Atlanta police sergeant: ‘Gays more violent than heterosexuals’

My AJC colleagues Rhonda Cook and Angel Brooks have the full story here, but when it comes to how Atlanta cops justified frisking an entire bar full of gay patrons, look at these paragraphs from an executive summary of the Greenberg Traurig report, drawn up by Attorney Daniel Grossman, attorney for the Atlanta Eagle:

The report concluded that patrons of the Eagle were forced to lay face-down on the floor during the Raid in part because of anti-gay prejudice on the part of Raid commander Sgt. John Brock. The report concluded: “By allowing the sexual orientation of the patrons to influence tactical decisions of the Raid, Brock allowed his preconceived notions of a class of persons to dictate the treatment of individuals.” (GT report, pp. 143-144.)

In describing his belief that gay people are more violent than heterosexuals, Brock stated: “In the past I have as a patrol officer handled calls where there are gay couples living in residence where one is mad at the other, and they slash clothes, furniture, anything they can do. They’re very violent.” (GT report, pp. 142-143.) When asked if he thinks “that the gay community is more violent than other citizen groups” Brock replied: “My experience, yes. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, when they’re — when they get mad, they get really mad.”

“…gay people are more violent than heterosexuals…”

If this were true, shouldn’t we be encouraging homosexuals to be in the military instead of trying to push them out?

What outrageous violations of liberty by these officers.

This is not prejudice based on preconceived notions. It is a considered judgment based on extensive personal experience. While I have no personal experience in this area, the conservative news sources that I follow regularly report on terrible violence by homosexuals. Without fail the mainstream news media refuses to report these incidents. There is your prejudice based on preconceived notions, prejudice refusing to be informed by the facts.

“…the conservative news sources that I follow regularly report on terrible violence by homosexuals.” Cherry-picking, perhaps? Your hypocrisy is showing.

Well this guy guy has no idea wtf Brock is talking about. Maybe he’s confusing us gays with blacks for violence. RIght? THat’s not racist. Just based on observation of arrests and photos plastered on AJC every day.

Wasn’t this Red Dog police group the SAME one that busted into an elderly woman’s home confusing it for another in a drug raid, shot her and then PLANTED evidence?

Classy acts.

Just wondering how many “is that a half pack of Tums in your pocket, or are you just happy to frisk me” during the raid?

That’s like saying the only black people I know are the ones I arrest for drug offenses, so all black people are drug dealers…

The police should deal with threats, not imaginary boogey men. This was a bad operation, bad police work.

OK, I am still laughing. Seriously. Sgt. Brock, one of “the gays” is only going to get that mad and violent with you if you if he catches you sleeping with his boyfriend.

Bigotry, prejudice and stero-typing have no place in a police department — especially in management as Sgt. John Brock appears to be.

Those who lied, thwarted the investigation or misled those conducting the inquiry should be fired regardless of rank or seniority.

In my experience, people being unlawfully harassed by gun-toting bigots tend to be unhappy about it–a lot more so than people who are let alone. And not just sometimes, I mean like all the time. In my experience.

He’s describing a typical domestic dispute. They’re not pretty no matter what the sexual preference of the people involved. In this case, it looks as if he was just afraid he might catch teh ghey on contact…which CAN happen, if you’re predisposed.

He thinks slashing clothes and furniture is violent? Has he never been on a domestic violence call where heterosexual men beat, slash, break bones and sometimes kill women? Don’t get me wrong, DV is violent with gay couples too, but because heteros are the majority of people, they are also the majority of DV cases, and most of the time, the perp is the male.

I’ve carpooled with three different evangelical Christians. Each one insisted the carpool conform to his/her personal schedule. Therefore, in my experience, all evangelical Christians are selfish.

Last time I check there were more females getting beat up or murdered by their male significant other. Homosexual tearing up each others property or clothes doesn’t rise to the level of bodily injuries. On any give day some woman is being maimed, set a fire, rape or killed by a man. This policeman has definitely lost touch of the real world. What a lame statement to make. This is the 21st century gay people are everywhere even in the APD.

@E Ruffin – You “fail to understand”, that’s for sure. The police were not “right” since the supposed purpose of the raid at The Eagle was to arrest people for illicit sex and drugs. Guess what? NO arrests for sex OR drugs. The trumped-up charges they made against the employees arrested were subsequently thrown out. The city was sued and settled the lawsuit for about a million bucks. Is that what you consider “being right”? Most of us citizens consider that just plain sloppy police work and inexcusable behavior.

Religions and gods have always been created out of fear of the unknown (primarily death) and the inability to explain the things people could not understand… my experience.

June 30th, 2011

@E. Ruffin: you want to live in a community where the cops can bust into an establishment and make every law abiding citizen lie face down on the floor? Even the most raging homophobe should be bothered by that idea. We have certain rights in this country, one of which is that the government doesn’t get to force you to lie on the ground and go through your pockets unless they have a really good reason.

Yet somehow, our prisons nationwide are filled with angry, violent heterosexual men. Obviously, the law enforcement hasn’t been looking for the real perpetrators of violence in our society. Oh, and just ignore all the women who are beaten, raped, or killed by their heterosexual lovers and/or family. And all the drug dealers armed to the teeth. And, for that matter, angry hetero cops with an ax to grind.

WHAT? No biblical passages from Leviticus? No “gays are filthy and going to hell” proclamations? No hijacking of the initial gist of the post to excoriate all gays under the guise of Christianity?

This is unprecedented in AJC blog history, I tell you. A blogger mentions gays and most respondents stick to the actual conversation, and as an added extra plus, the bible-thumpers have not felt the need to illuminate us heathens with their “truth.”

I am in shock. Maybe you guys are growing up!

This is true. I always see knock down, drag-out fights in front of gay bars… It’s like an epidemic of hostile, chiffon spewing, drugged up queens hitting each other with furniture and decorations. Is this guy insane? I get it that gays will get violent and angry…You think? The people that go to the gym everyday and are oppressed minorities? You THINK they might get a little violent when pushed? On another note: I have seen more than a few lesbians fight in front of bars, one in which 5 Atlanta police officers, 4 firefighters and multiple ambulances were stuck in the middle of a violent argument in which women were throwing beer bottles at the cops and escalating in to beating on the cops. I know what they were afraid of at the Eagle…They were afraid they might like it, if the guys got a little violent…. The should be so lucky, I suppose. What a bunch of PANSIES, the APD

Even tho the worst cases ive heard lately were black men pouring gas on their women and lighting them up, i trust the officers experience and word. After all, i was personally almost killed 5 times while a cable man in Atlanta in the last decade. It was never a mexican, never a indian, never a asain, EVERY time it was a black man, under the age of 35. Some think me saying that is racist, but i all i can do is report the facts.

The “gays are more violent” than heterosexuals is a myth perpetuated by anti-gay forces for decades. It’s up – or rather down there with the old myth about gays being child predators or even worse Newt Gingrich stating that gay marriage will destroy the institution of marriage. Of course Newt’s doing a pretty good job of that on his own.

Thanks Mr. Galloway for exposing these clowns. They bring shame to a fine profession that deserves the utmost respect for its memebers who uphold its standards.

Fox News covers parents who kill their children pretty extensively. Therefore, parents are mostly murderers.

Reality is APD has learned nothing from their mistakes a few years ago. This so-called investigation should not have took over 6 months. APD and Chief Turner were simply trying to find a way to sweep their own misdeeds under the rug. And I suspect Chief Turner and his minions will continue to do so. I see no meaningful reform of the APD thugs anytime in the near future. Brock and a dozen other APD thugs would have been fired had they treated blacks the same as they did gays. But nothing will actually come of this investigation. Chief Turner is as bigoted as Brock when it comes down to it.
