The latest Florida hit on Newt Gingrich: He wasn’t Ronald Reagan’s vice president

Restore Our Future, the Mitt Romney-allied super PAC, now has this video up in Florida:

Here’s the full citation from the Reagan Diaries for Jan. 3, 1983, as noted by the website Capcy:

“Met with a group of young Repub. Congressmen. Newt Gingrich has a proposal for freezing the budget at the 1983 level. It’s a tempting idea except that it would cripple our defense program. And if we make an exception on that every special interest group will be asking for the same.”

You’ll note that the Restore Our Future ad doesn’t acknowledge Reagan’s use of the word “tempting.”

It’s at the heart of the issue when the tea party gang shout less government. OK, start cutting. But no one wants to cut their favorite program. I guess that’s why we are at this point, almost 30 years later.

Count on Obama & Biden to drop “W”’s name a lot during the campaign to remind voters of what happens when to elect a Republican fatcat to the presidency. W gave us Iraq, Katrina, the Great Recession, TARP, and huge budget deficits.

Note to the GOP: No thanks, not again.

The House minority leader’s name is frequently used as an attack line against Gingrich on the campaign trail, with rivals blasting the former speaker for pairing up with Pelosi in a 2008 commercial urging the country to “take action” on climate change.

Gingrich has repeatedly described the commercial as “the dumbest” move he’s made in recent years.

This is evidence that this dude will and flip flop and lie whenever it’s convenient for him. What a loser!

It does not matter if it is Newt, Mitt, Rick or Ron. The election in November is going to be all about Obama. If unemployment is above 8% and gas prices (as predicted) are over $4 per gallon then Obama will not be re elected. If gas prices are below $3 per gallon and unemployment is below 8% then Obama will have a second term.

Ideas, obviously you did not read the excellent analysis in the “New York Times” Bush policies added more than $5 trillion to the deficit, while the Obama to date only $1.4 trillion. More importantly, the expenditures associated with the Bush policies are of compounding nature, while half of those from the Obama-initiated policies (i.e. Stimulus spending) was one-time. Apparently you are only considering how much the deficit has increased in the past three years, without taking into account the compounding from prior policies.

from time to time me and the POTUS don’t see eye-to-eye and last night was one of those times. I’m not feeling warm and fuzzy about creating more government as he proposed. I’m not at all tickled at the idea of having a task force to tell me who the bad actors were behind the mortgage fraud. Dodd and Franks are gone, their checks have cleared so what’s the point? It was a money grab for everyone including Newt. Too little, too late. also, I don’t like the idea that banks will have to pay a fee that will go towards paying down the bailout. everyone knows that fee will be passed to the borrower at closing. he needs to grow a pair and lead.

Furthermore, you support Newt, you support Illegal immigration and amnesty for them.I have given up on a job search,I dont believe the economy will improve anytime soon. I do believe the illegal immigration being allowed in this country is one of the main causes for the situation we, as a country, are in. Most people have no idea what they are doing to this country and the cost’s associated with them being here. They are stealing us blind.

I am with DannyX…the economy would have to be to the point where everyone owns a ski mask and a gun before Newt obtains office. As Santorum said, the guy is all over the place. He’s an idea per minute. We need the POTUS to settle down, stop with the add this committee and that committee campaign rhetoric and find some common ground with the repubs in the house and senate and get this train moving. Both sides are capable of doing at least that much.

Like I said before...

January 25th, 2012

wally…they are not stealing us blind. Our laxed policies with Mexico and S. America are an issue. When the housing starts were going like crazy they supplied this country with a cheap source of labor no one said a word. All we got during the Bush era was he and Vincente Fox yucking it up in Texas. The housing bubble burst and then the labor became a problem. America has never gotten a handle on what to do after it is done using up it’s cheap source of labor. We’ve seen this before.

If Newt wants to win converts, he should cool it on the Reagan references. Many of us potential swing voters trace some of our current problems back AT LEAST that far. Plus, Reagan at least seemed to have the temperment and self-control of an adult – two qualties that are lacking in Sir Newt.

He has my vote. Did the research and the house fine of 300k is totally bogus. He was fined for not cooperating and wasting the committees time even though he was cleared of any ethic violations. He did not break and rules or laws by placing the class he was teaching at KSU on public TV for peopel to watch since the deamand for seating was more than the school could handle. How is the committee not fined for wasting his time if he was found to have done nothing wrong criminaly or ethically. It is not like he had 600k cash in his fridge or avoided his tax requirements on rental properties like a few of our favorite dems in the house. I could care less about his marrige habbits. His mistake is falling for women attracted to his power. These are not going to be healthy relationships. However, cheating on your wife did not seem to keep Clinton from taking credit for welfare reform, balanced budgets, 4% unemployment, and a period of significant prosperity for most Americans even though most historians will give the credit to the 94 republican revolution lead by Newt. If Freddy and Fanny want to pay Newt for his opinion and advice I have no problem with that. I am surprised Barney Frank allowed them to do it as the ultamite protector of Fanny and Freddy.

really Reagan’s right hand man and responsible for “everything”???….I think not. He has no dignity,
no shame, no class, and no money and counting on what the casino owners/gamblers will continue to give him…He and his “lady in red” will go over like a blocked punt over the long haul.

I certainly don’t want a president with no empathy (there is a reason why people look at past history of cruelty to animals when looking for people with no empathy suspected of crimes – and putting your dog kennel on the roof of your car for a 12 hour drive and still not understanding why it might be wrong – makes it hard to trust). If One has no empathy is he going to worry about sending young men he does not know off the war as Commander in Chief? Newt might have had to pay the costs of the investigation against him (it was no fine) when he pled guilty to the ethics charges – but animal cruelty of that level in New England was probably a felony.

And when you defend your business experience which had the side effect of laying off thousands of people with “I was a businessman, I was looking out for the investors” well Scrooge from “A Christmas Carol” said much the same thing – and I daresay those qualities show a lot of empathy either.

Wrong. If you remember, it was Newt who was at the forefront of the impeachment posse for President Clinton, while at the same time he was in the midst of his own extramarital affair with the potential first ‘ho, Calista. It is and always has been about the hypocrisy of the old blowhard. Newtie also forced the shut down of the government in ‘94, (how’d that work out for him). I think John King posed a valid question when he asked Gingrich about his wife’s allegations that he wanted an “open marriage”. This goes to the very heart of the question of character and morals concerning the Speaker. Think about this people: If you leave one wife when she has cancer and then a second wife when she has MS, does this not go the heart of “pattern” in that this man tends to leave when the going gets rough? Unemployment is the “cancer” of our economy today! Foreclosure has the crippling effects of MS on the housing market! How long before Mr. Speaker turns tail and runs because, like with his former wives, he can’t handle it…or maybe he just doesn’t want to handle it! I’m inclined to believe the NY paper, the Daily News when it stated that Newt has 100 ideas, 97 of them are great but the other 3 would blow up the world! This man has not the character, morals and certainly not the patience to run the country because his mouth is going to get us in perilous situations.

I totally agree with you! The audience is not really needed in the first place. Most people who watch are interested in the debate between the candidates not the audience cheering.
