We’re getting slightly mixed message from Herman Cain’s campaign staff on whether the candidate intends to remain in the Republican presidential hunt. From the Associated Press in Atlanta:
Herman Cain’s Iowa campaign chairman [says] that the candidate is reassessing his presidential campaign a day after an Atlanta businesswoman alleged a 13-year extramarital affair with the Republican.
Steve Grubbs says that on a conference call with senior staff early Tuesday, Cain said the allegations have taken an emotional toll on his family but that he’s moving ahead with the campaign.
Still, Grubbs said Cain told his staff he would be reassessing how to move forward given that the allegations have damaged his fundraising.
The Iowa chairman said Cain still planned to deliver a foreign policy speech in Michigan later Tuesday.
On the other hand, Daniel Malloy, the AJC’s man in Washington, just got off the phone with Cain spokesman J.D. Gordon, who sent this note:
Gordon acknowledged that Cain in a staff call this morning used the word “reassess” about the campaign, but said it was not about whether or not he was going to drop out. Similar reassessments took place after the Iowa straw poll and at one point when the campaign was low on money, he said.
“My interpretation of that is that we are looking to assess where we are at today and where we need to be moving into the primary,” Gordon said.
The campaign will rethink what states Cain visits, the types of speeches he gives and what interviews he conducts.
National Review Online was listening in on the five-minute conference call, and has already produced a transcript.
Earlier this morning, Atlanta radio talk show host Neal Boortz, for whom Cain often subbed on AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB, said that it might be time for Cain to leave the race.
Boortz was touted on Monday as a VIP who would be attending the Saturday opening of Cain’s new Georgia headquarters in DeKalb County.

Barney Frank got the message; he’s not running for another term in office. Now if we could just shame many more of those old-timers out.

I wonder if this whole fiasco will change another item of blind repug allegiance…..the misguided assumption that radio talk show hosts have any concept of the requirements of leadership.

Carol gets my award for “Best-Thinker-on-This-Blog” today. The facts are that this family values issue doesn’t quite work for these conservative Republicans. They can’t keep their p#@$%&s in their trousers. Bill Clinton and John Edwards may be a slime bags, but they never went around preaching from a pulpit about the sanctity of the American family and directly or indirectly pointing fingers at their political enemies, accusing them of immorality. Herman Cain is just more proof that people who live in glass houses ought not throw stones. His wife and children must be proud.

This entire topic fits into this picture that I received in an email recently:
Isn’t it amazing that, within only one week of Tiger Woods crashing his Escalade, the press found every woman with whom Tiger has had an affair during the last ten years? And, they even uncovered photos, text messages, recorded phone calls, etc.! Furthermore, they not only know the cause of the family fight, but they even know it was a wedge from his golf bag that his wife used to break out the windows in the Escalade. Not only that, they know which wedge! And, each & every day, they were able to continue to provide America with updates on Tiger’s sex rehab stay, his wife’s plans for divorce, as well as the dates & tournaments in which he will play.
Barack Hussein Obama has been in office for more than two years, yet this very same press:
Cannot find any of his childhood friends or neighbors;
Or find any of Obama’s Punahou high school or Occidental/Columbia college classmates;
Or find any previous girlfriends prior to Michelle;
Or locate any of his college photos, papers or grades;
Or determine whether he attended Occidental or Columbia as an American citizen or Indonesian, British or Kenyan exchange student (all of which he could have claimed);
Or determine how he paid for an Occidental, Columbia & Harvard education;
Or discover which country issued his visa to travel to Pakistan in the 1980’s;
Or even find Michelle Obama’s Princeton thesis on racism.
They just can’t seem to uncover any of this.
Yet, the public still trusts that same media to give them the whole truth today!
Not to worry though, this same media cabal has already begun to thoroughly investigate and report every detail of the lives and careers of all possible candidates who might challenge the president in the 2012 election.
Simply amazing, isn’t it?

Don’t be too quick to judge. Anyone considering a run for POTUS or any major office would know the liberal media will dig up any and every bit of dirty laundry. So, Cain is a smart man and a successful businessman…would he run if these allegations were true? Maybe, if he let visions of grandeur cloud his judgement, but I think it’s the Democrats’ MO of character assassination…just my opinion.

@Deb — Nobody had to find Tiger’s women. They came out from under the rocks with lawyers in tow.
One would think after two or three years that someone would come forth with information vindicating the “birther” positions. The crazy sheriff in Arizona said he had investigators working on it and proof would be forthcoming. I’m waiting Sheriff Joe.

It couldn’t have happened to a more deserving schmuck.He better move over though and make room for Newt, who is soon on his way.

To all of you “holier than thou” naysayers, remember the passage “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” I, for one believe that many people expect any presidential candidate to be super human, and above all the rest of us earthly beings. One of our most beloved presidents, John Kennedy, had affairs. And yet he effectively and efficiently ran our country until his untimely death. Wake up people! That being said, no one has actually proved that Herman did have an affair, or that he actually harrassed women. The court of public opinion strikes again! Wake up people…don’t you know that much of what you hear on the news is crap? In light of this fact, I don’t know why anyone even wants to be our president.

This is soooo SAD and not very smart! Anyone who is running for public office should do ALL of their reassessing (look into your closet) prior to throwing their hat into the race. Unbelieveable.

What Frederick Douglass wrote at 4:23 pm is so insightful, that I am cutting and pasting it here:
“An African American Republican president is never going to happen. Herman Cain has single handedly made that possibility a bridge too far. For all of his silly inane talk, he has crystallized the myths that many right wing racists have about blacks, the man accomplished next to nothing of substance.”
That is very true. Hubris, Herman Cain, simply hubris.

Why in the world would anyone even consider voting for him in the first place? His 9-9-9 plan is an absolute joke unless you are a fan of Neal Boortz. If you are a female-as stated earlier-where there is smoke, there is usually fire. And what do the Repubs have to offer up in his place? Newt! I don’t know which is worse! Thank God I vote Democrat!

To all of those who ever want to be in politics. Please hire a PEF (Political Enforcement Firm) to take care of all your skeletons so that this type of stuff does not harm your campaign. My agency does just that. We do not care about your party or message. This type of stuff should have been taken cared of before he announced he should have ran. Rick Perry, Newt, and Romney have similar agencies that do the same things. Nothing wrong with sacrificing a few for the good of many.

Although Obama has spent over $2 million over the past three years trying to make sure this information does not reach the light of day for some reason. I think the gloves will be off next year and we shall find answers to some if not all of these questions.

most presidential candidates don’t make it to the top of that gene pool without having a super sized ego and usually that means some affairs/women issues—still herman cain is not guilty until proven so. Even so liberals should not crucify him because Clinton committed perjury and should have been kicked out of office. Liberal candidates can escape on issues such as womanizing, etc because their voters are voting not for morals but for benefits. Conservatives will not vote for such candidates because they are voting their conscience and beliefs. While not perfect these republican candidates are better than the other choice—we have not had a successful president since bill clinton and he was successful due to having a republican house and senate. the media gave obama a pass and he was elected even though there was plenty of evidence that he was a racist, his pastor was a racist, his attorney general was racist and most of the people he made into Czars were racists but that’s o.k. because they were black racists? white people can be intimidated at the polls? Still it is all about power but the american people had best vote for someone that will try to restore America to her original values and will push congress to balance the budget of the U.S.. It is foolish to think we can keep on with more stimulus, bailouts, etc. but that’s the only plan obama has. Obama’s plan of running the budget on 50% borrowed money from China must stop. He was right 3 yrs. ago–it was time for hope and change but not the kind he brought with him. Now we all should be hoping for hope and change in 2012. I for one hope we elect a President that will strive for fair taxation, reducing the deficit, a balanced budget plan, bringing back manufacturing jobs that will hire high school graduates into decent paying jobs, closing the border, and downsizing our bloated federal government by returning most functions to the states. Maybe Santa will be good to the USA a month early next year.

All of you people are idiots. Cain had stage 4 cancer for a long time. I am sure he wasn’t hooking up with that TRAMP while he was sick. Also, she just happens to be broke. All she wants is money. Has anyone asked the other women if they were flirting with him? An old man is not going to grab a girl’s crothch if she doesn’t send signals that she wants him to. Cain is older and grew up in a different era. I don’t care what he and Mrs. Cain do in their marriage, OUR ECONOMY SUCKS! He is the only one who can fix it. GO CAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
