Clint Eastwood was against bailouts before he was for them
Clint Eastwood gave us the most striking political ad aired during the Super Bowl. But aside from Chrysler, who benefits from the TV spot? On Monday, Republicans seemed to think President Barack Obama:
“I was, frankly, offended by it,” said Karl Rove on Fox News Monday. “I’m a huge fan of Clint Eastwood, I thought it was an extremely well-done ad, but it is a sign of what happens when you have Chicago-style politics, and the president of the United States and his political minions are, in essence, using our tax dollars to buy corporate advertising.”
Eastwood is 81. But it may still be dangerous to imply that Dirty Harry can be bought off by “Chicago-style” politics or is one of Obama’s minions. And yet, just last November, Eastwood said this to the Los Angeles Times:
“I’ve always been very liberal when it comes to people thinking for themselves,” said Eastwood, who supports gay marriage, abortion rights and environmental protection. “But I’m a big hawk on cutting the deficit. I was against the stimulus thing too. We shouldn’t be bailing out the banks and car companies. If a CEO can’t figure out how to make his company profitable, then he shouldn’t be the CEO.”
When it comes to the current crop of Republican presidential candidates, if Eastwood is enthusiastic about anyone, it’s Herman Cain. “I love Cain’s story,” he says. “He’s a guy who came from nowhere and did well, obviously against heavy odds. He’s a doer and a straight-talker, which I don’t see enough of from either party.”
He’s not as bullish on Mitt Romney. As a film icon, Eastwood has been fiercely protective of his image, but he’s not especially enamored by that attitude in a politician. When Eastwood was in Massachusetts in 2002, filming “Mystic River,” Romney was running for governor there. “I saw a lot of him and you have to admit — he looks like a president,” Eastwood recalled with a tone that you’d have to describe as being slyly sarcastic. “I mean, if you were casting a movie where you needed someone to play president, you’d definitely pick him.”
The Michigan presidential primary, incidentally, is Feb. 28.

Amazingly, Romney now claims this was all his idea. A Romney spokesman told the New York Times, “You have to acknowledge that he (Romney) was advocating for a course of action that eventually the Obama administration adopted.”
Does Romney favor government intervention to save American industries? If so, he’s anathema to Limbaugh’s “dittoheads” and most of the tea party. If not, how can he claim any share of credit for one of Obama’s biggest bragging points?

This Whole Commercial is Off Message – Chrysler is NOT the real American Success Story – the Real Success Story is Ford – they did not take a bail-out and still turned a mighty profit. I think that is the Message – not whose idea it was to give away tax dollars. BTW I drive a Chrysler (bought it in 2006 because we buy American – and before the bail-out); my husband drives Fords.

President Obama is an absolute hero. He saved this country and certainly Detroit too. He implements Christian and biblical principles and gets little credit for it. I invite folks to read the book of Proverbs before heading into the new testament and reading Jesus’s thoughts on the poor and downtrodden too. President Obama has faced more complex challenges in three years than any other president in my lifetime. The closest to him would be President Truman in the difficult days after the death of President Roosevelt and the end of World War II with the beginning of the Cold War. Wise up America, especially citizens of Georgia. You have a remarkable president and a true blessing to this country. President Obama faces criticism with a kind spirit. He deserves the support of this nation.

I liked the commercial. Chrysler obviously wanted to capitalize on last year’s acclaimed “Big Game” Detroit comeback spot with Marshall Mathers. The message this time was perhaps more powerful, but I would have loved to see it presented by all three of the Big Three, and not just the foreign-owned Chrysler.
Half time in America, with down-and-out Detroit ready to kick some symbolic butt. I’d like to see that be a reality, but the White House and the UAW will finger that pie too much and prevent that from happening. That unfortunately won’t make Dirty Harry’s day.

Good, positive commercial. We need some self confidence and a culture change where Americans want to roll up their sleeves and go to work building back value.
It doesn’t matter that the message was about a flawed, foreign owned company that got government bailouts along with their executives and union goodies. That is too deep for the average viewer to understand – but they probably felt the patriotic message, and that is good enough.

Chrysler sells Detroit once once again. Last year with a young white rap star and this year with a movie icon. I found the prior Eminem commercial to be far more compelling than the current Eastwood spin. Still I find 3 facts remain.

At whom exactly was this ad directed? Surely not the American people because there is nothing WE can do about this economy. We want jobs, pure and simple.
I would hope the ad was directed at Congress, as they are the ones who are partly responsible for businesses and other rich employers going overseas in order to escape the outrageous U.S. corporate tax laws, which are second only to Japan as the highest in the world.

This was a television commercial (obscenely expensive advertisement that is completely transparent to taxation) during a professional sports contest (that wouldn’t occur without exemption from anti-trust laws and confiscation of taxpayer funds to build stadia around the country).

So what’s the rest of the story, Boortz? Well … I’m going to tell you! The fact is that there is a lot more to the unemployment rate that meets the eye. So here are some inconvenient facts about our unemployment situation.
•First .. .did you realize that up until the Obama administration the Labor Department largely depended on state governments for each state’s specific employment statistics? Obama decided that this function should be removed from the states and centralized under his administrative guidance. Now here’s a guy who went from “jobs created” to “jobs created or saved” as he tried to convince the American people that his stimulus plan was working … and now he finds it necessary to put the responsibility of developing unemployment figures in the White House?
•In January, 1.2 million people dropped out of the labor force in one month! This is the largest absolute jump in ‘Persons Not In Labor Force’ on record…and biggest percentage jump in 30 years. (Zero Hedge). If these people, or a significant portion of them, were in the workforce without jobs the unemployment figure would be higher than 8.3%. So now you’re left with having to figure out whether or not you believe this many people actually said “the hell with it” in one month. Many experts are quite skeptical about this figure.
•The report Friday said 12.8 million people remained unemployed – 43% of them for more than six months – and that another 8.2 million part-time workers couldn’t find full-time employment. (LA Times)
•With the latest job gains, total payrolls in the nation stand about 5.6 million less than at the start of the recession in late 2007. (LA Times) Our population is growing month by month … yet we now have 5.6 million fewer jobs? Does this sound like a successful presidency?
•If the size of the U.S. labor force as a share of the total population – people with jobs and people trying to find jobs — was the same as it was when Barack Obama took office—65.7 percent then vs. 63.7 percent today—the U-3 unemployment rate would be 11.0 percent . (James Pethokoukis)
Just to put that in perspective, this means that since Obama too office, approximately 4.7 million people are no longer being counted towards the unemployment rate.
•But let’s not go all the way back to January 2009. In January 2011, the unemployment rate was 9.1 percent with a participation rate of 64.2 percent. If that were the participation rate today, the unemployment rate would be 8.9 percent, instead of 8.3 percent. As an analysis from Hamilton Place Strategies concludes, “Most of the shift of the past year is due not to the improvement in the labor market, but the continued drop in participation in the labor force.” (James Pethokoukis)
•Then there’s the broader, U-6 measure of unemployment which includes the discouraged plus part-timers who wish they had full time work. That unemployment rate is still a sky-high 15.1 percent. (James Pethokoukis)
So if you add up the number of people who are actually unemployed in the ObamaEconomy (12.7 million), the 4.7 million who have given up and dropped out of the labor force and then those who are underemployed, can’t find full-time work (10.5 million) …this means that there are about 28 million working age adults who can’t find work in the ObamaEconomy.
Like I said, don’t depend on the ObamaMedia to report these facts. But the fact is that Obama’s “success” is built upon the struggles of Americans who have given up or frustrated in the current economy.

GM cut a great add for the Obama Campaign. Romeny opposed the auto bailout, and will loose Michigan by at least 5 in the General election, even though his father was Governor of the state. He will of course try to change his position again, but it won’t work. The pessimism coming from his new stump speech is astounding. Negative messages have never won in Presidential elections and I seriously doubt that this election will be any different.

It is sad that Clint considers himself a libertarian but would do this kind of socialist promotion for the failed auto industry of Detroit. Every penny the auto industry has received, whether the first Chrysler loan or the current theft of GM stock to the benefit of the UAW and the bailouts, was all STOLEN from the productive sector of society. Detroit is dead because of union power, protectionist tarrifs against foreign competition, dozens of rounds of steel tarrifs and a whole host of government policies over the past 5 decades.

The Federal Reserve and the banking cartel they support, the criminals in Washinton on both sides of the aisle, the unconstitutional supreme court and their constitution-destroying decisions, and the war criminals that have occupied the white house for at least the past 10 administrations are all part of the destruction of America.

Chrysler (and GM) are in the situation they’re in because they spend too much money on marketing and not enough money on R&D to make the product better. This high-dollar ad just reinforces my point. We need to quit pouring taxpayer money into stupid stuff like this.

You obviously were born way after 11-22-1963, no one wants to revisit that experience again. Regardless of one’s politics, when Kennedy died it was a national tragedy. Thanksgiving might have well been cancelled, Christmas was just plain sad, and everyday felt like nuculear winter, and that’s just the perspective of an 11 year old.

I don’t think it’s in favor of Obama. He makes no indication of it having ANYTHING to do with government. That said, he’s also a rightwinger. Eastwood put his support behind McCain in the last election, as well as openly voiced his support for all (i believe) republican candidates for decades, including Nixon. Why now would he suddenly flip flop?

Clint is my favorite actor but I will blame the lack of Patriotism and support for Obama on old age. And even though there are more yankees down here than when Sherman came through there are still enough people from here that love America that will vote for Newt in March. When the Constitution was written, the idea that the Armed Forces of the United States (which didn’t exist when the Constitution was written) would be used to settle a family feud (”you will remember, he tried to kill my daddy) would have probably been considered grounds for Treason.

It is nearly half time in America and if there are enough idiots to reelect Obama then America loses the second half and the game. I could see Obama getting a couple thousand votes from his cronies but more than that is unrealistic. He was elected by racists and ignorant whites and if he is reelected it will be by don’t care racists and stupid whites. If you are stupid enough to let jim fool you twice then there is no hope for this country. We are going downhill like a snowball headed for hell as the saying goes. Anyone defending Obama needs immediate brain surgery. If you disagree then go ahead and make the doctor’s appointment before the election.
