Barack Obama’s tarmac confrontation with Arizona’s governor

President Barack Obama’s tarmac confrontation with Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer,on hand to welcome him to her state, was one of those overlooked bits of news on Wednesday. From the Associated Press:

The two leaders could be seen engaged in an intense conversation at the base of Air Force One’s steps. Both could be seen smiling, but speaking at the same time.

Asked moments later what the conversation was about, Brewer, a Republican, said, “He was a little disturbed about my book.”

Brewer recently published a book, “Scorpions for Breakfast,” something of a memoir of her years growing up, and defends her signing of Arizona’s controversial law cracking down on illegal immigrants, which Obama opposes.

Obama was objecting to Brewer’s description of a meeting he and Brewer had at the White House, where she described Obama as lecturing her. In an interview in November Brewer described two tense meetings. The first took place before his commencement address at Arizona State University. “He did blow me off at ASU,” she said in the television interview in November.

She also described meeting the president at the White House in 2010 to talk about immigration. “I felt a little bit like I was being lectured to, and I was a little kid in a classroom, if you will, and he was this wise professor and I was this little kid, and this little kid knows what the problem is and I felt minimized to say the least.”

On the tarmac Wednesday, Brewer handed Obama an envelope with a handwritten invitation to return to Arizona to meet her for lunch and to join her for a visit to the border.

“I said to him, you know, I have always respected the office of the president and that the book is what the book is,” she told reporters Wednesday. She said Obama complained that she described him as not treating her cordially.

“I said that I was sorry that he felt that way. Anyway, we’re glad he’s here, and we’ll regroup.”

A White House official said Brewer handed Obama a letter and said she was inviting him to meet with her. The official said Obama told her he would be glad to meet with her again. The official said Obama did note that after their last meeting, which the official described as a cordial discussion in the Oval Office, the governor inaccurately described the meeting in her book. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe a private conversation between the president and the governor.

For one who has “scorpions for breakfast,” she seems a might bit sensitive.

The Obama administration is suing the Governor’s state because she and the legislature are trying to protect their border with Mexico against ILLEGAL immigrants.

If Ms. Brewer doesn’t understand Federal > State all those scorpion breakfasts rotted her brain. Maybe a little Raisin Bran instead might make her feel less, um, ready to explode.

You might want to READ the Constitution of the United States.

At one point, the two seemed to be talking at the same time, seemingly over each other. Mr. Obama appeared to walk away from Ms. Brewer while she was still talking.

But when the Feds FAIL to uphold the LAWS that are already on the BOOKS, the STATES have every right to enforce their own LAWS. If Obama would get behind our existing law instead of pandering to the Latinos for the sake of his re-election, Arizona wouldn’t have to spend their own tax dollars on this ever pressing problem. I have family in southern AZ…whatever law enforcement needs to do to curb this problem, then they need to do it. You might feel differently if you lived south of Phoenix…

I’m not sure why she wants to meet with him anyways, he’s a do nothing president and a meeting would be a total waste of time.

You might want to READ the Constitution of the United States.

You might want to read the Articles of Confederation, which were tossed aside because individual states acting like fiefdoms didn’t cut the mustard. Or the entire history of the Civil War, where finger pointing by Governors didn’t end well for them.

You also might want to check that caps lock key, it seems to kick in on random words.

Gov. Jan Brewer is a hero. If the federal govt can’t, or won’t enforce the boarders, it’s time for the States to take back their rightful place in the pecking order. The 10th Amendment means something. President Obama is naive, in over his head, and (to quote a previous poster) the real hater in this situation.
Anybody but Obama 12. Let’s take our country back.

So do all the amendments both before and after the 10th. To focus on one is to miss the point of the entire document.

Dawgdad,

Before you call people out and tell them they might want to READ the Constitution perhaps you should consider READING it yourself.

I’ll help you get started by pointing you to this clause:

Article VI, Clause 2, aka The Supremacy Clause: “This Constitution and the laws of the United States…shall be the supreme law of the land…anything in the constitutions or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding.”

Also take a gander at Pennsylvania vs Nelson 350 U.S. 497 (1956) where Justice Warren, quoting Justice Holmes (two pretty good legal minds), said “the federal interest is so dominant that the federal system [must] be assumed to preclude enforcement of state laws on the same subject.”

zgoldatl,

You might want to add those to your reading list as well. The 10th amendment does nothing to abrogate the Supremacy Clause.

No. obama is incompetent and that has nothing to do with the color of his skin. It has to do with his complete lack of leadership ability. If you can’t tell, he is lying (this incident verifies Brewer’s story from her book). He thinks he knows it all so he doesn’t have to listen to what any of the “little people” have to say.

Eric Holder is also a complete joke. Any self respecting person in his position would have resigned a long time ago.

zgoldatl,,,,,,,,where did your country go?

The idealized country that these people yearn for can be found on TCM, TV Land, or Starz. They want an America where minorities know their places, don’t talk back, and can’t express themselves via the ballot. In this fictionalized America, the president is always white, his servants are always black, and the wise patron always knows what’s best for the ignorant masses. The reality is that, that America is being buried, one bigot, one myth purveyor, one divider at a time, at grave sites from sea to shining sea.

Steve,

Enforcement of those laws is not a factor in determining if a state law is preempted by a federal law. It is the mere existence of the law that matters.

While I must admit that I agree with your statement personally, legally the Supremacy law governs matters such as this.

Well one thing is very clear,Americans are mad as hell and hate illegal mexican aliens that could care less about being here illegally. Our country is corrupt because of illegal mexican aliens and their anchors. Obama should be tried and exiled. Read what the Constitution says about working against the United States of America. Obama would be getting off easy if exiled out of the country.

Hide- I respect your stance, but who is better for this country? Newt?

From the left I would have rather seen Hillary. (I am from IL, so this will be the fourth time I didn’t vote for obama.)

Newt obviously has alot of baggage. I’d like to think he’s getting wiser in his old age and has learned something from his mistakes. He admits he should have been fired for breaking the Contract with America.

Romney I have questions about as well (romneycare, WTF). Santorum I really don’t know enough about and Ron Paul has some serious issues. He does have some good ideas, but he’s too much of a loose cannon.

There are better people out there who didn’t run, but at this point it’s the lesser of two evils. obama is not a leader and I just can’t deal with that. With his lack of experience, and unwillingness to leader (communitee organzer is behind the scenes, not the leader) he could have made a great vice president.
