So I’m reading SB 312, the bill sponsored by state Sens. William Ligon, R-Brunswick; John Albers, R-Roswell; Buddy Carter, R-Pooler; and President pro tem Tommie Williams, R-Lyons, to require that food stamp recipients do something in exchange for the assistance they receive.
The first passage that strikes the eye is this:
(a) In order to be eligible for food stamps, an applicant shall engage in personal growth activities, which may include, but not be limited to, working toward a general educational development (GED) diploma, if not a high school graduate; pursuing technical education; attending self-development classes; and enrolling in an adult literacy class.
“Personal growth activities” is an intriguing phrase, open to broad interpretation. Likewise “self-development classes.”

So, if you are poor and need assistance you need to spend money on self-improvement to get food stamps?
Will the next, “Get tough on the poor,” move be indigent medical care will require buying vitamins?

Jim,
I was thinking the same thing. They need assistance, so where in the h@ll are they going to get the money for the “self-improvement” classes. Secondly, do these idiots not realize that the people who get assistance cross all economic and educational classes? And finally, what limits are we going to put on corporate welfare? The welfare that hasn’t been producing the number of jobs that it could.

Military members and their families are using more food stamps than in previous years – redeeming them last year at nearly twice the civilian rate, according to Defense Commissary Agency figures.
The agency reports that more than $31 million worth of food stamps were used at commissaries nationwide in 2008 – an increase of about $6.2 million, or more than 25 percent –
Well what kind of personal growth should they seek?

Our IGNORANCE is going to make Georgia the poorest state in the Nation. We are already the regional leader in the southern “diabetes belt” .The SNAP program, commonly known as foodstamps is a federally funded program nutrition program. State legislators can reject, limit and choose to make it impossible for the working poor to receive help. It will not stop the program on the national level. It just means the allocation for Georgia will be given to another state to help feed and benefit their citizens while impoverished Georgians struggle even more.

Does he realize that the food stamp program is governed by federal regulations and not state? While the state does have a little administrative latitude, it is pretty much the federal rules. Even if the bill passed, it couldn’t be implemented.

You seem to forget that the state does not have to accept any Federal programs. If the bill is passed and the DOA does not accept the Georgia rules then the state can opt out of the program. Just go around and Google eligibility requirements in different states and you will see that states have a great deal of room to establish their own rules.

My sister was laid off in 2010 from a $50,000 + job. She has a master’s degree. Her ex-huband was laid off in 2009 and has not paid child support in over 19 months because of it. he left the state to avoid being sent to jail. She currently works as a photo tech at a CVS so her 3 kids can have health care insurance – for less then her unemployment check, but not healthcare – would be if she stayed in the program while looking for a job. She moved in with me since she can’t afford rent if she wants to keep the car and insurance. She has been on food stamps for 6 months. So what do you think her ‘respondsibility’ to ‘get off government assistance’ should be?

And you still don’t know who you’re referring to or why they are on the system. As has already been pointed out many on what you call “generational welfare” are people with disabilities and seniors. And don’t forget, according to Ole Newt he forced welfare reform on a Democratic president that automatically limits how long you can be on “welfare” so there are obvious some specific exceptions that allow people to be on longer. One thing, we need to define what “welfare” is because it’s not what it used to be.

How can a Senior on SS be considered generational? If a senior has almost any SS then they are only eligable for $20 per month. No big deal.
The SNAP program was not part of Newt’s “Welfare Reform” and therefore does not have a lifetime limit. (only TANF or better known as a welfare check).
As far as people with disabilities, why can these people not go out and attend a class to help themselves? If the person is truly disabled then they receive SSI and as such fall into the category as the seniors and only receive a very limited amount of benefits.
Now let us talk about all these men (babies daddy all races) who are unmarried and living in the home but that the government does not count their income because mom states no man is living in her home and the DFCS office is REQUIRED to take the mothers statement as verification. Or how about the illegal woman coming into the office and stating that the daddy of the children in back in Mexico or Panama or where ever but keeps adding additional US children every year to her case and she is the name on the FS benefits.
Now lets see you libs come on and defend these who BTW are the vast majority of the clients receiving FS.

I have to wonder why our State Senators are so keenly focused — in our worst economic era in eight decades, when poverty and hunger rates are climbing in every segment of Georgia’s population (particularly among the most vulnerable and helpless) — not on building the economy and creating jobs, but rather, on KICKING PEOPLE OFF the assistance that helps them survive.
I mean, I understand that doing this ensures them the votes of the self-stroking, sanctimonious citizens who think that greed is a virtue and Jesus hates it when poor people get food for which they didn’t put in ten hours of hard labor with no bathroom breaks, but… surely that’s not the entire voting populace! Worse Housing (check)
More debt (check)
Cut the military (check)
Increased tensions with Israel (check)
Sided with Castro and Chevez (check)

I think they should also be assigned a case worker that will help them to find employment so that they can get off of the food stamp program. With 9% unemployment there are jobs out there.

This is just a dumb ass question? How about the employed at the poverty level? How about those making minimum wage who have no other alternative? Not all people on food stamps are unemployed. This is exactly what the Republican establishment wants everyone to believe.

As long as African Americans have “integration” as a philosophy of life, authentic personal growth is literally impossible. But don’t get me wrong, I understand… The personal growth that the vast majority of people refer to is equivalent to all of Larry Flint’s prostitutes on the outside being honorable, literate, clean, healthy, sociable, progressive, presentable, and trustworthy, as opposed to common street prostitutes on the inside being dishonorable, illiterate, unclean, unhealthy, antisocial, regressive, not presentable, and bald faced liars.
It is literally impossible for integrationist African Americans to experience authentic personal growth as long as they allow their pimps i.e. integrationist African American leaders and their devilish black minions, via integration, to use the vast majority of them as prostitutes, common street hustlers or professionals in every area of people activity.

I like the mentality that Americans had 50 years ago. In many respects, they were exactly like African Americans i.e. when African Americans were not integrationist.
If American companies had left the United States to locate in other countries thereby depriving Americans of jobs and the American Way of Life, they wouldn’t allow those companies to ever return to the United States.
But fifty years later, Obama said in the State of the Union address that American companies were returning to the United States to do business, and many Americans practically shouted for joy.
I’m sorry but I prefer the attitude of Americans and African Americans of 50 years ago as opposed to the milk- toast attitudes of the ones we have today.
Amen?

However, most adult literacy/GED classes are FREE.
I’d like to see EVERYONE getting governmental help have to do volunteer work–cleaning roads, etc. That includes those who get a tax break on their home ownership, of course.

EVERYONE catlady? Really? What about my 45-year old patient who is paralyzed due to multiple sclerosis? She supplements her meager SSI with food stamps and gets aide assistance from the state for baths and things. What volunteer work would she do when she is not being treated for UTIs and muscle spasms?
Or what about the 85-year old widow who worked all her life but simply outlived her savings? Now the lazy goldbrick has the audacity to get heating assistance and Medicaid in addition to her Medicare. I guess she should be able to do something if she can remember with the dementia and all….
The ignorance of the people on this blog and in the legislature about poor people is astounding.
Personal growth? To the Republican state legislators I say: “You first”.

Until then, just GROW UP and stop acting like a child. You would think that after all this time, you would act like an adult. Perhaps, you’ve been a REDNECK too long and you need to leave the south to become educated about the human condition.

I think Sens. William Ligon, R-Brunswick; John Albers, R-Roswell; Buddy Carter, R-Pooler; and President pro tem Tommie Williams, R-Lyons should be tested for drugs. As a matter of fact, I think ALL representatives in the state house should be tested for drugs. That way, WE THE PEOPLE, CAN REPLACE THEM AND CHANGE THE REDNECK STATE OF GEORGIA INTO A TRUE STATE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THEY ARE STILL KNOWN AS A CONFEDERATE STATE JUST LIKE SC, FIGHTING THE CIVIL WAR THAT WAS OVER 147 YEARS AGO.
