Today’s Marietta Daily Journal carries evidence that the GOP will yet have a debate over presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney’s faith, quoting state Rep. Judy Manning of Cobb County, a Newt Gingrich supporter:
“I think Mitt Romney is a nice man, but I’m afraid of his Mormon faith,” Manning said. “It’s better than a Muslim. Of course, every time you look at the TV these days you find an ad on there telling us how normal they are. So why do they have to put ads on the TV just to convince us that they’re normal if they are normal? … If the Mormon faith adhered to a past philosophy of pluralism, multi-wives, that doesn’t follow the Christian faith of one man and one woman, and that concerns me.”

Wow, it takes serious talent to express such bigotry and ignorance in such a short statement! You all have hammered most of those nails so I will take on this one.
Last time I checked, many of the main biblical characters (Abraham, David, Ezra, Gideon,…) had multiple wives so I am not sure where she gets the One Man, One Woman is a Biblical principle thing. Are you saying that the leaders of God’s chosen people (the Jews not the Baptists) were disobeying Him?

Dang Judy, A Mormon is no more of a threat to the US then a Catholic. We have proven a Catholic President does not take orders from the Pope. As long as they are not a Muslim, oops wait a minute we may have one of them now in office.

I support Ron Paul for President of the United States. But the perverted New World Order integrationist crowd and their devilish black minions believe that we must firstly elect Mitt Romney before we find out what he is all about; Nancy Pelosi style.

For some (like Judy Manning and others in these posts), being Christian is all about being included in the right ‘definition’ and ‘club’ of Christianity, of which the qualifications are as narrow as their minds and are very exclusive. For others (like Mitt Romney and many Mormons I know), being Christian is about trying to follow Christ and His teachings (like not judging others, and treating others as you would be treated) which are very inclusive. It is not about what you say, but about what you do, especially in the treatment of others, that defines true Christianity. “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in they name….and in thy name done many wonderful works? …..I will profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. …whosoever heareth my sayings and doeth them, I will liken unto a wise man……………………………. Mark posted “Once again that nasty Liberal media is responsible for the Republicans missteps”
It is the media like this blog that purposely highlights such religious bigotry. It is a purposeful dirty tactic, and not a “whispering campaign”. Mr. Jim Galloway is part of it.
The only possible good from this underhanded strategy would be if Cobb County voters never re-elect Ms Judy Manning.

TD, your credibility is officially shot if you are hitching your cart to the “Obama is a Muslim” bandwagon. Even if he was a Muslim, so what? There are other elected officials in this country who are Muslim (Minn. state rep Keith Ellison being one of them) and I haven’t seen any evidence of them trying to start a jihad or implement Sharia law (the idea that it could happen is complete BS anyway).

Seems to me that she thinks that there is nothing better than Christians/Catholics. Well, if that is true than why does the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Los Angeles just had a bishop resign because he has 2 teenage daughters.
Those who live ion glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
Are Mormons Christians?
January 4th, 2012
2:22 pm
Well that obviously depends on your definition of Christian. They are followers of Christ and His teachings so yes in that respect. Of course Mormons also have lots of recent ‘revelations’ that are not teachings of Christ, but then again, so do almost all recognized Christian faiths, including Catholics, the oldest among them.
Did Christ teach the hierarchy of religious enlightenment? Seems to me that He spoke directly to the people and their understanding did not require interpretation.
Did Christ prohibit alcohol and dancing? Some Baptists seem to think He changed his mind right after that water-to-wine miracle.
Did Christ support the superiority of men over women? His Jewish religion did but He treated all people equally.
Established religions are systems for ordering society and collecting power for a group of people and often have little to do with the teachings of Christ. Being a good Christian is unrelated to which church you do (or do not) attend.

Ms. Manning you’re the one whom folks should be afraid of since you seem to like to speak without knowing what you’re speaking about. My wife and I are Latter Day Saints (”Mormons”) and there’s no more need to be afraid of us – or Mitt Romney – anymore than there is to be afraid of a Baptist or a Presbyterian. Surely you can think of a better reason to “fear” Mr. Romney than his religious beliefs.

Just doing some quick research in the Bible and regarding the whole multiple marriage thing, it is all over the map with a healthy dose of ambiguity. Kinda blows the whole Defense of Marriage Act reasoning right out the window.

Romney’s Mormon faith is not the same as the Christian faith. He described himself as a former “leader” in his local temple, and he has, at times, made his faith a central part of his campaign. It is fair to examine his beliefs. David did a good job of highlighting the beliefs of the LDS church – multiple gods, that the God Jews / Christians / Muslims worship was once a man, that we can become a god just like Him, that the LDS faith is the only true faith. I could go on… Here is something that I am concerned about specifically: the Smithsonian Institute has taken a very direct stand that the archeology claimed by the LDS faith is false and there is no basis in fact for it. Would a President Romney make changes at the institute for the purpose of validating his faith?

I’m very scared of these bible thumping, holier than thou, conservative so called Christians who go around parading their “goodness”. One of these characters just won an election in my district, but during the campaign, he and his followers broke every campaign law they could get away with breaking. And yes, I am a Christian and on the staff of a church.

Cap Pistol has it right.
We get to choose between a serial adulterer or a mormon. Mormons may of dropped the polygamy part, unless your an extremist Mormon, but they still believe that the American Indian was Jews transported to North America by God.
Other then that, Joseph Smith was a grave robber who was down on his luck and used the greated tool ever created by man, religion, to bring himself wealth.
Not much unlike Muhammad. He wasnt doing to well in polytheistic Mecca so he marries into a merchant family and then steals Judaism and creates Islam.
I cant vote for a person that believes what Mormons believe. Might as well vote for a Scientologist. Xenu is real… Honest.

Oh and far as those commericals they put out, they absolutely must. Most Mormons dont marry out of the church. This creates a very small gene pool to pull from. They must attract new Mormons for genetic diversity.
The Mormon religion is 99% accurately protrayed in a South Park episode. That’s all that needs to be said about it.

When Mike Luckovich makes a cartoon out of this, all the Repub right wingers talk about bias and hate from the left wing. But what the right wing doesn’t want to admit, is that you can’t make this stuff up. It’s absolutely entertaining. With your tax cuts and de-regulation talk, and your social conservatism. I mean, if the left wing could be this lunatic, I’m sure Luckovich would comment on it.

I would not vote for Romney because…#1 he is a hypocrite regarding his moral stance on same-sex unions & abortion…as a Liberal Republican Governor of Mass. he was for it…as a “born-again” (Conservative Presidential Candidate) he is against both…#2 Not because he is a Mormon (personal faith) BUT because as a Mormon he is a part of one of the most POWERFUL entities not only in America but world-wife. If radical Islam’s agenda is extremely overt…The Latter-Day Saints agenda is totally covert. Both have the same goal….domination of the world

Every Mormon I’ve ever known – I would be pleased to have them for a neighbor and friend.
And I’d MUCH rather have a Mormon in the White House than a man who sat through 20 years of the racist rantings of Jeremiah Wright and NEVER had a problem with them – until it became public – and then pleaded “ignorance”.
So, he lied about being ignorant or he was satisfied with the raving and ranting – in my mind either one disqualified him from my respect.
So, Judy….. put that in your pipe and smoke it.
