Chick-fil-A locked in a Pennsylvania fight over gay marriage

Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A has found itself drawn into a fight over gay rights in Pennsylvania.

From my AJC colleague Jeremiah McWilliams:

A variety of complaints against the Atlanta-based company coalesced this month. There was the decision by a Chick-fil-A operator in Pennsylvania to supply food to an event sponsored by the Pennsylvania Family Institute, which has worked to defeat gay marriage initiates and has become a lightning rod for gay rights groups. There was a blogger’s contention that Chick-fil-A’s WinShape Foundation does not admit gay couples to marriage counseling.

From the New York Times:

Nicknamed “Jesus chicken” by jaded secular fans and embraced by Evangelical Christians, Chick-fil-A is among only a handful of large American companies with conservative religion built into its corporate ethos.

But recently its ethos has run smack into the gay rights movement. A Pennsylvania outlet’s sponsorship of a February marriage seminar by one of that state’s most outspoken groups against homosexuality lit up gay blogs around the country.

Students at some universities have also begun trying to get the chain removed from campuses.

“If you’re eating Chick-fil-A, you’re eating anti-gay,” one headline read. The issue spread into Christian media circles, too.

The controversy has moved president Dan Cathy to declare, in this video posted on the company Facebook fan page, to declare that while marriage is a focus of his chain, the provision of sandwiches and brownies for a local event is not an endorsement:

Dan Cathy Statement from Chick-fil-A on Vimeo.

Said Cathy:

”Some recent events have called into question the principles of Chick-fil-A, and speak directly to the heart of our organization. Last week, one of our local franchise Chick-fil-A operators in Pennsylvania made the decision to provide food to two upcoming February events billed to strengthen marriages.

“Marriage has long been a focus of Chick-fil-A, starting with my own Mom and Dad who are celebrating their 63rd year of marriage. In this case, the operator simply agreed to provide sandwiches and brownies for the events, as many Chick-fil-A franchises have done over the years for community events, businesses and civic groups.

“Some have used this small donation of food to suggest otherwise. We are very proud that our Chick-fil-A operators and employees work hard every day to go the extra mile in serving all of our customers with honor, dignity and respect.

“Let me be clear. Chick-fil-A serves all people, and values all people. Providing food to these events or any event is not an endorsement of the mission, political stance, or motives of this or any other organization. Any suggestion otherwise is just inaccurate.”

Clearly the topic is hot. This has been posted on the fast-food franchise’s Facebook fan page:

Hey fans. Please be respectful of others and treat this page as a fan page, not a place to argue with each other. Antagonistic, offensive, mean-spirited or crude posts will be removed and the person will be banned. Thank you.

Same applies here.

I certainly won’t be eating there for lunch anymore after this story broke. They can think that way if they want to, of course, but that means I have just as much right to refuse to spend money there and encourage everyone else I know to boycott them as well.

Chick-fil-A HAS A COMMERCIAL RIGHT TO SUPPLY FOOD TO ANY GROUP CONTRACTING FOR THAT SERVICE. AS A CORPORATION THEY IN FACT ARE FOLLOWING ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAWS PUT IN PLACE BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
WHAT SOME ANTI-CHICK-FIL-A GROUPS ARE PR0MOTING IS IN FACT SLANDER AND A RESTRICTION OF FREE SPEECH.
THERE SHOULD BE OUTRAGE AT THIS ATTEMPT TO RESTRICT A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT

That’s the problem with gay rights groups, they take everything out of context and try to shove their sexuality down your throat and then they are upset and start protesting if you don’t like it.

I think everyone probably already knows Chick-fil-a is a conservative Christian business. If anyone disagrees with this stance, they probably already don’t go there. I don’t think the vast majority of people decide where to eat based on politics and religion but rather on price, quality, and service. Chick-fil-a excels on those three.

I like Chick-fil-A because they stand for something other than serving fattening fast food to people who crave it. They’re a private company that can do what ever they please! We shop at Walmart, Target, Belk, McDonalds, etc and never seem to care what they stand for. I guess if a company wants to be pro-gay then that’s okay and we all should just shut up and support them???

The great thing about America is this…….we have a right to our own opinions and can choose to do what we want with our money. I’m tired of everything needing to be politically correct and not wanting to offend those who are fundmentally against the Christian faith!!! Thank you Mr. Cathy for having some conviction and strength in this troubled world.

So, when they provide food to both democrats and republicans during the elections, is that a shot against each party? This company is pretty upfront. No sales on Sunday and the owners are public with their religious beliefs. It is understandable that a pro marriage oganization would be able to obtain donations of food. However, the gay left will not accept that christians will support pro marriage organizations.

Chick-fil-A is a private company (although it is subject to federal civil rights statutes with regard to its employment practices) but as someone who has bought the product for decades I found this excerpt from The New York Times article to be somewhat disconcerting

“The company’s Christian culture and its strict hiring practices, which require potential operators to discuss their marital status and civic and church involvement, have attracted controversy before, including a 2002 lawsuit brought by a Muslim restaurant owner in Houston who said he was fired because he did not pray to Jesus with other employees at a training session. The suit was settled.”

I always thought you were supposed to be hired on the basis of your ability to do the job, not whether you go to the right church, and was unaware being a successful employee in the fast food industry was somehow tied to your marital status. It’s their decision how to run their business and my decision where to spend my lunch money.

Do like KFC does and Do Chicken Right– and Truett Cathy (if that is your real name)..if you are getting into the marriage counseling business then you should go back to school and get a different degree. Or open up a church where you can preach. Get out of your ivory tower. Just because your parents have been married for 63 years does NOT make you a marriage expert. Stick to making sure that your chicken doesn’t give people salmonella and that your workers wash their hands and what you do on your own personal time is not also shoved down people’s throats.

The first job I ever had when I was 15 years old was at Chick-fil-a. We had an openly gay employee. No one cared, because he was a good person and a hard worker (He was also a gay christian). Yes, they have a tighter hiring process. That’s why they provide such a good product and experience. Look at the employees at Mcdonald’s and then look at the employees at Chick-fil-a. People are making too much of this issue. Dan Cathy’s response was spot on.

I believe Chick-fil-A are all franchised to people with like views. It is a Christian based company and should be ale to remain that way. There are plenty of companies that hire like minded people and they should be able to. The FAMILY is the foundation of the American Way of Life. More children of single parents get in more trouble and that is a statical fact. The FAMILY is the best support system in the world. If C-F-A wishes to support Man & Woman marriage and not gay marriage that is OK. I know the Christain beliefs the company is based on, but I have never seen a Bible or Cross in one of their stores for public consumption. The Company has a great Scholarship program that have benefited many children.
I guess all you Chick-fil-A haters need to stop buying fule and oil from Muslin run countries too. They religion doesn’t believe in gay rights either.

As a loyal customer of Chick-Fil-A, I have to chuckle at this whole conversation. Your illogical unhappiness with their decision to donate food to this pro-marriage group simply creates free, mostly positive advertising for the company. Despite your desire otherwise, only a small percentage of potential customers will be “offended” at this. Bottom line is: your lunacy is good for their bottom line. Doesn’t that just get your goat? :-) :-)

Okay, Chick-Fil-A donates its food to my kid’s high school all the time for all kinds of activities, yet never once has the franchisor asked what the sexual orientation or beliefs are of the particular organization. So if you want to “read” something into the incident in Pennsylvania, be my guest. But Dan Cathy clarified that to do so is bogus.

They make good chicken. They do good business. The corporate executives have a right to their beliefs because we live in America. I personally support gay rights, but it all goes back to the first sentence in this paragraph. End of story.

The last time someone went to Chic-fil-a, were they forced to go to church? Did they shove the Bible down their throat? No. It is a company that was founded with Christian principles, chooses to continue abiding by those principles, and makes a high-quality product. They don’t force their beliefs at others, they just let the principles guide them on a daily routine. However, that doesn’t even matter as far as this is concerned. They donated food to an event, which is done all the time by Chic-fil-a. It is a marketing strategy. Every company does it. To boycott the company because of it is moronic. They do so much good in this world, and I am proud to consume Chic-fil-a often. If any moronic students tried to shut down the Chic-fil-a on my campus, I think there would be more support to keep it. Ugh. The stupid liberal media always makes a big deal about these things. If Wal-mart made a contribution to an abortion clinic, nothing would be said. But if Wendy’s donates to the NRA, all hell would break loose. If you don’t want to eat Chic-fil-a, fine. Don’t, but do it because you don’t like the food. Doing it because of something like this just makes you look dumb.

The truth is that trash breeds trash. People who justify discrimination against other human beings based on something so laughably insignificant aren’t worth the air they breathe.

You are posting on the internet. The internet that has Google. What is wrong with groups that promote stronger marriage? I am gay and think the strainght people need all the help they can get in this area. Straights are getting it wrong everyday. Just look at the divorce rate and the number of children that are born out of wedlock and the teen age birth rate. Can’t blame all that on the gays. If a stronger marriage keeps families together then more power to them. Gays are not the downfall of the american family, straights are….just look in the mirror. This tax paying, gainfully employeed, christian gay will eat at chic-fil-a any day of the week …except sunday or course!! After reading alot of comments on this section. Its clear that Christians that are replying don’t understand that the pro-family movement is the same thing as pro-hate to the people who don’t fit in to their beliefs. It’s deep into the pro family movement to attack people that are diffrent from the so called family. The gays are just fighting back and counter the attack of the religious right. Yes the do sell chicken but sell to the pro family group is like selling to the enemy

I’m sorry but isn’t a gay christian what you call an oxymoron? It’s black or white, no gray. You’re not going to be able to say “I love Jesus but I’m also gay” when you stand face to face with God. The bible says if you want to be Jew or Christian, you should CHOOSE to be man and wife. The bible is not condemning you for being gay, but telling you to make a choice. I am a married man, and I don’t tell anybody about my sex life.( After 23 years, there isn’t much) I have never had sex in Church.
In my teens I had a girlfriend. We did in the pool, the beach, my bed, her bed, family car, neighbor’s car, on the table, under the table, back yard, front yard, laundry mat, wash machine, spin cycle, and the bathroom floor in a mental hospital.
We weren’t married, so our sin was equal to or greater than the sin of homosexuality. It is a sin to wear clothes that are not pure wool. That is in the bible too. Don’t eat pork. That’s a sin too.

As a former practicing homosexual (no one — NO ONE!! is born homosexual, but practices or lives in a homosexual lifestyle), I wholly support Chick-Fil-A and its business ethos. Although the business in Pennsylvania was not endorsing a group by providing food for them, I do support (and encourage!!) their right to provide food for whatever organization they so choose to do so.

The homosexual response to Chick-Fil-A is purely driven by the need to focus attention upon their agenda; i.e., of forcing society to accept and to endorse their lifestyle in order for them to gain minority status. By doing so, it will enable them to change the laws of this country that will force us to officially accept and endorse homosexuality in all aspects of our society. Ever since 1972, the Gay Movement has set out to attack the media, the family, and the church. Private and public businesses being attacked by the Gay Movement are only one of the means to their end. Please SUPPORT Chick-Fil-A in resisting their efforts and to stand strong on the truth and not to waver.

The people who are all upset and want to boycott do not realize that if they applied this standard across the board, they’d be narrowed down to very few places to shop, eat out, buy groceries, go on vacations, etc. So by all means people, boycott. Make sure you check out every single business out there as well. It means less simpleton thinking around me when I shop.

And strike one up for the “tolerant” out there. The so called “tolerant” ones out there are the ones calling for heads to roll and to end relationships with Chic Fil A. You gotta love the irony. “We tolerate everyone…except for certain people who have opposing views from me.” Stone Age logic.

Considering the fact that corporations now have the same free speech rights as actual human voters, Chick-fil-A is perfectly within its constitutional right to donate to any anti-gay cause it cares to. On the other hand, both gays and straights who disagree with Chick-fil-A’s decision have every right to deny spending their money on the corporation’s products. Simple. That’s what the Constitutionis all about. Corporations received last year the blessings of the US Supreme Court under “Citizens United” to pour as much money as they can afford to pour into any campaign they wish to, so it’s only fitting that other citizens be permitted to withhold spending their money to buy Chick-fil-A products.

No one has been able to tell me how I threaten anything in their own marriages. All they can say is they don’t believe in the same God I do. That’s fine. I am just wondering why “Christianity” has become nothing more than a religion of hate? That is nothing like what Jesus was about. The poster with 5150 UOAD is a prime example. Who wants to be part of something that hates others because they may not be just like you? Not me. I don’t go to mainline “Christian” churches anymore because they are filled with self-righteous people that judge based on what they are told by the man in the pulpit. When you actually read and study for yourself you find a whole different world than what comes from most pulpits.

Though I am very gay-friendly I am not going to boycott CFA but I would hope this would lead CFA to donate to say pro-(gay) marriage groups as well. That is the way they can prove they are not biased. After all, gay marriage is not going to destroy the institution on marriage, straight people have already done that with a divorce rate of over 50% – even in the “christian” church.

I honestly cannot think of a better example of poor business judgment and pandering to that segment of society who are always missing opportunities because they are focused on the wrong thing.
This culture of bad judgment leads me to the presumption that CFA intended to support a group that seeks to trample the rights of same-sex couples just to make a shallow, hateful point.

Here is one remedy:

Dear Red States…

We’ve decided we’re leaving. We intend to form our own country, and
we’re taking the other Blue States with us.

In case you aren’t aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon,Washington,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast. We
believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially
to the people of the new country of New California.

To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get Elliot
Spitzer. You get Ken Lay.

We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood.
We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole’ Miss.
We get 85 percent of America’s venture capital and entrepreneurs. You
get Alabama.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states
pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the
Christian Coalition’s, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a
bunch of single moms.

Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and
anti-war, and we’re going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at
once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have
kids they’re apparently willing to send to their deaths for no
purpose, and they don’t care if you don’t show pictures of their
children’s caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq, and
hope that the WMDs turn up, but we’re not willing to spend our
resources in Bush’s Quagmire.

With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent
of the country’s fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple
and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation’s fresh fruit, 95 percent of
America’s quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners)
90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most
of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and
condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.

With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88
percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care
costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the
tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern
Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh,
Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.

Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was
actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred
unless we’re discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say
that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved
in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy @#$%&! believe you are people
with higher morals then we lefties.

By the way, we’re taking the good pot, too. You can have that dirt
weed they grow in Mexico.

Sincerely,
Author Unknown in New California

“huh? Kev, Christ is the way, truth, and the life. Homosexuality is an abomination. It’s mentioned in the old testament and new testament. Jesus never had to mention it because it was known. He had more important things to talk about like relationship and the Kingdom of heaven. Stop taking what I said out of context and read the word. YOU WERE NOT BORN GAY! That is the biggest lie Satan can throw at someone.”

If that’s your idea of a loving religion you can keep it and keep it out of my life and public institutions.

Oh, I guess you weren’t born straight. It’s a choice as well. Can you tell me the moment when you decided to live the heterosexual lifestyle?

I don’t care if CFA executives pray on an alter to Satan every day…the service at CFA is hands-down flat out better than just about anywhere else I’ve ever eaten in that wasn’t Ruth’s Chris. The food is yummy and not overpriced, the stores are always immaculate (not a pun there, sorry) esp. when compared to other fast-food place.

How sweet it is to know that the gays will not be patronizing Chick-Fil-A. I plan to eat more chicken.

Tell you what. Go start your own QFC, and see if more people patronize it than Chick-Fil-a. Maybe Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert can sing a duet on the commercials.

Went out of my way to buy a Chick Fil A today. Might tomorrow too.

The gay rights people who think they can intimidate everyone who disagrees with them might be in for a nasty surprise.
The Gay Nazis are just unamerican as they try to force every business to toe the line with their narrow, bigoted attacks. I fully intend to punish any business who supports the Gay Nazis.

The bottom line is that Chic-Fil-A can donate or give food to whoever or whatever they choose, but it is dumb of them to think that people will not be offended if they give food to an organization that is anit-gay. It’s disingenuous of Chic-Fil-A to want gays or those who support gays to shop in their store if they support or donate food to organizations that oppose gays.

Bottom line is we have freedom to spend our money how we like, just as Chic-Fil-A can donate to whom they choose. They will have to decide if it is worth it to them to do so. I will not be eating at Chic-Fil-A again if this is their stance. What I find sad reading these pathetic comments is that so many of them are seething with hate towards gay people. What is funnier though is that we are all sinners and if you are a Christian or call yourself a Christian and talk this way about Gays you have just judged their sin far harsher than you judge your own. Hmmmmm…. You people are the real problem and really need to look in the mirror and do some self reflection. Jesus is weeping when you behave this way. Calling yourself a Christian doesn’t make you one. :p

Thank you CFA for supporting what marriage really is. A holy union of a man and a woman. If gays want to be together, go ahead. But marriage is a religious ceremony, and I am so happy that a company will finally stand up for that belief.

Chick-fil-A brought this on themselves. I remember interviewing for a job at Chick-fil-A back in high school (circa 1996). During the interview, they asked me if I was active in a youth group and the name of the church that I attend. This might not be illegal, but it is not good business. They are setting themselves up for a ton of lawsuits. I’m a Christian, but decided not to work their based on their question alone so they did me a favor.

we’re a hetero couple who support gay peoples’ rights to marry (like they can do worse than the GROTESQUE DIVORCE RATES for hetero/religious people? …that screw kids up WORSE than having two gay parents?!? LOL). we aren’t Libs, but know how laughable you “Christian Right” people can be, wanting to talk about “tolerance and love for all, as my SAVIOR says”, then quickly point the finger. it’s as evident as the ignorant, holier-than-thou comments on here.

some of you people, i’m sure, won’t be “going to Chic-a-fil-A more”, because you’re trash. if you do, you’ll just be doing it alone, as usual, primarily because you are so unlikeable, but also because it is STUPID to talk about “value” in regards to a chicken sandwich w/ minimal vegetables, a soda, and fries for, like, 7 freakin’ dollars.

if you want “value” and CRAP food, go to McCrapold’s. if you want better food and don’t care about the $, go to Chic-a-fil-A. …not saying too much to be “better” than McCrapold’s, though. no wonder the have the “Ronald McDonald House”, you gotta do SOMETHING for kids to be able to sleep at night, i guess!

…or better yet, do what we do and fry your own chicken breast (as good, if not better than Chic-a-fil-A), get a FRESH BUN THAT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE SOMEONE SAT ON IT (definitely better than Chic-a-fil-A), and some FRESH, GOOD VEGGIES TO PUT ON IT. cheaper than McCrapold’s, better for your pocketbook & body than Chic-a-fil-A.

everytime we want one of those friggin’ sandwiches, it’s a Sunday anyway.

…sure are gonna miss the fry-thingys & the fresh lemonade, but you can do that at home as well anyway.

This is positive for Chick Fil A, a good re-inforcement of the image and goodwill that the company has with it’s customer base.
They can thank the activists and the liberal press for the free advertising.

They were *giving* the food away to the right wing bigots. Not just selling it to them. Hence the Sh*t storm.

Count me out of ever buying from them again. Only been there a few times in my life and turned off by their ‘closed on sundays’ B.S.

They are perfectly free to give that crappy trash to any right wing group they want and I am perfectly free to boycott, to encourage others to boycott and to make sure my business never gives any money their way.

Dumb a** southerners and brain dead antigay bigots. A marriage made in Georgia.

Great company! Great Food! It’s always amazing how Liberals (and Gays) are all about equal rights, freedome of speech, freedom of religeon, etc UNLESS you disagree with them, then they want to destroy you. I support Chic-fil-a 120%.

I’m going to eat there twice as much to make up for the gay guy who says he’ll never eat there again.

If Chick-fil-A backs down on this they’ll lose my support…if they stand up to the homo Nazis I’ll be eating there and taking my huge religious family there for the rest of my life and spending as much of my American dollars there as I can.

Until this controversy a few days ago I never even heard of Chick-fil-A. But after reading all about them I would not feel comfortable going to one of their stores.

Come On now.

I don’t know what half of the minority groups in the United States are complaining about. You have it about a thousand times better here than you would in any other country. As a Christian, I see things the same way. In China, I could be jailed and quite likely killed for openly professing Christ. I’ve gotta say, life is Aces in the states as a Christian. Homosexuals are treated quite inhumanely in other countries. i completely disagree with such things. Homosexuality is a crime in certain countries…certain non-Christian countries as well.

If you understood the message of Christ, you’d understand that it does nothing but express love for the sinner. That’s me, that’s you, that’s all of us.

This was not a political move on Chick-fil-A’s part. They just fed people. I used to work for them. I still love the company months after I was let go! Why? Because they helped me in so many other ways than just ‘giving me a job’. I thanked God for that job every day. To say that the franchise owners have any motive that is hateful is just plain nonsense. They support the rebuilding of two institutions that are in horrible trouble today. Those are marriage and family. What’s wrong with that? It’s not homosexuals that are ruining it, not alone. It’s not just heterosexual people either. It’s people! Just people. We ruin everything.

I’ve read that they banned lesbian and gay couples from participating in their winshape retreat. They’re allowed to do that. It’s not discrimination. It would be just nonsensical to allow such behavior at a Christian couples’ retreat, while saying they believe in Gods’ specific design for the family. This company’s set of values is derived from the Bible. And the book says this, “A man shall leave his mother and father and cling to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.”
Nothing changes that.
I’ve never heard or witnessed an incident in which any team member at chick-fil-a refused to serve someone who was homosexual. I’ve served transvestites/transgender men/women, and I still had a smile on my face and enjoyed serving them.

And now that I think of it, Chick-fil-a is doing just as a Christian ought to. Their own customers are spitting in their face and cursing their name, refusing to patronize them. It may be just a fast food chain, but together as a team, they’re doing just what Christ has called them to do, serve. I am so proud of where this company is today and I’ll continue to support them.

I could not bring myself to hate someone because of their orientation, or race or what have you, because it’s not as Christ would have me do. He loves who we are, but He died to put away our sin.
There is only one truth in this situation, and that’s His truth.
