UGA editor resigns after alcohol-fueled visit with Nathan Deal, Sonny Perdue

Note to journalism students: Ernest Hemingway lied. Boozing came after the work. Not during.

The editor-in-chief of the University of Georgia’s campus newspaper has resigned after being ejected from the president’s box – and a visit with Gov.-elect Nathan Deal and Gov. Sonny Perdue — during Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech.

Alcohol was said to be involved. Neither Perdue nor Deal are drinkers.

In an article posted in The Red and Black, the daily newspaper, editor Daniel Burnett said he had been at a tailgate party before his visit to the prestigious booth of UGA President Michael Adams:

“It’s my understanding his behavior was disruptive enough to the point he was asked to leave,” said Meg Amstutz, executive assistant to the president.

Burnett told The Red & Black he responded, “Yeah, that’s fine,” before walking out of the box without further confrontation.

“I think someone smelled the vodka,” Burnett said Monday. “I was talking to people, I don’t believe I was being disruptive. But they have the right to escort anybody out. I don’t have a problem with that.”

A spokesman for Perdue described the governor’s encounter with the student editor as “friendly and very brief.” A Deal representative said the governor-elect noticed nothing strange.

“[Burnett] asked to take a picture with Nathan, and Nathan did that. That was Nathan’s only interaction with him,” spokesman Brian Robinson said Monday. “Whatever happened that led him to be asked to leave, did not happen in front of Nathan.”

While we’re on the topic of UGA and strong drink, the Athens Banner-Herald reports the following:

Former University of Georgia athletic director Damon Evans is scheduled to be arraigned on a driving under the influence charge at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Atlanta Municipal Court, according to the Atlanta Solicitor’s Office.

Ever seen how much alcohol is consumed at political functions such as fundraisers? Perdue and Deal are probably so used to drunk people that they truly didn’t notice anything. Heck, given the anguish Deal’s family has put him through, he probably had a few himself.

Perhaps Sonny could have been a more effective Gov and Deal could have better represented Geogia had they taken a drink. Our state is in worse shape now than when they took office.

From the students to the athletes to the athletic director to now this. Alcohol is making an a$$ out of my alma mater. I don’t much care for Michael Adams but if he could somehow rid the university of it’s drunken party image I would be very pleased.

What was this kid doing, interviewing for the AD position??

Yet another UGA story where the Red & Black are referring to being RED from embarrassment having given UGA another BLACK eye from bad publicity.

Whatever happened, the damage is done. Why pour gasoline on a fire? Good move, Mr. Governor.

@SECWasteManagement. Did you even go to college? Students and alcohol problems go hand in hand. You’re acting like this is a big story. So maybe the kid got drunk and made an ass of himself. Big deal, who cares. People get drunk all the time before, during, and after games. As far as it being an off the field problem, he didn’t play football you uneducated bottom feeder. As for me, yes I did go to school AND play football in Athens.

Deal and Perdue are non-drinkers, but will ask for the local beer distributors to “donate” product when it comes to their fund raising parties and inaugural ball. Then have the courtsey to veto any Sunday sales legislation that comes through.

The real story has been missed. The agenda of having Perdue and Deal in the president’s box at a ballgame is money. UGA’s Adams was working for a big payday in next year’s budget. The editor must have asked a question that resulted in his execution. Oops, I meant ejection. Yea, right.

Who cares. The Red & Black is an independent student newspaper. It has not been a part of UGA since 1980. They simply cover UGA news. He does not represent UGA or the atheltic department but an independent newspaper. I am sure if any other journalists were there and drunk they would have been asked to leave. The kid made a mistake and it appears the University handled this as they should have.

“As for me, yes I did go to school AND play football in Athens.”

If it weren’t for former UGA athletes, the AJC forums would die of atrophy–it seems at least a quarter of the people who post on here played football for Georgia.

For the record, I went to Georgia and did not play football, so I’m in the minority. I did letter in both baseball and women’s gymnastics, however.

Whatever! The REAL story should be whether or not Deal is gonna support education in this state. Everybody knows that we drink before, during, after games. Its not new! We’re the #1 party school, what do people expect! Besides, like someone else said, if I was in the same company, I would HAVE to take a drink!
