Just in from the Associated Press:
The daughter of Gov. Nathan Deal has transferred Habersham County property to her father that had been used as collateral in a failed sporting goods venture.
Habersham County records show Carrie Deal Wilder and her husband Clint Wilder had lived on the nearly 16-acre Habersham County property. The couple declared bankruptcy last year, leaving Nathan Deal and his wife, Sandra, on the hook for some $2.3 million in loans.
County property records show Carrie Deal transferred the property to her father for $10 on Dec. 31.
Jimmy Allen, who oversees personal finances in Deal’s blind trust, said he expects the property will be sold to help satisfy some $1.35 million in debt he incurred from backing Wilder Outdoors.

Well two attorneys in the very office that investigates ethics violations made by GA elected officials were themselves fired & brought up on ethics violations for misuse of office & government resources…so it starts at the top…Good thing is the ethics board is all over any sense of impropriety and shows no partisanship…of course she transferred prop so its not subject to liens as a result of her affairs, and of course DEAL knew, but the good thing is the ethics office knows…so have faith in the process, right…? yeah…that’s the ticket..the process…soon she will be a state employee anyway, as Wheel & Deal will find some position for her & justify the rationale for using tax payer $ to pay her to never show up…hypocritical system, but what are you gonna do about it…

If Deal was a democrat, especially a black democrat, and did this. The GOP would be howling for his head.
All y’all who are saying that this all above-board and “must be OK with the creditor” are just talking out your behinds. If the land was collateral for a loan, the daughter could have, and should have, just turned it over to the creditor. Not give it to her daddy.
This stinks. But this is Georgia and the GOP had no problems with that awful Oakey Woods deal, so expect this (and much worse) to sail by without any complaints from the Republicans and Tea-Party Palinistas.

For those of you who don’t know what im talking about-An entrepreneur is a person who has possession of a new enterprise, venture or idea and is accountable for the inherent risks and the outcome. Most of you who post here would like someone else to be responsible for the work you only want to pick the fruits.

It’s amazing that you can get a job as Governor of a State with bad credit, when to work as a customer service rep at some companies you have to have at least a 600 credit score. Only in Georgia!!!! Looks like the state of GA got a bad Deal….

Just like Georgia to vote a man into office with personal finances issues. How do you expect this man to handle an entire state? He is already talking about cutting funding for programs that are so neeeded such as domestic violence. I am glad I didn’t vote for his so I have nothing to regret. And all of you want to talk our president. Please people!

I’m no Deal fan, and I’m no real estate genius, so my hope is that the Governor uses the land to actually pay off the debt, and not find some way to make money off it at the taxpayers’ expense (i.e. make the State buy it for some insanely high price and then let it sit there unused).

I’ve only had personal experience with 5 people filing for bankruptcy, and FOUR of them were committing fraud. It’s standard procedure, and their attorneys all knew. Those federal courtrooms are FULL of frauds, but the Feds don’t even bother to verify the simplest little details. The best you can do, as a creditor, is to raise holy hell and register objections that will be in the public records.

Let’s see if us “misinformed” can get this straight…. Governor Deal’s daughter and son-n-law approached a local bank and asked for a loan where they were turned down not once, but twice, even with Gov Deal’s guarantee. They then went across to the street to another bank where…. Drum roll please, Casey Cagle, the Lt. Governor, was a board member, and the newly appointed Regents Board member, Philip Wilheit who, BIGGER DRUM ROLL PLEASE, was the Chairman of the Board at BB&T. Of course the loan was approved and continued to grow as it ended up moving to another bank at a later time. Nope, doesn’t seem unethical or strange to me. Maybe just stupid

If this transaction is wrong, the bankruptcy court will seize the property to satisfy Deal’s daughter and son-in-law debts. Creditors have competent lawyers to investigate and petition the courts so what is the problem people. People don’t know how the courts works and are quick to say this smells.

First, I think Deal will be a lousy governor and is not a true leader. That said, this story is really of no concern to the public as the transaction is to resolve his debt issue. Deal’s debt was known when the people of Georgia elected him. As a number of people have noted, he is taking ownership of the asset pledged against the loan. I would also guess there are some tax and legal advantages to constructing the transfer this way. This is not a poltical story.
What we need to be more concerned about are his decisions on tax increases. The proposed tax changes will raise taxes for individual (including the reduction in income taxes) while reducing business taxes. Stay tuned!

You mention the similarity of the current governors in GA and FL and ethics violations. Don’t forget the former governor of GA. How many governors do you know that get a state legislature to pass a law that were benefit only the governor, saving him thousands of dollars in taxes? Not to mention the state funds spent on GO Fish developing sites surrounded by the former governor’s land.
Voters in these states vote ideology instead of ethics.

Has anyone thought that since Deal signed for her loans, the land was transferred to him as partial repayment for the debts he’ll incur making good on those loans? I don’t know if this is the case, but that sounds like a more plausible explanation.

So a lot of you folks think Democrats are not crooks. Deal has not been found guilty of anything but the ethics committee is looking. Anyone can file an ethics complaint on an elected official. Last count Sarah Palin had 56 filed and all 56 were BS. That just another stupid trick to go after politician. There are crooks on both side and you see more going to jail with a D by their names then R. Deal is responsible for his kids debt and he will have to pay so why don’t he get their land. My kid didn’t pay for his car so I had to, and I took it back. The ignorant of you Libs is unreal.

“Figure it out” has got this right. The man is trying to help out his daughter. Something that many people would do. There is nothing shady going on here, and the AJC should be ashamed of themselves. What happened to real research? These days the media will report on every detail of a politician’s life, and just let the reader draw their own conclusions. Any time you read something in the paper you assume it is bad or underhanded, but unless you have an understanding of bankruptcy law, you really aren’t qualified to draw ANY conclusions.

North over South… What did you mean by the South shall raise again? I’m assuming you meant rise again. This is the problem that most intelligent people have with the South; a large majority of you are undercover back woods racist who will side with the Republican Party regardless of their stance on an issue. When it comes to politics most Republicans only see blue and red not right and wrong. Georgian’s need to wake up, just because a person is registered as a Republican does not mean he/she is the best candidate for the job. I can also say that not all Democrat’s are upstanding citizens but in this case you have to admit Roy Barnes was the best person for the job. It’s amazing to me that most Republicans in the South claim to be Christians. A true Christian treats everyone equally and wants what’s best for their neighbor not just themselves.

Just my opinion, heck , he resigned from the House to avoid ethics charges, and we great people of Georgia endorsed him. Maybe he could be the guy that accrediates the Atlanta City School system. Would probably fit in real well with his top notch ethics!

Now that the property is in the Gov.’s hands, buyers will line up for the sale. They will pay top price. In return they receive the deed “and other unknown considerations.” The property is just a legitimate avenue through which to pass the money. Someone needs to monitor just how quick this unmarketable property now sales. Also the buyer will be some unknown mystery investor from out of state. But if you don’t hang your hat under the Gold Dome, you are not suppose to be smart enough to see this one coming.

You people are just plain stupid. There are bankruptcy laws that protect creditors and the person/ persons filing for bankruptcy. This would have to have been approved by the bankruptcy trustee appointed to the case. The author of this article should be ashamed for writing such drivel. As you all should know, the AJC has become a sham of a paper by sensationalizing stories. Those of you that are educated would remember this from middle school history. The more hits the more AJC gets paid…simple as that. And you people are buying it up. Please use some common sense.

Don’t you just love the “this stinks” response? Clearly, it springs from the mind of yet another victim of the public school monopoly. The transaction as described is boringly routine in this type of case. To the liberal mind (do these words belong in the same sentence?) it is part of the “moth to the flame” reflex to cast aspersions on anything remotely related to a conservative. Keep it up dudes – y’all have a lot more elections to lose.
