Your morning jolt: Rick Santorum, Ann Romney headed to Georgia

We know that Newt Gingrich, who avoided the Republican presidential contest in Michigan, will be at the state Capitol this morning.

We know that Gingrich has declared a win in Georgia, which he once represented in Congress, to be crucial to his GOP presidential campaign.

What we didn’t know is whether a win-hungry Rick Santorum, deprived of victory in Michigan by Mitt Romney last night, will put all his eggs in Ohio and seek a post-industrial rematch with Romney. Or might he concentrate on the South?

We’re told this morning that the former Pennsylvania senator, who has a foray into Tennessee today, will be in Dalton at 8 a.m. Thursday for a rally outside City Hall.

Atlanta, GA – Republican Presidential candidate Rick Santorum will visit Georgia tomorrow morning, beginning with a manufacturing plant tour and a Town Hall meeting in Dalton. Santorum will then head toward Atlanta, holding an 11 a.m. rally at the Atlantic Aviation hanger, 240 Airport Road, at Peachtree Dekalb Airport. The event is free and open to the public.

***
We’ve also just gotten word that Ann Romney, wife of Mitt, will be in Georgia for two events on Thursday: A noon appearance at Smokejack Barbecue in Alpharetta, and a 5:30 p.m. appearance for the opening of Romney state headquarters on Maple Street in Buckhead — just down from Newt Gingrich’s headquarters. Both Romney events are open to the public. Take the spousal visit as a sign that her husband isn’t likely to be here before Super Tuesday.

***
And you thought Occupy Atlanta didn’t make much of an impression.

State Capitol police were called to haul a number of protestors out of a Senate Insurance and Labor Committee hearing on SB 469, a measure that – among many other things – would make it a crime to conduct mass picketing at private residences.

From my AJC colleague Kristin Torres:

The bill, drafted by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, passed unanimously through the Senate Insurance and Labor Committee despite nearly an hour of testimony — mostly by union members, advocacy groups and individuals who opposed the bill. Committee members made one change, making it a “high and aggravated” misdemeanor and not a felony for someone convicted of conspiring to commit criminal trespass.

A taste of the language:

A person, or organization that he or she is affiliated with or acting on behalf of, commits an offense when he or she engages in targeted picketing of a private residence that has or intends the effect of interfering with the resident’s right to quiet enjoyment, or when such targeted picketing has or intends the effect of violence or intimidation.

Keep in mind that several condo complexes were within earshot of Occupy Atlanta’s fall camp-out at Five Points in downtown Atlanta.

The measure is sponsored by state Sen. Don Balfour, R-Snellville. Protestors say at least one of their number was arrested and is awaiting a bail hearing. We’ve got a call into the Georgia Building Authority for details.

***
After eight years in the Legislature, state Sen. Greg Goggans, R-Douglas, chairman of the State Insurance and Labor Committee, has decided not to run for re-election, citing the economics of his orthodontic practice in southwest Georgia. From the Blackshear Times:

“This is a very important decision for someone running in the Seventh Senatorial District. It is the largest district in the state covering 4,500 square miles. To serve this district requires a tremendous amount of time away from family and from business. It requires a lot of travel. The expenses are beyond what the $17,000 a year salary covers.

“By announcing my decision now, it will give potential candidates the time to discuss this important decision with their families and to examine their abilities to make it work.”

***
The AJC’s Politifact Georgia this morning challenges GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s assertion that the nation’s unemployment rate is going down because more people are giving up and leaving the workforce.

“We miss you President Bush!”

To bad Bush had to go into self imposed exile. Any chance on getting him to end his exile early so he can hit the campaign trail? Although at this point Obama doesn’t need the help.

Word on the street is shrub hasn’t been sober for a day since he was shown the door. We know he isn’t getting speaking engagement invites. All the wood is chopped, all the brush cleared, nothing else to do. Maybe he will buy another baseball team since that turned out so well last time.

If you weren’t scared spitless in the past, you should be now. Of all the jack-booted bills that have had a free pass in the Ga Legislature, HB469 may be the worst violation of your freedom this session. Joining the roll of infamous Republican moves, the right of free assembly has been stomped into the ground — now, it will be a felony for a union to picket an unfair employer, a felony for a private citizen to publicly protest an out of control legislature, an unjust law or act. Gathering together to make yourself heard in opposition to the status quo has always been a perilous business but the Constitution protected us. In Georgia today, that protection is gone. What is going to be next? Free Speech — already under attack, Privacy – almost gone – Unwarrented Search — under attack.

You know, even if you are sitting around pickin your teeth and thinking what a good thing this Bill is for gettin rid of them pesky pinko liberals and gettin them into the jailhouse where they belong, one of these days you may like find yourself on the pointed end of the bayonette, say at your next Tea Party. Good luck boys and girls and remember — you did it to yourself.

There will be a “State-Wide I.Q. Test” on Super Tuesday. The stated will be exposed to the country as a bunch of idiot bumpkins if it gives Gingrich a victory, resurrecting a campaign that’s on Sheldon Adelson life support.

Yep, the Georgia Republican communists hate the Constitution. The Georgia Republican communists hate freedom, especially the right to protest. Of course the Georgia Republican communists love one party rule. The Georgia Republican communists hate our free press. Our Georgia Republican communist leaders spend a lot of time in China. Our Republican communists love Chinese style environmental policy, none.

I ponder what the clown car occupants will do when the election is over in November.

Romney will buy an island and live there.

Santorum will have to help raise all his children, I guess he will not have to worry with funding their college education. lol

Noot-will be shopping for jewelry everyday but may be at Sams or Costco when the money train is gone.

Paul-will be sitting on his porch smoking a doobie.
