Kasim Reed on Sunday sales bill: ‘I’ll sign it today’

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said this afternoon that he intends to sign the measure passed by City Council on Tuesday that would allow a November referendum on whether to permit the Sunday sale of alcohol in grocery and other retail outlets.

Said Reed:

“I’m going to sign it. What I’ve said all along regarding Sunday sales is that, though I am personally opposed to the measure, I’m going to respect the will of the Atlanta City Council.

“I have a great deal of respect for Council member Alex Wan. He is the author of this legislation that was passed overwhelmingly by council. I’m going to sign it today.”

The referendum will be on the Nov. 8 ballot, in conjunction with a vote to extend the penny sales tax by Atlanta Public Schools, and fill a vacant seat on the city school board.

As one of you below has already noted, if large crowds are drawn to the polls for the Sunday sales issue — that may not bode well for an extension of the school sales tax (which also applies to the Fulton and DeKalb county systems).

Which wouldn’t break the hearts of those who support next year’s transportation sales tax.

I would much rather the majority of those that drink buy something on Sunday and take it home as opposed to going out to drink and driving afterwards…

If you don’t believe in drinking on Sundays, then don’t do it. But don’t impose your beliefs on me. And me drinking on a Sunday doesn’t make me anti-Christian and it doesn’t make me an alcoholic. Why is it that I can go to a restaurant and have a beer or a glass of wine with my dinner but I can’t buy it in a store and drink it in the privacy of my own home???

Grow up people. You think not selling beer on sunday stops people from DRINKING it on sunday? This changes nothing except the convenience of being able to purchase alcohol on sunday. You want to really make a change? Change the drinking age back to 18, so when I get back from Afghanistan my brothers-in-arms can come have a drink with me. This is a step toward freedoms that we as Americans are entitled. Freedom to make ADULT decisions, and excercise your right as an adult American to light up the grill, watch some football, and drink some beer. Just please drink responsibly and in moderation.

Ya know… sometimes I’d like to take the bible thumpers and bop ‘em upside the head with their good book. Also what gets my goat is… they think EVERYBODY on the planet is Christian. Daaaaa? I’m glad to see that Atlanta is finally getting Sunday liquor sales. It will bring in a lot of much needed revenue. The only bar I’d like to see stay closed on Sunday… and every day for that fact… is the Atlanta Eagle.

To Jim Galloway – Can you tell us exactly what this mean?

The referendum will be on the Nov. 8 ballot, in conjunction with a vote to extend the penny sales tax by Atlanta Public Schools, and fill a vacant seat on the city school board.
