Georgia native and tea party favorite Herman Cain edged out libertarian Ron Paul at the GOP annual fish fry down in Perry on Saturday.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney finished a surprisingly distant fifth, behind Texas Gov. Rick Perry and another Georgia favorite, former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich. Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann also had a weak showing.
Results were just phoned in by B.J. VanGundy, the party’s second vice president. Over 1100 tickets were sold, he said, and 890 votes were cast.
The totals:
– Herman Cain, 232 or 26 percent;
– Ron Paul, 229 or 25.7 percent;
– Rick Perry, 179 or 20 percent;
– Newt Gingrich, 162 or 18 percent;
– Mitt Romney, 51 or 6 percent;
– Michele Bachman, 29 or 3 percent;
– Rick Santorum, 4 or .4 percent
– Jon Huntsman, 3 or .3 percent;
– Thad McCotter, 1 or .1 percent;
– Buddy Roemer, 0;
– Gary Johnson, 0;

Romney is only the frontrunner in the same sense that Oxendine was the “frontrunner” for governor last year. I expect Romney will lead in the polls for a few more months because of name recognition, but will end up as a non-factor in the long haul.

I was also at the straw poll and it amazing that Cain only won by 3 votes considering he had people transported there by bus loads to vote for him and the talk show radio host have been pushing for people to come out and Vote for Cain. Considering his buses, local media push, and his home turf I expected him to win by a large margin. But aside from that it was obvious that Ron Paul’s supporters were there as his buzz was by far the largest this Ron Paul rEVOLution is getting stronger and stronger and it wont be long until the media stops calling Romney the front runner and start to embrace the best choice for our Country Ron Paul 2012!!!

Find it funny anyone would take these polls as a sign of someones electability quite funny. Ron Paul supporters so excited that he may have a chance because he has practically tied in two straw polls. These are polls that you have to pay to vote in. Which ever canidate buys the most tickets wins. Look at national polling data on support for Paul vs other canidates he’s trailing by double digits. If he got the nomination, he could have a chance to win because he pulls in democratic support where he loses it from republicans. The problem is–he WON’T get the nomination. There’s no possible way. If he decides to run as third party canidate he splits the anti-obama votes and the election is handed to Obama on a silver platter.

@ Jessica this is from his official website http://www.ronpaul2012.com for his views on National Defense:
PROVEN LEADERSHIP
“Ron Paul is one of the outstanding leaders fighting for a stronger national defense. As a former Air Force officer, he knows well the needs of our armed forces, and he always puts them first. We need to keep him fighting for our country.” – Ronald Reagan
A PRO-AMERICA FOREIGN POLICY
As an Air Force veteran, Ron Paul believes national defense is the single most important responsibility the Constitution entrusts to the federal government.
In Congress, Ron Paul voted to authorize military force to hunt down Osama bin Laden and authored legislation to specifically target terrorist leaders and bring them to justice.
Today, however, hundreds of thousands of our fighting men and women have been stretched thin all across the globe in over 135 countries – often without a clear mission, any sense of what defines victory, or the knowledge of when they’ll be permanently reunited with their families.
Acting as the world’s policeman and nation-building weakens our country, puts our troops in harm’s way, and sends precious resources to other nations in the midst of an historic economic crisis.
Taxpayers are forced to spend billions of dollars each year to protect the borders of other countries, while Washington refuses to deal with our own border security needs.
Congress has been rendered virtually irrelevant in foreign policy decisions and regularly cedes authority to an executive branch that refuses to be held accountable for its actions.
Far from defeating the enemy, our current policies provide incentive for more to take up arms against us.
That’s why, as Commander-in-Chief, Dr. Paul will lead the fight to:
* Make securing our borders the top national security priority.
* Avoid long and expensive land wars that bankrupt our country by using constitutional means to capture or kill terrorist leaders who helped attack the U.S. and continue to plot further attacks.
* Guarantee our intelligence community’s efforts are directed toward legitimate threats and not spying on innocent Americans through unconstitutional power grabs like the Patriot Act.
* End the nation-building that is draining troop morale, increasing our debt, and sacrificing lives with no end in sight.
* Follow the Constitution by asking Congress to declare war before one is waged.
* Only send our military into conflict with a clear mission and all the tools they need to complete the job – and then bring them home.
* Ensure our veterans receive the care, benefits, and honors they have earned when they return.
* Revitalize the military for the 21st century by eliminating waste in a trillion-dollar military budget.
* Prevent the TSA from forcing Americans to either be groped or ogled just to travel on an airplane and ultimately abolish the unconstitutional agency.
* Stop taking money from the middle class and the poor to give to rich dictators through foreign aid.
As President, Ron Paul’s national defense policy will ensure that the greatest nation in human history is strong, secure, and respected.

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/poll-ron-paul-rates-front-runners-romney-perry-200845109.html
“In new poll, Ron Paul rates with front-runners Romney and Perry”
In yet another sign that perhaps the news media ought to think about treating his presidential campaign more seriously, Ron Paul was viewed about as favorably as Rick Perry and Mitt Romney by Americans in a new poll.
In an Associated Press-GfK telephone survey of the general population, 37 percent of the respondents said they have a positive view of the libertarian-leaning representative from Texas, while 36 percent said they did not.
Perry, the Texas governor, and Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, invoked similar favorable/unfavorable ratings that also fell within the poll’s 4.1 percent margin of error. Romney was viewed favorably by 39 percent of Americans, and Perry was viewed favorably by 33 percent.
Another 41 percent said they viewed Romney unfavorably, and 36 percent viewed Perry unfavorably.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had the widest gap among the poll’s respondents, with 57 percent viewing him unfavorably and 27 percent viewing him favorably.
A Gallup survey earlier this week showed that Paul polls within the same margin of error as Perry and Romney in a general election match-up with President Barack Obama.
The poll was conducted from August 18 to August 22 and released Friday.

Have you ever heard of a mark of reprisal? There is a big issue that nobody is talking about here. Michael Scheuer and Bob Baer, ex CIA officers (Scheuer in charge of OBL) both claimed and believed OBL to have died in 2002. It was even covered on CBS. No body to prove it.. they ‘dumped’ it at sea? Give me a break! You never dump a body at sea. You do Autopsies and forensics to find out more about his health conditions. Cause of death, what had he been eating, what was kind of condition was he in… etc. etc. Don’t believe for a second OBL was actually killed in Pakistan. If he was then we have a big problem because we pay $3 billion annually to have Pakistan as an ally.
Ron Paul is right, if OBL was in Pakistan, than Pakistan should have worked with us to absolve the issue and capture him alive for criminal trial.

Why is their always something rude and disrespectful about a significant portion of the Ron Paul crowd? I saw it at the Iowa Straw Poll when Herman Cain was holding court outside his bus and a bunch of Ron Paul supporters holding signs marched right past being as loud and disruptive as they could? Such classless behavior, I am proud and happy to say, I have never observed from the Herman Cain folks.
Mr Cain is a true leader who projects confidence much as Ronald Reagan except this man is much better educated and more intelligent. There is a reason why Herman Cain’s speech late into the Iowa Straw Poll (3pm) swayed so many who heard it, even to the point of many folks expressing remorse over having already voted for someone else. Plus Herman Cain is the only candidate who can shut down the left’s playing of the race card and class envy crap. Go Herman Cain!

LMS I’m confused:
1. RP supporters should abandon him because of his poll performance? BUT its ok for you to support Cain?
2. You keep demanding each RP supporter essentially post a dissertation on the man’s entire platform, but I’ve not seen you do the same for Cain.
I’m not going to attack Cain as I’m not that familiar with him. I have read about his private sector success which is impressive. I’m not sure that necessarily translates into an understanding of macroeconomics, especially on the level of RP. But here’s my biggest problem with Cain: Even if he is incredibly smart and has the absolute best of intentions, he doesn’t know how Washington works. The man would get steamrolled the second he hit the oval office. If Cain is as good as you say, I’d honestly then like to see him in a roll such as being on RP’s staff. I’d hate to see a good man get elected and then get destroyed by the establishment.
You are also overlooking perhaps the single most important aspect of Ron Paul. It’s the saying, “Dr. Paul cured my political apathy.” He has the capacity to wake up an entire generation and actually get them to believe in the power of democracy again.

@Last Man Standing
What are Mr. Paul’s plans for dealing with the national debt ($14.7 trillion and rising)?
He would erase the 1.6 trillion that is on the Fed’s books, debt that was created out of thin air, that would give us a year to get our ‘house’ in order. One of the main things is to decrease the military bases around the world, South Korea is a rich country so is Germany they can afford their own security, don’t you think? That would save billions if not trillions. Also, Ron Paul has a just war foreign policy, so he would go to war if attacked and declared by Congress, none of these preemptive wars of aggression, that also cost billions of $.
. Do you know what his plans are for the illegal immigrants who are here already and siphoning the government? Also, what about the entitlement programs that further deplete the treasury?
As Ron Paul has stated there are too many illegals here to ship them back, I mean talk about police state, what are you going to do raid millions of homes here in America and ask people for their papers? That isn’t going to happen. Ron Paul has stated he would end their objective for coming here, that would mean if you are an illegal and you have a kiddo here your child doesn’t automatically get citizenship like they do now. Anyway I think Ron Paul’s answer to helping illegals would be for the churches to get involved. You know this country has a long history of charity and the churches were the forefront of many organizations like colleges and hospitals. In fact, Ron Paul said when he worked at a charity hospital they never turned down anyone and he made as a doctor around $3.00 an hour. I realize that sort of ‘old America’ is gone but that doesn’t mean we can’t return to our charitable roots as a nation.
Regarding the entitlement programs he has stated that he would take care of the people that are currently involved in these programs but allow for the younger people to opt out since ss and medicare are going to be available for them when they hit retirement.
What is Ron Paul’s attitude toward enforcing immigration laws and securing our borders?
I think the answer to Ron Paul’s attitude toward enforcing immigration has been answered. In regard to securing our borders he would utilize all those military personnel that have returned home from guarding the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan to secure our borders. Just think as a military family how wonderful for families to have their moms, dads, uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters defending our borders.
Ron Paul is someone that I would be very proud to call my president, the man has incorruptible integrity, always tells the truth and takes his oath to the Constitution seriously.

Anyone who is curious about Ron Paul’s views can go to his campaign website. He has been espousing the same views for almost 40 years with consistency. He does not taylor his speech to whom he is speaking. He does not say what he thinks he needs to say to get elected. Honesty, integrity, constitutionally consistent, knows how an economy grows and what causes it to crash. Peace, liberty and prosperity go hand in hand and I want these things for our posterity, just as the founders wanted these things for their posterity, us.

Obviously, Ron Paul is the only one offering real solutions to our problems. Everything stems from the corrupt influences of the central bankers in the fed. We are no longer a government by, for, and of the people. Politicians no longer respect the people’s opinion. Don’t you think it odd that the Congress approval rating is so low, yet it doesn’t reflect itself in the elections. If it did we would throw out 80 to 90% of them each election cycle. Is it any wonder that incumbents raise many times what challengers do….hmm…..let’s put on our thinking caps shall we? The bankers are filthy rich and incumbents get the money. Is there a connection here?

The basic skills of Problem Solving will work just as well in the Federal Government as the private business sector. Herman Cain has proven over and over that he is not one to accept failure. Nor is he so full of himself that he cannot change course if something is not working. I have the utmost confidence in Herman Cain’s ability to put our great nation back on the right course.
As for Ron Paul, I harbor no ill will and agree with most of his positions. You will never hear from me the vile insults the Paul folks direct toward Mr Cain. For me Herman Cain is the better of the two.
In the end we will have to get behind the Republican candidate no matter who it is because even the worst in the field is much better than Barack Obama. Going third party and giving Obama another four years would be a disaster. I agree with the Paul folks that the Fed can be troublesome but it can also work as intended and is not the central cause of all our problems. Its simple elimination would not usher in an era without problems. I am convinced the Paul folks make too much of it.
What I am convinced of is a Black Conservative’s ability especially in the wake of Barack Obama to Unite our nation on many levels that no other candidate could. If Ron Paul is the nominee I could and would support him. My much bigger problem would be a Huntsman or Romney.

For someone who leans to the left, this is great news. Pour that republican money down the “ratholes of the hopeless”!!
For every dollar given to Cain, Paul, Bachmann, Santorium, etc, that’s a dollar taken away from candidates who might actually have a chance against the President.
With each passing day, it is becoming more clear that a strong business man like Romney, who can appeal to the swing vote in 2012, has no chance in the republican party anymore.
The republican base will be delighted to lose the 2012 presidential election as long as they can ensure that their candidate has “purity of thought and adherence” to demands of the republican/tea party revolutionary wing of the party.
When the dust settles next year, I believe the republican party will exist in name only, taken over by the tea party revolutionaries who will never be able to expand the narrow revolutionary base of that party.

Last Man Standing:
Solutions to government induced problems are never easy. The basic idea of any solution may be sublime and easy to grasp, but the implementation is a logistical nightmare. The following are overviews of Ron Paul’s stance on the questions you’ve asked. For a more in-depth discussion, I suggest any book by Ron Paul, Ludwig von Mises, Murray Rothbard, Tom Woods, and many others.
1) Immigration: End the welfare state. No amnesty for illegal immigrants. Restore the economy to a healthy free market with sound money. Provide a generous visitor work program. Allow landowners to provide private property security assistance. Stop federal mandates on states to provide free education and medical care for illegal immigrants. End automatic citizenship for children of illegals born here. No tax supported benefits for illegals already here.
2) National Defense: We must only fight wars that are declared by Congress. People hate us for invading their countries, supporting dictatorships, starving people through sanctions, and maintaining an unprecedented military empire of global reach. Stay out of a sovereign nation’s affairs. Bring our troops home. Allow them to secure our homeland instead of a military base in South Korea, Germany, Iraq, etc. Close foreign bases. We are spending trillions of dollars on our empire. Promote free trade and friendship with other countries. National Defense begins here, not halfway around the world.
3) Entitlements: We must honor our existing commitments. However, these programs are insolvent and bankrupt. Let’s take the elderly for instance–there is a cost of living increase of 10% while their benefits are only increased by 2%. The solution is purely an economic one. Restore the economy. Save the dollar. End the welfare state. If we have a thriving economy, the benefit is two-fold as pertains to entitlement programs–fewer people need entitlements and restoring the free market induces competition which keeps prices down. Allow people to opt out of these programs and return to the American ideal of self-reliance. The Federal Government should be kept out of the picture. Any entitlements or care for the impoverished/elderly should be left to the States and to community action. You can take care of people, but you cannot do it with a deficit.
4) National Debt: Liquidate the debt. Allow bankruptcies and failures to occur. End the Federal Reserve. End unconstitutional programs and departments. Stop sanctions. Initiate trade with countries. Restore a free market economy. Stop spending, stop borrowing, start saving, and pay down the debt.
@Bentley: Ron Paul respects the rule of law. Pakistan is a sovereign nation. They have the right to be upset at the US for conducting a clandestine mission without prior approval. We could have just as easily informed Pakistan of our intentions, captured bin Laden, and extradited him to the US to stand trial. THEN execute him after his conviction at trial.

FreeMktMonkey – The FED is the main problem with this country, many early US presidents have sought to rid us of central banking since the founding of our country. As long as private bankers pull the lever on the money printing presses, they control everything. President Woodrow Wilson himself said this after he allowed the FED to take over our economy. “I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country.
A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit.
Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation,
therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men.
We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely
controlled and dominated governments in the civilized world.
No longer a government by free opinion, no longer a government by
conviction and the vote of the majority, but a government by
the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men.” – Woodrow Wilson.

I’ll answer two questions in one Last Man Standing. I believe securing OUR borders in a priority in a Paul administration. He believes our resources have been wasted patrolling the streets and protecting the borders of foreign nations when the situation here has become increasingly more problematic.
As far as national defense, he would first go through the military budget and eliminate waste (maybe he would implement an investigation into missing funds to find out where billions have disappeared), embolden a national HOME defense rather than spread our troops all across the globe, FOLLOW THE CONSTITUTION, direct much attention to veteran care, benefits, and bestow all honors on their service to this nation. These would be initial actions.
Dealing with the debt? First, he would liquidate malinvestments instead of propping them up, stop bailing out those who made them, of course, his main platform audit the Federal Reserve, work towards bringing back sound and legal money as directed by our Constitution, eliminate the Federal Income tax which, during Ronald Reagan’s term in office was investigated by the Grace Commission as being used almost entirely to service the INTEREST ONLY on the national debt.
There is much more but I think those are key elements of his platform.

I may have come off a little rude previously, but it is time Americans wake up and embrace a man that is not going to lie to them, flip-flop, or pander to any special interests. Even if you don’t agree on every issue with Dr. Paul, wouldn’t it be a nice change to have a president you can believe in, that you can take what he says to the bank. Mr. Cain isn’t that bad, in fact he is probably the closest to Dr. Paul’s views. Maybe someday Cain’s time will come, but as for right now we need a man with a solid record that acts with conviction and integrity. Someone we know for certain isn’t going to sell out his principals, that man is Dr. Ron Paul.

The only goal for Herman Cain is to win. He is confident in his beliefs and instills that confidence in others as few I have seen. It is Every candidates goal in the end to take votes from Each of the others. Unless under a system where voters can vote more than once this is the only way the one who does win wins. Promote what you feel is right about the candidate you support and respect each individuals right to make their own choice. Let’s all respect the process each other and ourselves. True words! Spend every penny you have to support those riding in the republican clown car so when they lose their base will be exhausted.
81 comments and mostly nonsense. On the first Wednesday of November 2012, none of the people on the ’straw poll’ list will be elected president. No matter how many are seeking a magical exoneration from the 2001-2008 policies that dug the giant hole and no matter how hard the tea-whatevers try to keep everyone else away from the shovels to clean it up, the majority of the Public isn’t buying it.
Carry on with the foolishness of ‘gold standard’, ‘eliminate the fed’, ‘fair tax’ whatever no chance option you prefer, it ain’t happening in this country.
And President Obama will have an additional chance to finally look Left and finish restoring this Country to greatness.
Also, I am convinced that LMS must get paid by the character.

@Last Man Standing
I appreciate your willingness to ask questions and your thoughtful responses. This respectful exchange of ideas is what an informed and educated electorate ought to do.
To answer or rather clarify Ron Paul’s position on food stamps, welfare and farm subsidies. There are many different angles to look at this from. I have studied Ron Paul’s view on taxes from many different sources, one source that I have recently read is from his latest book, ‘Liberty Defined’, there is a chapter entirely devoted to the subject. Since taxes are the means by which the government takes from one group to give to another group I believe that Chapter would most suit your inquiries.
“The greater the government taxes, the greater the need, since government management is inferior to individual management and the money is always misallocated.” “Depending on government to take care of us sharply diminishes any desire for assuming responsibility for oneself. Government spending is unwise…The only people who benefit are the politicians, bureaucrats, and the special interest recipients of government spending programs.” Ron Paul
I recommend reading the whole chapter but those few sentences show that taxing of one group to give to another destroys production in the private sector. Also, subsidizing anything you get more of it. For example farm subsidies, the government gives money to corn farmers, so now there are more corn farmers. Try that with anything the government subsidizes you’ll get the same result.
Also, with foodstamps/SNAP, ask yourself who profits from those debit cards being issued, google it, you’ll be surprised. It is JP Morgan bank, they make tons of money issuing the debit cards to the food stamp program, interesting isn’t it? That is the point Ron Paul is making all those entitlements seem like they help the people but in actuality the banks and special interests make huge profits at the expense of struggling Americans.
Hope that helps.

Well legislatively, he’s voted AGAINST all the stupid laws that the others have created that are UNCONSTITUTIONAL for many, many years! They call him Dr. NO because he votes against all the laws they having been creating where the elected officials enjoy benefits we do not, where there are laws that WE are subject to that THEY are not, for any power that the Constitution does not specifically allow for. HIS legislation would be to UNDO all the unconstitutional crap that’s been created in the last 40 to 50 years. Understand the Constitution. Understand the founding fathers philosophy that government is a necessary evil at BEST and that it should be extremely and severely LIMITED in scope. THEN you will understand WHY he says what he does. Asking what legislation he has championed is parroting the media because that is insinuating that in order to be a GOOD representative of the people, you need to MAKE LAWS all the time. That’s the messed up state of our mentality. Laws should only be created if absolutely necessary. REGULATION is not the natural STATE of things. If you REALLY want to know why Ron IS accomplished on the REAL terms of representing US and the Constitution, I suggest you read three things: Common Sense, The Constitution, and Ron Paul’s books (even just one of them like “The Revolution” will give you a good idea of his positions). Of course, if you are only interested in parroting the attacks of the media which have no relation to the real issues, then please go ahead and forget about educating yourself. Ron Paul’ 6 point plan to end immigration:
Physically secure our borders and coastlines. We must do whatever it takes to control entry into our country before we undertake complicated immigration reform proposals.
Enforce visa rules. Immigration officials must track visa holders and deport anyone who overstays their visa or otherwise violates U.S. law. This is especially important when we recall that a number of 9/11 terrorists had expired visas.
No amnesty. Estimates suggest that 10 to 20 million people are in our country illegally. That’s a lot of people to reward for breaking our laws.
No welfare for illegal aliens. Americans have welcomed immigrants who seek opportunity, work hard, and play by the rules. But taxpayers should not pay for illegal immigrants who use hospitals, clinics, schools, roads, and social services.
End birthright citizenship. As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be citizens, the incentive to enter the U.S. illegally will remain strong.
Pass true immigration reform. The current system is incoherent and unfair. But current reform proposals would allow up to 60 million more immigrants into our country, according to the Heritage Foundation. This is insanity. Legal immigrants from all countries should face the same rules and waiting periods.
If we would have listened to Ron Paul we would have gotten bin Laden in 2003 – he correctly predicted he was in Pakistan (there is a vid clip on youtube of him saying this on the house floor) and suggested that we do it differently – targeting him in small-scale attacks, not invade and occupy Iraq which had nothing to do with 9/11 – his plan would have been effective, saved TRILLIONS of dollars and THOUSANDS of innocent lives. He also voted YES to go to Afghanistan because he believed it was justified.

Andrew,
I wonder how much these pointless ’straw polls’ increase the total cost of elections and along the way distort the overall process.
Iowa meant nothing as bachmann has probably received all the votes she will get.
This nonsense in Perry is about as important as purdue’s annual quail hunt. A lot of chest thumping and dixie-whistling, but little attachment to who will be re-elected President.

3 votes, big deal. Considering the huge influence of the banking community, military industrial complex and other parasitical government fed industries in this state this is great news for the average citizen. Cain of course is just another pro-establishment type, former director of the KC Federal Reserve, and pro-empire candidate. That Ron Paul only lost by 3 votes shows that georgia republicans are finally coming around to understand the type of man that is needed to actually put forward the sound economic and foreign policy changes that will be needed to restore america. Great job Ron. You’ve got my family’s votes.

If Ron Paul finishes second in everyone else’s region of support, he’s sure to win !
I have gone in and out of being for and against Ron Paul many times. But each deeper exploration brought be back around again to wanting him in the White House……. I read the bills he submitted to Congress. Some troubled me, but I continued to hear him out all the way to see how all his pieces fit together…… NO candidate is going to be perfect. If they look perfect it’s a snow job, a public image, a pack of lies. Kennedy was on the level at times, Johnson was crap, Nixon evil and stupid, Bush same thing, all of ‘em a bunch of Bilderberg puppets. Obama is a pawn, but a good speaker…… No matter what, Ron Paul’s core tasks are farrrr better than the dems, and any other GOP, or any other candidate in my lifetime for that matter…. Let’s get RP in there and let him rock the boat. (it’s a sinkin’ ship anyway).

Between 1999 and 2009 federal spending in his Galveston district quadrupled to more than $4 billion.

Ron Paul votes against all the spending bills, but in the amendment stage tries to get as much back for his congressional district out of the total that is already set to be spent, as possible. It NEVER buys his vote for the underlying bill, because he NEVER votes for the underlying bill. Once a bill is passed as law of the land and money is committed, he does make sure the government spends it on the people who need it, and goes to bat for his constituents.
One commentator on a news program said ‘what if you are President and they won’t abolish the departments like you want, wont abolish these programs’ and he said, well at least a better manager could run them more effectively and efficiently. He is both ideologically correct, AND is that better, more representative, manager.

Hey Ron Paul (and Michelle Bachman in Iowa) folks:
Y’all go ask Gerry Purcell (ran for Insurance Commissioner in GA) and Melvin Everson (ran for Labor Commissioner in GA) how winning all of the Straw Polls across Georgia worked out for them in 2010.
Hint: Melvin lost about 30/70 and Gerry came in 4th place. (OK. Not really much of a hint. More of a spoiler).
The RP folks pointing at the 25 or 30 HC people that came in by bus are hillarious!
Check out these interesting tidbits from the RP’s own site:
“And the people behind rp2012.org did a GREAT job with their “below the radar” strategy of robocalls and tickets for RP supporters. WELL DONE.”
“We gave away about 120 tickets from our grassroots outreach efforts. ”
and the way they did it (also directly from RP website here http://www.dailypaul.com/175882/georgia-straw-poll-please-help ):
“Here’s how it works: [We] essentially invite Ron Paul supporters via a robocall. The person [we] call basically wins a free ticket to the straw poll IF they answer “Ron Paul” to the following question: “Do you know who has been called the champion of the Constitution and the taxpayer’s best friend ever?” If they get it right — they get a ticket.”

Well, maybe this is just me, but… if the RP people did earn free passes to vote in the straw poll or whatever… it’s not like they were forced at gunpoint to take them; I would imagine the thought process being, “Oh, I like this candidate, and look! This group of people is giving me the chance to show my support for the candidate for free! I think I’ll just take advantage of that; after all, in this economy, free is always a good price!” It would be different if they were forced into going to this thing, but I have a hard time thinking that the people would go if they didn’t want to go.

Does he or does he not support the ‘Constitution Party’? (careful, the facts are clear)
Does he or does he not oppose a woman’s unobstructed right to determine whether or not to bear a child? (again, this one is documented and not really open to debate).
Does he support or oppose public education as it is funded in this country? ( Nobody is asking about some artificial nonsense to replace public education, just whether he supports the current open access to schools as has been the law since Teddy Roosevelt was President).
Does he support taxation based on the obvious fact that those who gain the most (highest earners) have the greatest responsibility to keep the system funded. Put another way, does he accept that those who CONTROL the greatest amount of WEALTH have the clear responsibility to pay the freight as allocated to each dollar of that wealth? (I tried to limit the number of avenues to redirect and weasel out of that one).
Few people support the wholesale uprooting of Civilization to embark on some fools errand down a path that is known to fail. You are welcomed to your opinion, but be honest in portraying ron paul’s views of the world.

Do you support the right of a woman at 8.5 months pregnant to abort?
You are very confused on RP’s position on public education. Just because he is against the Department of Education doesn’t make him against public education. Do you support sending your money to Washington, having a big beaurocracy (DOE) take a huge chunck of that money to pay their hefty salaries and adminstrative costs and then send back to your state the scraps that are left in the form of “No child left behind”. What are the positive results that can be directly attributed to the DOE? I think most non-brainwashed Americans would agree that education has gone down hill since the DOE was formed in the early 1970’s. President Reagan campaign saying that getting rid of the DOE was a goal.
RP is against anyone paying income tax. Do you like paying income tax? All he is saying is that if you reduced the budget back to our national budget in 1985 we would not need the funds from the income tax to fund the budget. I remember 1985, I was 19, people were complaining and campaigning back then about how government was way to big.
Basically, RP believes government=waste. They never stay within budget on anything and the results of their efforts are 95% of the time very disappointing. If we give them less money there is less they can mess up. Makes sense to me.

Fewer Taxes for Real Economic Stimulus
by Ron Paul
Taxes are the issue this week as Americans struggle to make the April 15th deadline to file their returns. It is a good time to contemplate the effects of big government and what it does to our country. The income tax is one of the most egregious encroachments on our liberties today. It is a form of involuntary servitude, which was supposed to have been outlawed by the 13th Amendment.
Tax Freedom Day is defined as the day when the nation as a whole has theoretically earned enough income to fund its annual federal tax burden. For all of the days of the year before this day, you are a slave to government. For 2009, Tax Freedom Day will come on April 13th. Almost a century ago in 1910, before the mistakes of 1913-namely the inception of the Federal Reserve and our current income tax, Tax Freedom Day was January 19th, signifying a mere 5% tax burden. Somehow, our country functioned just fine.
If calculated to include government spending and the deficit, rather than just collections, Tax Freedom Day would actually fall on May 29. The annual deficit adds to the growing debt of future generations and adds insult to injury to those that struggle to make this economy work. It is a slap in the face that this is not enough to prevent this crushing governmental burden from falling on the next generation.
For months now, Washington has been desperately throwing taxpayers’ money at various programs to stimulate us out of the recession, to no avail. Seeing hard-earned money confiscated from the people and spent in such wasteful ways, such as the recent bailouts, is almost too much to bear. Getting rid of the income tax altogether, while very beneficial, may be a while in coming. In the meantime, I am fighting for every tax cut or tax credit possible.
I can think of no better economic stimulus than letting people keep their money and spend it how they see fit. For this reason, I am an original cosponsor on a bill that would give Americans a two month employment and income tax holiday, while taking unused TARP money back from the Secretary of the Treasury and putting it in the Social Security trust fund instead.
In addition, I have recently introduced the Child Health Care Affordability Act. If passed this legislation would provide parents with a tax credit of up to $500 for health care expenses of dependent children. I have also re-introduced the Tax Free Tips Act, which would make tips exempt from federal income and payroll taxes. I am also an original cosponsor of a bill that would make permanent the deduction of state and local sales taxes. My bill HR 162 exempts Social Security benefits from income tax.
These are just a few of the many tax related bills I am fighting for in Congress, but without a corresponding cut in the size of government, which I am also fighting for, we are simply adding to the future tax burden of our children

Ron Paul can, and with our efforts will, win the Republican nomination. Anyone who says he simply “won’t” or “can’t” is simply wrong or doesn’t understand how this system actually works. Hillary was the Democratic leadership’s choice, and look who became the nominee, and then President, based solely on the power of the vote, the grassroots and his supporters. The corporate establishment simply looks to get 26% of the 50% or so of Americans who actually vote. Many of the most consistent voters are over 60 and have very minimal exposure with the internet, and thus name exposure via CNN and Fox and the news papers is even more key. This IS why they’re so obviously and strategically omitting Ron Paul. Their under-coverage can be matched and exceeded by the power of we the people, the power of community, and the power of ideas. Word of mouth is THE most effective form of spreading ideas. Ron Paul’s popularity consistently rises in direct correlation with his exposure. In my humble opinion, Dr. Ron Paul’s ideas are the cure to this country’s woes, on everything from the ending of the costly endless wars for private profit (note: he has more support from our troops than all of the other republicans COMBINED and more than Obama), auditing/phasing out the federal reserve which devalues our currency as it secretly prints trillions of dollars to hand to foreign banks, to the reforming of common sense business rules and regulations, freeing the markets for innovation and efficient competition, the legalization of marijuana/hemp (hemp being a prime ethanol source, with any drug abuse seen as medical not criminal), to removing predatory corporate influence from the federal government and breaking up the various costly arrays of market-choking industrial complexes, and returning to the constitution and vision of liberty this country was founded on.
Once again, it will take our efforts.
Talk about Ron Paul.. As Jessica put it, one friend and family member at at a time. Encourage Democrats, Independents, and others you know to register Republican if your state’s rulings require a party membership to vote in the Primaries. Movements like “Blue Republican” (become a Republican for a year for Ron Paul) are growing to help with this. Coordinate with local Tea Party groups and help us reclaim the movement for the cause of the guy whose grassroots started it all.
Discuss Ron Paul’s ideas, and engage in conversations to clear up any distorted perceptions about some of his stances. Spread the message. This is a revolution of ideas, in a time of potential great change in the birth of the information age.
Cheers!

“Last Man Standing” – stop asking to be spoonfed and go to the candidates web site and read where he stands on the issues.. This might not work with Perry or Romney or the others but Paul has decades of writing and speeches to investigate. his message is consistent and logical throughout.
So, you’ve asked a lot of questions and now you have some reading to do but I have a question of my own first; Why don’t you believe in liberty? What do you have against Freedom?

The Following is What is Different and Better About Ron Paul Over All Others:
He has never taken a government junket.
He does not participate in the lucrative Congressional Pension Program.
He returns a portion of his annual Congressional Office Budget every
year.
He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He voted no to the bankster bailout.
He voted no to raising the debt ceiling and warned us against
the “Super Congress” part of the legislation that resembles both
an “ Enabling Act” and a “Politburo.”
He has never voted to restrict gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise Congressional Pay.
He never voted to increase Executive Branch Power.
He will Reinstate The Constitution and Save The Republic
He will END the unconstitutional FED.
He will phase out the unconstitutional IRS beginning immediately
He will secure the borders
He will limit Big Government in your private affairs
He will stop Illegal immigration and no amnesty
He voted against regulating the Internet
He is the only candidate for President in 2012 who actually served his country.
He was a flight surgeon during Vietnam.
Ron Paul’s popularity is so high among U.S. service members that the Texas
Congressman’s presidential campaign has received more money from U.S.
soldiers than any other candidate in the 2012 presidential race.
http://www.thestatecolumn.com/…
He voted against the Iraq War and warned us against going forward with
an undeclared war.“Let it not be said that no one cared, that
no one objected once it´s realized that our liberty and wealth are in
Jeopardy” July 10th, 2003
He voted against the unconstitutional and un-patriotic misnomered so called “Patriot Act”.
He supports a non-interventionist foreign policy yet a strong defense
He will end the inflation tax He is a true Constitutional
Conservative
He would have soundly beat Obama in 2008 because Independents trust him and like him.
We could have had a V8 instead of McCain´t in 08
Ron Paul for President 2012
Because no one else can be trusted to say what he means and do what he says like Ron Paul does.
Ron Paul is the man of the hour. They used to laugh him for being way ahead
of the others in his thinking and his warnings. Now, they are not
laughing because what he predicted is coming to pass. Now, he is being called
a prophet for having warned us and still calmly suffered through the
barbs. “First they, ignore you, then they fight you, then you
win.” Gandhi
“I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no
vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of
justice is no virtue!” Barry Goldwater”
When fascism goes to sleep it looks under the bed for Ron Paul.
Senator Barry Goldwater´s son, former Congressman Barry
Goldwater Jr. endorses Ron Paul. Ron Paul has been warning us for
so long of the impending economic disaster we are seeing today,
and he has been purposefully working to wake us to realize we
must change our course to save the Republic. I take Ron Paul
very seriously. He may not be the most polished public speaker,
but he speaks the truth with unvarnished power; He needs no
teleprompter to carry on an intelligent discourse for over two hours to a packed auditorium of twenty and thirty something voters! He may not be the tallest, or the most strikingly handsome candidate, he doesn´t have “pretty hair” but people want the Real Deal. Ron Paul is the real deal.

Just imagine: Ron Paul debating Obama in front of the World. :]
Despite what the corporate media and the assorted blogging ‘personas’ might attempt to continually tell you, he has the most electability of any candidate facing Obama. His record of 11 term re-election in Congress speaks for itself. He came in 3rd in the national election in ‘88. Now, Paul rallies the independent and “typically non-voter” votes that the comprehensive analysts agree were so key in the last election. The Primaries are key here. If we can give him the nomination, we can give him the Presidency. In most match-up Polls Paul does better against Obama than any other candidate. He captures the anti-war vote from Obama, which is still a major issue for most Americans. He has a real understanding of our economy. And he talks about the Federal Reserve, something former employee Herman Cain won’t do. All things the other contenders don’t really have. And he just passed Bachmann in the latest Gallup poll, continuing to move upwards as number 3. Despite the minimal media coverage, (and the FEMA statements are completely in his favor here, if people can understand them)
The Revolution continues to GROW!

FreeMktMonkey: that’s the way some people act when they are tired of being ignored like paul supporters have been for years.
LMS: Paul was a career doctor, but I can see that it’s easy to confuse somebody whose been in office for a while because they want to make a difference with a career politician. one way to make the distinction is that he’s declined to participate in the congressional pension and sends unused money form his office budget back to the treasury.

Ron Paul is a Republican Congressman who has been elected as such for 11 terms. He is not running as a Libertarian. Entitlements: He would on DAY ONE begin to end these wars (all 5 of them!!) and bring the troops home from all around the world. He receives more donations from active military then all the other candidates combined. He was drafted during Vietnam and served as a flight surgeon for 5 years. He has stated over and over that the money used to continue these needless wars would be used to shore up social security, medicare etc. He has stated over and over he would reopen the bases that were closed here at home (the closings devastated local economies that relied on the bases for taxes, local business and civilian jobs), and use our troops to guard our borders and ports . To work on our infrastructure. He would halt foreign aide. He would pay down the national debt by freezing spending at last years rate. We live within our means, why shouldn’t the government? If we did this we would be debt free in 5 years. And yes, he would drastically shrink the size of the federal government giving the control back to the STATES where it belongs. Example: Dept. of argriculture and Education. We should decide how to educate our children. Isn’t that what school boards are elected to do? How about the right to drink raw milk? We could get into the Patriot Act, The Federal Reserve, the Dept. of Homeland Security. That has to go. I mean really, what are the FBI, CIA, ATF, for? How about getting groped at the airport? How’s that working out for you? Along with Bailouts, failed stimulas etc. The right for Sates to decide on Medicinal Marijuana. Ron has introduced bills on Medical Marijuana, Traverler’s Diginity Act, Raw Milk Act. I could go on all day. Do your reasearch. Really look at what this humble Doctor, son of a PA dairy farmer, has stood for and championed the last 3 decades.

A dose of reality for all (based upon the comments by all of the RP folks, it appears that they already believe that drugs have been legalized). See my post back at around 168 for why I have subtracted 25 from Cain (Bused in) and 120 from Paul (I actually think this is a low number to subtract but giving the other 109 the benefit of the doubt that they didn’t accept welfare in order to attend the Fish Fry).
Straw Poll (adjusted for inflation):
– Herman Cain, 207 or 28 percent;
– Rick Perry, 179 or 24 percent;
– Newt Gingrich, 162 or 22 percent;
– Ron Paul, 109 or 15 percent;
– Mitt Romney, 51 or 7 percent;
– Michele Bachman, 29 or 4 percent;
– Others, 8 or 1 percent;

But I do question the supporter’s use of a welfare-like system for getting folks to show up and vote for RP at the Fish Fry.
Is it y’all’s (RPers’) contention that the parasites that are leaching off of the Federal Government on welfare are perfectly legitimate for doing so, as long as they can answer a question asked of them in a robocall? And that we as the rest of the citizens of the country should put a bunch of weight into what those leaches’ positions are simply because they were given free lunch(es)?
That is EXACTLY what you are contending by suggesting that we all should think that it was significant that RP came in second in a straw poll in which 120 individuals were paid to go (they got free lunch and a t-shirt, sounds like they got paid to go to me!).

He’s news. Now report, you establishment cowards.
I don’t care for Herman Cain’s policies, either, but the pizza at his Godfather’s chain has always been top-notch, when you can find one outside of a gas station anyway. There was a franchise off Sixes Road north of Woodstock a few years ago and that was a pretty good pie.

Herman Cain’s support of the FairTax is my litmus test for a candidate. The FairTax would allow the individual to choose when and how much taxes she wants to pay for the government that she gets. The income tax is nothing but a claim of ownership on everything you do, you create, you earn and you accrue.
With an income tax, your money is SEIZED.
With the FairTax, your tax is PAID!
One imposes an involuntary lien on all that you create and the “Massah” in Washington dictates just how much they want to extract from their slaves. This can be confirmed by the way our Gov’t refers to tax cuts as SPENDING THEIR MONEY.
Please support the candidates that Support the FairTax… those are the only candidates that truely believe in freedom and responcibility.

The Fair Tax is a well thought out and badly needed solution to taxation methods. It is a common sense approach that would tax everyone fairly, including those accumulating money via illegal means. It is perfect. It will never happen.
It will never happen because the lobbyists working for tax breaks for their employees will fight it. Those who benefit from the current loopholes will fight it. The IRS will fight it. Finally, the federal government itself will fight it. The tax code now is so voluminous and the regulations/rules so ambibuous that the government has the upper hand. What they determine not taxable for you today could be taxable for me tomorrow. It is what they want it to be.
Great idea, but it will never happen.

Romney’s performance is a reminder that his religion will always make him a hard sale in the south and no Republican can win the general election without winning the South. Georgia already leans much more heavily toward Obama than it has done for previous Democrats. That’s partly because of the large African-American population. If the Republicans send a Mormon nominee with a history of left-leaning programs such as RomneyCare in Massachussetts we might as well just hand over the win.

We cannot afford another President that is in bed with the big banks. While Herman Cain seems like a decent man, the truth is he’s another big bank president. Rick Perry is just plain evil. I wouldn’t buy a used car from the guy. Just google “Perry and gardisil”.
Ron Paul was first ignored by the media and now is being vilified at every oppurtunity The reason is that he is NOT in bed with the banks or the corporations that run the media. He has integrity and cannot be bought. He stands for sound money (big banks hate that), the Constitution (corporations that buy political influence hate that), and a strong national defense. He receives more support from our men and women in uniform than any other canidate for a reason.

Wow Hannah.
Do you have proof of all these wild allegations? Can you give me an example of “Crazy Talk”?
What is funny to me is the way all the non Ron Paul supporters bad mouth and call Ron Paul supporters names. For every one negative comment from a Ron Paul supporter their are 10 nonsensical ad hominem comments from others.
Ron Paul supporters know the issues and speak to them in their comments. All I see from the other commenters is “He is crazy”, “wing-nut”, “3 time loser”…that last one I really find humorous. He is a 12 time winner in congress. Reagan lost 2 times before winning. To me it shows the influence of the MSM. If Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh say he is crazy…I have to repeat it even if I don’t understand his positions.
I would happily debate anyone commenting on this blog on any of the issues. It does not seem like you want to talk about the issues, just make ad hominem attacks.

Paul was is an “air force veteran.” He was a flight surgeon. Just a doctor in uniform, not a fighter.

“Ron Paul is a career politician.”
Mr. Last Man Standing, if that is true, why does he have an M.D. after his name, and not a JD or MBA?

liberalefty:
I was wrong. The following from factcheck.com:
But the program isn’t the brainchild of President Barack Obama. The program was created by Congress in late 2000 under President Bill Clinton, and the first grants were announced under President George W. Bush in 2001. The State Department says that, in total, the fund has contributed nearly $26 million to approximately 640 cultural heritage sites in more than 100 countries, and more than half was given before Obama took office.
It’s true that mosques are among the cultural sites that have received grant money under this program. But temples and churches around the world also have received funding, contrary to AFA’s claim that the “secular left” would be upset if “these monies had been spent to repair Christian churches.” When we searched the State Department’s database and lists of 2009 and 2010 projects for “mosque” and “minaret,” we found that 30 mosques or minaret restoration projects had received funding under Bush, and seven such sites had been funded under Obama. Also, 29 projects for churches and cathedrals were funded under Bush and 13 under Obama. Those totals do not represent all Christian or Islamic historical and cultural sites, however — our search for “mosque,” for instance wouldn’t pull up funding for an Islamic monument or conservation of ancient manuscripts, and our search for “church” didn’t pull up restoration of convents or monasteries. Plus — as anyone who has visited the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul or the Mezquita, a mosque and cathedral in Cordoba, Spain, could tell you — there are many ancient sites that were Islamic and Christian places of worship at different points in time. In fact, our searches of “mosque” and “church” both pulled up the $33,455 awarded to the 14th century Mosque of Old Dongola in Sudan, which was a church in the 9th century. And one of the “cathedral” projects in Uganda under Bush was the documentation of “historic buildings,” including “cultural sites, unique architectural designs, cathedrals, Hindu temples, mosques, state buildings and ancestral homes,” according to the State Department database.

Ron Paul tied with Herman in Herman’s own state? How’s that workin’ for ya, Herm? It’s the unstoppable tide of the Liberty!
Will Herman take a stand to abolish the Fed? Will Herman restore the country to sound money? Neither will Michelle or any of the rest.
As much as I like about Herman Cain’s persona, I find his association with his former employer to be a major drawback. So that’s not workin’ for me.
To say that Herman or Michelle won is like saying the ‘possums won because, they ran up a tree. The Partisans of Liberty are coming after the varmint nominalist Republican’ts to finish the job. Ron Paul is definitely my dog in this hunt! And he’s workin’ just fine, for me!

Well let’s see.
Who will bring the troops home?
Who will cut the budget by half a trillion first day?
Who will prevent the million murders a year our government currently performs?
Who can free me from being accountable to my Creator for all those deaths?
Who will do their best to get the Patriot Act repealed?
Who really cares about ME, and truly believes that I own myself, NOT the government?
Who admits the dollar is now worth less than 2% of what it originally was?
Who wants to stop the current policy of robbing seniors by keeping interest rates artificially low?
Who wants to end the War on Drugs and use that money to actually HELP people?
You don’t need me to tell you to Vote Vertebrate to know which man in the room has the spine.

One thing I like to do is put a lot of thought into my comments, so that I need only make one…and make it clear. Speaking of career politicians, What we have in Ron Paul is a career candidate. Remember Ralph Nader? That’s what he was…or still maybe, it’s still early yet. Ron Paul reminds me a lot of him. I like all the answers Ron Paul provides for our ailing constitution. But I just don’t believe the consternation is in his gut to move and shake things as needed. Also Ron seems a bit fuzzy on some topics, and on others, his answers are just too doggone simple for the complicated and menacing obstacles that criss-cross our government.
Herman is real. He didn’t come on the scene to gain attention. I’ve known about him for years. I’m supporting him till the end. I won’t go into what I think is right or wrong about him to you Ron Paul supporters….it would help you to quit dissing Herman Cain though, and view a few of his speeches online (mostly to educate yourselves), before you start plucking all the flowers and letting the weeds proliferate.

Ron Paul has explained Why Austrian economics works to the satisfaction of millions or registered voters – so well I have personally spent thousands of dollars helping bring his dream to fruition. What has been touched upon less frequently is WHY we should give it a chance instead of continuing down the Keynesian road to serfdom. You may be unaware that one earner could support quite a large family when we were on the gold standard – it is only the ‘progress’ we’ve experienced that makes it so a home with two wage earners can still be below the poverty line. You may also be unaware that since the FED was established in 1913, the dollar (formerly 1/20 ounce of gold) is now 1/1800 ounce of gold. That’s right, the value of a dollar has decreased 90 TIMES. There are more people on food stamps now than there were wage earners in 1913. The number of unemployed is over 22% (shadowstats.com). Where in these numbers do you see a shining ray of hope that we are doing the correct thing? These numbers could hardly be worse, even given some national disaster. They’re the result of us applying the Keynesian methodology (stimulus and deficit spending) – we’ve been doing it since 1971. That’s when we went off the gold standard, which made this spending possible. Trillions of dollars in stimuli have NOT worked. Now it’s time to try something different so we can verify experimentally which course of action is the correct one. You can’t know until you compare.
