Karen Handel, the former GOP candidate for governor, just announced her resignation as a senior vice president for public policy of Susan G. Komen for the Cure – one week after the breast cancer charity reversed itself on a decision to sever financial ties with Planned Parenthood.
Below is the letter. Note that Handel says she is declining the offer of a severance package from Komen — which might have required her to keep silent.
February 7, 2012
The Honorable Nancy Brinker
CEO, Susan G. Komen for the Cure VIA EMAIL
5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250
Dallas, Texas 75244
Dear Ambassador Brinker:
Susan G. Komen for the Cure has been the recognized leader for more 30 years in the fight against breast cancer here in the US – and increasingly around the world.
As you know, I have always kept Komen’s mission and the women we serve as my highest priority – as they have been for the entire organization, the Komen Affiliates, our many supporters and donors, and the entire community of breast cancer survivors. I have carried out my responsibilities faithfully and in line with the Board’s objectives and the direction provided by you and Liz.
We can all agree that this is a challenging and deeply unsettling situation for all involved in the fight against breast cancer. However, Komen’s decision to change its granting strategy and exit the controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood and its grants was fully vetted by every appropriate level within the organization. At the November Board meeting, the Board received a detailed review of the new model and related criteria. As you will recall, the Board specifically discussed various issues, including the need to protect our mission by ensuring we were not distracted or negatively affected by any other organization’s real or perceived challenges. No objections were made to moving forward.
I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it. I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen’s future and the women we serve. However, the decision to update our granting model was made before I joined Komen, and the controversy related to Planned Parenthood has long been a concern to the organization. Neither the decision nor the changes themselves were based on anyone’s political beliefs or ideology. Rather, both were based on Komen’s mission and how to better serve women, as well as a realization of the need to distance Komen from controversy. I believe that Komen, like any other nonprofit organization, has the right and the responsibility to set criteria and highest standards for how and to whom it grants.
What was a thoughtful and thoroughly reviewed decision – one that would have indeed enabled Komen to deliver even greater community impact – has unfortunately been turned into something about politics. This is entirely untrue. This development should sadden us all greatly.
Just as Komen’s best interests and the fight against breast cancer have always been foremost in every aspect of my work, so too are these my priorities in coming to the decision to resign effective immediately. While I appreciate your raising a possible severance package, I respectfully decline. It is my most sincere hope that Komen is allowed to now refocus its attention and energies on its mission.
Sincerely,
- By Jim Galloway, Political Insider

She has been a disaster for this organization. I was in Walmart on Sunday and I can’t tell how many products I saw with the Komen Pink Ribbon on it.I made sure the groceries I bought didn’t support this organization with the ribbon on it, and the stuff I used to buy that had it on it I bought its competition. I was standing in line and they had this Energizer battery kiosk where you could buy while in line, and they had actual pink batteries with the KOMEN ribbon on them and I bought DURACELL just so I didn’t support Energizer. Guess Komen has been hounded by its sponsors to get rid of that cancer Karen b/c their products are being affected. I know personally my whole family was boycotting any food/products that had a pink ribbon it. That ribbon has become toxic and they have a lot of work to do to regain the trust of women all around the world. Cancer should not be used a political football to deny any women screening. Cancer is NONPARTISAN and it doesn’t care what political affliation you belong to and for this woman to destroy a 30 year positive organzition for breast cancer, because of her right wing ideology has been a travesty.

The truth is ALL there is in this story. They decided to withhold funding from Planned Parenthood!
They screwed up and got caught in a lie, as they continued to fund PENN STATE as it was definitely under a CRIMINAL investigation.

This debacle puts Komen in a very harsh light. We always knew that Handel was anti-abortion; this situation reinforces that.
But what exactly is Komen’s position? First they want to disassociate themselves from PP because of investigations. Then they bow to political pressure and change their minds.
Handel, at least, doesn’t waffle in her views.

What an incredible piece of spin. How can women be your highest priority when you alter the rules for grantmaking specifically in an effort to avoid a controversy created by your political allies? There are plenty of controversial groups that Komen works with, including Penn State (criminal investigations), several corporations who produce products with known carcinogens, guns, etc. It is alos rather disingenuous to say that Komen turned the issues into something political. Karen Handel arrived with a well-known political history and by insid accounts, was key to the charge forward. Ms. Handel, if you don’t want to have an abortion, don’t have one. We can agree to disagree on the topic, but, like when you created an illegal system for voter verification in Georgia (known to make it more difficult for people to vote), you should stop using your power to deny people access to ful participation in decisions that affect their lives. You are absolutely invested in a government big enough to control m mothers, sisters, and daughters and that is by no means true or healthy conservatism.

MN Planned Parenthood does not use the money they raise and receive for cancer research.
They DO use it to do mammograms and cancer screenings for women who are without health insurance or access to health care. That is where the money donated goes!
SGK donates money to thousands of other organizations. They just stepped on their dick this time and got caught acting political instead of philanthropical!

I can’t believe that SGK would succumb to such media pressure to support an organization that promotes saving women’s lives out of one side of their mouth but promotes killing babies out the other side. What most people fail to point out is that for every $ SGK gives to PP, that’s one more $ they can allocate towards abortions from other sources. I applaud KH for her stand and even though my wife is currently battling BC, I will not support an organiztion that supports abortion. I do not support United Way for the very same reason.

Now, since Komen saw the light of their mistake, she runs off crying like a baby because they don’t agree with her anymore. Get a grip Handel, you couldn’t possibly believe that what you say has anything to do with the health of ALL women, and has everything to do with your political agenda. I hope Ms. Handel has finally learned the lesson she failed to learn two years ago. What do you get when you do the bidding of the GOBIC (good ol’ boys in charge), who seek to control all the power, money, and women within their realm to preserve their own privileged way of life — at the expense of those who really need a strong, capable advocate? Did you really think they would back you up when things got ugly, Ms. H? Bless your heart!

The question of SGK organization that I have is, “being under investigation”..determines termination of donations…isn’t it innocent until proven guilty…..especially being investigated by CONGRESS (LOL) when the investigation hasn’t been completed. If you actually followed what has been going on some of your comments might be worth reading. Whether or not you are for Planned Parenthood seems to be what is driving the comments. SGK was
founded to fight breast cancer. Why would they expand to help PP, the poor, Haiti, or the fight against drug abuse ? They were fortunate in having what one would think was an uncontroversial cause and they should be marshalling their efforts to work on that cause ALONE. Only a few know what went on in Board Meetings but I Itend to believe Handel since no one is disputing her take on it.

Well, its about time that someone stands up with integrity. I think that she was so polite in turning down the severance pay. It was BLOOD money anyway. And for all you that think I’m out of touch. Sorry to disappoint you. My neice died of breast cancer at age 30, left a husband, two girls 10 & 8 and her doctor contributed the spreading of her cancer to the type of birth control she was on. So do you homework and get educated and stop spreading your Lies to Women.!!!

I’m amazed at the political tone deafness of Handel, the board at Komen for the Cure, and the right wing in general. Komen changed the way it handed out grants for the sole reason of ridding itself of one of the largest providers of women’s health care in the world. They did this because of the constant attacks by Catholic and other anti-abortion groups. Komen had done very well in spite of those constant attacks, but that changed when it hired a group of political activists to set it’s policy. It made it’s decision in spite of warnings by the very people who were charged with the nuts and bolts of providing the grants. Some of those people resigned. Komen went forward with it’s new policy.
As proof that Komen had only political intentions, when their ‘moral’ stances cost them money, they changed their moral stance. It was never about morality, it was always about the ’scorched earth’ politics of the right wing and the anti-abortion groups.
Komen for the Cure will be an example used in public relations courses the world over because of the failure of the stewards of Komen which allowed it to become a tool of the anti-abortion forces. They decided to become part of the political sewer instead of staying on mission and providing help in the fight against breast cancer.
The people who pushed Komen to take sides in the abortion debate are also after the Girl Scouts of America. They lie and distort to demonize anything Planned Parenthood does. We shouldn’t place our trust in liars, regardless of how much they insist they are doing some god’s work.

The Truth from the National Cancer Institute. No significant risk factor in using birth control.
How do oral contraceptives affect breast cancer risk?
A woman’s risk of developing breast cancer depends on several factors, some of which are related to her natural hormones. Hormonal factors that increase the risk of breast cancer include conditions that may allow high levels of hormones to persist for long periods of time, such as beginning menstruation at an early age (before age 12), experiencing menopause at a late age (after age 55), having a first child after age 30, and not having children at all.
A 1996 analysis of worldwide epidemiologic data conducted by the Collaborative Group on Hormonal Factors in Breast Cancer found that women who were current or recent users of birth control pills had a slightly elevated risk of developing breast cancer. The risk was highest for women who started using OCs as teenagers. However, 10 or more years after women stopped using OCs, their risk of developing breast cancer returned to the same level as if they had never used birth control pills, regardless of family history of breast cancer, reproductive history, geographic area of residence, ethnic background, differences in study design, dose and type of hormone, or duration of use. In addition, breast cancers diagnosed in women after 10 or more years of not using OCs were less advanced than breast cancers diagnosed in women who had never used OCs. To conduct this analysis, the researchers examined the results of 54 studies. The analysis involved 53,297 women with breast cancer and 100,239 women without breast cancer. More than 200 researchers participated in this combined analysis of their original studies, which represented about 90 percent of the epidemiological studies throughout the world that had investigated the possible relationship between OCs and breast cancer (2).
The findings of the Women’s Contraceptive and Reproductive Experiences (Women’s CARE) study were in contrast to those described above. The Women’s CARE study examined the use of OCs as a risk factor for breast cancer in women ages 35 to 64. Researchers interviewed 4,575 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer between 1994 and 1998, and 4,682 women who did not have breast cancer. Investigators collected detailed information about the participants’ use of OCs, reproductive history, health, and family history. The results, which were published in 2002, indicated that current or former use of OCs did not significantly increase the risk of breast cancer. The findings were similar for white and black women. Factors such as longer periods of use, higher doses of estrogen, initiation of OC use before age 20, and OC use by women with a family history of breast cancer were not associated with an increased risk of the disease (3).

This whole thing was never about breast can cancer because none of the clinics listed had the machines to actually do the screenings. All they did was to refer clients for screenings. This issue was about the fact that PP is a abortion mill. Karen found out her foundation was funneling money to PP to perform abortions and made the money go away and then PP, with the help of NOW and the lib media, made up this BS about breast cancer for the poor would be reduced.

Ms. Handel is the symbolic example of an extremist idealogy that has plagued this country for decades since Roe v. Wade. Along with a fellow board member, they injected politics into their decision to cut funding for low income women. This is the Party more persistent on protecting the fetus than a human being. This is the Party that controls every aspect of the State Capitol and has yet to produce one jobs bill. This is the Party that has Atlanta on the map per Census Bureau as the highest rated city/town in the U.S. for wealth disparity. This has everything to do with continually suppressing the poor to benefit the few, and Georgia has a long history of this oligarchal mentality.

It is astonishing to read the comment from Planned Parenthood supporters. The ignorance portrayed on a daily basis is evidence as to why they would put their reproductive health in the hands of such a deceptive organization. Why anyone supports this organization is proof of organizational conspiracy to decieve the public to put money in their pockets. Planned Parenthood has become a criminal enterprise, participating in a criminal conspiracy – namely, “accessory after the fact” – by covering up statutory rape, pedophilia, child-prostitution, and more. Why are people so blind? Please make sure that the individuals providing you or your loved ones “health care” at a Planned Parenthood clinic is qualified to do so. There are better facilities to entrust with your health and life then Planned Parenthood. Do some research before you take your daughter/s for treatment at any of these cesspools called medical clinics. Not that your daughter needs you to know about who is handling her “reproductive health” when she seeks it without your knowlege. Visit Live Action http://liveaction.org/ and watch the undercover videos. If you care about yourself and your loved one, don’t subject them to the type of care Planned Parenthood serves up. Oh, don’t forget to ask Planned Parenthood for a free lollipop condoms before Valentine Day! I would get a couple and double wrap, cause they are made to fail. For the love of intellegence people, get a clue!

Gotta admire those people who think they know when “life” begins. Science is not sure. Life, by every definition, cannot begin until the organism can support its basic functions on its own, save nutrition. By that definition, 21-22 weeks gestation is about when life begins. So, clearly, a fertilized egg does not mean “life” although it has some features of it. It still needs the womb of the mother to keep it alive.
Better yet, let’s point to the hypocrisy of the evangelical Retardican position on welfare mothers having babies and more babies while receiving government aid. A true conservative would say that should be prevented. No more mouths on the taxpayers’ nickel. Isn’t abortion the most practical, cost-effective way to resolve that? Adoption is not a realistic answer because not everyone would want the child, so he ends up in an orphanage anyway. Such an upbringing encourages delinquency, so by outlawing abortion, we have contributed to the crime problem.
Clearly, anti-abortion people have not read the great book Freakonomics and the section on what is responsible for the relative decrease in crimes 35 years after Roe vs. Wade. I would suggest that anti-abortion pseudo-conservatives read it to get some perspective.
A true conservative wants as few people on the public dole as possible. Then we want to outlaw the public dole, eventually, after all have been properly weened. Anything contrary to that philosophy (like the Retardican anti-abortion message) is not conservative by any means.

I have been a foster parent, so have you?. How many is none of your business. As far as unwanted children, is it more important to be able to protect the right for someone to not be have to be responsible for ones actions at the expense of a death sentence to a human being? That is a sick choice in my opinion.

After reading some of these comments, I just felt like pointing out that whenever Planned Parenthood receives money, it doesn’t just go into one giant account to be used willy nilly wherever PP wants to use it. There are multiple accounts each with their own rules and regulations as to how it can be dispersed. Grants from Komen, for example, were used (at our affiliate) to provide breast cancer screenings and referrals for further breast health care. To get a mammogram down here, you have to be referred. If you do not have a doctor, health insurance, or money to have that initial screening, you cannot simply pick up the phone and set an appointment for a mammogram. The PP affiliate that I worked for utilized the grant money to provide these screenings and referrals to women who would otherwise not be able to afford or access them elsewhere.
As for other monies, donations are earmarked for specific programs. One of those programs was a “reproductive equity fund” which went solely to subsidizing the cost of an abortion for low-income women. A donation that was not earmarked went into the general fund but the general fund did NOT go toward subsidizing abortion costs. To pretend that Komen giving a grant to PP means that PP can use other monies to pay for abortions is incorrect and grossly inaccurate. If PP does not have the funds in its specific accounts for breast screenings/referrals, then it simply cannot provide that service unless the woman can pay it off ahead of time. Likewise if the reproductive equity fund is empty, then the woman must find a way to cover the full cost of her procedure herself. The general fund is not used to provide abortions, nor are monies received from grants that very often have stringent requirements as to how they can be used as well as accountability measures to ensure the money is being utilized as intended.
Basically, PP getting a grant for breast screenings/referrals does not increase the amount of money PP can use to help women subsidize an abortion. It just doesn’t work that way. There are regulations regarding every dollar that comes in and how it can go out again. Only those dollars specifically earmarked to the reproductive equity fund can be used to subsidize abortions and very often, they do not have enough money for the demand. The majority of women who choose an abortion typically end up spending quite a bit out of their own pocket whether they have it or not.

Instead of a heartfelt apology, this comes across as “I’m sorry that you (the public as a whole) have a problem, but…”. I also find it interesting that she feels the need to broadcast that the decision regarding Planned Parenthood was an agreed upon and vetted corporate decision that was made with a flagrant disregard for potential fallout. Let this debacle serve as a lesson to you, Ms. Handel and your (now former) cohorts, weighing “personal opinion” against the greater good will ultimately fail.

In response to MN Jean Komen does not only raise money for “cancer cure research & treatments” they raise for screening, education and awareness as well — Planned parenthood was providing breast cancer screening to those most in need — the poor and uninsured. You make it sound like PP was using the Komen funds for something else– (and we all know what that is) PP provides a continuium of care to some of the most vulnerable women. Yes it includes abortion but alsoincludes clinical breast and gynecological care, family planning and contraception. As a survivor I walked sixty miles and raised a lot of money, but have watched them continue to slap their name on any product just to earn money — often those products are not healthy for women (pink buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken) See http://www.thinkbeforeyoupink.org Don’t get me started on the executive pay –paste this into your browser and get an education: http://ww5.komen.org/uploadedFiles/Content/AboutUs/Financial/KOMEN%20PARENT%20PDC%20wout%20PW.pdf

The most cost effective solution would be voluntary sterilization in return for support. If people would be held accountable for their actions (like paying the state back for supporting their children) then you would see a great deal more responsibility with people.

yogabird,
Well stated. I had problems with SGK before the PP scandal hit. Like, how much does it cost to run radio ads every 15 minutes in morning drive time? Seriously? Their advertising/marketing budget is HUGE, and yet, we’re still getting our tatas slammed between two hard slabs and nearly twisted off just to get a picture that might indicate a lump in there. They’re no closer to identifying the cause of this horrid curse, let alone really curing it. They’re STILL treating it by nearly killing a woman just to kill cancer cells, and women are still dying horrible, painful, long-suffering deaths by the “drugs” they help push on us with a hefty dose of false hope.
Like yeah, the bucket o’ fried chicken is going to help? Geebus, we really have to be stupid to believe that.

Ah, td, voluntary sterilization is not COST-EFFECTIVE. Voluntary sterilization (tubal ligation or partial salpingectomy for the woman) costs approximately $4000, including surgeon and OR costs. Abortion costs about $750. Which do you think the welfare queen is going to get? Be realistic. The good news is that the more abortions the welfare queen gets, the more likely she will make herself sterile because of intrauterine adhesions, a condition known as Asherman’s syndrome.
Lastly, the big hole in your argument comes when the utopia we true conservatives want is finally realized (ie, everyone is self-supporting). If the former welfare queens–now good, productive workers–are in a good position to procreate and want to have another child, your voluntary sterilization program would prevent that and perhaps cause a decline in population and, subsequently, national productivity. National trade deficit. That’s another discussion.

Tom, it doesn’t matter if a donation to SGK results in a direct grant to PP for the purpose of subsidizing abortions…or for supporting their ‘breast screenings and mammograms referrals’. We now know for certain that a contribution to SGK does not mean that the funds will be used “…to find a cure for breast cancer.” There are many other charitable organizations that stay true to their stated mission, without involving groups such as PP in the mix. Lemming? And that coming from an overgrown fetus.

Td,
Do you have even the remotest idea of how a breast cancer screening is done? It begins with the physical exam, which is done at all PP clinics. If warranted, the next step is a referral to an imaging center, where the actual mammogram is done. These are the same steps carried out at every private doctor’s office, too. GYN’s and GP’s don’t have these expensive machines sitting in the back room of their offices. Now, try getting a mammogram done if you don’t have the referral from your doc or PP…or worse, imagine trying to get it done without any insurance.
Several PP clinics (Austin is one) pooled their donations and bought a mobile mammography unit to travel to poor neighborhoods to do mammograms for women who would never have had them any way.
THAT’S what the money is used for. Please learn a few facts before spewing your bull. Otherwise, we will all know that TD stands for Totally Dumb.

JennaSmith – I agree with whet you say.
The problem is that the vast majority (and I mean majority) of Americans do not work for non-profits, nor are they Trustees in local organizations that apply for grant money.
Grant money almost never – and I do mean NEVER – given without a business plan submission, and it is never doled out without oversight from a third party funding agent, or CPA. Furthermore, Grant money is also almost never given to covering general operating expenses. The money almost ALWAYS has to go for a specific project and the funds can never be comingled into operating funds.
If you are a historical society and you need new money for a boiler, you have to prove that the money is a for a boiler, that the boiler was bought, installed and that the funds covered that boiler.
Its no different for PP. Like any other nonprofit, it has to pay qualified staff members, train volunteers and it cannot use grant money to do this unless the money has been allocated in the grant for that purpose. And if an organization misaapropriates grant money, then the grantee can demand a whole or partial return of the amount.
People who don’t get this have no expirience in being a nonprofit employee or volunteer (on a Board). They are simply people who want to believe what they choose to believe and no amount of rational thought is going to change their minds.

Also, to those who want to insist ANY monies going to PP “support abortion”, you need to take an accounting course that deals with “fund accounting”. PP is a not-for-profit which, like government entities, uses fund accounting. The audits of non-profits focus primarily on the integrity of the individual funds and the assurance that fund-specific monies cannot be co-mingled. That will result in an adverse or qualified auditing opinion quicker than anything short of embezzlement.

Lets be honest, Karen was not qualified for the position from the very start. Karen certainly lacked the education, experience, objectivity and leadership for the position of Vice-President of Public Policy of such a prestigeous organization. A qualified Vice-Pressident of Public Policy would have never let such a policy see the light of day. It was a matter of time for this or something like this to happen based on that fact alone. The damage she has inflicted and allowed will forever change the fund raising capability from now on. Fewer donations, fewer participants, fewer volunteers, fewer walkers. Komen has learned a valuable lesson here…political appointees are no longer welcomed. Karen’s decling a serverance package was the least she could do based on the amount of damage inflicted, it was the right thing for her to do. As a matter of fact, it is she that owes Komen for giving her the opportunity that no other organization would ever do.

If its not politics, then why did she resign? Seriously?! Anyone willing to look could see why. Who would want to be a leader in an organization which spent serious time and consideration to redesign their criteria, based on several different considerations, and then it couldn’t even stand by them once some OTHER organization puts its’ POLITICAL pressure on them. SGK has the RIGHT to fund or not fund whomever they choose….or they used to. Obviously, not anymore. Not when a MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR business like planned parenthood decides they don’t like losing ANY of the money they take in.

What does PP have to do with breast cancer the last time I went in to talk with PP they told me that abortion was okay and didn’t mention anything a breast cancer,I’m 40 plus wonder where that money for help with BC screening went?

tardawg, all SGK grants made to PP ove the years have gone solely to breast cancer screenings and education programs in their own facilities and mammogram referrals performed at non-PP facilities but paid for or subsidized by PP.

What does breast cancer have to do with abortion? Everything as studies point to the higher incidence of breast cancer among those who have aborted their children. Why support an organization that provides 25% of the nation’s abortions? Why not support PP with the stipulation that the money will be granted only if they do not provide abortions? People who are so concerned with women’s health fail to realize that a pregnancy is not a hazard to their health, only to their lifestyles. What about the in-utero baby girl who is being killed by PP? So much for her health, huh? Karen was a class act who did well to separate herself from an organization that flip flops and spins like a weathervane to placate those who are anti-life. Our family will NEVER support Komen ever again, in any way, shape or form, even if costs more to buy competing products. So disgusted by them. I hope this is the beginning of the end of them and another more worthwhile organization will step in who truly cares about women, both born and pre-born.

I don’t think some of you fellow bloggers are quite getting it. Karen resigned because she doesn’t want to be associated with an organization that presents itself one way, yet channels donations toward some other organization that has nothing to do with what you intended for your money to go toward!!! Karen would make an outstanding Governor. Her integrity would clean up alot of our city’s corruption. You can’t help it.
How can a soulless mongrel, whose existence pivots on a food bowl and bathroom walks, be expected to see beyond the word, “abortion,” to the pre-birth human being who has been slaughtered with metal tools?
How can a moral eunuch, who has neither integrity nor spiritual acumen, be expected to grasp the desire to remove the shackles of evil from a righteous cause?
You can’t help it.

Christianalltheway,
“I hope this is the beginning of the end of them and another more worthwhile organization will step in who truly cares about women, both born and pre-born.”
You can start by doing what Karen Handel SHOULD have done in the first place: stand up and fight for the weak, poor, sick, and vulnerable in our society, including women who find themselves “in trouble” for any one of the thousand reasons they might be in that condition. Cutting funding for food, medicine, and educational opportunities does NOT qualify as “truly caring” about anyone. Karen Handel realized she could enjoy the spotlight and money of politics if she’d just do the bidding of the elite class of rich white men who use religion as one of their many rationalizations for keeping others down — for NOT being their brother’s keeper, for NOT doing unto others, for NOT caring for the sick, poor, imprisoned, and downtrodden. She trusted and worked for the WRONG people.
You really want to help? Stop judging, put yourself out there, and buy some medicine for a poor single mom whose man up and left her. Then watch her baby for her all day while she finishes school. Make sure the child gets a healthy lunch. Be kind and encourage her without judging (it’s not your place!) Are you ready to do that? If not, then you do your moniker a disservice.

No one ever talks about the reason Ms. Handel was hired in the first place. It certainly was not for her experience as the GA Secretary of State. Her political activism was well known, and she was hired as a lobbyist to represent Komen in Washington. It was clearly a political position, and I can see how she would feel like they are throwing her under the bus now to save face.
Komen’s dishonesty about the political nature of this whole debacle is probably going to be the nail in the coffin for them. I can’t see how they can ever regain trust after showing their true colors. As misguided as she is, at least Ms. Handel was always open about where she stood, and people could made up their own mind about it. Not so in the case of Komen, who tried to keep their agenda hidden. Interesting that Handel has declined a severance package, in light of the fact that Koman spent over $1.9 million on severance to eight high-level employees in 2008-2010, most of whom had short tenures there (http://themoderatevoice.com/137410/komen-severance-bill-estimated-at-1-9-million-for-2008-2010/). Unlike the other executives, Ms. Handel does not appear to be bound by a non-disclosure agreement.

This woman still doesn’t seem to understand that cutting off funding for Planned Parenthood prevents poor women from receiving cancer-prevention care. When she says “the women we serve” she should say “the rich and middle class women we serve”–she cares not a jot for the poor. Like so many conservatives, she seems to believe in the old concept of “the undeserving poor”–as if to say “if you’re poor, it’s your fault–you don’t deserve our support.” I’m glad the Komen organization has been exposed as the elitist, politically-driven organization it is, but I wonder if Susan Komen was an elitist conservative, or if she was just a good-hearted woman who died of breast cancer? If it’s the latter, then I’m very sorry her name has been besmirched by the ill-considered and heartless behavior of these misguided executives.

If Komen’s withdrawing support for PP would have “indeed enabled Komen to deliver even greater community impact” as Handel’s letter stated, they sure did an awful job of explaining how that would have happened before their reversal. Also, it is tremendously easy for Komen to stipulate, as I’m sure they did/are/will, that their support to PP be used ONLY for breast cancer screenings. They can certainly stay away from the more controversial (but still necessary) services that PP offers. Some idiots seem to think the Komen $ would ONLY be used for abortions or -heaven forbid- even birth control! The RW just doesn’t want to offer anything at all to poor women. Glad saner voices have prevailed.

Guess what people, Planned Parenthood is controversial and considered guilty of genocide by millions of people. They also provide minimal cancer screening services, and that money could have gone to other good causes. Moreover, it would have enabled Komen to receive donations from millions of prolifers would want to contribute to breast cancer research but don’t want their money to go to the nation’s largest provider of abortions. KOMEN WAS TRYING TO EXTRICATE ITSELF FROM THE CULTURE WARS, but the ABORTION THUGS ARE WILLING TO HOLD BREAST CANCER VICTIMS HOSTAGE TO THEIR INTERESTS. Shameful. This is clearly the letter of an honorable woman, and it is only too bad that her organization was too spineless to keep the right decision. They will continue to suffer by forgoing much support from people quite willing to give it.

As a Mom who recently saw her child sucking her thumb on a 3 dimentional ultrasound monitor at the end of the 1st trimester of life I am horrified that Koman hands over donations to Planned Parenthood who has dismembered alive over 340,000 unborn kids last year alone, half of them being unborn women who should have a right to their own body. You have to be totally devoid of conscience to mindlessly support Koman at this point who give money to such an organation who does not even do mamagrams. Love PP? I hope you all get what this article is saying. She has resigned because of the Charity reversing its decision to end funding to Planned Parenthood. She believes that the decision to end the funding was the right one and when Komen caved to political pressure and reversed its decision, she feels it was contrary to their Mission and that they went against their own policies and best interest by reinstating the funding to Planned Parenthood. I very much agree with her and I applaud her backbone and her convictions, virtues that are very rare today. God bless her. But apparently, if Komen is going to give up all its integrity to political pressure from those who love abortion, then she wants no part in it. Good for her.
I think those who love abortion should remember that they are only here because they managed to escape it.

Very interesting comment from Handel “…Komen’s decision to change its granting strategy and exit the controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood and its grants was fully vetted by every appropriate level within the organization…” So she is admitting that the granting strategy was indeed changed just so they could “exit the controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood”. This is in direct opposition to the statements made by Komen when the news of the defunding hit the media. Then, the story was in essence…. ‘we changed our funding policy, and now Planned Parenthood doesn’t qualify for our grants! sooo sorry! This has nothing to do politics, or pressure from right wing politics…!
So Karen, were you lying then, or now?

Why is it necessary that Komen provide the grant to PP? Why not some other organization? When you give your money to these organizations, you are giving up the right to decide where it ultimately goes. You’re better off sponsoring an individual – at least 100% of your money is spent on that human. Komen will never recover and that’s probably a good thing.

SHE made it about politics and in turn almost ruined everything the foundation stands for. Her leaving is the best thing that could happen to the Susan G. Komen foundation.
Of course the downside is that she’s going to play the victim roll and milk it for all it’s worth, fooling not so bright republicans into thinking she’s some sort of martyr and use it as a platform for her next escapade.
