women (and partners/spouses) were thinking back then – let’s consider NOT killing these babies in order than when the (obviously) inevitable Obama comes on the scene and BECOMES POTUS, we’ll have the necessary votes to keep him in there. People do not think like that – it is the immediate needs that are thought of. Plus, if there were more people to vote, there would probably also be more people being supported on welfare.
