Question to Paul Broun: ‘Who is going to shoot Obama?’

Early today, we told you of U.S. Rep. Paul Broun’s assertion at a town hall meeting in Oglethorpe County on Tuesday that he intended to use his new House subcommittee chairmanship to raise questions about scientific assertions about climate change.

What we missed was the blog post that came afterwards from Blake Aued of the Athens Banner-Herald:

At Rep. Paul Broun’s town hall meeting on Tuesday, the Athens congressman asked who had driven the farthest to be there and let the winner ask the first question.

We couldn’t hear the question in the back of the packed Oglethorpe County Commission chamber, but whatever it was, it got a big laugh. According to an outraged commenter on the article, the question was, when is someone going to shoot Obama?

Update: Broun’s press secretary, Jessica Morris, confirmed that the question was indeed, who is going to shoot Obama? “Obviously, the question was inappropriate, so Congressman Broun moved on,” she said.

Here was Broun’s response:

The thing is, I know there’s a lot of frustration with this president. We’re going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we’ll elect somebody that’s going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.

He then segued into Republicans’ budget proposal.

Update: Commenting has been turned back on this morning. Please keep it civil.

but apparently also dangerous.

Apparent how? I don’t see evidence of any harm.

I probably wouldn’t make jokes about the president being shot (there are less drastic jokes that would get the point across).

It speaks volumes about the Congressman’s constituency that the questioner felt comfortable enough to voice this and that it got laughs from his crowd. C. Broun cannot control who attends, but he certainly controls the message, the tenor, and the emotion. Can you imagine the same question at a John Lewis community meeting? I don’t recall the government ever having dangerous characters like Broun as members.

It’s not surpising the questioner was attending Broun’s little get-together. Birds of a feather flock together.

Broun is a coward. For someone who is hosting a town hall meeting not to rebuke his constituent is cowardly and immature. Is this the best that GA has to offer.
How many tax cuts and unfunded spending measures did Broun vote for under the previous president.
He was for the deficit before he was against it.

the article’s heading on the front page makes it seem as though Rep. Broun was the one asking the question. a reporter asked the question. Rep. Broun answered appropriately…. i personally don’t know Rep. Broun but believe in responsible reporting which we no longer seem to have in some of the

This being Black History Month and all:
Malcolm X was a deeply religious man who brought many men from a path of personal destruction to a life community based self sufficiency.
The only reason he is not as well known as MLK Jr is his mantra, “By any means necessary,” was just too far for those beyond his community to accept as a legitimate method of affect/effecting change.
And therein lies a missed lesson for the radical republican and tea party people just do not comprehend limits when it comes to their bombastic hate radio free speech.

It must be the difference between a congressman and senator. When the loopy lady during the 2008 campaign told Senator McCain that she thought Senator Obama was a Muslim he quickly corrected her on the spot.

Findog is right ... red herring not so much

February 25th, 2011
9:20 am

Findog is correct. Sen. McCain, in a very tight and contentious election where he needed every vote he could get, had the courage and decency to unflinchingly correct the old “loopy” lady who said Sen. Obama was “an Arab.” I’m sure he lost thousands of votes that day for correcting that woman the way he did, and then having it broadcast all over the world on all the networks and YouTube. I don’t agree with him on many issues, but I will always respect him for the way he handled that situation.

@red herring: It was not, as you state, a “reporter” who asked that sick question. It was one of Broun’s constituents. Instead of being milquetoast with his response, he should have stood up,”grown a pair” and been more direct. He should have told the man that our country has no place for that kind of rhetoric, joking or not. We can all respectfully agree to disagree, especially when you’re talking about the President of the United States.

Mr. Broun’s response was perfect. This is another reason why representatives like the Honorable Paul Broun need to be elevated to bigger, more important committees.

It’s true that most of this once-free nation is frustrated with Hussein Obama anti-American policies. There isn’t one conservative member in the U.S. Congress who advocates violence against this “president.” However, there are tons of far-left radical agitators who speak of violence all the time like the man who wished to blow up the Honorable President George W. Bush’s house. Then there are the left-wing radicals in Wisconsin who sympathize with inappropriate signs and anarchists who wish to storm state capitols to install their socialist agendas.

The Muslim Brotherhood, unions, socialists, communists, anarchists and agitators are all supporters of one another. They all support violence to get what they want. This philosophy extends from the future caliphate that will run from Tripoli to Teheran with all points in between and outside of this line. Deep red communism will strengthen from North Korea through China and it will join with the caliphate to form a super super super superpower which will overwhelm the West.

Is anyone else out there that can see this coming? Did anyone watch Glenn’s special on the 12 Imam? Wake up, people!

Amen,
Bill

Broun would never rebuke the questioner. Same as why Boehner won’t rebuke birthers. They got in bed with the nutjob wing of the GOP to get elected (or re-elected); and now they have to dance with the ones who brought them.

But remember, the right wing claims it’s not them with the violent rhetoric.

It is truly a sad, sad day … in Georgia and in the United States when the remedy we seek to political views opposed to our own is violence – the death of our President. While Mr. Broun was duly elected by his constituency, he represents all Georgians in word and deed. Too bad he did not have quick enough wit to denounce such an inappropriate question. I have to believe that Mr. Broun was quickly wishing for a “do over” in his response.

Broun has issued a new statement………

Tuesday night at a town hall meeting in Oglethorpe County, Georgia an elderly man asked the abhorrent question, “Who’s going to shoot Obama?” I was stunned by the question and chose not to dignify it with a response; therefore, at that moment I moved on to the next person with a question. After the event, my office took action with the appropriate authorities.

I deeply regret that this incident happened at all. Furthermore, I condemn all statements — made in sincerity or jest — that threaten or suggest the use of violence against the President of the United States or any other public official. Such rhetoric cannot and will not be tolerated.

No one would ever ask such a question like that if our our ‘president’ weren’t so weak. He is not a leader in any sense of the word. His liberalsm has all but bankrupted our country and at this time when we need a president with ‘testicular fortitude’ he is wringing his hands, wondering what to do. A lot of people have been slinging mud at our former president (with some good reasons), but you can bet he would be dealing with these matters with a lot more leadership and good sense than what we are stuck with now. Yippee Obama. We are truly underwhelmed by your diplomacy and uncertain leadership.

I am glad the Banner Herald reporter admitted that he could not hear the question or repsonse. I was sitting two seats from the man who asked the first question. Congressman Paul Broun was looking at the man, heard the question, stepped slightly back in shock, moved his head from side to side, looked into the audience and said, “Next Question”.

This was not Paul Broun’s response below as reported by Blake Aued of the Banner Herald. This statement came later in the Town Hall Meeting. The Reporter made it appear, that this statement was made immediately after the uncalled for question to the Congressman. Not true.

The thing is, I know there’s a lot of frustration with this president. We’re going to have an election next year. Hopefully, we’ll elect somebody that’s going to be a conservative, limited-government president that will take a smaller, who will sign a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.

I was very impressed on who the Congressman handled the shocking question. If he would have commented or engaged the individual the situation would have been worse. He clearly rejected the comment and moved on as he should have.

To the comment by the Atlanta “Preacher”? Being a preacher, doesn’t mean you preach truth? For all we know, you could be another Rev Wright?
The context of this BLOG misses the whole point! NEVER is it right to threaten a President, even if he’s 100% in the wrong, or not. BUT, to make this another RACIST based statement is truly “stupid” by this preacher! I don’t care if Obama is black, white, red, yellow, or blue – I just don’t like his socialist agenda, which is acceptable by most democrats.
I’m independant, but conservative in values,…. keep the government as far out of my life as possible! How anyone can claim to be a “Christian” preacher, but then condone sinful lifestyles (clearly stated in the Bible) as a supporting democrat – Blows my mind?
Talk about a watered down theology? But, consistent with the “End Times” we are living in!
P.S. God DOES love the sinner,… BUT hates the sin! (toelrance or ignorance?) You’ll stand before Him soon!

As a retired school teacher, I am amazed and saddened by the poor grammar and spelling, lack of
historical knowledge, and just plain coarse and hateful rhetoric. For example, Lee Harvey Oswald
was a communist. Many of you really need to study history and get your facts straight. You
don’t know anything about our Constitution and Bill of Rights, and what they really mean. Never
before has a country been established to give everyone the right to be free – in speech, religion,
assembly – and to “live the American Dream.” No, not everyone will become rich or famous, but
each has the opportunity to seek that Dream, be it a house, an education, a good job, and that one’s children will also be able to pursue that Dream in perpetuity. Without a return to first principles, and
our founding Judeo-Christian ethics, our country stands little chance in remaining the “land of the
free and the home of the brave.”
