So I’m reading SB 312, the bill sponsored by state Sens. William Ligon, R-Brunswick; John Albers, R-Roswell; Buddy Carter, R-Pooler; and President pro tem Tommie Williams, R-Lyons, to require that food stamp recipients do something in exchange for the assistance they receive.
The first passage that strikes the eye is this:
(a) In order to be eligible for food stamps, an applicant shall engage in personal growth activities, which may include, but not be limited to, working toward a general educational development (GED) diploma, if not a high school graduate; pursuing technical education; attending self-development classes; and enrolling in an adult literacy class.
“Personal growth activities” is an intriguing phrase, open to broad interpretation. Likewise “self-development classes.”

dw…No one is wanting to take food away from poor folks. We just feel they should prove they are not drug users. Is that so bad?

I’m totally not against taking food stamps away from anyone that needs them. I just believe they need to pee in the cup before they receive them. No big deal if your clean. Huge deal if your not.

I think they should also be assigned a case worker that will help them to find employment so that they can get off of the food stamp program. With 9% unemployment there are jobs out there.

That has nothing to do with this article! The requirement was for poor people to pay for classes with money they dont have to get the food stamps.

This is just a dumb ass question? How about the employed at the poverty level? How about those making minimum wage who have no other alternative? Not all people on food stamps are unemployed. This is exactly what the Republican establishment wants everyone to believe.

Mark….FYI just because you can think of a minimal rebuttal does not make it a “dumbass” question. AGAIN you did not answer the question. So what about the ones that are not employed.

As long as African Americans have “integration” as a philosophy of life, authentic personal growth is literally impossible. But don’t get me wrong, I understand… The personal growth that the vast majority of people refer to is equivalent to all of Larry Flint’s prostitutes on the outside being honorable, literate, clean, healthy, sociable, progressive, presentable, and trustworthy, as opposed to common street prostitutes on the inside being dishonorable, illiterate, unclean, unhealthy, antisocial, regressive, not presentable, and bald faced liars.
It is literally impossible for integrationist African Americans to experience authentic personal growth as long as they allow their pimps i.e. integrationist African American leaders and their devilish black minions, via integration, to use the vast majority of them as prostitutes, common street hustlers or professionals in every area of people activity.
Amen?

I like the mentality that Americans had 50 years ago. In many respects, they were exactly like African Americans i.e. when African Americans were not integrationist.
If American companies had left the United States to locate in other countries thereby depriving Americans of jobs and the American Way of Life, they wouldn’t allow those companies to ever return to the United States.
But fifty years later, Obama said in the State of the Union address that American companies were returning to the United States to do business, and many Americans practically shouted for joy.
I’m sorry but I prefer the attitude of Americans and African Americans of 50 years ago as opposed to the milk- toast attitudes of the ones we have today.
Amen?

However, most adult literacy/GED classes are FREE.
I’d like to see EVERYONE getting governmental help have to do volunteer work–cleaning roads, etc. That includes those who get a tax break on their home ownership, of course.

EVERYONE catlady? Really? What about my 45-year old patient who is paralyzed due to multiple sclerosis? She supplements her meager SSI with food stamps and gets aide assistance from the state for baths and things. What volunteer work would she do when she is not being treated for UTIs and muscle spasms?
Or what about the 85-year old widow who worked all her life but simply outlived her savings? Now the lazy goldbrick has the audacity to get heating assistance and Medicaid in addition to her Medicare. I guess she should be able to do something if she can remember with the dementia and all….
The ignorance of the people on this blog and in the legislature about poor people is astounding.
Personal growth? To the Republican state legislators I say: “You first”.

UGA 1999, Let me suggest that you go and watch the Star Trek TOS episode, Let that be your Last Battlefield. When you are done, please report back to me. There’s a lesson to be learn and I think it will help you do it.
Until then, just GROW UP and stop acting like a child. You would think that after all this time, you would act like an adult. Perhaps, you’ve been a REDNECK too long and you need to leave the south to become educated about the human condition.

I think Sens. William Ligon, R-Brunswick; John Albers, R-Roswell; Buddy Carter, R-Pooler; and President pro tem Tommie Williams, R-Lyons should be tested for drugs. As a matter of fact, I think ALL representatives in the state house should be tested for drugs. That way, WE THE PEOPLE, CAN REPLACE THEM AND CHANGE THE REDNECK STATE OF GEORGIA INTO A TRUE STATE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THEY ARE STILL KNOWN AS A CONFEDERATE STATE JUST LIKE SC, FIGHTING THE CIVIL WAR THAT WAS OVER 147 YEARS AGO.
