Federal 2013 budget includes another $2.8 million for Port of Savannah dredging

Before they get too worked up over President Barack Obama’s budget for 2013, Republicans might want to take note of these two paragraphs from a press release issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer:

The budget contains $2.8 million in the Investigations Appropriation for the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP). The funding will further the harbor deepening pre-construction engineering and environmental analyses leading to a “Record of Decision,” which completes the Corps’ approval process.

(Last week, the expansion project also received $2.5 million in federal funding following the release of the Corps’ Headquarters work plan for fiscal year 2012 appropriations to the Army Civil Works program.)

I don’t know what Obama is in his private life. Many people including all politicans have skeltons in the closet. However, I know only one thing we are building and improving roads all over the world and we can lose our cars in a pothole in America. The first time Savannah loses trade because the harbor is not dredged the mayor of Savannah will be screaming holy murder to his Congressman. If we want to cut the budget time to slash the military budget in half freeze federal spending, and stay out of other countries affairs.

The last figures I saw indicate that the dredging will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $500-$600M. The State of Georgia would need to provide about half of that amount. The Port of Savannah is absolutely critical to the economic future of the entire state. Corrupt Governor Sonny Perdue wanted the dredging completed by 2012 to coincide with the widening of the Panama Canal. Obviously thats not going to happen. The appalling lack of leadership in this state will come back to haunt us very soon on this issue.

The current Governor and Legislature has put some money in the budget for the state’s portion of the dregding, but we are nowhere close to the amount required. The Obama administration is tossing in a paltry $2.8 M and the “aginners” like td are already crying about the deficit, socialism, and the end of the civilized world. Gimme a break. There is no way the State of Georgia can pay to dredge the Savannah River. The Federal Government has jurisdiction over navigatable waters.

I’m wondering where all of these “No Government”, Tea Party extremeists are going to be when there are no jobs, no infrastructure, no quality of life because we refuse to make the investment of tax dollars into thingsthat will sustain a great world class economy. I personally don’t want to see the USA become a Third World country, but that is exactly where to ‘No Government/Tea Party” extremists are taking us.

I agree, I want this gumment to keep my taxes low and not spend anything. We’ve built all the roads I need, so don’t tax me to build anymore for someone else. I got my education already, so don’t go taxing me to educate somebody else, or build those fancy new schools with new-fangled compooters and all. I don’t live near any rivers, so don’t go repairing any bridges on my dime, or building any more of them. Cut out all this spending, except of course my medicaid, my social security. And just because I’m not paying taxes doesn’t mean I am going to stand for cops and firefighters taking more than 10 minutes to get here when/if I call them, or that I’ll stand for having pot holes line my street, and don’t think we need to stop spending on all those new hot shot air planes, tanks, armored vehicles, and weapons, just because I don’t want to pay taxes. Bombing third world nations is activity vital to the health of our economy, so I guess me and my tea party brethren will reluctantly put up a few dollars in taxes for that, but it by god better not go for any of those sissy-ass veterans benefits to treat so-called PTSD for the malingerers. If I hadn’t had this trick knee, I would have been a soldier and I wouldn’ta had no PTSD. Grover Norqueerst RULES!!!!

Let’s waste a couple of billion in Savannah.

The amount of additional freight Savannah Harbor can expect – 0 Tons.
The amount of additional revenue the State of GA will receive – 0 Dollars
The number of additional ships that will be arriving in Savannah 0 Ships
The number of SuperPanamax ships that can be accommodated at high tide – All of them
The number of SuperPanamax ships that will probably go to Charleston or VA anyway – Most of them.

This is a huge waste of taxpayer funds to line a few special pockets. There will be no net jobs, no net freight increase and no additional State revenue.

Yet another reason not to let the CofC get into State Policy.

No, Lib, I’m as white as they come. But I have no problem whatsoever acknowledging a black guy (or, for that matter, somebody of ANY color) doing a pretty fair job under stunningly difficult circumstances. I don’t think for a second any of the four Republicans running can come even close to matching the job he’s doing. I know you disagree. And that’s just fine. I guess we’ll just cancel out each other’s vote….and I’m okay with that.

Unbelievable that a vital infrastructure project like that is still on hold and we’re ratholing $85 million on a useless downtown Atlanta trolley no one wants.
