Your morning jolt: Newt Gingrich to announce Wednesday, via Facebook and Twitter
Georgia politics will be dominated by a trio of themes this week:
– Gov. Nathan Deal’s signing of HB 87, the illegal immigration bill;
– A tense race for the chairmanship of the state GOP, to be settled Saturday with the party convention in Macon;
Former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich/Associated Press
– And the arrival of the presidential campaign on our doorstep, through that partisan gathering in Macon.
A spokesman for Newt Gingrich, who is expected to announce his candidacy this week, confirmed today that reporters aren’t being directed to any brick-and-mortar location for the event.
Which leads one to suspect an Internet-based announcement that will point to Gingrich’s Friday evening speech in Macon at a Republican fund-raiser and a very friendly audience.
Updated at 10:45 a.m.: Rick Tyler, the Gingrich spokesman just sent a message saying candidacy announcement will come Wednesday, via Facebook and Twitter. An interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity will follow that night. The Georgia speech will be his first as a candidate.
Herman Cain, who’s receiving plaudits for his debate performance in South Carolina next week, will open the Saturday session of the GOP convention. No other presidential candidates are anticipated.

Newt Gingrich’s tangle of corporate ventures – some non-profit, some not – are often cited as a reason for his delayed entrance into the 2012 presidential contest.
A piece in today’s Wall Street Journal turns that argument on its head:
Now, as Mr. Gingrich prepares to launch a run for president as early as this week, this network of advocacy and for-profit groups is providing a publicity and policy machine without parallel among his likely Republican rivals, few of whom have stirred excitement among donors and activists.
His network has amassed more than 1.7 million voter and donor contacts and raised $32 million between 2009 and 2010—more than all his potential 2012 rivals combined.

In South Carolina on Saturday, Jon Huntsman Jr., the former U.S. ambassador to China, told a group of Republicans that he would make a decision on a presidential run by month’s end. From CNN:

One of those in the room, state Rep. Alan Clemmons, tweeted during the meeting that Huntsman said he “will be deciding over the next two to three weeks whether there is critical mass” to mount a White House campaign.
Huntsman is from Utah, and would give Republicans two candidates of the Mormon faith. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is the other. The Huntsman and Romneys know each other well.
As the weekend broke, a blog on Forbes.com posted an interview with Jon Huntsman Sr., a billionaire:
Forbes:Would Jr.’s campaign overlap too much with Mitt Romney’s? (Huntsman Sr. was co-chairman of Romney’s effort in 2008 and they all share the same Mormon faith.)
Huntsman Sr.: “Mitt and Jonny are third or fourth cousins. Mitt’s father was a dear and special friend to me when I was in the Nixon White house. But they are very different individuals. Jon Jr. is raising one his daughters as a Hindu [she's adopted from India]. He feels all people should exercise the faith of their heart. Also Jon’s issues are foreign policy.
“Put the two of them [Jr. and Romney] on the David Letterman Show and the public would think they are two very different people. One would arrive on a motorcycle and play the keyboard and have fun. It would be a fascinating campaign.”
In case you can’t figure out who would tickle some ivories, Huntsman Jr. once played for REO Speedwagon.

In a move sure to lead to speculation that he’s reconsidering his presidential potential, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal released a copy of his birth certificate.
The son of Indian immigrants, Jindal was born and raised in Baton Rouge.
That fact hasn’t been seriously disputed in any of Jindal’s races, but his office said it was releasing the birth document after inquiries about whether the governor would be affected by a bill introduced by U.S. Sen. David Vitter which would limit citizenship only to children of legal residents of the U.S.

Over at the Savannah Morning News, Larry Peterson found a group that has toted up much of the money collected by Georgia candidates in last year’s campaigns:
The $88 million total, tallied by the Montana-based National Institute on Money in State Politics, is low; some reports still are trickling in.
And it doesn’t reflect some independent outlays, such as the
$5.4 million one group [the Republican Governors Association] spent to help Republican Nathan Deal become governor.Even so, the institute said $33 million went to gubernatorial hopefuls; $20.4 million for legislative races, $15.4 million to party committees and $12.4 million for other statewide offices.

In Rhode Island, the Providence Journal reports that U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson had a cameo role in Senate approval of a federal judge last week:
With John J. McConnell still shy of the Republican votes he needed Wednesday to complete his long quest for a seat on Rhode Island’s federal court, his friend Jack Reed approached Johnny Isakson on the floor of the U.S. Senate, armed with a sheaf of photocopies in a neat manila folder.
As the clock wound down on the key vote to remove a final obstacle between McConnell and the judgeship, the Rhode Island Democrat handed his Georgia colleague a copy of a year-old letter from the office of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

I’ll be having some real fun this campaign season watching this idiot run for president. It is remarkable how some politicians feel this constant need to inflict themselves on others. It was time for Newt to have quietly into the sunset years ago, yet the GOP is so starved for ideas, any ideas, that Newt passes for a genius. I read he felt that history was calling him to run. I believe history got the wrong number if that was the message passed on the former Talker of the House. Please go away, Newt.

As a long time Republican and a fiscal and social conservative I am appalled at the poor quality of Republican candidates who are offering themselves for President. If this is the best our party can do it is time to fold it up. We have the choice of philanderers, incompetents, and fools who represent the rich who fund their campaigns at the expense of the middle class and the rest of us. Our country is sinking into the dust bin of history and instead of lifting us back up these jerks will only hasten the slide! Oh for a Ronald Reagan, Harry Truman, Ross Perpt type of candidate who would put the needs of the country ahead of special interest campaign dollars. God help the United States of America!

I caught some of that comedy roast in South Carolina this weekend. What a HOOT! It was almost as funny as last weekend’s WH Correspondent’s Dinner when the President handed Trump his behind on a cheap plastic poker-chip tray. Herman Cain is the only candidate that can take Obama to task on the issues at hand. He has solved and will solve numerous problems by thinking outside the box instead of the same old two and four that both parties have been hitting the citizens with over the last twenty years.
If you want Obama to win, the hope that Gingrich gets the ticket. If you want Obama to lose, then vote for Cain.

Speaker Gingrich was able to get most of his brilliant Contract With America implemented. Plus, the Congress’ most intelligent speaker was able to work with a Socialist-Democrat president to get the budget balanced. No one could say that about Nanny Pelosi, Jim Wrong or Tipsey O’Neill. Speaker Gingrich could be the country’s best president since Reagan. I’m still behind Herman Cain, but if Speaker Gingrich got the nomination, I would be on board.

Not that comments via this blog are indicative of even the GA electorate – only two above are positive toward Gingrich.
I think Gingrich is running for an appointed position or possibly VP – he has little chance at the nomination and much less at beating Obama. But he makes a VERY good living from politics and running for president will only help him more. He may be a lot of things (good and bad), and shrewd at making money is one of them.

So, Retired Soldier, only former Speakers of the House who resigned in disgrace can comment on Newt’s candidacy? That is an interesting interpretation of the First Amendment. It also only leaves JIm Wright available to talk on Newt, if he’s still alive.
Newt was wrong on Libya, after he was right. He is wrong when he says he wants no restrictions on political contributions. He’s wrong on the environment. He’s wrong in supporting lower corporate taxes when most huge corporations pay little or no tax as it is now. He was wrong in injecting an atmosphere of hostility and ugliness into the political debate twenty years ago. He is the source of the incivility that permeates the public discussion today. There, is that enough for you?

If he is not running I will still be writing him in and voting for him. Last Man Standing – We don’t need any more middle ground. It is the very middle that has destroyed this country. The belief that you can have your cake AND eat it too. That foreign adventurism equals defense. That its ok to spend on warfare so long as you are also spending on welfare. That so long as both parties agree everything is right with the world.
THERE ARE PRINCIPLES AND NOBODY IS FOLLOWING ANY.
You just want the easy way to resolving everything that our government has done to destroy us. Well, there isn’t an easy way. It will require sound economics and a sound currency. If that seems too far right for you then too bad. It will require defending this nation and stopping the military adventurism in over 170 foreign countries that we now engage in. If that sounds too far left for you then too bad. It will require us to end the war on drugs, restore freedom, and allow the productive non-violent citizens that occupy half of all prison cells to return to society and contribute to its success. I am not sure what that would sound too much of since virtually nobody seems to care about freedom and liberty anymore, but it is still the right answer and too bad if you are happy locking up people for doing you or anyone else NO HARM.
The problem is that neither the republicans NOR the democrates actually have any principles at all. You are constantly told that every answer could be right and that it is just a matter of opinion. Well it is not. A productive economy only works when it is free, just like the rest of us do.
Compromise is what got this country so screwed up in the first place. I only support candidates with sound principles, whether someone arbitrarily wants to pidgeonhole that idea as being too left or too right. If we actually had parties of principles we could elect one and actually see how their plans work out. Well, there is the Libertarian Party, but nobody ever seems to want to give their sound ideas a try. Better the devils that have destroyed this country I guess.
