Bill would bar all illegal immigrants from Ga. universities

From the Associated Press:

A Republican state lawmaker has introduced legislation that would ban all Georgia’s public colleges and universities from accepting illegal immigrants.

The Board of Regents last month adopted a policy under which the university system’s five most competitive schools are effectively barred from accepting illegal immigrant applicants beginning in fall 2011.

The legislation prefiled on Wednesday by state Rep. Tom Rice, a Norcross Republican, would prohibit all of the university system’s 35 schools from admitting illegal immigrants.

Rice said he did not think the Regents went far enough.

Immigration is expected to be a hot topic at the state Capitol when lawmakers reconvene in January.

At the very least, this sends a xenophobic signal to foreign companies contemplating moving to Georgia that they are not welcome here. Way to go Republicans, keep us mired in an economic morass.

Great idea. Make sure that all Georgians, including immigrants, remain ignorant. This goes well with the Republican plan to destroy public education. Also goes well with the ideal of attracting only multi-national companies which hire uneducated peasant labor. An educated workforce is truly a frightening concept. They just might figure out that they are being lied to constantly, stolen from, and pillaged by the powers that be.

What part if illegal don’t you understand, Dan? Legal immigrants, people with green cards, all here legally, work visas, etc. If you are so pro-illegal immigrant, please invite several to come and move in with you so that you can support them. There are laws but then I guess you are not in favor of enforcing laws on the books so don’t whine or complain if you are ever the victim of a crime after all they are just laws and no one abides by them. Good grief. Put the laws on the books and watch the illegals leave the state as in Arizona. Legal immigrants are more than welcome here just not those who choose to come and “rob” this country of its resources….healthcare, education, etc. What a concept…legal immigration. It has worked for many years until the liberals wanted open borders…everyone, come on down..Sorta like the Price is Right. If you think that this is so unfair, just try going to any other country as an illegal immigrant…see how far you get. You probably voted as a Democrat..how’s the hope and change working so far?

They are not legally in this country. They are breaking the law. What is so damn hard about understanding illegal. This will not stop companies from moving to GA.

Sheer idiocy. We are NOT talking about “immigrants”, we are talking about ILLEGAL ALIENS. Even democrats should be able to discern the difference. Wait! I forgot!
Democrats know that illegal aliens are really “undocumented democrats”!

The only problem with this, is that there is no recourse for children brought here and raised from a early age by illegal immigrant parents. Maybe if the DREAM act was passed…, but go on, blame the children for the sins of there fathers.

One doesn’t have to be xenophobic to support this legislation–just a realist. As a Democrat who supports social programs for those in need–I draw the line at using my tax dollars to fund what has become a ‘culture of siphoning’ by people here illegally.

I really feel sorry for anyone falling into the Rep. vs. Dem. game. It’s just as mindless and stupid as Crips vs. Bloods or Vampires vs Werewolves. It seems to me the only people that get excited about those concepts are people with no minds of their own, or waaayyy too much free time on their hands.

Back on Topic. If this is truly aimed at Illegal Immigrants, then I agree with it. If you make it uncomfortable and difficult to be Illegal eventually they will do what it takes to become LEGAL.

What stinks is that we even need a bill to be passed for this purpose. Should be a “no brainer”. You should also be a citizen of this country to get a job, buy real estate, use the medical facilities, get a driver’s liscense and the list goes on. Must be really tough to become a LEGAL citizen of the United States if so many bypass this step, sneak in, and start living off the government. It wasn’t too difficult for my great grandparents. And no, they didn’t speak english when they arrived either, but they gladly learned, and I’m glad they did.

For all the legion of anti-immigrant buffoons:

Since the only problem you seem to have with illegal immigrants is that they are illegal, I guess you don’t have a problem with the son of a Saudi oil sheik coming to the U.S. on a legal education visa so he can learn how to build bombs to kill Americans.

After all, he’s legal, so he must be OK.

Sons and daughters of hard-working Mexicans who came here for no other reason than to support their families but didn’t have the money or time to wade through our hopelessly overburdened immigration process, they’ve gotta go.

The fact that these people have busted their rear ends and done jobs most of you mindless lemmings would never considering doing, too bad. They’re illegal, that’s all that matters.

Exactly what makes one immigrant legal and another illegal? Some faceless bureaucrat saying yes to one and no to another?

You right wing types have a very low opinion of government, but you put all sorts of faith in evil government bureaucrats to decide who gets in legally and who doesn’t. Hypocrisy, anyone?

As the song says, “Don’t wanna be an American Idiot…”

There’s way too many folks who do.

So if you are a follower of Jesus, the answer is no.

Prohibiting entry into colleges is a good start. But if you really want to see illegals leaving voluntarily do the following: (1) Prohibit entry into K-12 also, and (2) fine employers $5,000.00 per illegal immigrant they employ.

It’s not fair that equally qualified student from out of state are turn away because in State ILLEGAL immigrant get first choice. And if your brought here as a child, then why at 18 apply for LEGAL Citizenship. If We had A national Social security Card it would probably stop so many from crossing our borders. Or just maybe fine employer HUGE FINES in the Hundreds of Thousand for hiring ILLEGALS Immigrants they would stop coming here ILLEGALLY.

To blue_moon916 @ 7:15 p.m…. THANK YOU for being a REASONABLE Democrat who understands the difference in this bill, which would enforce laws and protect Americans, and the panicky, paranoid, name-calling liberals that have hijacked your party. You, as a Democrat, are somebody that me, as a conservative (and millions of others) can and will negotiate with about policies that shape our nation. The liberal elitists like Pelosi, Clinton, John Lewis, Joe Biden, Howard Dean, Harry Reid, etc. do NOT speak for the majority of people, including Democrats.

To Dan and pn and all the other panicky liberals who call us “xenophobes”, I ask you to review the proposed bill and the comments of the posters… but to reiterate… this goes for ILLEGAL LAW-BREAKERS, NOT LEGAL ALIENS AND THOSE SEEKING OFFICIAL CITIZENSHIP. I agree with blue_moon916, that we as a nation can and should do more to help those in need in our country, but ONLY those who are LEGAL CITIZENS. If you have such little respect for my country that you won’t follow the proper steps to immigrate here and become a citizen or AT LEAST get a green card or work visa…. well, then, I don’t give two craps about you, your family, your kids or your lost job. You can go back to your birth nation and start over… come here LEGALLY, do things the RIGHT WAY, and we as a country will help you… try to sneak over ILLEGALLY and circumvent the system, well then, we will throw you out on your a**.

Not being mean, not being unreasonable, not being a xenophobe…. i’m just being a realist who realizes that our economy cannot support millions of illegal immigrants. So to those who protest every time any legislation comes up to try to keep track of people and determine the legals from the illegals… shut your mouths and start working toward a REAL SOLUTION.

God bless America, and all those people who have come here LEGALLY to help make our nation great.

And as for Orange09…. you are assuming that all foreigners are just going to become criminals?

I happen to know a LOT of people who have immigrated to the U.S. LEGALLY and have built wonderful, successful careers, and their kids’ lives are infinitely better for it. Let’s not paint all immigrants with the same brush… the legal ones that work hard, pay taxes, and play by the rules are fine… the scumbags who think so little of our nation’s laws that they are just “not going to bother with becoming legal”… well, they can go to Hades for all I care… we don’t need them!!!

Believe me, when laws like this are enacted, the illegal pipeline will shut down to Georgia. It will move to other states. That is the best that can be hoped for at this point. The federal government’s lack of courage to enforce our borders is the crux for this mess. It is left to the states to act.

Dan Matthews what do you not understand about Illegal. They broke the law by coming here and putting themselves in this position. What about the legal immigrants they go through the classes and pay their fees? You are probably part of the problem by employing illegals to save money which is hurting all legal citizens they abide by the rule of law.

We have to educate them up until high-school but not after that. Your ideology is also a slap in the face for foreign exchange students the apply legally to GA institutions. The board of regents doesn’t really care if they are legal or illegal because its more money for the school with higher enrollment which is also part of the problem

As for California being kooks…. read the state’s history, it’s founding. Spain settled there first. Braceros were brought from Mexico in great numbers in the 1940’s for the agricultural industry. California’s situation is much different that Georgia’s. Mexicans are recent arrivals here. There is still time to save this state (maybe).

Deal with reality, not politics. The facts are there are kids here whose parents brought them to this country illegally. Denying them college admission isn’t going to make them disappear. A certain proportion of these kids have gone to school, succeeded and excelled. They are ready to contribute to society and want to get an education and are willing to pay for it. By denying them admission you keep them from advancing, you keep them from contributing to their fullest potential and you perpetuate existing stereotypes and create a permanent underclass. I can’t understand what is so wrong with allowing anyone who has the ability to further their education the chance to do so.
