Your morning jolt: Is Fox News biased against certain Republicans?
During the state GOP convention in Macon last weekend, a number of Republicans complained of bias in the national media.
Which normally would be as newsworthy as declaring water to be wet. Except that the complainers were Herman Cain supporters, and the object of their discontent was Fox News.

The cable TV network was ignoring the Cain campaign in favor of old friends who served as professional commentators, they charged.
This spring, Fox News suspended, then terminated, its contracts with former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich and former U.S. senator Rick Santorum, both of whom were considering GOP presidential runs.
But how to measure pro-Gingrich or anti-Cain bias? Why, you call Media Matters, the liberal organization that closely monitors Fox News. Spokeswoman Jess Levin provided a tally of Fox News appearances by possible GOP candidates between Jan. 1 and May 13 – the day before Cain’s speech to Georgia Republicans in Macon.
The results might surprise you. Cain actually made more appearances on Fox News than either Gingrich or Santorum. Though not as many as Donald Trump or Michele Bachman.
Mitt Romney was close to the bottom – mostly likely the result of his under-the-radar strategy.
Mike Huckabee, who bowed of the GOP contest on Saturday, topped all – but his tally includes episodes of his weekly Fox News show. Here’s the total:

On the Newt Gingrich front, AJC’s Politifact Georgia takes a look at Newt Gingrich’s declaration to Republicans in Macon last week that Barack Obama is the “food stamp president.”
And the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank issues a spirited defense of Gingrich as a needed voice of Republican moderation.

Also in today’s Washington Post, reporters Phil Rucker and Lori Montgomery include this passage about the collapse of the Gang of Six effort at negotiating a federal deficit deal:
[U.S. Sen. Saxby] Chambliss suggested Tuesday that the group, at the very least, owes its Senate allies a report on its work.
Those close to the talks said trouble has been brewing for weeks. Earlier this month, the group appeared to be tantalizingly close to an agreement. But then, Democratic sources said, [U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.] started bringing up new issues at every meeting, or demanding that old ones be reconsidered.
For example, Coburn began pressing for sharper cuts to Social Security than had been previously agreed to, according to sources familiar with the talks who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the negotiations. And during a three-hour session late Monday, the sources said, Coburn demanded deep and immediate cuts to Medicare that went beyond anything previously proposed.
On Tuesday morning, Coburn called Durbin to say he was dropping out. He later told reporters that the group was at an “impasse” and complained that Democrats were unwilling to do enough to cut spending, particularly on federal retirement programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

But now I’m told the negotiations between the city and Jamestown are over and both sides are ready to sign on the line that is dotted. And yet, the whole deal could still go kablooey this week if the federal government doesn’t approve $15 million in tax credits that the city and the developer have already agreed to.

I only offer the other side of leftist AJC blogging – I don’t care for the right wing of the GOP, Trump, Huckabee, or Gingrich. I’ve defended Obama’s personal integrity from right wing posters – but don’t agree with all of his politics which gets me slammed by BOTH political extremes here.

Media Matters seems to be the only site that really monitors what Fox says. Their coverage of what they view as not “Fair and Balanced” is pretty straight.
Having grown up in the Midwest, i find the description of the AJC as leftist amusing. Corporate shills, yes; leftist, not so much.

Saxby Chambliss and his “gang” want to cut the debt. But they don’t want to cut the profits of the big oil companies with a windfalls tax because that might hurt their real allies: big business. Who pays for Saxby’s campaign? Big business. When will Republican voters who aren’t corporation CEO’s learn that they are voting again their own interests????? And remember Republican Nathan Deal? Approved tax breaks for Delta (campaign supporter) and rejects holding off 3-cents-per-gallon increase in the state gasoline tax. Oh yeah, he’s really for the little folks, isn’t he???

Hazel, if you don’t realize the AJC slants left (even in news coverage) you need to seek help. The AP slants left, so how can the AJC not??? That’s not necessarily a criticism, just a reality.
I’ll give you one glaring example that has stuck in my mind over the years – the AJC ran a profile on Reagan, highlighting his firing of the striking air traffic controllers but FAILING TO NOTE the strike was illegal. That is bias, in black-and-white. Give me time and I could find a million other examples.
Now to the topic at hand. I’m a conservative and I watch Fox News. Fox clearly is slanting its coverage of presidential candidates to (1) the perceived front-runners, and (2) the people working with or friendly to Fox News. Cain has suffered in the early going because the preconceived story line out of South Carolina was Pawlenty and who wasn’t there. They are catching up, but they are no different than other media outlets in their scripting of story lines, only different in the agenda and perspective. Given that most other media outlets on TV have gone out of their way to offend me at one time or another (or daily, in many cases), I’ve tuned them out.

Things change. Reagan was once considered a conservative, now look at his record, he comes off as a flaming liberal. Reagan raised taxes, increased the deficit, gave amnesty to millions of “ILLEGALS,” and created a new big government cabinet level department.

Hazel, I grew up in the Midwest. I attended a State University and graduated from a private University there. I go back there to visit friends and relatives regularly. I know the pulse of the Midwest, and I know the pulse of my friends and neighbors here in Georgia.
The biggest differences are the much larger union presence in the midwest, the more intense racial segregation that remains there to this day, and the Catholic vs. Baptist social influences. Your average Democrat and Republican in Missouri are not much different than here in Georgia, except that half the Republican party here has fled over from the Dems and not so much up there. I can tell you the leading newspapers in the midwest are every bit as disgusting in their leftist bias as is the AJC. I can also tell you there are a lot of Democrats in Congress from the Midwest who are in big trouble in the upcoming election.

Here is the reality. The media is biased. The left has the AJC, MSNBC & NYT. The right has Fox, WSJ and Washington Post. There are very few media outlets that are truly unbiased today. Therefore, I read NYT and the WSJ to get a more complete picture to form my opinions.

News media and the “infotainment” it provides is controlled by corporate, advertising dollar$. The days of independent reporting are long over.
You have to digest news from several sources and and come up with your own result. Don’t look to the TV to inform or show you any kind of “reality”.

The AJC on line has Bookman & Tucker on the left side and Wingfield, Barr & Wooten on the right.
Fairly balanced except Bookman turns out more work than the others combined.
The editorial page writers are mainly left. The reporters are basically a combination of left and right.
But I would suspect that a review of all journalism school graduates would suggest that like most graduates of the “liberal arts” side of the college curriculum, the journalism graduates are more left leaning.

The AJC is a logical place to get local news (and sports), but culprits and police will be given equal standing. Anything to do with politics will be slanted left. Most intelligent readers understand this, and discount the bias like they do with the other media outlets.
As stated by “Amazing”, “DannyX”, “John”, and “Real Athens” above – also reading Fox, WSJ, and Drudge links, etc. will often give you the other side to get the centrist gist of national news and politics.

As a frequent FNC watcher, I learned about Cain watching FNC a couple of weekends ago. They recently interviewed him and Chris Wallace also had an interview with him as well. By the way, I would vote for Herman if the election was held today. I don’t know what the deal about FNC is except certain people don’t like them, like anyone who hates the truth and facts.

You want a ‘windfall profits tax’? Go for it. Oil Companies have thinner margins than most industries – far less than the pro-democrat technology companies, particularly Google. I just want that tax to be even handed. Guess who owns those oil companies? Teachers, union members, investors and probably yourself if you have any type of retirement plan that is professionally managed be it in a mutual fund or a fund manager like CALPERS. They are owned in these things called public shares in blocks of $30 or $40 per share. And again, the margins for Google or almost any silicon valley company are far fatter than the oil companies. There’s just a lot more shareholders of the oil companies. Know what happens when you tax those oil companies? They do what most anybody else would do – pass those increased costs along to the public so that they can maintain their responsibilities to their shareholders and try to maintain their quarterly dividend. Furthermore, many will relocate their operations to the UK or Canada where the tax burden is lower, again which is showing their corporate responsibility tot heir shareholders. If you want lower fuel prices, stop stirring up tensions in the Middle East, stop issuing drilling moratoriums and start opening up oil leases on Federal lands so we control our own energy supplies and stop begging these ruthless middle eastern governments to keep the spigots open.

The reason libs like you and the national mainstream media fear Herman Cain is because you know that a black GOP conservative would hammer Obama in a debate and….negate all the “racist” labels you love to throw around when conservatives say we dislike Obama’s policies, not the color of his skin. Unbiased media that we all pine for was an historical anomaly. After the end of WWII we, as a country, were working together and the newspapermen and other media had generally worked together against a common enemy, the Axis, and returned to this Country after the war with a common sense of purpose. That was then focused against the USSR in the cold war, and the anomaly continued through the 1960’s. Then, when we began to battle against ourselves – Viet Nam, Civil Rights, drug culture – the media then took one side or another. This returned us to the yellow journalism that was rampant from the dawn of this Country.
So quit complaining about bias in media, it is, was and has been the norm for centuries!
As for why the MSM leans to the left? They grew up on a diet of Sesame Street, Norman Lear sit-coms and music from the 60’s. The movies they grew up on are post 1968 and the enemy was always anyone against the left (ministers, authority, the military, etc.) and the hero leaned left. It is what the majority was spoon fed (not as a conspiracy, just what happened) and to think otherwise is to upset their world view, which people generally do not like, right, left or center.

Fox news is the mouthpiece of the neocon big government establishment wing of the republican party. If there was a bias against anyone it would be against Ron Paul because he is none of those things while the positions of virtually every other republican candidate are right in line with their status-quo objectives.
Thankfully there are freedom-promoting shows on Fox like Freedom Watch and Stossel so there is some real balance of opinion on the station.

Dictionary definition of a liberal: “not narrow in opinion or judgement, tolerant; favoring political and social reform.” Journalism should be the conscience of a nation. Journalism should be the watchdog for our liberties. That in itself should make good journalism liberal.
It was the AJC who exposed the cruelty and hypocracy of the Jim Crow Laws, and it was the AJC that was the conscience of Georgians during the civil rights struggle. American revolutionaries and Jeffersonian republicans were liberals. Most of the protesters of the “Arab Spring” in 2011 are liberals.
Seems to me that some want to derogatorily put a “liberal” label on any person or group that disagrees with their views.

Yes, but “liberal” is the tag word for those who consider themselves “Progressives”. While I agree with some of your propositions, the patriots were fiscal conservatives who were upset about too much taxation, so your analogy fails.
I believe a better argument is that Jesus was a “liberal” under your definition. He stood up to the authoritative Pharisees and Sadducees and invoked many a parable castigating the rich. However, he could also be seen as a fiscal conservative and social liberal, as he left the matters of money to Caesar and ate with Matthew the tax collector while he mainly focused on social issues.
A “Progressive” is someone who seeks to protect the masses (whom they view with contempt) to keep them fat and happy and out of the their lives.

Cain is currently at ZERO% less than a year away from most of the Republican primaries. Cain would have to leap frog 10 Republican candidates to win the election. Its not going to happen.
Cain’s biggest problem at this point is not Liberals or Dems, it’s reality.

I listen to alot of talk radio and some fox news when time allows. I’ve been thinking for a few weeks that the most watched shows are bias.
Certianly Huckabee gets the most play but he’s out. Hannity looks to be more loyal to Bachman, Romney(supported him last time), Santorum, and then Gingrich in my opinion.
Hannity has said that he’ll give equal time to all GOP candidates but we will see. Neal Bortz seems to be softening his opinions on Newt and has admitted that he really likes Cain but fears what the left will do to a great man. Don’t know about Rush???
I’m a Cain fan and tell everyone I know that he’s my man. He needs to be on Fox & Friends and every other show over the next few months to gain name recognition with independents and voters outside of the bible belt.
A black lady called into Bortz yesterday and said “it’s going to take a black man to beat a black man.” I certainly think a good candidate can beat Obama but you have to admit that Cain could fight fire with fire!!!!

Isakson seems to have forgotten that the housing bubble was fueled by highly leveraged credit default swaps and derivatives. These instruments were abused by Wall Street firms. It made them lots of money and then the scam failed due to a minute rise in the default rates.
Isakson tells the big-time lie that Fannie and Freddie caused the 2008 crash. They are great scapegoats due to the fact that they are dangerously bloated institutions with a history of corrupt accounting practices and other vices. But they did not cause the disaster. In fact Fannie Mae, like so many others foolishly took the bait that Wall Street put-out and in so doing, lost a ton of money.
Isakson should explain how he helped to bail-out the Wall Street firms that crashed our economy and then took their campaign donations.

Isakson says that Wall Street was only doing what Fannie and Freedie mandated. Wow, that’s a whopper! The best part of a lie like that is that there are a lot of people who believe it.
So, my hat’s off to Johnny Isakson for the best told lie of the day! Now, let’s see if he can take it up to the next level. I look forward to him warning us that Iran has WMD and is in league with Al Qaeda. Remember, George Bush still holds the national record for lies that have consequences.
