Newt Gingrich this morning tossed the kitchen sink — no doubt properly cleaned and blessed — at Mitt Romney down in Florida. From Politico.com:
“He eliminated serving kosher food for elderly Jewish residents under Medicare,” Gingrich said. “I did not know this, it just came out yesterday. The more we dig in, I understand why George Soros in Europe yesterday said it makes no difference if it’s Romney or Obama, we can live with either one.
The source of Gingrich’s information was this Friday report in the New York Post:
Mitt Romney is getting heat for a 2003 veto he cast as governor of Massachusetts to reject $600,000 in additional funds for poor Jewish nursing-home residents to get kosher meals.
At the time, Romney said he nixed the funding of about $5 per day because it “unnecessarily” would lead to an “increased rate for nursing facilities” — even as kosher nursing homes were complaining that state-funding-formula changes could force them to close their kitchens.
“I was outraged,” Jeffrey Goldshine, the retired CEO of a company that operated a kosher facility in Massachusetts, told The Post yesterday….
Romney’s spokesman defended his opposition, saying the state was in crisis and the kosher funding veto was needed to head off higher reimbursement rates for Medicaid.

You guys keep firing off about the price of a gallon of gas so here is a chart (adjusted for inflation) just to add some perspective. (Note these are annual averages and do not reflect monthly spikes or lows – such as the May-Jun 2008 spike to over $4/gallon)
Inflation Adjusted Gasoline Prices
Year Price
1958 $2.32
1968 $2.18
1978 $2.22
1988 $1.81
1998 $1.39
2008 $3.34
2011 $3.51

Not sure what your refining comparison was meant to illustrate, but US refinery capacity has been pretty steady for the last 20 years, from a high of 18M bbl/day to about 17.4M bbl/day now.
The US consumes over 20M bbl/day so we must purchase refining capacity from elsewhere.

@UGA 1999 — I’m not sure how the POTUS drives gas prices up.
Did he shut down refineries that supply the east coast of the US? The paper said several refineries have shut down, some permanently because they were unprofitable and others temporarily causing a spike in gas prices.
Just how does the POTUS cause the fluxuation in gas prices. I thought that was market driven and as such affected negatively by the uncertainty in Greece, Europe and other hot spots around the world.

What I can infer from emo’s post regarding Keystone goes to crude supply. And I think he was referring to the fact that the majority of what comes down the proposed pipeline would be shipped out of the US. Great for Canada and the tanker lines, but of little benefit to the US.
The price of gas is notoriously fickle and tightly aligned to projected supply and demand, political tensions in OPEC nations, weather and probably whether or not the King of Saudi Arabia is getting enough nookie. The US can control the price using 3 mechanisms:
Demand – if we consume less than is supplied, prices will drop
Taxes – we pay federal and state taxes of about 13 percent
More cost efficient refinery practices – refining and marketing costs are about 14 percent of what we pay.
We can indirectly affect the price if the value of the dollar goes in international trading goes up but the overall effect is pretty nominal with respect to pump prices.

This is typical right wing BS. First of all unemployment is not over 10% and won’t be in November.
Gas prices @ 4$ also is irrelevant to the President’s re-election.
Throw as many lies as you can UGA, just like your boys Newt and Mitt.

Mark….right wing BS???? True unemployment is over 10%. Actually in some states it is closer to 15%.
Gas prices are VERY irrelevant to re-election. Research history.
None are lies. Did you see the earlier video I posted of Obama’s campaign speech from 2008? Now WHO is the liar!

Newt Gingrich threatened Monday to skip any debate as the Republican nominee versus President Obama that’s moderated by a member of the media.
“As your nominee, I will not accept debates in the fall in which the reporters are the moderators,” Gingrich said at a rally in Pensacola. “We don’t need to have a second Obama person at the debate.”
Newt doesn’t have to worry about reporters moderating the fall debates because he’ll be watching from the audience.

UGA let me entertain you since this is what you truly desire. For your information, my life is better and my finances are also, because I know how to manage finances. I don’t live beyond my means nor to I make purchases based on impulse. Now although everyone may not be in this same situation, I do have compassion for those who are truly struggling.

@Mark: unemployment may not be at 10%, but it is too doggone close to it, gas is inching it’s way to $4/gallon, and you made no rebuttal to the 15trillion in debt this country is in.
Your boy Barack gave it the good old college try, but he’s failed, and though I am not thrilled with any Republican cabdidate, Barack does not deserve four more years.
We all spend responsibly and manage our budgets and don’t live above our means like you, because we can’t forecast the future, and see where we will be down the road. That’s just common sense.

Chris Christie. “It offends me that Newt Gingrich would attack the character of Mitt Romney.” Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty called the attacks “over the line.” Gingrich is scum.
