Your morning jolt: A Mitt Romney-Ron Paul alliance against Rick Santorum?

Before he clocked out early this morning, my AJC colleague Daniel Malloy e-mailed a few spin-room notes from last night’s CNN debate of the GOP presidential candidates in Arizona:

– Rick Santorum was on the defensive much of the night, enduring assaults from a well-prepared Mitt Romney and a biting Ron Paul. While expressing regret for his vote for the federal No Child Left Behind law as a senator from Pennsylvania, Santorum in essence accused Romney and Paul of teaming up to take him down. His long-time media strategist John Brabender elaborated later.

“For all I know Mitt Romney might be considering Ron Paul as his running mate,” he said. “Clearly there is some allegiance or alliance between those two and you saw that certainly in the debates.” Here’s a Paul-on-Santorum clip:

There has been anecdotal evidence of a Paul-Romney alliance, proffered here by the most elite of media, the New York Times, but the same argument could be made about Santorum and Gingrich. The former Georgia congressman has reversed course and decided not to campaign in Michigan, where Santorum has a chance to deal the Romney campaign a major blow with a win on Tuesday.

“I thought Newt tonight in many ways backed up Rick Santorum on some cases, and Newt certainly did nothing to go after us,” Brabender said. “And I think a lot of it is, I think there’s a frustration Newt has just like Rick Santorum has that Romney just throws things out there and doesn’t back ‘em up. And you saw tonight that Newt Gingrich hit Romney on that.”

But Brabender said there have been no discussions between the two campaigns.

– Presidential campaigns are huge, traveling bubbles that often shut out the rest of the world. Early this week, InsiderAdvantage produced a poll for Fox 5 Atlanta that showed Georgia as a three-way tie – two weeks before the Super Tuesday vote on March 6.

Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond on Wednesday night claimed ignorance about the survey – and in fact he did not believe the poll was real until this reporter pulled it up on his trusty iPhone.

– When asked to give a one-word description of himself last night, Gingrich answered, “Cheerful.” One could almost – but not quite – hear him add, “Dammit.”

Even so, this was the moment that most appealed to Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who sat next to Callista Gingrich during the debate and emerged – all irony aside — as Gingrich’s chief post-debate spinner.

“I thought that was probably the best line of the night from the standpoint of Newt has been criticized from time to time about being too strident, and I thought his [answer] was completely reflective of who he was tonight and who he is generally as a cheerful warrior,” Perry said. “I thought the reflection of Ronald Reagan where you talked about a happy warrior and tonight you saw Newt Gingrich I think channeling Ronald Reagan by saying the word that described him best was cheerful. He truly is a cheerful warrior.”

In other words, Newt was cheerful. Really cheerful.

Politico.com has latched onto this negative ad that Rick Santorum has quietly launched in Michigan, aimed at favorite son Mitt Romney:

All this talk of a brokered GOP convention in Tampa has Kerwin Swint, a political scientist at Kennesaw State University, wondering if some Republicans have forgotten to take their memory pills:

Republicans hoping for a brokered convention in Tampa this August like to live dangerously. A brokered convention, or even an “open” contested convention, would be just about the worst possible outcome from the 2012 primaries. Why? It is the opposite of what you want heading into a fall campaign against an incumbent president flush with campaign cash.

Swint goes on to list the many messy national conventions, both Republican and Democrat, that haven’t ended well for candidates.

***
The Washington Post has some good news for Paulistas who will be part of the state Libertarian party convention in Athens this weekend:

The national debt is likely to balloon under tax policies championed by three of the four major Republican candidates for president, according to an independent analysis of tax and spending proposals so far offered by the candidates.

The lone exception is Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who would pair a big reduction in tax rates with even bigger cuts in government services, slicing about $2 trillion from future borrowing.

According to the report — set for release Thursday by U.S. Budget Watch, a project of the bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget — former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum and former House speaker Newt Gingrich would do the most damage to the nation’s finances, offering tax and spending policies likely to require trillions of dollars in fresh borrowing.

***
The Republican National Committee this morning has made some hay of that blues concert at the White House, where President Barack Obama displayed his chops:

***
The Newt Gingrich campaign has released its Georgia bus tour itinerary for next week:

On Tuesday:

– 11 a.m. Northwest Georgia Convention Center in Dalton;

– 3 p.m. rally at the Earl Tillman Hanger at Richard Russell Airport in Rome;

– 7 p.m. rally at the HPE Gym on the University of West Georgia campus in Carrollton.

On Wednesday:

– A 9 a.m. visit to the state Capitol in Atlanta;

– 1:30 p.m. rally at Peachtree Academy in Covington;

– 7 p.m. rally at the Gainesville Civic Center.

That last event will feature Gov. Nathan Deal.

***
Over at 11Alive, Jeff Hubbard has an interview with Newt Gingrich, in which the GOP presidential candidate:

A) Declared he wants to meet John McDole, the Google employee in metro Atlanta who this week posted a YouTube video proving that – contrary to Gingrich’s assertions — you can put a gun rack in a Chevy Volt.

B) Approved of drug-testing for welfare recipients;

And C) said that he has enjoyed gigging his interrogators during the GOP debates. “I’m always in tension with the moderator who asks small questions, and I want to give answers that are kind of big,” he said.

***
State Rep. Stephanie Stuckey Benfield, D-Atlanta, announced on Thursday her plans to become the new executive director of GreenLaw, a Georgia environmental advocacy organization. The 14-year Capitol veteran will not seek re-election this year.

Strange alliances during elections, He said Newt pulled back in Mich. for Rick to embarrass Mitt, and he commented on Newt and Rick teaming up on Mitt,

he said Paul and Mitt both need to keep Rick down,. Paul because of Virginia.

The three top contenders looked very strong last night. Mitt and Rick did a very good job with the Q and A and Newt was the best again by far. All these debates have made the top three very capable to handle Obama in the debates and make him look like the incompetent leader he really is. The future is looking very promising.

Keep up the squabbling GOP! It shows how immature you all are. Totally unfit to lead our country.

Last time I looked, a presidential ticket comprises a President and Vice President team. I believe it is only natural that ‘alliances’ would be formed.

If there was an ‘alliance conspiracy’ out there, I would say it was Newt and Mitt colluding to upstage the other candidates by never letting them speak.

Saw the replay (certainly not on CNN) of Gingrich giving his big answer to yet another small baited question from John King. You’d think King would be tired of having his a$$ publicly kicked all over those national debate stages. Even Romney put it to him when he interrupted his answer. King must be jealous of gross Stepanopolous (guessing at that spelling) bias.

When your job requires that you stay on a PC 24/7 and monitor networks then you can flash back and forth to monitor a blog.

You too can have this type of ability. It will only take you attending the right school, getting the right degree, starting you own company, building your client base and working hard for only 15 years to get to the point where your labors start to give you a few perks.

If the candidates reach their convention with no one having the required number of delegates, it could very well look like a Clint Eastwood western before it’s over. Keep in mind, this is a party of gun nuts, who feel everyone has not just the right but the obligation to bring a gun to every function from a kindergarten recital to a church service. Combine that thinking with the party elites wheeling and dealing in their ’smoke-filled rooms,’ aided by sara palin’s exhortations to ‘reload,’ and the tea baggers’ rants about the tree of liberty needing the blood of patriots, and I can see this dystopic, deranged assembly turning into the OK Corral at some point, when supporters of a particular candidate feel they’ve been robbed. My prediction, the 2012 repub convention will make Chicago 1968 look like an afternoon tea.

His nasty ad of a look alike Romney chasing him with a machine gun was back on today; also, the one holding his “special needs” child.. Newt did well and seemed to be enjoying the RS/MR exchange that got heated up several times. This debate should help Romney gain Arizona & Michigan delegates…also on 6 March, IMO.

Although I am a Newt supporter, the polls suggest that Rick is getting a great deal of support because people think he is a man of conviction and not a typical politician that will tell you what you want to here. Polls also suggest that Gas prices and the contraceptive fight with the Catholics are hurting Obama at the moment.

These polls will change another 100 times before the election and like I have said it is way to early to predict a winner because there are way to many variables in play but they do tell me that this race is going to be very close.

Ron Paul shut down that audience pretty quick with the economic facts on Iran. Soviets left other countries when they were bankrupt.
Why did you say he is a fake?

Santorum said “I was wrong. I took one for the team” when voting for no child left behind/prescription drug plan, etc. I ask: What team? The unfunded big government spending team? Get that clown off the stage.

Dr. Paul turned in one of his best performances tonight.

Newt lied again about balancing the budget in the 90s. All he did was steal from social security. debt still went up a trillion dollars under his time.

Romney is in dreamland if he thinks he is going to balance the budget WHILE expanding military 100k troops and more aircraft carriers/submarines.

“Pills can’t be blamed for the morality of our society.” cuts to the truth of the issue.

“Planned parenthood should get nothing”

“There’s always an excuse for these big bills.” responding to santorum making excuses for his votes.
Ron Paul solidly won the battle of ideas on all fronts tonight. Well done, sir.

New Jersey Governor Christie endorsed Romney a while back and made it clear again this AM he is not interested in being a V-P???. He may have aspirations of being picked at the Convention, if it goes that far??? Newt is gearing up for a big weekend in Ga with Gov Deal being at the last event in Gainesville. Last night (Ariz Debate) has given NG a renewed ray of hope. RS is the donkey’s
pick to run against Obama and he continues to get more free press than all of the other candidates combined along with the President who is in Fla today. Perry may still have aspirations as well as Palin, Jeb Bush, Cain & several others. Romney should continue to gain significant delegates, IMO.

Will Ron Paul join Mitt Romney as his GOP running mate? Could be. Or is Santorum just whining. Clearly, Romney is the “safe” choice for republicans. He’s conservative enough to capture mainstream GOP voters, and safe enough for country club republicans. Santorum may be sewing up the far right, but the far right isn’t big enough to capture the nomination or win the general election.

By adding Paul to his side, Romney would bring a whole new demographic to his campaign, the younger, more independent-thinking, socially moderate voter that supports Paul so strongly. For now, it looks like Paul supporters will cast their votes for him no matter what his ultimate chance for capturing the nomination.

But, if Paul’s base see’s an alliance with Romney as the best chance of getting their man to within a heartbeat of the presidency, they might fall in line behind Mitt.

Here’s my FULL take on this: http://goo.gl/D2Nj4

Ron Paul has the second most delegates by now, as confirmed by CNN John King in the interview after the debate! That is why MSM stop showing the delegate count??? There was a outside scene before the debate breaks and all signs show support for Ron Paul and many saying Veto Romney. Why the voice of people got ignored? Why there are so many parasites in our gov. naming them political analyst, like Howard Fineman? Why Donna Brazile was cut off and laughed at by her peers when she said she is with Paul on foreign policy?What is wrong with this country?
How can you not impressed by Ron Paul’s wisdom and consistency.
Ron Paul is our only hope! He will win!

After getting hammered by both Ron Paul and Mitt Romney during the G.O.P. Arizona Debate, Rick Santorum suggested that there is some kind of alliance between the two men.

Santorum’s top strategist John Brabender suggested the two men were “joining forces.”
“Clearly there’s a tag team strategy between Ron Paul and Mitt Romney. For all I know, Mitt Romney might be considering Ron Paul as his running mate. Clearly there is now an alliance between those two and you saw that certainly in the debate.”

Wow! Talk about conspiracy theories! Have these people ever thought that Ron Paul may just think that Mitt Romney isn’t quite the jerk that both Santorum and Gingrich are, and that this may have something to do with it. Also, anyone who has been paying attention to Ron Paul knows that the plan has always been to make this a two-man race between Dr. Paul and Mitt Romney, so it’s not difficult to see why Santorum and Gingrich have to go. Besides, Santorum and Gingrich are both empty vessels with nothing to offer except more BIG GOVERNMENT. This is all about strategy, and anyone who thinks that Dr. Paul and Mitt Romney are anything but respectful of one another will be in for a surprise in a few months when Santorum and Gingrich deflate.

How about all reporters stopping on spectulation and misleading. Instead, shine some light on Fed Reserve and what foreigners say about US current foreign policy?
I bet still many people out there think Fed Reserve is gov. branch instead of bank cartel. I bet still maby people think foreignors love American soldiers to fight for their freedom. I bet still many people don’ t know how gov. bribes us ( wellfare for poor, tax break for mid, subsidaries for rich) and act for the special interest groups.
Stop SPECTULATINGS!

Didn’t Christie say that he didn’t feel he was prepared to be President a while back? Would be kind of hard to except the VP nod with something like that floating out there.

Doug Wead, the senior advisor of Ron Paul campaign rebuffed the so called alliance conspiracy:
http://youtu.be/V9WeqvXy3Ew

It is simply a desperate attempt to smear Paul from those who are scared of Ron Paul’s success. Among those haters of Dr. Paul is Mark Levin.

Ron Paul cannot be a doormat of another candidate. Santorum campaign in CPAC handed out brochures that says Ron Paul supported Tarp, which is totally false. Ron Paul has never voted yes to raise the debt ceiling and bailout.

Romney and Paul are my 2 favorite candidates. Maybe not in that order. I’d be happy to see them running together, if they could work out the kinks.

· Executive Order 11110 was issued by U.S. President John F. Kennedy on June 4, 1963.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was assassinated at 12:30 p.m. Central Standard Time (18:30 UTC) on Friday, November 22, 1963,

On June 4, 1963, a little known attempt was made to strip the Federal Reserve Bank of its power to loan money to the government at interest. On that day President John F. Kennedy signed Executive Order No. 11110 that returned to the U.S. government the power to issue currency, without going through the Federal Reserve. Mr. Kennedy’s order gave the Treasury the power “to issue silver certificates against any silver bullion, silver, or standard silver dollars in the Treasury.” This meant that for every ounce of silver in the U.S. Treasury’s vault, the government could introduce new money into circulation. In all, Kennedy brought nearly $4.3 billion in U.S. notes into circulation. The ramifications of this bill are enormous.
With the stroke of a pen, Mr. Kennedy was on his way to putting the Federal Reserve Bank of New York out of business. If enough of these silver certificats were to come into circulation they would have eliminated the demand for Federal Reserve notes. This is because the silver certificates are backed by silver and the Federal Reserve notes are not backed by anything. Executive Order 11110 could have prevented the national debt from reaching its current level, because it would have given the government the ability to repay its debt without going to the Federal Reserve and being charged interest in order to create the new money. Executive Order 11110 gave the U.S. the ability to create its own money backed by silver.
After Mr. Kennedy was assassinated just five months later, no more silver certificates were issued.

Santorum is a lame getting suckerd into the contraceptive debate.
It’s all lip service. If you are truly PRO LIFE, then what you need to do is repeal Roe vs. Wade. Ron Paul would give that authority back to the states to decide, that would repeal Roe vs. Wade immediately.
The federal government unconstitutionally over extending its authority would be over.
The United States Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade would be considered an unconstitutional delegation of power over the States and therefore repealed. (NO JURISDICTION)
This whole argument over contraceptives is really quite annoying and misses the biggest issue of PRO LIFE. Let your own State decide on the right to life issue, because you will never reverse the Roe vs. Wade decision in the United States Supreme Court. All these issues should be decided on the state level, not the federal level.

I made this correlation many weeks ago in a post on another site. It basically stated why is it Paul and Romney never attack each other? Especially since one is supposedly the “most moderate/liberal” of the GOP contenders and the other the supposed “most conservative”. Then I went on to say that they are more alike than you think. Now everyone else is starting to see it.
