President Barack Obama and the first lady will mingle with soldiers at Fort Stewart on the Georgia coast today.
The official agenda, via Larry Peterson and the Savannah Morning News:
President Barack Obama is due to launch a national crackdown on scams used to bilk veterans out of their federal education benefits.
The White House on Thursday described an executive order Obama will sign when he and first lady Michelle Obama visit soldiers, veterans and military families.
White House aides have pointed to today’s excursion to a red state as proof that Obama isn’t just visiting electoral swing states on Air Force One. But a clearly jaded Washington Post posits that today’s trip is a case of niche marketing aimed at “a novel and potentially fruitful voter set: military families:”
The message from Obama and Biden is clear: They will campaign on the president’s foreign policy record and actions to bolster services for veterans while aggressively criticizing Romney on the same subjects — and issuing pointed examples of the Republican’s lack of proposals to assist returning veterans and their families….
The overall strategy gives Obama a chance to widen his audience on military matters at a time when war-weariness has grown — even among Republicans and in less Obama-friendly Southern states. The push also echoes a hallmark quality of the president’s 2008 campaign: its ability to identify supporters from unlikely regions and constituencies.

Not-quite-but-nearly-former GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, who is still making appearances in North Carolina, lost his Secret Service protection last night, according to NBC News.
***
Ninth District congressional candidate Doug Collins sent out a fund-raising email this morning that included this undated YouTube clip of his chief GOP rival, Gainesville radio talk show host Martha Zoller, explaining her position on abortion:
Says Zoller:
“I think I’m a different kind of pro-life person, in that I don’t think abortion should be illegal, but I think the way we change people’s minds on life issues are not with legislation.”
Collins, a lawmaker from Gainesville, has begun calling himself a “consistent conservative.” From the email:
”You’ll never have to worry about where I stand on the issue of abortion, and I vow to stand behind the same convictions I’ve had throughout my lifetime. You’ll never have to wonder if my campaign rhetoric matches with the beliefs of my past.”
The response from Zoller’s campaign strategist, Joel McElhannon:
This race is between a conservative firebrand in Martha Zoller and a wimp.
Martha Zoller was endorsed by Georgia Right to Life before Doug Collins. Why? Doug’s legislative endorsement was suspended by GRTL because he was killing their pro life legislation in committee over the last several sessions at the request of leadership.
Eleven second manufactured clips from years ago will not change the fact that when it’s time to take a stand, Doug Collins consistently waves the yellow flag of cowardice.
After seeing the above remarks, Collins strategist Chip Lake messaged to say that the video clip is from the 2011 CPAC gathering in Washington.

Better Georgia, a progressive group headed up by Bryan Long, has been engaged in a campaign to draw attention to the link between Republican state lawmakers and the American Legislative Exchange Council, a powerful private, non-profit group that generates conservative legislation for use in state capitols across the nation.
Six years ago, state Rep. Earl Ehrhart, R-Powder Springs, headed up ALEC. From Jon Gillooly and the Marietta Daily Journal:
Ehrhart responded: “Mr. Long doesn’t like free speech, doesn’t like advocacy for anything other than what he wants. The majority of the citizens in this county and this state are going to agree with the principles of ALEC. Again, back to the founding principles of this country. I’ll stand them up against his tent principles all day long. I’m not afraid of some Occupy pansy sitting in a tent without a bath, I’m sorry.”
Replied Long this morning:
“Representative Ehrhart sees public scrutiny like a bad rash. If he has nothing to hide, he’ll tell us every ALEC backed bill so that voters can decide whether they agree or not. The secrecy of this group has lasted too long.
***
In a major break with the past, this year’s farm bill is moving through the halls of Washington without the support of Southern farmers. From Politico.com:
Cotton won concessions on its own revenue protection program, including a decision to lift the acreage cap on land enrolled. But the leadership resisted any return to a countercyclical program with target prices, and Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) bluntly warned that peanuts and rice will take a “huge hit” and are left “without any safety net whatsoever.”
Indeed, corn and soybeans appear the big winners in what would be an historic shift away from direct cash payments and price supports in favor of new forms of subsidized crop insurance.

Georgia VOTERS certainly prefer conservative ALEC over Better Georgia, a progressive (read liberal) group.
The opposite is as certainly true for AJC writers, editors, a majority of their readers and posters.

Alleged Centrist,
More likely scenario: Most Georgia voters are blissfully unaware of the American Legislative Exchange Council and the corporate interests they represent OR the group called Better Georgia that dares to suggest that we deserve better than this current mess of a state government and being at the bottom of every good list and the top of every bad one.
You get “alleged” today for the way you condescend to us by adding the “liberal” label to the word progressive. Newsflash, Sparky: if we can read this blog, we probably are (a) familiar with basic vocabulary, and (b) sick of haters boiling every single complex issue into one of two labels — AS IF that somehow proves anything.

1. GRTL’s endorsements are for sale to the highest bidder…sign their pledge and purchase their list.
2. 2011 isn’t “years ago”as ‘We are coming to Athens and bringing hell with us” Joel states, it is last year.
3. Trying to distract the voters with fabricated committee votes and name calling won’t work in the 9th. Martha should stand by her words and just admit that she isn’t a social conservative.

@ GaBlue – I agree that most Georgia voters probably are unaware of both the ALEC and Better Georgia groups. But I stand by the philosophy preferences I stated.
The term “progressive” is purposely being substituted by liberals and the media simply because the “liberal” philosophy has fallen out of favor with a majority of voters. Such re-branding and spin is done to confuse perception, so I do a service by equating the two.

Martha should stand by her words and just admit that she isn’t a social conservative.
You mean a social authoritarian.
A libertarian will try to change your mind to get you to do the right thing, but in the end recognize that your rights are important.
A authoritarian will use the awesome power of the government to enforce their view.
People think “conservative” is a catch-all for their position. At this point, it’s a marketing term. There are other terms available that are more descriptive and haven’t been abused for political gain.

Obama’s visit to the military base is simply political smoke and mirrors. He was raised by left wing, pro socialist parents, (Least us not forget, one of them NOT an American citizen) not of Christian faith, the basis for which this country was formed.
He was indoctrinated into believing that capitalism and America are evil. He won’t change. He is absolutely the WORST President that this country has had the displeasure of having. The one and ONLY thing that I can think of that he’s done that was successful was the bailout of the auto companies. They have either all paid back their debt or are about to and are starting to make money again. That’s the only thing. Everything else has been a disaster.
He said that Bush was irresponsible and unpatriotic for running up the debt 5 trillion dollars in EIGHT years. Well, if that’s the case Mr. Obama, then what do you call yourself for running up the debt 6 trillion dollars in LESS THAN FOUR years? With plans to add an additional 5- 8 trillion over the next four if reelected? Absolutely pathetic!!
Obama stated that he was his brother’s keeper. Well, isn’t his brother dirt poor and live in a mud hut in Africa? Yeah, I think I’ll pass on being kept by Obama and his horrific administration.

I simply made an observation about different philosophies between GA voters and the AJC. Please note that I am NOT conservative (and they have not re-branded). My secular humanism, pro-choice stance, and agreement with liberals concerning the “Buffet rule” would get me tarred and feathered at one of their conclaves. I am not a liberal/progressive either -
This is from Wiipedia:
Progressivism is a general political philosophy advocating or favoring social, political, and economic reform or changes usually in opposition to conservative or reactionary ideologies.
Today, members of the Democratic Party or the Green Party of the United States are most likely to self-identify as progressives. In the US Congress there exists the Congressional Progressive Caucus, which is often in opposition to the more conservative Democrats, who form the Blue Dogs caucus. Some of the more notable progressive members of Congress have included Ted Kennedy, Russ Feingold, Dennis Kucinich, Barney Frank, Bernie Sanders, Al Franken, John Conyers, John Lewis, and Paul Wellstone.

Obummer is flailing like an energiser liar.as his deliberate community organiser trashing of the USA is starkly exposed. The SCOTUS is about to “crucify, EPA fascist style of course, his regime in several big cases of repugnant leftist federal over reach. Mitt is “crucifying” him in the polls, as his selfish grasping wife’s ongoing greed is finally exposed – but only after two years of cynical liberal stonewalling (by the supposedly most open admin in history) and a selfless lawsuit by the heroes at Judicial Watch allows the folks to find out almost $500,000 of taxpayers hard earned was utterly wasted on an utterly undeserved Spanish holiday. No word yet on the presumably equally expensive and equally pointless jaunt to South Afrika. What you “know” is incorrect. I did serve, and got first hand, up close and personal experience. I am NOT retired from the military and I DON’T get a nickel of pension. Although I qualify for VA benefits, I don’t use them – they are there for those in more need than me. I can get a free GA drivers’ license and discounts at many retail stores by simply asking and showing by Honorable Discharge DD-214 – I don’t do those things, either. I volunteered, and greatly appreciate the training and character building instilled by some of the most respected people I have ever met, and am still in contact.

President Kennedy, “the military man”, thought deepening our involvement was a good idea.
How did that workout?
President Bush, also “a military man”(I know, just play along), was responsible for invading Iraq under false principles, and incompetent leadership including failure at Tora Bora and telling us “mission accomplished” when we weren’t even close!
I think many will take the “community organizer” who got us out of Iraq honorably, got bin Laden in a manner that demonstrates the awesome capability of our armed forces when used correctly, and has been blowing up Al Qaeda operatives quite effectively all while remaining respected around the planet. I like when people don’t throw shoes at our COC!
The truth is that the most voters are not going to want to turn over foreign affairs to a guy without core principles who has hired many Bush 43 people to advise him on foreign policy.

I stand corrected Centrist re your military service, which, by the way, I greatly respect, as I do my friends and relatives who have served as you. I was relying on my memory of an old post of yours which was that you had served 10 or more years in the military and I thought you said you got retirement benefits. But I was wrong on that point and don’t mind apologizing. And I think you deserve the VA safety net and other perks even if you don’t avail yourself of them because you have earned them as part of a nation’s gratitude. Other vets do however and there should be no shame for them. My uncle, who served under Curtis Lemay, would get his pres. drugs at the VA because they were allowed to negotiate prices with drug companies, but chose to get his general medical care through a private insurance plan. Same for my brother-in-law, except he just finds quality of medical care is much higher outside VA.

33 of our 44 Presidents have served two terms, each having CAMPAIGNED for their re-election. Suffice it to say then that 33 of them were “ineffective”….which is why they won re-election. See, makes perfect sense deductively speaking now doesn’t it??

Reason and rationality has no place whatsoever in their lives, neither does honesty.
It kills them inside that this man (Obama) is a master chess player politician who continually rises above and barrels through every obstacle thrown in front of him. What makes it worse is that it wears on their psyche because of the visual image. Phenotypically, he’s NOT SUPPOSED TO BE INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO DO IT!! This man’s resilience, charisma and intelligence flies in the face of everything they have been brainwashed to believe. Fuuuunnneeeeee!

Sarah, It is clear that many in your family must be benefiting from all the social programs that Obama has created for us. I guess that is fine.
However, I graduated high school without help because of my color. I then entered the military because my family didn’t have the funds to pay for my college. Afterwards I paid my way through college, and then got a student loan to pay for my masters degree. I also paid that loan off.
So you see, I need no one to hand me anything. I don’t need anyone to tell me how stupid I must be and that the government needs to help me. I need no one to pay for my healthcare or be a proponent for my cause, because I have healthcare through my employer. I am employed because of hard work, and I think it is great that there are those out there that make much more than I do. It gives me something to strive for. I feel that I am smart enough to attain that level, and see no reason why those who attain those levels should pay more than I pay.
If some of these inner city idiots that live on the tit of the government would get off their rears and work for a living they may have similiar experiences in life.

Response:
¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬I read, with great interest, the comments of Mr. Joel McElhannon, identified as Martha Zoller’s campaign strategist, during which Mr. McElhannon suggested that “Doug Collins consistently waves the yellow flag of cowardice.” I am concerned that the Zoller campaign, obviously struggling with a candidate whose only claim to fame is that of being a talk show host would suggest that a Major in the United States Air Force Reserve, who deployed and served honorable in Iraq is a somehow a coward. How the heck would you know what a coward is? When was the last time you, Mr. McElhannon or your candidate deployed to Iraq? Heck have you or Martha Zoller ever deployed anywhere much less Iraq.
I served in the military for over 32 years. Since the beginning of the war in Iraq, I have deployed 3 times. I was an Explosive Ordnance Disposal officer and commanded teams in Iraq. My teams and I have cleared hundreds of IEDs and thousands of pounds enemy explosives in the field. I have received two Bronze Star medals; one of those was awarded with the “V” device for valor. I am currently retired from the U.S. Air Force secondary to injuries I received in Iraq. I know courageous men and Doug Collins is one of them.
My men were/are battle hardened, we give no quarter to people who we deemed less than honorable. Doug Collins is welcome with us anytime, anywhere. We consider him our chaplain, our friend and we turn to him with our problems because we respect and admire Doug Collins. We know he gives us his best every single day. He has held the hand of wounded Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Marines. He has stood with them during the worst times of their lives, providing comfort when no hope remained. Nothing is harder than watching the suffering of a wounded soldier who knew he was dying; Doug Collins did not run away from that pain, that agony. He ran to it because he cared for those men and women. That, Mr. Joel McElhannon takes courage that you or Ms Zoller will never know.
To call Doug Collins a coward and a wimp is an insult to those of us who have fought for this country and demeaning to those who’s last few moments before they made the ultimate sacrifice were spent with Doug Collins.
Rest assured my family will support Doug Collins because the Zoller campaign has proven themselves dishonorable with these comments.

I bet Sarah loves Herman Cain as much as I do. Well, no…..Herman believes that everyone should earn a living, not look to government to provide it.
Sarah….when you have a cat that has lived on a farm all it’s life, what does it eat? How does it care for itself? It hunts and provides for itself.
What happens when a cat that has lived inside and been fed all it’s life gets let out and has to live on it’s own? It can’t fend for itself, because it has become accustomed to someone providing for it.
That’s the same thing that has happened to all those welfare recipients that I’m sure you call your peers. You have had the government give for so long that you have no idea how to do anything else.
It’s time to learn Sarah. 24’s and gold teeth don’t make the man. What a man can do with his two hands besides drive a Cadillac is what makes the man.

Now if I had been an occupier, or on welfare then maybe I would be licking someone else’s boot. But you see, I had already accomplished enough in my life and had sufficient standing in the financial community that I didn’t need that milk from the government. You see, there are things in life you can do without the help or guidance of the government.
I know its a novel idea, and one you aren’t familiar with, but it can be done.
And yes, I am a nobody just like everyone else. The difference is I don’t have my hand out asking for anything. I can honestly say I have never needed government assistance because I haven’t had kids I couldn’t pay for, and I haven’t given up in life. I’ve worked as hard as i needed to in order to get where I wanted to be in life. I only make $50 an hour, and I dream of making more. But I don’t need anyone else to make that happen for me.

Sarah,
Why are you so ashamed of your race? Why are you so set in the fact that your race is too stupid to do anything for themselves? Why do you let Obama put your race down so? Are you conceding that all in your race cannot think for themselves? Is your only way out rapping or sports? Do you really need so many breaks and so much help?
Don’t you want more than a cell phone and some 24’s?
Or is there hope? Does Herman Cain’s success and ideas about self worth strike a cord within you?

Sarah,
There are many other countries that would love to have your expertise. Why not move to one of those and tout your credentials. Why continue to ruin this one that you so obviously hate?
I imagine that you believe that everything should be given to you because it always has. You likely came from a large family with limited income, and lived on what the government provided you. It has been bred into you that there is no other way.
I on the other hand grew up in Forest Park, in a lower middle income family. I was taught to work for what you want in life. I was taught that government handouts were shameful, because those that needed them had obviously not worked hard enough to take care of what they had.
I never said I was anything special. But at least I don’t have a government telling me I am too stupid as a race to make it on my own, and then subscribing to that thought.
