Your morning jolt: With debates looming, Rick Perry’s ‘Fed Up!’ becomes required reading

Labor Day approaches, and if you want to understand Republican dialogue this month – we have three presidential debates in the next 20 days – then your weekend reading assignment is obvious.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s “Fed Up!” has suddenly become a required text.

From the NYT’s The Caucus this morning:

In “Fed Up!” Mr. Perry unleashes a passionate, conservative critique against the size, scope and power of the federal government that leads him to condemn Social Security as “a crumbling monument to the failure of the New Deal” and climate change as “all one contrived phony mess.” He also assails the federal income tax and contends that senators should still be selected by legislators instead of voters.

Since he announced his bid for the Republican nomination, Mr. Perry has defended the ideas in his book while allowing aides to distance his campaign from it. His spokesman has called it a “look back, not a path forward,” but when a reporter in Iowa asked him whether he stands by his statements, Mr. Perry claimed not to have “backed off anything in my book.”

Also this morning, Politico.com looks at the book as a treasure trove for Perry’s GOP opponents – particularly Mitt Romney:

Though it’s Perry’s name on the cover of “Fed Up!”, it’s actually not clear which sections of the book Perry composed himself. There are five people listed in the acknowledgments section as contributors, including a former U.S. attorney who is said to have “devoted himself full time to the completion of the original manuscript.” Also listed is Dave Carney, Perry’s senior political strategist.

The liberal Texas Tribune this week posted “Fed Up!” For Dummies, a quick review for those to busy or too cheap to send $16 to Amazon.com. It notes that, ironically, the forward was penned by Newt Gingrich:

Gingrich really likes Rick Perry, his book and his leadership in Texas. Many Californians, Gingrich says, became fed up with their state’s “socialist policies” and moved to Texas “where on average, they are safer, freer and more prosperous.” (Californians, no emails please. Remember, we did not fact-check the book.)

“His position as governor of Texas gives him a tremendous platform for helping us change course and return to sound conservative fiscal policies,” Gingrich writes, clearly not thinking Perry would become a rival for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination (we’ll be watching the upcoming Sept. 7 GOP debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library to see if Gingrich has changed his mind).

***
Attorney General Sam Olens was visiting his old haunts when he offered this tidbit picked up by East Cobb Patch:

Georgia’s challenge to the insurance mandates prompted by last year’s federal health care legislation has contributed to a likely hearing before the U.S. Supreme Court. But Olens, who publicly announced his support for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in Smyrna earlier this summer, doesn’t believe a ruling will come before next year’s elections.

“The Supreme Court doesn’t want to be seen as overly political,” Olens said. “But this isn’t a sprint. I want the right decision.”

Rush Limbaugh is right. You can tell who the liberals fear. And you can tell it on these blogs.

Liberals fear Palin, Bachmann, Gingrich and Perry.

They ignore the rest. The fact that they ignore Mitt Romney tells me they perceive him to be a liberal too.

And that is why I will vote for either Palin, Bachmann, Gingrich or Perry.

Want some good reading on what’s wrong with the Federal Government and how to fix it?

Read instead Ron Paul’s “End the Fed”, “Revolution, the Manifesto”, “Liberty Defined”, “A Foreign Policy of Freedom”, The Case for Gold” and “Pillars of Prosperity”. Many of these books are compilations of his speaches on the House floor over his decades in congress and show that his principles have been consistent and have been predictive of the messes this country is now in. Unlike Perry who has radically changed his tune to appeal to the growing sentiment that government must get our of our lives and our economy, Ron Paul actually has been the leading proponent of these ideas that have led the country to this point.

Why not instead go online and read up on the career of Mr. Perry, his heading of Al Gore’s campaign in Texas, his previous stint as a democrat, his massive deficit spending in Texas while governor, his executive order forcing teenage girls to get the deadly Guardasil vaccine (while the maker, Merck, contributed thousands to his campaign), and his promotion of the Nafta Superhighway that would force the siezure of over 500,000 acres of land from private property owners through eminent domain.

Rick is trying desperately to catch a wave that Ron Paul created and is the owner of. Rick’s flame will quickly burn out once Republicans find out just the kind of RINO Rick really is.

The media is promoting Mr. Perry because they know all the horrible thing about him. They are sandbagging with these details so that he can become the frontrunner and possibly the nominee before they they unleash the truth and bring him down. The media of course is supporting Obama and knows that Rick would not stand a chance is beating him once the public knows the truth.

If there is anyone that the republican establishment, the democratic establishment and the media truly fear it is Ron Paul. He alone in this race is unwilling to compromise his integrity, his beliefs, or his vote just for partisan politics. He appeals to liberals and progressives who are tired of the illegal and unconstitutional wars, the crony capitalism that has become the hallmark of both parties and their leadership over the past 50+ years, the criminal Federal Reserve and the way it is destroying the dollar to the benefit of the banking cartel, etc. He appeals to republicans for some of the same reasons as well as his consistent and unwavering support of a balanced budget, a much smaller federal government, serious committment to wean the country from its chronic dependence on government entitlement programs and a true committment to national defense rather than empire building.

All of these things scare the hell out of the leadership of both parties as they both benefit polically from these massive government programs as do their friends in big business. The only ones who don’t benefit are the american people and they are starting to finally figure that out. All of the other candidates support all of these big government programs in one way or another while Ron is the only one who doesn’t. Ron Paul 2012.

I don’t know why people continue to argue national politics here – Georgia is irrelevant. It doesn’t matter who the Republican candidate turns out to be(could be (could be Daffy Duck), he will win by a landslide. The state could save a lot of money by just going ahead and committing the electoral votes to the Republican, without holding a costly election. Just review the 2008 Georgia election results – McCain won 125 out of 159 counties.

Buzz,

That line of thinking is the most overplayed talking point in the right wing book. The people you reference are talked about because they make news for various reasons: Palin is a great politician with an uncanny ability to appeal to her base while appearing to be a complete bimbo to others. She makes news and therefore people pay attention. Bachman was the front runner for the GOP which made her worthy of scrutiny. Gingrich is one of the smartest guys in the room, even if he is a complete hypocrite in terms of family responsibility. He makes news as a former speaker and particularly here because he is local. Perry gets scrutiny for the same reason as Bachman, he’s now the front runner.

Bottom line, grab up another soundbite to parrot. I guarantee no Democrat or liberal is the least bit afraid of Palin, Bachman or Gingrich. (Or Cain or Paylenty or Huntsman for that matter) as they are, whether you like it or not, completely un-electable. Perry and Romney are the sole electable ones out of the people in the race as they are the ones able to appeal to the only people who matter in Presidential elections: moderates and independents.

Saying that “liberals” are afraid of these people because they talk about them is like saying Americans are afraid of the Kardashians. Silly logic, doesn’t help your side and actually does more harm than good.

Mr. Liberty,

The above applies to Ron Paul as well. Mr. Paul has some good ideas and I respect him greatly, but the reality is that he is not feared anymore than the others on the list.

Those people and Mr. Paul are un-electable.

MrLiberty

September 2nd, 2011

Missy – That’s certainly not how I would interpret several polls that show Ron Paul within a couple of percentage points of Obama in national polling. He is certainly electable if everyone who supports the same ideas as him voted for him instead of saying that he is unelectable.

And as for age, he has already challenged all of his competitors to a long bike race in the hot Houston sun. He may be 76, but his love of freedom and liberty keeps him young. As well, selling out your principles and constantly lying truly ages one (just look at before and after pictures of all of our presidents). Ron won’t have that problem.

And as for legislation, if Ron Paul is elected president, he will also sweep in many members of congress with similar views (his Campaign for Liberty is already working to promote these candidates), and the entire congress will know that america’s attitude about government has fundamentally changed and that they better get with the program. In the same way that Ronald Regan (hate using his name in conjunction with Dr. Paul) used the media and outreach to the public to gain support, Ron Paul actually understands economics and sound foreign policy and could significantly influence public opinion. He would also veto significant amounts of legislation that would worsen our situation (that has power), and can basically do almost anything he wants to departments and agencies under the executive branch. Additionally he is the commander in chief of the military and can without congressional approval begin bringing the troops home from abroad to save hundreds of billions of dollars almost immediately after taking office.

Its funny that we allow the president currently to behave literally as a dictator, starting wars without constitutional approval, violating international law through torture, violating the constitution with spy programs, siezures of businesses without due process or inviolation of contracts, and a whole host of other things but then take the attitude that a man who actually wishes to restory freedom and a prosperous america can’t get anything done without 535 identical twins in congress to support him.

Not a very consistent understanding of the roles of the three branches of government.

Yes, state and local. Being a Democrat in Georgia and arguing with Republicans, reminds me of the Union soldier in front of the Confederate line, at Buzzard’s Roost, in North Ga., who stood up and began reading the emancipation proclamation – he, of course, was met with a hail of gunfire.

Um-you do know you are speaking of Bush II’s terms in office right? You cannot hang all those charges on the current POTUS. Ron Paul does have some good and honorable ideas, however, as I stated before he is unelectable.

Pres. Obama promised to bring all the troops home and that is the main reason I voted for him. He has not kept his promise. But he is the only sane and honorable candidate at the moment.

Filter – He opens his mouth to expose the truth about FEMA and the complete failure it is and the media become apoplexic. Anderson Cooper was dumbfounded with Ron’s plain, clear, and unarguable discussion of the chronc failures of this organization. Only Ron is willing to say that the emperor has no clothes, that the federal government that everyone worships is not only completely incapable of doing what it claims, but is also $15Trillion dollars in debt. That scares people. The media and their owners have been keeping these fundamental truths from the ears of the majority of americans for decades. The government schools actively work to indoctrinate kids into believing that government is good and the solution to all problems in society and that they are fundamentally more capable than the private sector at solving problems. Ron has exposed that lie and is getting SO much support in the general public that now even his big government rivals for the nomination are parroting his ideas and comments.

You can deny that they are afraid of him, but one need only look at the conscious and deliberate exclusion of any coverage of him following his virtual tie for first place in the Iowa straw poll as proof of their fear. They are doing what those in power have always done with things they fear – ignore and deny and hope they will go away. The last time around they used the tool of ridicule, but this time everything he said would happen with the housing bubble, the economy, the failed wars, the value of the dollar and gold have all come true and americans have gone to the real media – the internet – and have found out the truth themselves and are rapidly getting behind this wonderful spokesman for liberty.

What they also fear about Ron Paul is that his supporters don’t really support him as much as they support his ideas and his consistent support of them. You can smear a person, you can bring up things from their past, but you cannot fight an idea whose time has come.

I was looking at Perry hoping for him to be the one, but I don’t think so. He’s starting to look too much like a career politician. There’s a story out today about him replacing an appointee because he didn’t want to approve a nuclear waste project that one of Perry’s big contributors wanted.

Missy – It is sad that you are part of that “but he did that too” crowd, but if it will make you happy, go back and read other posts of mine including on this blog in which I make the point that lying and selling out have impacted all presidents for the past 50 years.

W was a war criminal and a dictator too who laid the foundation for the abuses Obama is committing. Before him Clinton expanded the executive power with illegal bombings in Sudan, lying under oath, and plenty of other things. Something horrible could be said about most presidents and their unconstitutional expansion of executive power. And by the way, Obama promised to do a lot of things when he was running for president that he has not done since taking office – like ending torture, repealing the Patriot Act, closing Guantanamo, and countless other horrible things that his predecessor put in place.

Good luck with hanging your hopes on Obama. He is just another candidate put forth by the ruling elites to continue the policies of W. By all rights, this should be considered Bush’s 3rd term. Perry would just be his 4th.

The electoral college system renders all democratic votes in Georgia null and void – they don’t count. Seriously, you and the Rupublicans are totally wasting your time by arguing presidential politics here. The candidates already know that – that’s why you won’t see them in Georgia. If you are a democrat and want to be surrounded by like minded people, you will have to move to a blue state – choose a seat on the other side of the stadium…

td – what a shame that you use the media slam word of “isolationist” rather than bothering to find out what Ron Paul’s real positions are on foreign interactions. He is in fact a “non-interventionist”. He firmly recognizes that what goes on in the rest of the world impacts the US. The difference is that he believes that we should allow our citizens and businesses to freely trade with other peoples and other countries and that we should keep our noses and our troops and our CIA out of other country’s political affairs (and territory). Folks like Pat Buchanan might generally be called isolationist in that they actually want to close the borders to trade, etc. The current foreign policy is in fact very isolationist in that it has isolated us from most of the world’s peoples because they all hate us for our interventionism, election manipulations, and illegal invasions and occupations of sovereign nations.

We didn’t beat the Soviets by invading them. We beat them by trading with them and exposing their citizens to the riches of the capitalist system and the ideas of liberty. If we could actually restore liberty in this country and Ron Paul would like to do, we could once again be the shining example of freedom to the rest of the world and that would go a lot farther to peaceful relations with other countries than bombing, invading, and occupying them would. Stop buying into the fearmongering coming from those who profit immensely from our interventionist foreign policy. The only true fear these people have regarding Ron Paul’s foreign policy is how much it will decrease their profits.

Rick Perry is his own worst enemy.

People like td can not figure this out, because the radio has convinced them that redistribution of wealth occurs, that 48% of the country contributes nothing and that everything in their lives is regulated. Nothing is different now than it was 30 years ago…except for the creation of a 24hr news cycle.

I always thought conservatives would be happy that almost half of the country makes no effective tax rate…primarily because they, like Joe the Plumber, do not know the difference between revenue and profit or between marginal tax rates and effective tax rates. 48% of the country has an effective tax rate of 0…I thought that the GOP would be proud of that accomplishment. After all, it was the Bush tax cuts that increased it to 48% from whatever necessarily lower level it was before those that cuts and credit creations (it is basic math). So…raise taxes. Oh…but therein lies another dilemma, you do not want to do that either.

I hold no opinion on these things, I really do not care. TD is the problem with America though. Like Rick Perry and the John Birchers, they hate what is going on now (but only bring up contemporary politics because a democrat is the president) and pretend the past was different. Furthermore, they want nothing more than power and to not solve those issues…because it would give them fewer things to complain about. They are toxic individuals.

They are the same people that think welfare exists because of bleeding heart liberals. Name one conservative on the Agriculture Committees that is proposing to do anything substantial about food stamps…then look at who finances their campaigns. Companies like ConAgra Cargill are to blame, they make billions every year because of food stamp programs.

There is no redistribution in the US. Less than 3% of revenue goes toward the “redistributing social programs” that they always refer to. Never mind the $700billion in defense contracts, or the $400billion in tax cuts, or the $250billion that goes to pharmaceutical companies from Medicare plan d, or the $15billion that go to Agribusiness from welfare, or the $4billion that go to doctors from Medicaid,…the list goes on.

The only redistribution going on, it seems to me, appear to be tax dollars ending up back in the hands of the wealthy Americans that pay slightly more in taxes…they get their money back anyways. The entire $3.1trillion budget that will be passed next year, just like every budget before that one, has put $3.1trillion dollars back in the hands of the American public, specifically those with better jobs and better degrees.
