So far as we know, Bob Barr hasn’t yet decide whether to challenge U.S. Rep. Tom Graves of Ranger in a Republican primary fight for the 14th Congressional District.
But somebody out there is already trying to help the 2008 Libertarian presidential candidate make up his mind – with a quick bit of opposition research that prophesies that a challenge to Graves would quickly devolve into a brawl over immigration and gay marriage.
We don’t know the author, but you can examine the sheet by clicking here. It accuses Barr, a former Georgia congressman, of registering as a lobbyist for the ACLU, and – in 2008, as a Libertarian – of openly campaigning against GOP presidential nominee John McCain.
Let us just say that, given the way that McCain is viewed by many grassroots Republicans in Georgia, that last point may be somewhat insincere.
Among sheet’s main arguments:
Bob Barr opposed H.B. 87, Georgia’s tough new illegal immigration law
– Barr claims that Georgia’s [tough] new illegal immigration law was only passed “to make good headlines” and says it is “bad policy.”
– Barr’s ACLU buddies have joined with the Mexican government in suing Georgia over H.B. 87.
(Source: ajc.com: The Barr Code: 2/14/11)
Here’s a passage from the Barr column in question:
Politics aside, it is interesting to witness so many Republican legislators who profess allegiance to principles of federalism and more limited government police power, tripping over themselves to support legislation such as these immigration-based bills.
Greatly expanding the power of law state and local law enforcement to stop and detain people, premised on a power that resides with the federal, not state government to begin with, hardly fits traditional definitions of “conservative.” When it comes to immigration, consistency is often not a component of the debate.
And there’s this, also from the sheet:
Bob Barr now supports gay marriage
– In Congress, Barr wrote the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage on the federal level as a legal union between a man and a woman.
– Now, lobbyist Barr agrees with President Obama that the law is unconstitutional and supports the decision by the Department of Justice to stop defending the law in court.
(Source: LA Times.com: Opinion: Bob Barr, 1/5/09)
Bob Barr now supports repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell
– In a keynote speech to this year’s Log Cabin Republicans National Convention, Barr said that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell should be repealed…..”
(Long Cabin Republicans News Release: Congressman Bob Barr’s Remarks at 2011 Long Cabin National Convention, Apr. 30, 2011)
The Log Cabin speech is still online. Here’s a paragraph:
”A license is a control mechanism; also a means to raise revenue. To license is to grant permission. To license is to control. Which brings us to the real question when discussing whether same-sex marriage should be legal – why do individuals need the government’s permission to marry? The real issue here is not marriage – it is control. Control – the Big C of 21st Century public policy. The important question is whether the government has the proper authority to dictate which individuals can enter into a binding legal agreement. The very nature and history of government action since our nation’s founding reveals it is all about power and control. The effort to define marriage directly or indirectly is but another of many examples of this universal truth.”

Chances are that I’ve known Bob Barr longer than you’ve been alive — since his federal prosecutor days. He’s a nice fellow, and we respect each other. I knew Tom Graves when he was in the General Assembly. Again, a very nice guy.
I think you might want to adjust your concept of news. Reporting on an attack that’s out there — clearly an effort, however anonymous, to make Barr think twice about joining the race — isn’t the same as endorsing that effort.
Supporters of Graves, I’m sure, will be heartened by some of the paragraphs above. But fans of Barr also might want to know that their guy is already posing a worry to some Graves’ enthusiasts.

As a conservative, I agree with Barr’s opposition to HB87, marijuana laws and gay marriage restrictions (they should suffer the same as us heterosexuals many of whom have decided living together is much more appealing than signing off for life with one person).
If it comes down to a personal comparison of the 2 guys, Graves better be worried. Anybody who would defend not paying back $2M by saying, ‘the bank should have known I didn’t have that kind of money when they loaned it to me’ doesn’t deserve to be re-elected.

Pity the people of the 14th district that they might actually have a choice between a public servant and a politician. For all Barr’s foibles and past indiscretions on issues, he is a learned and studious public servant. Barr was chairman of the Cobb GOP when it was a real party organization. He chose to be a Republican here in Georgia when it was not the easy thing to do nor did it come with any guarantees of being on the winning side. Tom Graves is just plain lucky.

@ Three Jack – A “fact” sheet that has no author has NO BUSINESS being published in a newspaper.
Graves (and Rogers) borrowed the money based on property as EQUITY along with their signatures. Typical like many loans during the rising real estate market bubble. They were foreclosed and lost the equity to the bank. They were sued for the difference, but counter-sued claiming there was a promise of refinancing which never was executed. BOTH suits were SETTLED. We don’t know the terms of the settlement – it was a private business transaction and private settlement. No taxpayer dollars were involved. Lies about not paying back $2M, and taxpayers on the hook are typical here – but lies nonetheless.
Hate to tell you and the other partisans – Graves is going to be overwhelmingly re-elected because his politics fit well with a large majority of his constituents. He will likely lose some votes due to this bad business deal since it reflects on him personally. Partisans can call the tens of thousands of voters who re-elect him “stupid”, “rednecks”, or whatever – it won’t change the outcome.

My recollection is that Barr actually worked with the ACLU on a fairly conservative issue. Considering that Barr has earned worldwide renown as a privacy expert, this makes perfect sense. From their press release:
WASHINGTON – In a surprise announcement that comes on the heels of news that the outgoing Majority Leader, Richard Armey (R-TX), is considering consulting for the American Civil Liberties Union, the group said today that it also plans to hire conservative firebrand Bob Barr (R-GA) to work on informational and data privacy issues.
“Rep. Barr and the ACLU disagree on many other issues, but we have no doubt that a strange bedfellows collaboration between us will yield great things for informational and data privacy rights,” said Laura W. Murphy, Director of the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office.
ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said that Barr’s agreement to work with the ACLU “demonstrates how deeply concerns about personal privacy cut across partisan lines.” He noted that the ACLU has “no permanent friendsand no permanent enemies, just permanent values.”
“We look forward to working with Congressman Barr in our fight to protect data and information privacy,” Romero said.
The ACLU’s Murphy said that with both Congress and the White House controlled by the Republican Party, the ACLU must be realistic as it seeks to influence policy in Washington. “If we’re going to affect federal policy, we have to have access.” …

It gives more and more of us, who share that experience, enough insight into this issue to know that those who advocate selectively exempting millions of people from our immigration laws, have self serving and short term, ulterior motives.
I can understand the business class of Republicans, who control the party, and have an insatiable appetite for more wealth, no matter who it impacts, but I don’t understand how the blue collar Republicans can be so easily taken in.
