Paul Broun condemns town hall question, ‘Who’s going to shoot Obama?’
U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, R-Athens, just issued a sharp condemnation of a constituent who, at a town hall meeting this week, raised the prospect of violence against President Barack Obama.
A spokesman for Broun also confirmed that his office contacted the Secret Service to report incident.
Broun’s relatively quick reaction is an indication of a changed climate since last month’s shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona. The incident happened on Tuesday night, but didn’t get widespread play until Thursday.
A Broun staffer, as reported by the Athens Banner-Herald, almost immediately called the question “inappropriate.” Broun himself weighed in once it became clear that — this morning — the incident was developing national legs.
From Broun:
“Tuesday night at a town hall meeting in Oglethorpe County, Georgia an elderly man asked the abhorrent question, “Who’s going to shoot Obama?” I was stunned by the question and chose not to dignify it with a response; therefore, at that moment I moved on to the next person with a question.
After the event, my office took action with the appropriate authorities. I deeply regret that this incident happened at all. Furthermore, I condemn all statements—made in sincerity or jest—that threaten or suggest the use of violence against the President of the United States or any other public official. Such rhetoric cannot and will not be tolerated.”
The Washington Post has dipped in with this:
According to Ed Donovan, a Secret Service spokesman, the situation has been looked into.
“We’re aware of the incident and the appropriate steps were taken,” Donovan told me. “At this point it’s a closed matter.”
A law enforcement source confirmed that the Secret Service interviewed the constituent and determined that he or she was an “elderly person” who now regrets making a bad joke.
Here’s the original post on the incident, first recounted by Blake Aued of the Athens Banner-Herald. The remark, Aued wrote, got a big laugh from the crowd.
Aued also captured what he said was Broun’s immediate response:
“The thing is, I know there’s a lot of frustration with this president. We’re going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we’ll elect somebody that’s going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.”
Broun spokesman Austin Carson disputes that. “[Broun] made no response to the original question except to say, ‘Next question,’” Carson said. The words above that Aued reported, the spokesman said, was Broun’s answer to the next question. Which was also apparently critical of the president.
Clearly, many people will question whether Broun’s response was swift or strong enough. Among them are Senate Minority Leader Robert Brown, D-Macon:
“Congressman Broun showed no leadership, no tact, and no courage. No elected official should tacitly agree that shooting the president is an acceptable act. He should apologize for his stunning lack of moral courage to the citizens of Georgia, and to the president himself.”

Whoa. Reports are that Broun LAUGHED after the question was asked. I don’t care if you’re a Republican or a Democrat; that’s not an acceptable response. Why didn’t he push back IMMEDIATELY rather than wait a few days till it got into the mainstream press?

My question is why didn’t he call out the man and state right then and there that the comment was inappropriate. Making a media statement two days later is unacceptable. I also do not believe Broun is being sincere as his actions tell a different story. It is find to voice your disagreement but to suggest bodily harm is a entirely different matter.

Wow..Thats very interesting. But lets pull back the sheets for a second…There are plenty of people who ask themselves that very question, but wouldnt say it aloud. Sad, but true. Not saying its right because it isnt. But never has a President been viewed as being the cause of the Fall of America. Think about it, if you drive up 85 going towards Commerce, you will see billboards with President Obama’s face on it with snide comments attached. Really? But you cant go to an airport in Texas and mention any comments about former presidents? Freedom of speech (yeah, I know the drill) but this country is all twisted now and many blame him for it.

This wasn’t a quick response – whether in jest or not, Broun was asked, to his face, about killing the president and he did not say disagree for 2 days. That’s NOT quick. On the contrary, you reported yesterday that he did IMMEDIATELY respond to the questioner, talking about “frustration with this president” and pushing his regular rhetoric; his 2-day-late press release does not match the facts of what actually happened.
Excuse me, but if someone threatens the president, you dignify it with an immediate response. If Broun doesn’t think so, he isn’t up to the task of being a Congressman.

Swift response? He only issued this statement after the AP and some other outlets picked up the story. Ya gotta call b/s on his faux outrage over it now. He’s only in CYA mode; at the time, he likely knew it was simply how his core audience operates: irrationally and outside the boundaries of common sense.

How is a response on Friday to something that happened on Tuesday considered relatively quick? That’s absurd! And then Braun’s comments or fake “condemnation” only came after this hit the big newswires. What a fake liar he is! Braun had the opportunity to “condemn” that sttement then, but laughed and did otherwise. Wow, just, wow. Frankly, I don’t understand why ANYONE is surprised by this question to the congressman. This pot has been getting stirred since PRESIDENT OBAMA was ELECTED. Just listen to the open and distasteful comments that have been reported on (and the uglier comments placed in the blogosphere). These congressmen/senators/pundits, et. al., have been crafting this sentiment from the beginning, and frankly, to suddenly be “surprised” and to “condemn” such statements AFTER THE FACT is BALONEY. Even though I did not agree with President Bush, I did not tolerate nor allow anyone to make those statements towards a president that is the elected official of this country. The cowardly actions of these people are criminal and treasonous and should be addressed as such. Further, hiding behind the flag and claiming to be doing the “people’s work,” while yet supporting the demise of a sitting President who is African American smacks of racial bigotry. I don’t care what those on this blog will say, damn that, it is what it is. If Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter were sitting as the President today, these type questions or comments would NEVER be uttered.

The comment by the elderly man was at best grossly tacky. Don’t know Broun’s politics that well, but his response at the event (at least as reported) wasn’t really that bad in the circumstance. Would have been better for him to denounce the comment, but to basically ignore it and/or recognize that it was hyperbole isn’t really that outstanding. This story and the majority of comments is another example of the extremes of both parties being…extremists, fueled by an irresponsible media.
As far as this being typical of Republicans or tea partiers, well, I have to agree with the posts that it is typical fanfare for liberals too, and the vitriol and unwillingness to have a legitimate conversation about real issues that we are seeing on placards and hearing from podiums in Wisconsin is a perfect example of that.

Jim Galloway had his agenda before this news, and was compelled by liberal addictions to tie the tragic shooting of Gabrielle Giffords to this event. Jim wants to assert that Giffords was shot by a violent Tea Party member, and he’s still trying to prove that violence comes from the right, despite the ugly, violent union thugs goose-stepping their way to leftist tyranny this month. Galloway is just one of the AJC hacks that show us why the traditional newspaper business is shrinking, and why the AJC will survive only if it gets money from taxpayers, much like liberal NPR. You can bet the given a choice, Galloway would lead the union thugs to violence against their enemies. But that would be the correct kind of violence, which would be more than justified in his eyes. Liberals are becoming uglier, nastier, and more angry simply because their future of sucking off the American taxpayer may be in jeopardy, and as addicts, they don’t give a damn about anybody else but themselves.

To say people oppose Obama policies because of the shade of his skin is really just a cop-out for someone who doesn’t have a real argument. Do SOME people not like the president because of his skin…I am sure there are some. Others have legitimate gripes with his policies (irrespective of the man behind them). Throwing epithets from both sides of the aisle rather than considering the real issues at hand, however, is not productive.

Any public office holder must condemn any and all suggestions, hints, or words of any kind about violence against other office holders and any and all fellow citizens. To ignore is to condone. To laugh is to encourage. If anyone had treated George Bush in the manner Obama has been treated a lot of americans would have federal charges, universal criticism, and probably prison sentences. Nixon was hated as was Roosevelt. This is the first president to be so disrespected as a person and as a president. It must stop now. This is how the Tea Party aka Republican Party behave themselves in a closed group. They listen to Rush and Neal and Sean and Mark Levin and Ann Coulter and the rest of their ilk repeating the hate over and over and over again. They hear the same crap uttered by their neighbors, their friends, and most everyone else living nearby. Then they get in a private venue surrounded by their peers, and they forget that their remarks will be heard by the faithful opposition.

It’s sad that people are showing thier true colors. 1st you have a person making threats against the President of The United States and then you have an elected offical who heard the comment and decided to overlook it until days later. I’m sure that once the comment was made, someone else either cheered or agreed with the guy making the comment. It doesn’t matter any more, people are still mad because we have a black president. Congressman Broun was caught off guard…give him a break..Just imagine if you are in a town hall meeting fielding questions and out of nowhere comes a question like that..the normal reaction would be to move on to another question and ignore it rather than make an issue out of it , especially if the person was elderly and obviously not a threat..I think he just moved on to diffuse what could have been mishandled and turned into something ugly given how some of the town hall meetings have gone lately. Back off people and give the congressman a break – he had to think on his feet and you were not there to read the mood of the room..he was.

Considering it was Broun speaking to the group, I’m surprised you didn’t hear cheers from the crowd when the fool made his remark. He put a large sign in an area at my business. It’s a “strip mall” with a common area. He is disliked by some of us so much that we got together and banned all political signs from the common area. He is an embarrassment to us. In order to keep myself from being rude and not shaking his hand I just made myself busy with customers when he came in my store to meet me. I literally didn’t want to touch the man. There are only two or three people I feel that strongly about.

I think he handled it the proper way.

That the mess that the Wall Street crowd hatched had to be dealt with by someone?? Did it never occur to you Republicans that you can only play the deficit game for so long before someone has to try and sweep up behind the clowns that have led us down this road?
