Georgia Right to Life spurns Mitt Romney, endorses Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum

Georgia Right to Life today spurned Mitt Romney and Ron Paul, and endorsed Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum in the GOP presidential contest.

GRTL, the most active anti-abortion group in the state, insists that candidates oppose abortion in all cases except when the life of the mother is in jeopardy. The group does not recognize exceptions for rape or incest.

Romney and Paul endorse those latter two exceptions, the group said. From the press release:

“Both Speaker Gingrich and Senator Santorum have clearly demonstrated their commitment to protecting all human life,” explained Melanie Crozier, Director of GRTL’s Political Action Committee. “As a result, we feel strongly that either candidate deserves the support of Georgia’s prolife voters,” she added.

Stressing the need for voters to be informed, GRTL President Dan Becker said, “It’s not just about who can win. It’s time for prolifers to quit voting based on polls and start voting on principle. These are the only two candidates in the race that support the prolife position without exception and without compromise.”

Becker noted that both Gingrich and Santorum have signed the “Personhood Pledge.” In it, they agree to support a personhood amendment to the U.S. and state constitutions.

Such an amendment would guarantee a constitutional right to life for every human being, from the moment of conception until natural death.

In addition, Becker pointed out that both candidates oppose all forms of human embryonic stem cell research.

The organization did not endorse Governor Mitt Romney or Congressman Ron Paul because of their compromise on life issues.

Referring to Romney and Paul, Crozier said “Governor Romney still supports abortion in the case of rape and incest, and Congressman Paul recently indicated in certain cases, he does as well.”

***
Meanwhile, a statewide poll of Republicans released this morning says the presidential contest in Georgia has become a competitive race for second place:

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who represented a Georgia district in Congress, leads the field with 35%. Santorum has moved to second place with 26% in Georgia in the wake of his resounding “hat trick” series of three wins this week in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado.

Mitt Romney measured in at 16 percent, and Ron Paul registered 5 percent. The automated poll of 1,475 voters was conducted on Thursday. More from the press release:

“Gingrich leads, and the fight seems for now to have become a battle for second place,” said Mark Rountree, President of Landmark Communications, Inc. “The race remains volatile.”

From their website grtl.org:

Q. Congressman Paul signed your Personhood pledge. Why aren’t you supporting him too?

A. In a recent CNN interview, Congressman Paul indicated he approves of abortion in certain cases. He was specifically asked “You have two daughters. You have many granddaughters. If one of them was raped –?” He replied ” . . .that individual should go immediately to the emergency room. I would give them a shot of estrogen . . . ” As an OB-GYN he knows that medically the purpose of this shot is to raise the estrogen levels to the point that the newly formed child will NOT implant in her mother’s uterus thereby promoting spontaneous abortion. Georgia ER Dr. Spencer Price says, “There is only one reason an emergency physician would give an injection of estrogen to a woman in an emergency setting – to elevate her circulating estrogen levels above physiological levels. . . As a result, the fertilized ovum is more likely to pass through the uterus and be eliminated.”

Q. Mitt Romney supports abortion in cases of rape and incest. Why don’t you support abortion in rape and incest cases?

A. Such abortions create a second victim: the child. It is the perpetrator who should be punished to the full extent of the law . . . not the innocent party. Killing the baby does nothing to remove the pain of the original assault. Studies show that years later a majority of women regret the killing of their child more than the violent rape. The right thing to do is keep the baby, or make it available to the thousands of couples eager to adopt. In cases involving incest, studies show that it is nearly always the perpetrator who pays for the young girls abortion, thereby guaranteeing continuous access to the girl. Most child protection agencies don’t recommend abortion in cases of incest because it hides the crime from the other family members who become the girl’s best hope of ongoing protection.

I agree with Mitt on this one. I’m still not sure why this continues to be the litmus test for conservativism. I am willing to bet, a small amount and not $10K like Mitt, that GRTL folks would not bring a child to full term if the mother was raped or in a case of incest.

Just because someone has not been convicted Dusty doesn’t mean they are not a crook. Dig into Mr. Deal and you will not like what you find if you support honesty and politicians who are serving for the people and not themselves. Mr. Deals background is full of shady arrangements to profit himself and his friends at taxpayer expense. But Georgians let Sonny Purdue do it even bigger while he was in office, so I’m guess that kind of stuff really doesn’t matter to people in Georgia as long as he has an (r) next to his name.

Perhaps our open-minded Jim Galloway will tell us how many “groups” there are in Georgia who endorse candidates. I think there are quite a few and all making decisions based on their own agenda.. We pick and choose those we want to get “upset” about. Our newspaper folks see to it that we get upset over the correct (political) ones.

Fortunately, a few people have minds of their own and make sincere thoughtful choices, even apolitical ones.. Let’s hope they all get out and vote. Otherwise!!!!!

Glad to hear you are a Democrat. Not surprised, either. You take rumors and failed efforts as the “gospel” truth. You don’t know the meaning of the word “Convictions’.

Obviously you believe any decision by a business man/politician is bound to be crooked. Profit to you means the “evil rich” because you are not rich. Wise business decisions are only made by “government” (when Democrats are in the majority).

Too bad you did not get the gene for an “open mind”. That does not mean “hole in the head”. Just thoughtful.

Exceeding the speed limit is a crime. That you were not stopped and fined, makes you no less guilty of breaking the law.

But to you point, absent a conviction, the man is not a criminal in the eyes of the law.

Dusty,

Once upon a time there was an ethics watchdog as part of a certain state’s government. The problem was that the group had the audacity to take their jobs seriously enough that they dared start looking into some of the dealings of the Governor. So what did that Governor do, you may ask. Well that Governor decided to take the high road and let the ethics watchdog do their job without interference and let the chips fall where they fell. His hands off approach didn’t work out so well as the Governor was involved in some shady dealings involving his taxes and a bankruptcy with his child and her husband that seemed a little fishy to some. It hurt, yes, but he did the right thing because after all, he was taking money from the wallets of his people for salary.

Our Governor was faced with a situation similar to the fairy tale above, But what did he do. He simply eliminated the positions of the ethics watchdog citing “budget cuts” and made the investigation into him and all of the potential problems it may have brought when we found out what was really going on go away. Poof, like no one ever asked any questions at all.

If that’s not crooked then crooked is a bigger fairy tale than the one above.
Wake up. An R after a name doesn’t make that person any better than any other letter.

Good Grief

It would do no good to REPORT the dealings of the Governor. A person who controls the investigation and can fire the investigators when they start asking the “wrong” questions has placed themselves above the law.

I am anti-abortion and support GTRLs no exception for rape or incest, as logically those exceptions make no sense whatsoever unless you accept infanticide for the same conditions.

I do not support their narrow definition of a fetus being viable at conception or opposition to embryonic stem cells. The fact that RON PAUL is not anti-abortion enough for them speaks volumes. He like me is morally opposed to abortion, but politically he also understands that this is a STATE issue constitutionally, and supports the overturn of Roe v. Wade, UNDERSTANDING that abortion will continue to be legal in all states that choose not to outlaw it.

I believe that regardless of what religion you practice, there is always a moral obligation. I think some people in certain walks of faith tend to publicly discuss their feelings. Some Christians probably have some of the same concerns about abortion and birth control they just tend to allow God to be God and remain quiet. I have met many women who have had abortions and some come from the same religious groups that are in the news now. I honestly feel that the issue is between God and the individuals. There are so many concerns in the world now that I’m concerned about… like the housing market, the rich not paying their fair share and the middle taking all the hits…. I’m not saying that people are wrong to disagree. I just think that if you truly love God then it should show in how you address your feelings and concerns… It looks bad when you try to defend your religious beliefs and then used such awful words in your defense. Remember God is kind and love….

I’m a business owner for seventeen years and deal with the government every week. I’m tired of the government wasting my money on hairbrained social policies that don’t work, and will never work. Cut my damn taxes and I’ll hire more people, it’s as simple as that. If someone gets a government check, they should pee in a cup before getting anything. I’m tired of supporting generation after generation of people who have no plan to get off the government check and on to their own checks.

Your taxes were cut, how many more people did you hire?

Truth is, even if small businesses had their taxes cut to 0% they would only be able to hire 1 or 2 more employees. You, JSH, like every non wealthy conservative overestimate to cost of the taxes you pay…and, stringing along the thought process, you overestimate what you would be able to do with those tax dollars you “save.”
