The St. Paul Pioneer Press has a piece today about the dangers encountered by Republicans who dare to criticize Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachman, whose tea party following served as a platform for her own personal response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.
The article includes two paragraphs that tell what happened to a particular Georgia congressman last August, in the hours after the Republican runoff for governor, after he agreed that Sarah Palin should “butt out” of local races:
Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga. — who has a long conservative voting record — said he learned the power of Palin’s following the hard way after suggesting she stay out of Georgia’s Republican gubernatorial primary on a radio show.
“There was a firestorm in the office for about 24 hours,” he said, with people “questioning my Republican conservative credentials” in phone calls. “To Sarah Palin’s credit, you have a national network of very energized fans.”

I find that Politfact is an excellent source for bi-partisan political commentary. Ms. Bachman is regularly skewered for her pronouncements. Ms. Palin doesn’t fare much better. Personal opinion is that both speak outlandishly because they crave attention and being bombastic is the way to get it. Facts be damned.

TO THE ABOVE COMMENT–It’s your amazing ignorance of what she can do and have already done to help this country on track by initializing people power to bring change to the dangerous spending practices the govt. have. It’s these “blinded people”you refer to that cause the GOP to gain control of congress that put the brakes on Obama-Pelosi and Reid spending spree. You and the likes of you are the real problem of this country. Either you are totally blind of the nation’s state or you are just a plain bigoted idiot that doesnt know where you are headed. This country sinks, you go down with it-
You call this woman ignorant, WHAT ABOUT YOU???WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO HELP OUT THAT IS BETTER THAN WHAT SHE IS TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH FOR ALL OF US , INCLUDING YOU!!! FORGET THE HARVARD FINESS THAT PEOPLE SAY SHE DOESNT HAVE. BUT SHE HAS THE ABILITY TO CONNECT TO PEOPLE. AND IF YOU ARE INTELLIGENT ENOUGH YOU WOULD HAVE FIGURED OUT THAT IT IS THE PEOPLE COLLECTIVELY THAT BRINGS THE CHANGE. BUT PEOPLE DOES NOT RALLY UNTIL THEY SEE SOMEONE WHO HAS THE BALLS TO FACE THE OPPOSITIONS WITHOUT FEAR. THAT IS WHAT SARAH PALIN IS ALL ABOUT. SHE KNOWS WHAT WORKS ,SHE HAS DIRECTION ,SHE MAKES THE MOST OF LIFE AS HANDED TO HER , SHE IS BASICALLY A HAPPY PERSON, A GOOD MOM , A GOOD WIFE, WAS A GOOD MAYOR AND A GOOD GOVERNOR and pretty on top of that. ASK YOURSELF SINCERELY WHAT TICKS YOU OFF ABOUT SARAHPALIN, is it jealousy? is it because she’s happy? generally miserable ugly and unhappy people tend to be critical, hateful and can’t celebrate someone else’s happiness. which one are you?

Two things – first is the fact that our current President has made even more and even bigger bumbles. What’s his excuse? The “more educated” world traveled “smartest president ever” makes mistakes and no one says a thing. But when Palin does? Second thing, the Left tries so hard to make Palin irrelevant. Funny thing for someone so irrelevant, the Left has spent more time and money going after the irrelevant. Who’s the bigger fool? It’s actually ironic that the Left is so obsessed with someone so labeled an idiot. Why spend millions on ads, organizing, blogs, news articles, news reports, etc. on someone with no job? It’s actually hilarious. Sort of a fetish. Maybe liberal men are repressed since having foxes like Janet Reno, Madeline Albright, Helen Thomas, etc. Liberal women are clearly jealous that a woman can have so much attention and not be so bent on some radical feminist agenda.

Make fun of her at your own peril. I think she’s about as dangerous a person as we’ve seen on the political stage since David Duke and JB Stoner – she appeals to the xenophobia that is in everyone (some more than others), and to the intense desire for simple, understandable answers to what are actually extremely complicated questions.
Many a despot has risen to high office with this kind of sophomoric approach, so anyone who gets going in that direction scares me far more for the future of our Republic than does a lefty African-American president who really wants things to be better than they are.
There aren’t any simple answers to our present problems, but Sarah would have us believe that there are, and all you got to do is do them. If only the world really worked like that… I’d like it better.

Dee, Dee, Dee, honey, stop yelling at us…you’re going to pop an artery. No, I am not jealous of Mrs. Palin – I am just much smarter than she. She’s a quitter – she didn’t even finish one term as a governor – so she can’t really be called “former governor”. She had to go to five colleges to get a 4-year degree. She doesn’t stress education in her own family – eldest son in military (very admirable) but always seen as an alternative to higher education. Eldest daughter becomes an unwed teen mom who preaches abstinence (don’t pee on my leg and tell me…you know the rest) while dancing on tv instead of continuing her education. Those are just a few of the reasons I don’t care for Mrs. Palin and why I am indeed smarter than she.

Palin has a cult following. I question the statement in the article that it is a “national network”. I would say it is a hardcore group of supporters in red states that have found a purpose in live. Their religious believes motivate them to support palin. They never see anything negative about palin’s words or actions. In their eyes palin is perfect and anyone that expresses the slightest criticism is called a “hater” “jealous” etc. Their dedicated method of voting kept bristol on DWTS past what should have been her elimination time.
Her loyal supporters have a list of comments and they probably spend endless hours going from site to site to reply to any criticism about their idol. You can’t engage them in dialog it appears posting anything beyond their repetitive cliches is beyond their capability.
Any assumption of volumes based on the number of calls or posting should be considered dubious.

Hey, markie mark, I thought you would recognize that calling someone “hon” is a generic southern term having nothing at all to do with wanting to take the place of the one you’ve “been with” for so long. I actually did not know I was dealing with a moron, but thanks for clearing that up! Hate to point it out, but we are way past the lame duck session and Obama’s numbers are still climbing, so just stay tuned is all I can tell you! Yes, I’ll see you in 2012 and you will be on the losing side, but I’ll bet you’re used to that already…..right, hon?

I bet he learn his lession, no matter how you try to fit in with these tea party people you will always be considered inferior to them.
Herman Cain will get a rude wake up call, the difference between your Cain and other tokens, we face reality while these token search for acceptance.
I can make money without, selling out who I am and where I am from. Those people cain and the rest have a disconnect frome who they are. I feel more sorry for them then the bigots in the tea party.

Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Beck, et al really are non-factors in national politics, motivating only their base. Most people don’t listen to them.
If the Republicans want to beat Obama in 2012, there is no way Palin will be the their candidate. The Democrats are not afraid of her, the Republicans are. Her own party doesn’t like her! She could cost them the election.
Personally, I hope she runs in 2012. I think we have only seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her stupidity. And people who continue to believe she is of relevance are only prolonging her 15 minutes of fame which should have been up a long time ago. I’m not a Palin hater. I just think she is out of her league.

Just compare Sarah Palin’s knowledge to the knowledge of Ron Paul. That tells you automatically that Sarah is not qualified to be president.
Also, regarding the person who said that Sarah Palin was a good governor — I dispute that claim. For one reason, an excellent human rights organization in Alaska that serves as a watchdog was very unhappy with her as a governor and even sued her.

Wow, every possible lie about the President has been presented except the birther one. And every possible myth about the great Sarah Plain is also here. Does no one think for themselves? The President, with zero help from Republicans, got more legislation passed in two years than any other President. His programs have created one million jobs, more than Bush did in 8 years. He has put the war spending back on the books, so of course it looks bad. It IS bad. It was bad in 2005, 06, 07 and 08, too but Bush hid the true costs to make himself look better. People have health care. Like it or not=, we are all Americans, and health care is not some evil force.
As far as Mrs. Palin, who cares what she thinks? She hires speech writers (she uses a teleprompter as often as the President, despite what her fans think) who give her idiotic things to say. She never bothers to check anything, so she ends up having to clarify what she meant, every time. Is that really who you want in the White House? Someone with a platform who isn’t smart enough to hire intelligent writers? She has the money, loads of it. She thinks that creating a stir is enough. I guess as a citizen, it’s plenty. As an adult running for POTUS, it is not nearly enough. She’s had 2 years to refine her act, and learn some history, but she has just gotten meaner and more divisive. She dislikes half of the country, and makes no effort to win us over. So who cares? She will not be President, thank God.

IMHO, too much is being made of Palin’s influence on the political scene. unfortunately, in the Nov 2010 election, too many voters stayed home – to their credit, Sarah’s supporters/teapartiers showed up in mass; therefore, it is assumed that the majority of voters support who/what Sarah supports. Not true. In a general election, the other 75% of voters will elect candidates who are very different from Sarah’s picks. Republicans who are trying to get thru a primary may be concerned about her influence, but candidates who make it to biggie (2012) general election will face a more educated, informed, and rational voting public, regardless of political bent. Sarah is devisive and promotes a devisive agenda and devisive candidtates. She’s a mean, hateful, racist, narcissistic, jealous uneducated, lazy, immature woman who so wants to be more important than the smart handsome Black man with the funny name who won an election that she, as pretty as she is, and an old cantankerous white man could not win. She and her fiollowers can’t get past that simple fact becuase it’s not the way the world, as they know and like it, should be. Change is hard. Biases and bigotry are had to admit and get past. I get all of that, but the country will never be/look like the good old days when only white men ruled pretty much everything and everybody.

Palin supporters are in a minority as ice is to a glass of water and will be the solid force that will put any candidate she backs over the top. The left leaning commenters on any website about Palin can never debate any issue Palin speaks about. They only make it a personal attack of either Palin or her supporters. Your belittling of Sarah Palin using words that belittle the majority of Americans..Present your debate on issues not belittling small town people like her that hunt, fish, or did not attend an Ivy League school which is the majority of Americans…hence voters.

Bachmann is a Palin clone. I would love to hear these two debate without using the words exceptional, freedom, commonsense, forefather, drill, reload, straight talk, maverick, doggone, racist, God, teleprompter, or any other buzzword that populates their speeches.
What a pair of empty barrels! They are threats to their own party because they chase away independent voters and most certainly moderate or centrist voters. You need these demographics to win an election.
The people defending these two are even more hilarious. You can tell on these blogs who watches and reads more than right-wing or left wing news (their own viewpoint).
Run baby run! America loves a good train wreck!

I agree with you about reading/watching left or right wing news. I’m sure you enjoy MSNBC and really miss Obermann. Bachmann is a clone? That’s shows how uninformed you are. The Dems made Bachmann’s defeat a priority in 2010. What happened? Her margin of victory increased in good old liberal MN.
I don’t think either Palin or Bachmann will be the standard barer in 2012, but both are strong voices in the party, much like Maxine Waters and Hiliary are for the Dems.

Retired Soldier,
I don’t watch MSNBC or CNN and I can’t stand Olbermann either. I am happy Olbermann was fired.v One less loud mouth!
Midterm elections often swing to the party not in power, and generally there is a low turnout in comparison with Presidential election years. So I attribute what happened in Minnesota and all other successful Tea Party candidate wins to that more than their individual credentials or appeal. I think the philosophy is “vote the bums out”.
I agree that Palin and Bachmann are not the standard bearers for the Republican Party but are strong voices. I just think they have painted themselves into a corner and will have too difficult of a time appealing to the “middle” at this point. Bachmann and Palin are a lot alike in their comments and criticism of the current political climate and administration. In order for them to be viable candidates, they need much broader appeal, and neither is taking the steps so far to energize anyone but their base. Time is ticking. That’s why I called them clones.
I am an internet junkie, and I read and listen to stuff from both sides. My critiques are about electability, and in my opinion those two are following the same path. I am a centrist, a little left leaning with social issues and a little right leaning religiously. They need my vote.
Have a great day, and thank you for your service to the country!

I don’t see Sarah Palin as a serious contender for the Republican presidential nomination, but she has a function in the race. She raises money and causes the hatred in many lefties to come to the surface. I don’t think at this point she is susceptible to the media taunts. She laughs all the way to the bank and lends her weight to candidates, also hated by the left, who can win. This “ignorant redneck” is playing the left and getting rich while she does it.

If I am President Obama, I am down on my knees every night thanking God for smiting the Republican Party with Sarah Palin, and thereby ensuring my election to a second term when I shouldn’t have a ghost of a chance of being re-elected. That ditzy, airheaded, bigmouthed money grubbing self-promoter, TV reality show star (doesn’t that just sum it all up? – a reality TV star?) is determined to interject herself into the Republican presidential nomination contest, and drive the intellegent, clear thinking Independents right back into the arms of Obama. Palin on the stage and in debates with Romney, Gingrich, Huckabee, and others will be high comedy, and it will bring those candidates collectively down. Look at what happened in Delaware. That airhead O’Donnell helped the Dems take a Senate seat they had no chance of winning this year. Get ready for the same thing on the grand stage for the Presidency. Palin’s fans will push her cause come hell or high water just because of this Sarah reality cult (think TV reality stars, Dancing With The Stars type fans – not a whole lot of substance, just knee-jerk emtional, we know what we like, and giving real thought to all of these issues is just too much work because The Bachelor is coming on now). We serious Pubs can only hope that some big financial opportunity will entice her away, because she will follow the money wherever it leads – we all know that, because she ditched the Alaska governor’s seat half way through it because she smelled big money. Maybe she will get an offer to star in a movie, or have her own prime time TV sitcom (those crazy Palins and their crazy antics in a family sitcom based in Alaska – Bill Cosby look out), or maybe Hefner will offer her $10 million to pose nude in Playboy. We can only hope. She couldn’t make that much dough if she was President for 20 years.

Palin quit her job as Mayor of Wasilla to be Governor of Alaska. She abandoned that job to run for VP. She quit that job after she forced a loss for McCain and found out she could make more money being a quasi-celebrity. Her ‘moral’ values include her seventeen year old daughter getting pregnant by her boyfriend, under her own nose, in her own house. She is as ignorant as most of her followers – who follow her because of her ignorance! She has no platform, no training, no background, and no education – you betcha! By by God, she can see Russia from her house, which obviously proves her diplomatic ability. Alaskans are rich from oil subsidies, not from her governance.

Last Man Standing,
You and others with your brain are the reason your group will never be taken seriously. To still insist on calling Obama a Muslim. And if he were, what is your point?
Why is it that you have to attack an individual and not what they stand for (policies)?
Does it make you feel good to post the comments you do?
