Dallas mayor disavows ‘key to city’ for Michael Vick

Because even in Texas, people with dogs vote. From the Associated Press:

The mayor of Dallas says he did not sanction giving Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick a “key to the city.”

After missing two seasons serving a federal sentence for dogfighting, then spending most of the previous year as a seldom-used backup in Philadelphia, Michael Vick was named the Associated Press 2010 NFL Comeback Player of the Year last week. AP

After missing two seasons serving a federal sentence for dogfighting, then spending most of the previous year as a seldom-used backup in Philadelphia, Michael Vick was named the Associated Press 2010 NFL Comeback Player of the Year last week. AP

Vick won The Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year award this past season, his second in the NFL since serving 18 months in prison for operating a dogfighting operation.
Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway presented the key at a ceremony in Dallas last week.

In a statement issued Monday, Mayor Tom Leppert distanced himself from the gift.

“The action taken was not sanctioned by my office and was not an official ceremonial honor on behalf of the city of Dallas,” he said.

He said “official keys to the city” are presented by the mayor or an elected official designated by the mayor and are reserved for “an elected official of international status.”

“Clearly, this was not the case in this situation and one without my knowledge or approval,” he said.

In his own statement, Caraway said the key was “ceremonial.”
“These ceremonial gifts are different from the official keys to the city presented by the mayor,” he said.

As for honoring a convicted felon, Caraway said, “I care deeply about animals” and “am deeply sorry to offend anyone who loves animals.”

He acknowledged Vick’s past but noted that “since making some bad choices, Michael Vick has devoted time to speaking to children about staying in school staying away from drugs, making positive choices about picking friends and the importance of education. That was the focus of the event.”

Leppert said he has asked the city manager to “propose guidelines to prevent this situation in the future. Caraway said he would “welcome a clarification of the guidelines.”

I’d prefer to hear about Mayor Tom Leppert’s position on people (e.g., what are you doing about helping legitimate businesses do well enough to create jobs, what about eliminating abortions, what about getting the homeless off the streets and into respect-fostering situations so they can be hopeful and “homeful,” etc.). In candor, I could not care less about his position on animals – they are animals people – let’s focus on people. We aren’t very effective on helping humans, but I am sorry if I offended anyone who likes/loves animals …. who gives a &^%$#$% you fools.

So what if he has paid his time to the penal system. What has done to deserve the key to the city of Dallas, ceremonial or otherwise?

Michael Vick should still be in jail!!! Because he plays “football” he appears he is above the rest of us. He certainly does not deserve a key to the City of Dallas…..he should be traumatized on a daily basis….exactly as he treated those poor animals. I am sorry – he is NO HERO or role model. He is a convicted felon and criminal.

I think they gave him the keys as a set-up, Mike shouldn’t accept anymore awards stay low and do his job. The one thing that kills me is that Mike was never a bad guy, he was always a community figure(He gave to Churches and held free youth football camps etc.) he just had a bad habit no different than someone on cocaine or crystal meth.

How long are they going to punish Mike Vick? He served his time, and paid his debt to society. Meanwhile, people are more forgiving of child molestors, murderers, rapists, spouse beaters than they are of this man.

I hear all this hate over what Vick did… Turn the page folks. However, to those who can’t… What about D. Stallworth? He ran over a man while drunk and got 30 days in jail. Vick kills a dog and gets 2 yrs??? Something is awefully wrong with this.

What about people who are child molester, they can live anywhere they want to live in the united states except close to schools. Why not send all of them off some where. I; m glad that a lot of these folks are not God because if they were we would all be dead. Not one person on this site is free from sin. We all have skeletons in our closet, Even president aren’t free from sin.. God has no respect for a person one sin is not bigger or smaller than another. I love animals and I don’t want anything to happen to them, but I love people more, what about these dogs who are so violent they have killed little kids . I have read so many stories where Girl loses part of arm in dog attacks or pittbull that mauled children.. seems like we have more respect for people who are child molester or kids who kick and beat each other, or people who drink and drive, even if they have killed someone on the road.lets go look into the mayors closet and see what kind of skeltons come out from there.

MV wasn’t treated “special” because of who he is, rather , had he not been of name and publicity value he would have been treated less harsh than he was. MV was a means to an end for the always clamoring for headlines PETA, and gave to them on a silver platter the means to put their name in the public discussion for months and months. PETA hadn’t had a fraction of the publicity prior to MV’s actions as they got after. What he did was vile and wrong, but PETA is about PETA first and foremost and putting their name in the papers. They’re kind of like our political parties, All put what’s best for their organizations ahead of whats best for the ones they should be fighting for.

OMG ppl act like Vick killed a person or raped someone. He did his time, “paid his debt to society” let that man live his life. It’s a shame that some STILL crucify someone for doing wrong. Yet there are PLENTY of atheletes AND government officials who commit far worse crimes that Vick did. But for some reason they don’t get the same public scrutiny. I wonder why? Hmmmm….. go figure!

The mayor id not take or give him a key to the city. The Vice mayor gave him a gift for changing his life around and helping kids do the same. It was not an official key to the city, so people pull your panties out of the wade. Gees, Vick killed some dogs, went to prison, played football, won an award, and still folks have an opinion. So what else is new.

For those of you who continue to persecute Vick, I hope your children or love ones never make a mistake in life. You may not have been sent to jail but I’m sure you did some wrong in your life at some point. You will be judge the by the same measure you judge others. It’s good that almighty God does not think like you or we all would be in hell or on our way! Get over it!

I live in Dallas and was not offended that he was given the ” CEREMONIAL” key to Dallas. He did a horrible thing by fighting and killing dogs. I was not hurt when he had to go to jail because he committed a crime. He served a harsh sentence for animal cruelty ( so far the harshest one — RESEARCH). He is out now and NOT committing crimes and should not be in jail for doing nothing NOW. He paid for his past with his life and money; in a prison with murders and the like. He is trying to do what white American asked all Blacks to do. This is Black history month, blacks for taken to the town square and hung for looking at certain people. Blacks were asked to get over it and move on. Michael Vick is trying to move on just like Whites did after killing… PEOPLE. So all you vegetarian ( surely you don’t eat the animals others kill), please move on. The man is okay. He is not doing wrong and he is doing everything imaginable to make it right. Give him a chance and watch those nasty tongues. I can’t imagine you kissing your kids and praising God with that same mouth that you bash Michael Vick with. It’s time to remove the hood and…. LETS PLAY FOOTBALL.

first respondent talks about what he “is” instead of what he “used to be”
funny how we get so upset over other people’s faults and sins yet not much at all over our own.

maybe you’re just mad that m. vick still has an avenue for great monetary rewards and athletic fame while you on the other hand have nothing in comparison. Oh you have something, but to you it just ain’t enough!

Vick is gross and BJ you’re right up there. People do deserve a 2nd chance and to be forgiven – when they make a mistake ONCE, realize it, and quickly decide to make up for it. He was killing and abusing poor animals for YEARS! This doe snot , not will it ever be worthy of a 2nd chance OR forgiveness.

2nd chance at life? Yes.
2nd chance in the NFL? NO!

I don’t care WHO YOU ARE, if you are convicted as a FELON, you DO NOT deserve a 2nd chance at professional sports. Anyone who actually supports a person like this is a real *dumass*.

He could kill his own mother and probably still have support from “certain people” just because he is an “athlete”, with the lame-o defense statement of, “the man did his time (for being a FELON), now he deserves to make millions (playing a game)”.

What a great message.

This story is hilarious. This cowardly mayor d*bag wants to distinguish between “ceremonial” keys and “official” keys to the city.
What is the difference? It’s all ceremonial, you idiot.
Instead of not being racist enough and not loving animals enough, now he is un-racist and a double-talking nitwit. That, in the South, is political suicide.
If he really cared, he would ask for the Mayor Pro Tem’s resignation.
Mike Vick is awesome, always has been, always will be. I have had his back since the beginning, and I would still have his back even if he has never gotten back in the league. He is the most exciting player I have ever seen in person. Now that we have Matty Ice and a grat coach, everything is good in the ATL. We are all moving on. Life is too good to hate. Except for this stupid mayor. He should pimpslap himself for being wishywashy.
