Today’s Marietta Daily Journal carries evidence that the GOP will yet have a debate over presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney’s faith, quoting state Rep. Judy Manning of Cobb County, a Newt Gingrich supporter:
“I think Mitt Romney is a nice man, but I’m afraid of his Mormon faith,” Manning said. “It’s better than a Muslim. Of course, every time you look at the TV these days you find an ad on there telling us how normal they are. So why do they have to put ads on the TV just to convince us that they’re normal if they are normal? … If the Mormon faith adhered to a past philosophy of pluralism, multi-wives, that doesn’t follow the Christian faith of one man and one woman, and that concerns me.”

Manning seems to be reading from a very old textbook. The LDS has prohibited multiple marriages for over 100 years.
And Eli, you are correct, it takes quite a bit of chutzpah to make the statement that being a Christian is better than being a Mormon which of course is better than being a Muslim.
I gotta wonder where Jews and Buddhists come in the ranking order in her feeble little mind?

Comments like that from a legislator make me ashamed to be from Georgia. If she ever picked up a Bible and read it, she would know that Judeo-Christian roots embraced a tradition of having multiple wives, which really had nothing to do with religion, but more with the culture. Considering she is a legislator, she should really try picking up these things we call books and educating herself. I hate the idea of such a narrow-minded, self-righteous, so-called Christian making laws that affect me.

I can hear the question in the general election, “Mr Romney, is it true that you follow Mormon beliefs which teach that you will one day – if you live your life good enough – you will become a god of another world?”
If he answers that question honestly, how many votes will that sway?
So lets see…
- Mormons believe in multiple Gods for other worlds, Christianity does not
- Mormons believe Jesus was created, Christianity does not
- Mormons believe in multiple heavens, Christianity does not
- Mormons believe everyone (regardless of religion) goes to one of the heavenly kingdoms, except those who leave the Mormon faith. They are cast into “outer darkness”.
- Mormons believe in baptism for the dead, Christianity does not.
- Mormons believe humans (of the Mormon faith) can become gods for other worlds, Christianity does not
- Mormons believe the god of earth was once a man who became god, Christianity does not
- Mormons believe god must have a wife in order to become a god, Christianity does not
- Mormons believe all humans existed prior to life on earth, Christianity does not
- Mormons believe Jesus and Lucifer are spirit-brothers, Christianity teaches that Jesus created Satan
- Mormons believe Jesus should not receive the same worship as God the Father, Christianity teaches Jesus should receive the same worship as the Father.
- Mormons teach that god curses certain individuals with dark skin, Christianity does not
- Mormons teach the Bible is incomplete for faith, Christianity teaches the Bible is reliable
There are many differences between Mormonism teaches and what Christianity teaches. And some of these beliefs will probably cause issues with even agnostic voters.

For some (like Judy Manning and others in these posts), being Christian is all about being included in the right ‘definition’ and ‘club’ of Christianity, of which the qualifications are as narrow as their minds and are very exclusive. For others (like Mitt Romney and many Mormons I know), being Christian is about trying to follow Christ and His teachings (like not judging others, and treating others as you would be treated) which are very inclusive. It is not about what you say, but about what you do, especially in the treatment of others, that defines true Christianity. “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in they name….and in thy name done many wonderful works? …..I will profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. …whosoever heareth my sayings and doeth them, I will liken unto a wise man……………………………. Are Mormons Christians?
January 4th, 2012
2:22 pm
Well that obviously depends on your definition of Christian. They are followers of Christ and His teachings so yes in that respect. Of course Mormons also have lots of recent ‘revelations’ that are not teachings of Christ, but then again, so do almost all recognized Christian faiths, including Catholics, the oldest among them.
Did Christ teach the hierarchy of religious enlightenment? Seems to me that He spoke directly to the people and their understanding did not require interpretation.
Did Christ prohibit alcohol and dancing? Some Baptists seem to think He changed his mind right after that water-to-wine miracle.
Did Christ support the superiority of men over women? His Jewish religion did but He treated all people equally.
Established religions are systems for ordering society and collecting power for a group of people and often have little to do with the teachings of Christ. Being a good Christian is unrelated to which church you do (or do not) attend.

Romney’s Mormon faith is not the same as the Christian faith. He described himself as a former “leader” in his local temple, and he has, at times, made his faith a central part of his campaign. It is fair to examine his beliefs. David did a good job of highlighting the beliefs of the LDS church – multiple gods, that the God Jews / Christians / Muslims worship was once a man, that we can become a god just like Him, that the LDS faith is the only true faith. I could go on… Here is something that I am concerned about specifically: the Smithsonian Institute has taken a very direct stand that the archeology claimed by the LDS faith is false and there is no basis in fact for it. Would a President Romney make changes at the institute for the purpose of validating his faith?

We get to choose between a serial adulterer or a mormon. Mormons may of dropped the polygamy part, unless your an extremist Mormon, but they still believe that the American Indian was Jews transported to North America by God.
Other then that, Joseph Smith was a grave robber who was down on his luck and used the greated tool ever created by man, religion, to bring himself wealth.

When Mike Luckovich makes a cartoon out of this, all the Repub right wingers talk about bias and hate from the left wing. But what the right wing doesn’t want to admit, is that you can’t make this stuff up. It’s absolutely entertaining. With your tax cuts and de-regulation talk, and your social conservatism. I mean, if the left wing could be this lunatic, I’m sure Luckovich would comment on it.

I would not vote for Romney because…#1 he is a hypocrite regarding his moral stance on same-sex unions & abortion…as a Liberal Republican Governor of Mass. he was for it…as a “born-again” (Conservative Presidential Candidate) he is against both…#2 Not because he is a Mormon (personal faith) BUT because as a Mormon he is a part of one of the most POWERFUL entities not only in America but world-wife. If radical Islam’s agenda is extremely overt…The Latter-Day Saints agenda is totally covert. Both have the same goal….domination of the world

Every Mormon I’ve ever known – I would be pleased to have them for a neighbor and friend.
And I’d MUCH rather have a Mormon in the White House than a man who sat through 20 years of the racist rantings of Jeremiah Wright and NEVER had a problem with them – until it became public – and then pleaded “ignorance”.
So, he lied about being ignorant or he was satisfied with the raving and ranting – in my mind either one disqualified him from my respect.

Dear Ms. Manning,
I consider myself a conservative and a Christian and no, I am not a Mormon. I find your statements quoted in the Marietta Daily Journal and the AJC to be ignorant and outrageous.
Why are you afraid of someone you do not know? By all accounts, Mitt Romney is a fine upstanding citizen who has many accomplishments. You can be afraid of him as a leader because he will apparently say anything to be elected but to say that he cannot lead the country because he is a Mormon reveals you to be incredibly shallow and unenlightened.
Judge not lest you be judged. It is people such as you that are the reason I am a follower of Christ but a member of no organized religion. Churches tend to draw boundaries around their own tribal beliefs and prevent their followers from experiencing all of God’s creation, including Mormons.
You have embarrassed the Republican party and our state. Please resign.

In a close election, the GOP will need people with similar views to be enthused about the Republican nominee. The economy seems to be picking up some steam. If this continues, it will be a very close election. There is a real danger if Romney is the nominee that a good chunk of evangelicals, no longer quite so ticked off about the economy, will be ambivalent about the choice. In 2008, much as she hurt the top of the ticket with independents, the choice of Palin for VP probably helped the downballot Republican candidates by generating enthusiasm with this crowd which was then largely fed up with Bush because of the economy. In the case of even mildly improved economic conditions, Romney will probably need to add someone who would excite both the evangelical and libertarian wings of the party while not turning off independents. Is there such a person?

Mormon’s and Christians have several major differences. God was once a man, who had a worldy body and has not always existed according to the LDS. The also deny the diety of Christ as well as tje Doctrine of the Trinity, One God consisitng of three parts. To the LDS they are three seperate beings…there are others…some minor reasearch is all it takes….

One more thing: have we forgotten that this country was created on a foundation of religious freedom? The early settlers were perceived to believe in false doctrine, and they came here to practice their religion as they saw fit.
Bottom line: If the Republicans nominate anyone other than Romney, Obama wins a second term. So, make your comparisons about this: would you prefer a conservative, family values leader like Romney, or a socialist, left wing Obama who will continue to do all he can to remake this country into a nation of weakness and despair?

Your comments about what Mormons believe are not accurate. Mormons absolutely believe in the divinity of Jesus, God the Father, and the Holy Ghost. David:
People in that live in glass houses should not throw stone. If you were to research the LDS church you would know that the information stated is incorrect.
As you said (your answer is first and my reply with the correct information is between the **)
So lets see…
- Mormons believe in multiple Gods for other worlds, Christianity does not reply *WE DO NOT in other gods in other worlds. We believe in Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ the son and the Holy Ghost.*
- Mormons believe Jesus was created, Christianity does not reply* Jesus CHrist was created, he was sent from heaven to earth as we all are. The difference between Jesus Christ and ourselves is he is the son of God.*
- Mormons believe in multiple heavens, Christianity does not reply * It is that we believe in mutliple heavens, it is different levels of heaven*
- Mormons believe everyone (regardless of religion) goes to one of the heavenly kingdoms, except those who leave the Mormon faith. They are cast into “outer darkness”. reply *We do not believe that the only way to go to hell or outer darkness as you are calling it is to leave the religion. There are sins that will get to hell. Yes be believe that there are different levels of heaven, but if you read the bible it states that there are different levels. I believe that is in the book of Revelations. As far as calling hell the outer darkness it is just a nice way of saying it. **
- Mormons believe in baptism for the dead, Christianity does not. reply * in the bible it does talk about bapitisms for the dead, you should read the bible agian.*
- Mormons believe humans (of the Mormon faith) can become gods for other worlds, Christianity does not reply* we believe God created us in his likeness and wants us to be like him, however that does not translate into being God. You seem to read too much into things and misunderstand all.*
- Mormons believe the god of earth was once a man who became god, Christianity does not reply* we believe that Heavenly Father created everything, we do not believe that he was on earth then became god.*
- Mormons believe god must have a wife in order to become a god, Christianity does not reply* we do not believe will become god, but we will be god like. God created us in his likeness.*
- Mormons believe all humans existed prior to life on earth, Christianity does not. reply * you are created prior to conceception. Heavenly Father created you and chose who you would be, before you enter the world, so yes you did exist be for you were born.*
- Mormons believe Jesus and Lucifer are spirit-brothers, Christianity teaches that Jesus created Satan reply* Heavenly father created the angels and his son Jesus Christ so technically they are brothers. You and I are technically brothers but we dont seem to be claiming each other.**
- Mormons believe Jesus should not receive the same worship as God the Father, Christianity teaches Jesus should
receive the same worship as the Father. *reply I dont know where you heard this one but it is not true*
- Mormons teach that god curses certain individuals with dark skin, Christianity does not.. *the bible states that God cursed people with the dark skin. It is not a mormon belief it is a statement in the bible in Leviticus*
.- Mormons teach the Bible is incomplete for faith, Christianity teaches the Bible is reliable *reply We do not believe that bible is incomplete, we believe the book of mormon is a second book. If you feel like it is not possible to for this to be an addition to the bible, so be it. But just an FYI the bible was not written in order and things have been added so you can take that all the way and say the bible isnt true becuase book were added at later times..*

David…so there are theological differences between Mormons and standard Christianity…really1? So the point being that these differences make Mormons sound less credible because their religious beliefs sound wacky. News flash…all religions require a leap of faith and have aspects that sound less than rational to non believers. I will choose a candidate based upon their political positions and competence. Not where they sit on Sundays.
That said I would oppose a strict Muslim candidate not because of specific beliefs related to God but because of the lack of division between church and state that is integral to Islam.

Yes, and the Catholic church used to hold inquisitions and burn people at the stake. I believe it has been several hundred years since that last happened. So Mormonism contains some weird notions, eh? Weirder than a god creating a flawed race of beings and then punishing them for being imperfect? And then having his son suffer and die because of it? Really?
It’s interesting that Jimmy Carter, an actual born-again Christian, never pandered to religion or used it as a political weapon, while another pol who was personally pretty much unchurched nevertheless counted on the Falwell pinheads to constitute a siginificant chunk of his base. Not mentioning names here, but the initials are Ronald Reagan.
I don’t care in Romney is a Wiccan, a Druid, or an Episcopalian as long as he keeps it to himself. I don’t care if he wears ceremonial underpants as long as he doesn’t show them to us. I do care that he knows poop from polish about what makes the economy work, unlike the incumbent and his leftist vanguard.
Ideology functions exactly like religion. That is, it substitutes faith for facts. There is absolutely no evidence that Romney thinks like that. It is, in fact, his dogged pragamatism that the right wing most dislikes. This is why they are no better for the country than the left.
I am sick of right-wingers who “know” when human life begins, and of left wingers who “know” that government is the answer to all questions. Give me someone who recognizes uncertainty and proceeds with a degree of caution and restraint. That would be a positive change after 12 years of Mr. W and Mr. O.

My issue with Mormons are simply that they do not believe in the same Jesus that is taught in the Bible and that without accepting the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Son of God, they will one day, die a very real death and spend eternity in Hell. That to me is very sad.
For everyone on this board who is bashing Christianity because they know someone who has fallen into a pattern of sin. Those individuals do not make the teaching of Christianity false or invalid. If ones religious belief is so irrelevant as you claim then please explain to me how every single Presidential candidate in the last 40 years (including Obama) has come out in public and professed their faith in Jesus Christ and said he was their personal Lord and savior? A question for those of you who won’t vote for a ________ (insert religion of your choice).
We have had many leaders who claim they are Christians but have turned out to be terrible people or terrible presidents.
Richard Nixon claimed publicly to be a Christian but turned out to be a lying sack of crap.
Jimmy Carter is a born again Christian but was a terrible president.
Andrew Jackson broke his word and expelled thousands of Cherokees from their land.
And how many of you really think that Obama, a follower of Rev. Wright, really believes the same thing you do?
So with that said, why would you use professed belief in a particular brand of religion to decide who to vote for?

I am a decendent of early converts to The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints. They joined the church in England, sold most of their belongings to buy the fares that would bring them across the ocean to America and closer to their new faith. They were good god fearing people who also cherished the country that was to become their home. My great-great grandfather was born on the ship while crossing and named George Washington Williams. They were threatened and run out of their homes by other”Christian” faiths that hated them because they believed a little differently. My Grandfather was asked to fight in the Mexican/American war. Even after being driven out of his home, he agreed to leave his family behind and fight for America. He died and was buried along the Rio Grande. His wife that he left behind also died and their children were adopted out and then traveled to the Salt Lake valley with other pioneer companies. They built a beautiful state that is one of the best places to raise a child because of it’s values. Mormons are true Americans. We are patriots. John F. Kennedy visited church officials in Utah and spoke to a large crowd saying that the Mormons are the finest example of true American fortitude. They are an example for all Americans to follow. I am proud of my heritage.

Hey TV, thanks for the thoughtful response. Here’s mine…
- Mormons believe in multiple Gods for other worlds, Christianity does not reply *WE DO NOT in other gods in other worlds. We believe in Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ the son and the Holy Ghost.*
—This Mormon teaching is cited in the Pearl of Great Price, Abraham 4:1
— This teaching is definitely inferred from the other teachings that Heavenly Father was once not a god and was able to become exalted and attain god status. “In the first place, aeons ago God undoubtedly took advantage of every opportunity to learn the laws of truth and as He became acquainted with each new verity He righteously obeyed it. From day to day He exerted His will vigorously, and as a result became thoroughly acquainted with the forces lying about Him. As He gained more knowledge through persistent effort and continuous industry, as well as through absolute obedience, His understanding of the universal laws continued to become more complete. Thus He grew in experience and continued to grow until He attained the status of Godhood. In other words, He became God by absolute obedience to all the truth, and thereby became the author of eternal truth. Therefore, the road that the Eternal Father followed to Godhood was one of living at all times a dynamic, industrious, and completely righteous life. There is no other way to exaltation.”
~Milton R. Hunter, The Gospel Through the Ages (Salt Lake City: Steven & Wallis, 1945), pp. 114-115 (emphasis added).”
- Mormons believe Jesus was created, Christianity does not reply* Jesus CHrist was created, he was sent from heaven to earth as we all are. The difference between Jesus Christ and ourselves is he is the son of God.*
— Please see The Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 346-7 [pre-2002 edition] which teaches that Jesus was not always God.
- Mormons believe in multiple heavens, Christianity does not reply * It is that we believe in mutliple heavens, it is different levels of heaven*
— OK – Mormons believe in multiple levels of heaven, Christianity does not. Depending on how good non-Mormons live their life and the next determines their place in one of two lower heavenly kingdoms –the telestial and terrestrial kingdoms–both of which are still outside the presence of God in his celestial kingdom.
— I am not familiar with the Bible describing different levels of heaven, can you enlighten me to those passages? If you are referring to 2 Corinthians 12:2, some people have interpreted this as indicating that there are three different levels of heaven, a level for “super-committed Christians” or Christians who have obtained a high level of spirituality, a level for “ordinary” Christians, and a level for Christians who did not serve God faithfully. This view has no basis in Scripture. Scripture does speak of different rewards in heaven. Jesus said regarding rewards, “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done” (Revelation 22:12).
- Mormons believe in baptism for the dead, Christianity does not. reply * in the bible it does talk about bapitisms for the dead, you should read the bible agian.*
—There is only one biblical passage that mentions baptism for the dead (1 Corinthians 15:29-30). This practice was done by those outside of Christianity since Apostle Paul made a contrast between what “they” do and what “we” do.
- Mormons believe humans (of the Mormon faith) can become gods for other worlds, Christianity does not reply* we believe God created us in his likeness and wants us to be like him, however that does not translate into being God. You seem to read too much into things and misunderstand all.*
— See the Mormon Doctrine & Covenants 76:58 and 76:95 “Wherefore, as it is written, they are gods, even the sons of God” and “And he makes them equal in power, and in might, and in dominion.”
—”…We must accept the fact that there was a time when Deity was much less powerful than He is today. Then how did He become glorified and exalted and attain His present status of Godhood? In the first place, aeons ago God undoubtedly took advantage of every opportunity to learn the laws of truth and as He became acquainted with each new verity He righteously obeyed it.
114-115 (emphasis added).
- Mormons believe the god of earth was once a man who became god, Christianity does not reply* we believe that Heavenly Father created everything, we do not believe that he was on earth then became god.*
— I didn’t say Mormons believe Heavenly Father was once on earth before becoming a god. Mormons believe that Heavenly Father was not always god, that he was able to be exalted and asind to becoming a god. “God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!!! . . . We have imagined that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea and take away the veil, so that you may see,” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345).
- Mormons believe god must have a wife in order to become a god, Christianity does not reply* we do not believe will become god, but we will be god like. God created us in his likeness.*
— Mormon Doctrine, 516-7 – God the Father has at least one wife that He needed in order to become exalted to Godhood, and by at least one wife we on this world were all literally born as spirit children prior to taking on our tangible bodies of flesh and bones via our mortal parents (McConkie). Also reference the popular Mormon hymn “O My Father”
— But even if I accept your statement, you must have a wife to be god like, right????
- Mormons believe all humans existed prior to life on earth, Christianity does not. reply * you are created prior to conceception. Heavenly Father created you and chose who you would be, before you enter the world, so yes you did exist be for you were born.*
— Christianity teaches that, with the exception of Jesus, humans are not from heaven or “above”. Christianity teaches humans come from earth or “below”. John 3:31-32, John 6:38-46, John 8:23. Christianity teaches that humans do not exist prior to conception.
- Mormons believe Jesus and Lucifer are spirit-brothers, Christianity teaches that Jesus created Satan reply* Heavenly father created the angels and his son Jesus Christ so technically they are brothers. You and I are technically brothers but we dont seem to be claiming each other.**
— Thank you for agreeing with me. As you again state, Mormonism teaches that god (Heavenly Father) created Jesus and also created Lucifer and Mormons recognize them as spirit brothers. Christianity teaches that Jesus is eternal (both past and future) and was never created. And Christianity also teaches that Jesus created Satan.
- Mormons believe Jesus should not receive the same worship as God the Father, Christianity teaches Jesus should receive the same worship as the Father. *reply I dont know where you heard this one but it is not true*
— See the Mormon Gospel Principles, page 41 which teaches prayer should be to the Heavenly Father and no one else. Even Bruce McConkie (member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles for LDS) recognized this: “We do not worship the Son, and we do not worship the Holy Ghost.” (BYU Devotional, 1972). It is OK to pray to Heavenly father in the name of Jesus.
- Mormons teach that god curses certain individuals with dark skin, Christianity does not.. *the bible states that God cursed people with the dark skin. It is not a mormon belief it is a statement in the bible in Leviticus*
— President Brigham Young said: “Why are so many of the inhabitants of the earth cursed with a skin of blackness? It comes in consequence of their fathers rejecting the power of the holy priesthood, and the law of God.
— Book of Mormon is 2 Nephi 5:21. It is said that God cursed the Lamanites with black skin so they would not be enticing unto the Nephites.
— Where is this passage in Leviticus?
.- Mormons teach the Bible is incomplete for faith, Christianity teaches the Bible is reliable *reply We do not believe that bible is incomplete, we believe the book of mormon is a second book. If you feel like it is not possible to for this to be an addition to the bible, so be it. But just an FYI the bible was not written in order and things have been added so you can take that all the way and say the bible isnt true becuase book were added at later times..*
— The Book of Mormon calls those “fools” who claim they have a Bible and “need no more Bible” (2 Nephi 29:3-14).
— The LDS “Living Prophet” can speak oracles which actually supersede scripture and any previous prophet’s oracles, including Joseph Smith. The Bible holds the least amount of authority in the Mormon church. Other Mormon scriptures supersede the bible.

If they mention religion, all one has to tell them is you do not want to discuss it and that individual will not mention it to you again. If all or most people professing to be Christens conducted themselves as Mormons our entire country would have negligible problems compared to crime, unwed mothers, and most social problems that cause and create so much consternation. Mormons, Baptists, Methodists, etc., are all Christians. This is like dissing someone for being bald, tall, short, fat, skinny, whatever. No offense taken on the spelling. The early members of the LDS church were tarred and feathered. Their homes burned, wives raped and children terrified by our “Christian” brothers. They moved west because of the brutal treatment. It was not because of polygamy as you say. It was because they were prosperous in every town that they settled because they worked hard. Another reason was that they were anti-slavery and the residents in the states where they resided feared they would vote as a block to end the slavery being practiced in their communities. The killing of innocent people in ONE wagon train that you refer to was called “Meadow Mountain Massacre”. It was a very sad time in the churches history. There was a paranoia among the members in that area because of the torture that they had endured before coming to the Salt Lake valley. They were wrong. Horribly wrong. As we all know…..people fail. We pray that the Lord will forgive those who murdered innocent families. The LDS church does not give any excuse for what happened. Read unbiased US history. Did you know that until a few years ago there was an extermination order law set up by governor Boggs? Do you still want to perpetuate the hate mongering against the LDS church members?

“… If the Mormon faith adhered to a past philosophy of pluralism, multi-wives,”
So the Mormons have a PAST history of multiple wives? Yet Ms Manning supports Gingrich who also has a history of multiple wives.
And Gingrich is a practicing Catholic which means the two previous marriages were annulled.
Interesting.

Really Chicago Jeff. Do you realize that you are wrong? Do you realize that the founder of the LDS faith was an abolitionist and that is one of the reasons he was murdered? My fiancées father was Mormon and African American. He was unable to hold the priesthood until 1976. I was there. Look back at all of the other Christian religions in the 1800’s and forward. Same thing goes for their hierarchy. Ask any African American member of the LDS church how they feel about it and what the truth is. You are misinformed and spreading hate about something you know nothing about. Back on track…….we need to fix AMERICA.

If you expect an honest answer, you better start by asking an honest question. African-Americans have always been accepted into LDS church membership since the 1830’s. It’s true they didn’t hold many leadership positions until 1978.

guessing her point was how much he’d rely on his religion in passing laws and running the country.
Keep ALL the religion out of the public discourse. Everyone is free to worship as they choose, but even in the US there have already been a couple civil cases by which judges relied on sharia law to let men off the hook for spouse abuse. Sorry, that’s bad news for everybody. Whatever she meant she was right about the massive change and loss of civil rights to certain citizens if the US embraces islam in considering the passing of laws.
while the repubs should have spent the last two years making sound policy towards the countries economy, the first thing they had to do was get all messed up with the whole abortion thing all over again.
NEITHER PARTY of the standard two party system represents the vast majority of the country. Including the mormon candidate fixated on the bondage of women. His record on his religions views of women and his disdain for letting what he does come to light by his example of destroying the records of his tenure in office disqualify this dude from running as pres of the PTA let alone the highest office we have.
You read it here first, but I guarantee you by 2020 repealing laws that prohibit one wife will be facing the court. And it will create the same underclass of citizens by men who procreate beyond their ability to provide or even care just as it does in countries that allow it now. Lawdog, in your 1.42pm post you made a statement about what the Bible states or doesnot state. Look at Chapter 19 of St, Matthew’s writing and read where Jesus Christ stated that it was not so from the beginning that married people were to divorce but because of the hardness of the individual’s heart Moses not God suffered it to be so. So yes one wife or one husband is a requirement of the Scriptures. I would prefer a political leader that has been married just one time because it shows he/she is willing to work hard at seeing their marriage lasts therefore they have shown they are willing to work hard to get the job done they have been elected to do. It also shows they know how to compriimse to find a solution to any problem. Unlike our present day Republican/Tea Party zealots who cannot see the need to comprimise even though they actually have no concrete idea on how to find a solution, they just know nobody else but them has the solution.

Your list of Mormons believe this, and Christians believe this is interesting….
How about this…. there are probably 999,999 different christian denominations in this world, and I’ll bet you couldn’t get many of them to agree on all aspects of their religion.
Here is what I think…. Anyone who believes in Jesus is a Christian.
I don’t think I want to face Jesus after this life and tell him that it was I who decided who could rightfully call him their own. I’ll leave that to him.
Instead of spending twenty minutes thinking and typing differences between your definition of Christianity and Mormons, how about you take that same time and think of someone you don’t like or think you have differences with and think of something nice about them and call them up and tell them. I think Jesus would appreciate a Christian act like that.

Hey Brian,
It’s interesting to me that I can sit down and talk with visting Elders or a High Priest and discuss these different beliefs. They have no problem saying we believe differently on these issues. It is the doctrine of the LDS. Joseph Smith founded Mormonism on the belief that Christianity was apostate.
But when the discussion about these different beliefs is public there are lots of denials.
My guess is that the LDS is aware that the doctrines that separate them from Christianity are not easy to accept without “proper preperation”. I can talk with a practicing Mormon about the doctrine that teaches Heavenly Father was at one time not a god but was able to become exalted and achieve his god state and have them say I’m lying and then come back a week later after talking to someone at Temple and tell me I was right; they just hadn’t been taught that yet.
I believe the point of this news article is not whether Mormons believe the right thing, or whether or not they are good, hard working people, but whether or not the teachings of the LDS church can have an effect on the chances of a leading member of their faith to be elected to the highest office.

Interestingly enough, the mormon ads got started because Mormons don’t advertise about how religious they are. shouting about how religious you are is actually considered poor taste and bad religion. So Mormons in general don’t go bragging about how Jesus is their Savior. In the LDS faith, how one lives their life is indication of how well they follow the Savior, not how loud they talk about it. And because of that, there are probably lots of people that have no idea they even live next to Mormons. The “I’m a Mormon” ads are to counter the idea that we’re living in sects and compounds. We’re normal people just living our lives and helping our communities.
Sadly, I run into people who spout stuff like this unfortunate woman all the time.

Wade,
I agree that it is faith in Jesus that matters. However, if all of historical Christianity (Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, Lutherans, Catholics, etc) teaches about a different Jesus than what Mormonism teaches, do both faiths believe in the same person?
Isn’t different to believe in a person who is and always was God than to believe in a man who was created, lived a life good enough to be exalted and became a god?

Really people? Do you think Mormons really aren’t Christian? That show the ignorance that has enveloped our country. Last time I checked, Mormons do believe in Christ. They believe in the teachings of Christ. Doesn’t that make them Christian? Truth is, every religion is different from each other. But no other church has been attacked like the LDS church for being different. There are many variants of Christianity. And the LDS church is one of them. Get over your ignorance, and stop believing everything everybody tells you. The reason the LDS church is attacked so much is because of its rapid expansion. And if you wanna attack Romney for his religion, just look at JFK. And he wasn’t the most perfect guy either.

Of course there will be a discussion. Romney thought he was pretty slick to start airing those “I’m a Mormon” ads, but the truth is in the pudding: Mormonism is a cult and the group has beliefs that are weirder than Islam or Hinduism. I think Representative Judy Manning is a nice woman; at least from her picture, I think she’s a woman, but I’m afraid of her Presbyterian faith. I suppose it’s better than the Zoroastrianism that is sweeping the South, but every time you look around, they’re having some fundraiser, or coffee or dinner to raise money and outpace the other Protestants in building gyms and things. I know they’re not really normal. In fact, if the Presbyterians adhered to a past philosophy of infant damnation, it doesn’t follow its own present doctrine and that should be of concern to all. They’re no better than those awful Papists and both should be burned at the stake or stoned.

What I find most amusing is that members of one cult, Christianity, are accusing members of another cult, Mormonism, of being cult members. The former cult members, Christians, are comparing the beliefs of the two cults with the intention of showing how their mythical beliefs are clearly so much more logical than the mythical beliefs of the other. They think their myths make sense (talking snakes, animals on an ark, believing in one god yet also being polytheistic [the father, son, & holy spirit], believing in a god who is his own son who is his own father who was born without the use of sperm and was allowed to be tortured to death by the father who is the son who is the father, etc.). And they don’t even realize the only reason that foolishness makes sense to them is because they were brainwashed into believing it from a very young age and that all myths (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Mormonism, etc.) are equally false and equally fictitious. But yet they try to argue that their myth is more valid than the other. Hilarious, really.

Boots and David, I’m not going to tell you that you’re wrong, you are going to believe what you are going to believe. And that ability for you to choose is a God given gift to man, a key and essential part of God’s Plan of Happiness that was developed before the world was. My only suggestion to you is that instead of believing your preacher or Anti-mormon friends about issues like plural marriage, “Black curses” (yeah right, i don’t believe that), etc that you go and check it out from the LEGITIMATE source, from Mormon.org, and read about all of your concerns in context from the church’s own official source. There are even people that you can chat with that can clarify your misconceptions of the church. You do this and THEN, hopefully with prayer to God, the author of all truth, you can make an educated and fair decision for yourself, whether it’s right or not. Think about it.

By the way, I’d like to make you all aware of the official definition of what a “Cult” is:
cult [kuhlt]
noun
1.a particular system of religious worship, especially with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
2.an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, especially as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
3.the object of such devotion.
4.a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
5.Sociology . a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols.
So yes, by the official definition, Mormonism is a cult, but then again, so are Catholics, and Baptists, and Presbyterians, and Methodists, and Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Muslims, and Jews….. you get the point. Pretty much EVERYONE is a part of a cult. Congratulations!

1) Vote for a political candidate based on political idealism, not religion.
I do not currently support Mr Romney or his policies, and know many others of my faith that lack trust in him, and others that love him, and others that couldn’t care less. (In other words, every spectrum of like to dislike.)
2) Mormons are Christian by definition.
3) There are a lot of silly lies and rumors out there, I’m still surprised to hear them and LOL every time.
4) You probably would crap your pants if you read the Bible…
5) Also note that there are more than 10 “common” Bibles, and not all are based on the same original texts. There are thousands of “original” texts, some deviating by single words or letters.
6) Get off your damned high horse. We are the USA I hope we can act like it, and not be so ‘anti’ everything from race to sex to religion to orientation. Love people for who they are.
7) I am a Christian and pay high respect to my religion, and any other practicing “Mormons.”

The only “creation” sense in Mormonism is the physical sense. Otherwise, all intelligent beings possess an eternal spritual component.
Therefore, In Mormonism:
God is not “created” spiritually.
Christ is not created “spiritually.
Not all spiritual beings are by nature equivalent or equal.
God the Father is the greatest spiritual being of all spiritual beings.
Mormons affirm and STRONGLY believe in the Old Testament and New Testament. That is the GOSPEL in Mormonism. Mormons will not “disobey” the Bible in the classic sense.
Mormons affirm and believing in living all consistent and “fruitful” and loving teachings of the Bible.
Don’t be fooled by your local Christian pastor who isn’t well read on Mormonism but is only well read on “anti-Mormonism.”

Mitt Romney has spent his life consistently LIVING the teachings of the New Testament (Bible). He has not only lived a moral life, but he has remembered the poor and reached out and served his fellow man with his free time.
He has raised a good family who adores him.
Mitt Romney is the ONLY candidate with all of the right qualities for this election cycle. Democrats know that HE is the hardest one to beat.
Please help your Christian friends gain the right perspective and help them discern that Romney is the best choice for this time.

Mormons are Christians.
I approve this message.

I love it, always hearing about how we “need to get back to Jesus” when his alleged followers can’t even agree on anything.
Maybe you need to look at yourself before telling everyone else what to do.

Now you understand why I thank God I’m a non-theist.
Verse of the Day

9:44 am
“As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached?” (1 Cor. 14:33b-36 NIV)

So Obama supporters are a cult. That explains why they are so wrong about the record and need reprogramming.

Mormons (member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) are putting out the message that they’re normal, because many who want to turn others against the Church say they aren’t!
Mormons believe in the Jesus Christ of the Bible, as most other Christians do. However, since they teach that God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son, and the Holy Ghost are three beings, who are one in purpose, but separate in body, they are said to be non-Christian by most Evangelicals, who believe in the Creed that says they are “incomprehensible” and “one in substance”.
In other words, they’re saying, “Since you don’t interpret the scriptures the way I do, you aren’t Christian!”
“Judge not, that ye be not judged.”

Yes, Mormons believe nutty stuff, and yes, they can be christian in their own way at the same time. Ok, mormons are basically forced to go out of their way to overcome 100+ years of maligning and persecution. At the end of the day, Mitt’s a very normal guy with extremely well honed skills that make BO look like a lib amateur.

Let me qualify my statements directed toward “my misinformed paranoid Christian friends”. Sarcasm is a great tool for making a point and I try to use it judiciously. Most of my Christian friends are great people and are neither misinformed nor paranoid; I have the most sincere appreciation for them. While not fully informed about my faith, they realize that there are many misrepresentations and rumors out there and they don’t let these things affect their judgment.
I am encouraged by the response to state lawmaker Judy Manning. Many thoughtful objections to her statement were made. But I did hear some comments in support of her and also some conspiratorial comments from a caller on a radio program; I have to respond.
I am proud to be from the South, there is a certain disposition in this region that is widely appreciated. I think I have inherited much of that disposition. But, it pains me to witness so much stupidity at times in this region of the country. Yes I said stupidity instead of ignorance. Why? We have all been deceived by a lie here and there, but you do not have to be fully informed to realize when someone is being deceptive. There are certain clues, mannerisms and attitudes that reveal peoples intent. I have been told and surprised many times by what I purportedly believe. I am even more surprised that some people people accept such conjectures at face value without question or further investigation. The Mormons, as all faiths, deserve the courtesy to define their own faith and not have it defined by others, especially their enemies.
My Mother was raised Baptist. So demonized were Catholics by Baptists of her generation that she once told me she was actually afraid of them as a Baptists youth. Protestants and Evangelicals have come a long way in the South, some of them maybe just not quite long enough.

Thank you David for clarifying what YOU think a Christian is. Thank goodness your authority to define “Christian” is recognized by neither man nor God.
I am a Georgian, a wife, a mother, a sister, a friend and a Christian. I am also a Mormon and proud to be so. I am happy to allow you to exercise your free agency and worship as you please without trying to define for others whether or not you are a Christian. Apparently you missed that little verse in the Bible that says “Judge not”.
