We know that Newt Gingrich, who avoided the Republican presidential contest in Michigan, will be at the state Capitol this morning.
We know that Gingrich has declared a win in Georgia, which he once represented in Congress, to be crucial to his GOP presidential campaign.
What we didn’t know is whether a win-hungry Rick Santorum, deprived of victory in Michigan by Mitt Romney last night, will put all his eggs in Ohio and seek a post-industrial rematch with Romney. Or might he concentrate on the South?
We’re told this morning that the former Pennsylvania senator, who has a foray into Tennessee today, will be in Dalton at 8 a.m. Thursday for a rally outside City Hall.
Atlanta, GA – Republican Presidential candidate Rick Santorum will visit Georgia tomorrow morning, beginning with a manufacturing plant tour and a Town Hall meeting in Dalton. Santorum will then head toward Atlanta, holding an 11 a.m. rally at the Atlantic Aviation hanger, 240 Airport Road, at Peachtree Dekalb Airport. The event is free and open to the public.
***
We’ve also just gotten word that Ann Romney, wife of Mitt, will be in Georgia for two events on Thursday: A noon appearance at Smokejack Barbecue in Alpharetta, and a 5:30 p.m. appearance for the opening of Romney state headquarters on Maple Street in Buckhead — just down from Newt Gingrich’s headquarters. Both Romney events are open to the public. Take the spousal visit as a sign that her husband isn’t likely to be here before Super Tuesday.
***
And you thought Occupy Atlanta didn’t make much of an impression.
State Capitol police were called to haul a number of protestors out of a Senate Insurance and Labor Committee hearing on SB 469, a measure that – among many other things – would make it a crime to conduct mass picketing at private residences.
From my AJC colleague Kristin Torres:
The bill, drafted by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, passed unanimously through the Senate Insurance and Labor Committee despite nearly an hour of testimony — mostly by union members, advocacy groups and individuals who opposed the bill. Committee members made one change, making it a “high and aggravated” misdemeanor and not a felony for someone convicted of conspiring to commit criminal trespass.
A taste of the language:
A person, or organization that he or she is affiliated with or acting on behalf of, commits an offense when he or she engages in targeted picketing of a private residence that has or intends the effect of interfering with the resident’s right to quiet enjoyment, or when such targeted picketing has or intends the effect of violence or intimidation.
Keep in mind that several condo complexes were within earshot of Occupy Atlanta’s fall camp-out at Five Points in downtown Atlanta.
The measure is sponsored by state Sen. Don Balfour, R-Snellville. Protestors say at least one of their number was arrested and is awaiting a bail hearing. We’ve got a call into the Georgia Building Authority for details.
***
After eight years in the Legislature, state Sen. Greg Goggans, R-Douglas, chairman of the State Insurance and Labor Committee, has decided not to run for re-election, citing the economics of his orthodontic practice in southwest Georgia. From the Blackshear Times:
“This is a very important decision for someone running in the Seventh Senatorial District. It is the largest district in the state covering 4,500 square miles. To serve this district requires a tremendous amount of time away from family and from business. It requires a lot of travel. The expenses are beyond what the $17,000 a year salary covers.
“By announcing my decision now, it will give potential candidates the time to discuss this important decision with their families and to examine their abilities to make it work.”
***
The AJC’s Politifact Georgia this morning challenges GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s assertion that the nation’s unemployment rate is going down because more people are giving up and leaving the workforce.

Santorum, Gingrich, and Paul (descending order of damage) have probably sunk GOP chances of replacing Obama and have made the nomination essentially worthless. None of them have a legitimate shot at getting the nomination, but have wounded and drained Romney enough to almost guarantee incumbent Obama’s reelection by a wide margin. It is hard to fathom the egos or motives involved. Democrat crossover voting against Romney has also contributed, and at least Santorum has publicly encouraged it. The left, including the media, loves it. Even this blog said Gingrich was going to concentrate on Arizona, and Santorum was leading in Michigan (never acknowledged Michigan polls flipped last week).

Increasing health care premiums…I’ve had that happen for each of the past 10 years! Why shouldn’t they pay their fair share? Where are the “50 % of low income folks don’t pay ANY taxes” folks saying that they should pay more? Or does that not apply to our armed forces????
Also, Newt, what are the details of your $2 /gal gas? Nationalizing the oil companies? Another war? Using the chili dogs and onion rangs at the V? Fess up!

@ Road Scholar – There is NO proposal for the bottom 50% of the lower income folks to pay any taxes. The proposal of increasing premiums on those who already EARNED health care benefits. They already paid their “fair share” by past wage cuts in exchange for other benefits which Obama hopes to expropriate. Our military should not pay more when the lower 50% are getting a free ride, and unionized civilian DOD workers aren’t subject to increased health care premiums. And they won’t this year because it can’t possibly pass Congress just because Obama proposes it.

@ Centrist:
You omit the fact that the cuts are coming because we have had such dramatic increases in the past ten years. The first three years of the Obama administration saw a dramatic increase in Veteran’s spending, especially towards health care. This budget seeks to responsibly cut some of the increase out of it. The same with the defense budget overall. It has increased so much over the last few years that we need to look at ways to make responsible cuts.

Santorum doesn’t have another gig. Newt has been too lazy to put any kind of national organization together. The Texans tried to put a dunce in the mix. Romney has worked for years putting an organization in-place, managed his personal life, governed effective despite a weaker political position, was vetted as all Republican are by running the first time. My prediction: Santorum gets gig on Fox, Newt raises speaking fees for having run, Paul gets to be Surgeon General. Palin, finally divorces and becomes playmate. Oh yeah, Romney wins, senate turns Republican, Israel attack Iran and Arab league sits it out. South Carolina sucedes to Deliverance states of american taking south ga Alabama and Mississippi with them. Everybody is better off.

Good Question Becky, I found this quote from Jeb Bush quite interesting, so I don’t think the Republicans even know anymore…
“I used to be a conservative, and I watch these debates and I’m wondering, I don’t think I’ve changed, but it’s a little troubling sometimes when people are appealing to people’s fears and emotion rather than trying to get them to look over the horizon for a broader perspective, and that’s kind of where we are,” the ex-governor said, according to Fox News.

“If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals–if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.” – Ronald Reagan

If you weren’t scared spitless in the past, you should be now. Of all the jack-booted bills that have had a free pass in the Ga Legislature, HB469 may be the worst violation of your freedom this session. Joining the roll of infamous Republican moves, the right of free assembly has been stomped into the ground — now, it will be a felony for a union to picket an unfair employer, a felony for a private citizen to publicly protest an out of control legislature, an unjust law or act. Gathering together to make yourself heard in opposition to the status quo has always been a perilous business but the Constitution protected us. In Georgia today, that protection is gone. What is going to be next? Free Speech — already under attack, Privacy – almost gone – Unwarrented Search — under attack.
You know, even if you are sitting around pickin your teeth and thinking what a good thing this Bill is for gettin rid of them pesky pinko liberals and gettin them into the jailhouse where they belong, one of these days you may like find yourself on the pointed end of the bayonette, say at your next Tea Party. You’re absolutely right. Newt is definitely a word smith. He knows exactly what to say and when to get the biggest impact. Basically he’s used the social, economic and racially differences of voters to propel himself. That is really the only reason he did so well in SC. Notice he had done jack since then. When you can’t even get on the darn ballot in a lot of places, why even bother? Oh, I forgot “Brain” has got to be front and center. That ego needs stroking on a regular basis. This race brings him out of obscurity. Also helps to fatten his pocket later for speaking engagements. That’s unless he just really ticks people off down the road.

I’m not saying he has or has not. But right now the discussion is about how it has propelled Newt’s candidacy. He hasn’t won since SC–the south. And in one of the most bigoted states in the US. Isn’t that his ONLY win? And he keeps talking about being from GA when he hasn’t lived here in years. But like SC, the state of staying in 48th place goes right along with it. The fact that the Governor and some other top officials would hook their wagon to this limping on 2 legged horse is really telling.

Believe it or not, I actually voted for GWB during his first term. About 3 months into it I regretted that decision. You see, I’m not someone who just votes D or R. I vote based on my my interest.
So that’s one of the reason I voted for President Obama. He ran on improving and focusing on education (one of the reasons I voted for GWB) since we are in a global world. He ran on improving American energy sources and reducing our dependency on foreign oil. He ran on passing a healthcare bill. He ran on being a uniter and President to all Americans (GWB did the same and even bragged about how he had done it in TX another reason I voted for him). He’s intelligent. He has a model family for people to immulate. The fact that he has these qualities and is black too was just a bonus to me.

I believe he, just like other Presidents before him have tried to do what he said. But lets be honest, your side is making it extremely hard for him to get anything done. It’s not like he isn’t trying. He hasn’t abandoned what he wanted to do. But it’s a little hard to do it when you are facing a brick wall everyday. More importantly, like ALL politicians he set goals, things he wanted to do. I told you some of the things GWB said he would do. Shift happens. You have to re-group and sometimes refocus because until you actually get into the job you have no idea that what you want to do may be more difficult because of all of the things that have to be done in order to make it happen.

Funny how both the senators and you and my right-wing nutjob college friend pull the LEAST egregious part of the bill out to quote as if that were even important. The big issue is that this would criminalize protest (which as political speech gets extra PROTECTION, not extra punishment) particularly in connection with labor disputes. And the big story here is that this is an American Legislative Exchange Council boilerplate bill, sponsored by an ALEC member, passed by ALEC members, and with an ALEC lobbyist in attendance…a week and a half after a protest against an ALEC board member started. Corporate corruption of the political process in action. You’re supposed to be a journalist, do your job.

March 1: Early morning Rasmussen Polls show Romney and Obama in a virtual tie since MR’s
two wins (Arizona and Michigan.) RS will not get the women’s vote and hit the panic button & bragged about urging the Democrats to vote for him to throw the election…10 percent did. Folks, what is legal and what is ethical is not always thy same. Newt should win Ga even though not all GOP voters “love” Newt. Ann Romney is in the Atlanta area today..Alpharetta …noon, and in Buckhead at Romney’s Grand Opening Hq at 5:30 PM.

Ann Romney was in Alpharetta at noon today speaking to a capacity crowd. My son-in-law who owns a business very close by spoke with her and got an autograph for me. She will speak in Buckhead at 5:30 PM at the Grand Opening of Romney’s Ga Hq’s Office. Newt is down in Middle Ga today. He needs to outlast RS … Romney is on a LONG journey to the White House. Word has it that RS wants to team up with Newt???? Interesting…
