Before heading to Savannah, Democratic nominee for governor Roy Barnes stopped by to talk to Frank Ski and Wanda Smith at V-103, one of Atlanta’s most popular radio stations – with a large African-American audience.
Right off the bat, Ski played an ad that – the radio host declared – Barnes had backed with a whole lot of money on his station. The clip had Republican rival Nathan Deal using the phrase “ghetto grandmothers.”

Democrat Roy Barnes told V-103 listeners Thursday that President Barack Obama encouraged him to miss his August visit to Atlanta. JohnnyCrawford, Jcrawford@ajc.com
“What did you think about that?” Ski asked.
Said Barnes:
“I thought it showed a great deal of insensitivity and a lack of knowledge about our state. It’s offensive to me, and I can just imagine how offensive it is to others that would hear it. What does that mean? I don’t know what that means, but I’ve got a good idea that it’s not very favorable.”
The Democratic nominee talked about other topics for a while. Barnes called Zell Miller a “very progressive governor” – a bit of an inside joke, given that “progressive” is the new “liberal.”
And he condemned a very particular outside group playing in the governor’s contest:
“Never in Georgia’s history have we had an outside group such as the Republican Governors Association come in – and I think they’re going to end up seven or eight million dollars. Easily. An outside group that comes in and does nothing but distort the record that I had as governor.”
But ultimately, Ski got down to business, with the question on the minds of many of his listeners: “Did you distance yourself from President Barack Obama when he visited Georgia?”
Said Barnes:
“No. And I’ve said this several times. The president called me the day after the primary, which was on a Wednesday. I didn’t expect to win the primary without a runoff, so we had had three full weeks of schedule that already was set up.
“The day he was coming, on Monday, I had 80 sheriffs that were endorsing me throughout Georgia. So he called me on the day after, and – he’s got a great sense of humor, by the way. He said, ‘Congratulations.’ He says, ‘I’ll come down and cuss you if you need me to.’ And I said, ‘No, I don’t want you to come down and cuss me.’
“And he laughed, and I said, ‘Listen, you’re going to be here Monday.’ I said, ‘I’ve got 80 sheriffs that are endorsing me. Tell me what you want.’
“He said, ‘I want you to go ahead with the sheriffs.’
“And I said, ‘Well, I’ll cancel it if you want me to.’
“He said, ‘I want you to go ahead with the sheriffs.’ He said, ‘Listen, you can always see me.’ He said, ‘I’m coming down there to raise some money on the national party,’ and he said, ‘You go on with your sheriffs.’
“Let me tell you this. This is the president of the United States. And the disrespect that he has been shown by the Republican Governors Association and by all, really, Republican establishment is astounding….”
***
Mark Rountree and Landmark Communications, a GOP political strategy firm, released another round of polling on Wednesday that showed the governor’s race largely frozen in place, with Republican Nathan Deal just below what he needs to escape another four weeks of campaigning.
Rountree adds this:
Landmark asked voters how they would vote between Deal and Barnes in the event of a runoff election. 51 percent of voters chose Deal and 43 percent chose Barnes – an 8-point margin.
Rountree said, “Libertarians decidedly come down on the side of Deal. Third party voters say they would support Deal over Barnes by a 3 to 1 margin.”
The poll was based on exchanges with 1,686 “active voters” on Tuesday. MOE is +/- 2.4 percentage points.

As I’ve said elsewhere, I’m fairly well connected with Libertarians in Georgia (having been a former Local Affiliate Chair and member of the State Executive Committee and all…), and I simply do NOT see Rountree’s numbers on Libertarians supporting Deal. In fact, I’ve seen just the opposite – an overwhelming number of Libertarians who know that Roy Barnes was MORE fiscally conservative than Sonny Perdue (we tend not to listen to the RGA’s rhetoric) and plan to support him should John Monds not be in the runoff. Our reasoning is simple: A Split Government tends (in the long term) to mitigate the abuses of EITHER Party.
The Republicans, with their lack of understanding of how laws are created, continue to implicate their own House Speaker David Ralston (who is unopposed next week, and to my knowledge his Speakership will be unopposed next month) in their anti-Barnes paranoia. With GOP control of the General Assembly – which is absolutely NOT in question for at least two years, and is actually expected to INCREASE slightly next week – Roy Barnes simply will not have bills sent to him such as what the Republicans are saying he will do. Remember, the Governor can ONLY sign bills or veto them, he can NOT write them. If Roy Barnes DOES veto a bill Republicans truly want, they have or nearly have enough votes in the Assembly to override such a veto.
In other words, Roy Barnes will be nearly as effectively neutered as Governor as Mark Taylor was as Lt Governor when Eric Johnson was “the de facto Lt Governor”, as he likes to proclaim.
Republican paranoia over Roy Barnes is nothing more than that: paranoia.

Neither Nice Nathan nor King Roy have solutions to Georgia’s problems because the source is in Washington with the most anti business, anti free enterprise, anti American, and corrupt maladministration in American history, I intend to vote for John Monds on Tuesday and hope there is a runoff so that King Roy will have to spend a few more million of his ambulance chasing money before being crushed by Nice Nathan. Yes, Nice Nathan is ethically challenged and would probably be ineffective as gov. But King Roy is a lawyer. He’d put his arm up a snake arse if he thought there was a nickel up there. Liberals, lawyers, and labor unions are the root cause of most of our nation’s problems. Don’t vote for anyone on Tuesday. Vote against King Roy.

It is shame that maybe a Republican can probably steal the election in Georgia. Also, how did the majority of America elect the President and then turn their backs on him like they have? He won by a large margin and it took all ages, races and social/economic backgrounds to do something like that and yet he has been just tossed aside. It stinks

“Ghetto Grandmothers” are the mothers of young black girls that have babies and whose baby daddies are not around, so they end up taking care (a lot of the time) of their grandchildren while the daughter is out doing who-knows-what. It doesn’t have to be a pejoritive, actually, but it’s used as a not-so-subtle code to let white conservatives know that Deal is on their side, you know, that he “thinks” like they do. Race has been a big factor in nearly every election where blacks had the ability to vote. There was a time when they couldn’t, so it’s a pretty big deal (oops) even today. Barnes certainly knows what the term means, but he can’t say he does. It’s funny to see the visage of a very young Barnes on the cover of today’s Loaf. I think the momentum is with Deal, especially since a lot of racists don’t exactly trumpet themselves before they vote.

What is with this “give more to business” rubbish from the Republicans. Businesses are already making record profits so why in the world should we give them and the super rich more tax breaks.
Since Obama has taken office the stock market is up 45% and corporate profits are way up. Yet in the same period unemployment has also increased. What in the world makes people think giving businesses even more tax breaks will make them better corporate citizens? All they will do is make more profit, pay their CEO’s even more money and still try and lower workers wages and benefits/outsource jobs. Wake up Republicans voters who make less than 250k agi, you are voting for a party who wants to screw you……….

Just like a conservative blogger wrote a week ago, “Deal is a crook, but he’s our crook”.
Dems need to get out and vote. The Right Wing is telling folks not to vote, spending huge amounts of money toward mis-information overload against the Dems, and attacking our President as if they had NO hand in the mess that he is trying to fix.
Deal is a joke, a crook, and from those remarks I consider him a white trash thug himself. Roy cares about this state and the people in this state. He has many friends of ALL races and is fiscally sound. So come on folks, please get out and vote. Don’t let these hoodlums spend all of this money just to lie to you and make you feel like they will help you.
Remember, the majority of Republicans are Narcissistic, they care about themselves, their families, and their close friends that look like them. They don’t give a damn about anyone else. Look at their policies, anti-gay, anti-affirmative action (minorities), pro-life (you can’t choose but they can), cut taxes for the rich (the so-called trickle down never works plus it has been proven that tax-cuts don’t create jobs), smaller government (liars: under Bush the government grew more than any other President), deficit reduction (again, under Bush we went from a surplus to a deficit).

If Deal is elected Governor, will (should) he approve and sign the annual budget bill which will include state tax dollars for his vehicle salvage business sanctioned by the state’s Department of Revenue and tax dollars he’s paid to lease property to the state of Georgia through the Department of Administrative Services?
How will he handle that? Even if he says he’ll put these interests in a blind trust, should he continue to receive this money? Since Sonny Perdue never put his business interests in a blind trust like every previous Governor in modern history has done, why should Nathan Deal do the same? Has anyone heard him in the 9 debates or TV ads say he’ll divest himself of those interests?
How should he handle this inherent and obvious conflcit of interest? Does this situation negate the ability of the Governor to impose and strictly enforce Executive Branch sanctions for state employees –including employees and officials of the Governor’s office — from engaging in conflicts of interests?
Who out there wishes to speak on his behalf and on how he’ll resolve this problem he’s got?

On 11/3, I’m quite sure that you Repubs, Tea Partiers, Evangelicals, and general all-around “librul” haters will be so pleased with yourselves. After all, you will have just elected Nathan Deal, a no-nothing, do-nothing, ex-congressman who for 18 YEARS did nothing of note in his time in D.C. and who resigned to avoid ethics investigations. Oh, and by the way, also deeply in debt and hungry to find a new revenue source to get him out of that debt. But, he’s got his finger on your trigger all right. He knows how numbingly blind and stupid you are. He knows that all he has to do is wrap himself in the flag, show the grandkids in a few sappy commercials, tell you lies about his “honesty”, and tell you that he’s fighting those libruls and you will fall over yourselves like a bunch of used dominos. He knows you won’t think. He knows you won’t ask questions. He knows that he can manipulate you and your scary little brains into whatever he wants you to do. I have to hand it to him. He’s a lot smarter than you are, which isn’t saying much now is it? And after he’s elected governor and the indictments come and he’s forced to leave office I can imagine that it will be real hard to find any of you willing to admit that you made it all possible. Good job! P.T. Barnum had a saying about suckers and fools. Welcome to that club, morons.
By the way, I’m an independent. I vote for the greater good. Barnes has his faults and his past, no denying that. However, to choose a do-nothing crook over someone with the experience and political acumen that Barnes has just because in your twisted pretzel logic you are really casting your vote against Obama is a travesty of the highest kind. And an example of the most base kind of stupidity. You will receive the governor that you deserve. Too bad the rest of us will have to suffer too. Fools.

If the majority of municipalities were run by Black folks who while they might not be technically racist but enjoy being around folks that are black, so they tend to hire black people you probably won’t get a job there. Jeff,
“If Roy Barnes DOES veto a bill Republicans truly want, they have or nearly have enough votes in the Assembly to override such a veto.”
That is not true. There are no where near enough votes in the state Senate to over ride the a veto. There are enough in the House. The bottom line would be if Barnes could effectively block any legislation. Also, do not forget that the Governor in this state has a line item veto. The governor can change any peace of legislation by simply marking out the intent line of the legislation and then redirecting the money to some place else.

My dad, brother, 2 best friends, and my cousin are ALL lawyers. I have a MBA on top of that so I understand more words that your limited brain can handle.
Now to your “RECUSE” statement. Roy Barnes was representing defendants in those cases. When a lawyer “recuses” him or her self it is usually when they have been appointed to represent someone and there is a conflict. Those clients came to Roy, he took their case and went before some judges that he had appointed. Big deal. Everyone has a job to do and will be held accountable for their actions (including the judges). Roy is a former Governor, and they appoint judges. He did no ask for those judges to hear his case, they are picked by the municipality. Lastly, the prosecution has a chance before trial to raise any concerns that it may have. Apparently, neither the prosecution or the judges for that matter had any problem with Roy trying those cases. The fact is, the prosecutors see those judges a lot more than the defense lawyers in most cases. So the prosecutors generally have a BETTER relationship with the judges than even ole Roy.

JR, we do know what we are doing and that is why we are trying to save people like you from yourselves before you step into the ballot box and vote to run the state off of the cliff. Go ahead and do what you have to do, though. Sometimes the mob mentality has to run its course before sanity and reason can return.

Everyone who “dislikes” Barnes keep saying look at his record. Well look at his record as governor and you will see the state was in a lot better fiscal shape before Perdue (GOP) and the General Assembly (GOP) came to power.
Barnes lost because he tried to do education reform (the teachers turned on him and now are begging him back because Sonny cut their income, raises, and raised health care cost), he tried to improve transportation (I bet people wish the Northern Arc was under constrution, not only would it have helped with traffice, more Georgians would be working), and he changed an outdate state flag that no longer represented the PEOPLE of GA (just a few people who still believe the civil war is raging). I hope common sense prevails, I have not seen one ad detailing any issues Deal stands for, it is just all anti-Obama murlaky. I hope the state of GA does not reward Deal for “quitting Congress” because an ethics violation was hanging over his head, we will pay dearly.

In twenty years, the Old South racist will have died out and Georgia might have a chance. Till then they will keep voting the Republican Southern Strategy as taught so well. If Deal is elected Governor, will (should) he approve and sign the annual budget bill which will include state tax dollars for his vehicle salvage business sanctioned by the state’s Department of Revenue and tax dollars he’s paid to lease property to the state of Georgia through the Department of Administrative Services?
Same question could be asked about Barnes. Should he sign any legislation that will directly benefit his law firm? This would include any more regulation or liability issues in the law.

While it concerns me that Nathan Deal has some ethics and financial issues. I feel obligated to vote for him instead of Roy Barnes. Barnes is an arrogant politician who does not care about the will of the people and will do whatever he pleases as Governor. I feel that Deal will at least listen to what the voters want and won’t try to jam things down our throats.

Extremely interesting:
When confronted with evidence of Republican Joe Miller’s lies and past misdeeds, Alaskans are now withdrawing their support of Miller.
http://www.slate.com/blogs/blogs/weigel/archive/2010/10/28/the-incredible-shrinking-joe-miller.aspx
Here in Georgia, however, when confronted with evidence of Republican Nathan Deal’s lies and misdeeds, support for Deal only grows stronger.
I’m beginning to think that Alaskans are made of sterner stuff than Georgians; that morality and honesty mean more to Alaskans than they mean to the people of Georgia.
Please, Georgia: Let’s follow the example set by Alaska. When a candidate has demonstrated that he is liar and a crook, we need to put principle over party and choose the better alternative. Alaskans know that they need to choose the best leader for Alaska – one who doesn’t lie to taxpayers or use his government position for self-enrichment.
Alaskans are saying NO to Joe Miller, now that they know what a liar he is. Alaskans are NOT just “holding their noses” and voting for Joe Miller anyway.
Do Georgians have the moral fortitude to say NO to Nathan Deal? For the sake of Georgia, I pray that we do.

There are 34 GOP State Senators right now. 2/3 majority (which is what I believe is required for veto overrule) is 37. There are 7 seats being decided next Tues from people retiring or running for other races (that list was built from memory, but give it +/- 2 on the outside) There are 23 seats facing opposition (including the 7), but at least a couple of those are certified write in opposition, meaning “not a chance in Hades”. Among the 23 are at least two that seem to be possible (if not definite) wins for the GOP – Josh McKoon in Seth Harp’s old seat, and possibly Garry Guan for the seat currently held by Curt Thompson. Also in there are two former State Reps (Fran Millar and Barry Loudermilk) looking to move across the hall. Overall, I’m thinking (just from my gut, I haven’t seen any numbers) that if any change, it will be at least +1-2 GOP. (GOP year and all)
What those numbers mean is that the GOP is already “near” veto override level even in the Senate, and after Tues I fully expect them to be even closer or possibly even exceed it.
Even if they fall just under it, do you really think it would be THAT hard to convince a D to override if the legislation were truly good?

it is unfortunate that deal has financial problems as many of us have (thanks republican leaders)
but he needs to concentrate on putting his house back in order
not running-ruining our great state
i am appalled at perdue taking credit for strides in education this week; when in fact in is in spite of him.
you can thank our great teachers in this state for working harder
even as perdue has taken away hundreds of millions earmarked for education; all to fund his pet projects
you want more of the same……then vote deal next tuesday

I rather have Roy Barnes at least he knows how to handle business and run it right this is what Georgia needs, not someone involved in investigations, damn near broke and you want to call that a stand up guy.
Barnes has his flaws but when you compare the two I think I rather deal with Barnes than Deal. At least Barnes was a Gov. before, he made is mistakes and now he may have to do good on those.
I think the Republicans are just upset with Roy Barnes because he didn’t save the “Confederate Flag”

You people are funny. ” All of you [Insert name of conservative group here] are bigots and racist!!” or “All of you [Insert name of liberal group here] here are idiots and socialists!” are they type comments I’ve read on this blog. Heck that’s all I ever read on blogs by Tucker, Bookman, Wingfield, etc. While the comments are entertaining, it’s actually really sad to be honest. No two people can have a civil discussion on what’s happening in this country or state or even this city because everyone comes to the table with preconceived notions on the other person. (Conservative=Racists, Liberal=Socialist)
You all fail to see that both Barnes and Deal both are crooks and will do nothing they are promising you if elected. Barnes will kiss the back side of the teachers groups while Deal will cut deals in the back rooms of the capital that haven’t seen action since the Talmadge days. Yet each of you will (or have) go blindly into the booth on Tuesday and vote for Barnes because he’s got a “D” next to his name or Deal because he’s got an “R” next to his. And all Monds will do is cause a run-off. And it will be status-quo on in on the TV, radio, and on these blog’s: name calling; p*ssing contests over stupid things like salary, jobs, education, social circles, etc; distortion of facts and statistics; regurgitation of talking points during the run-off. All of that. As for me, at one point in my life all I did was breathe politics. Now, I could care less. No one candidate will ever live up to the promises they make. The deck is stacked against them from day 1. But y’all go ahead and vote for Barnes, Deal, or Monds. I’ll meet each of you back here in four years where nothing will have changed except for the name after the title of Governor.

The Right is wrong…. oh my oh my. First off, yes… and I probably have a higher education than you and most definitely make more money. Why else would you be for entitlement programs and as many free handouts as you can get? Obviously you weren’t intelligent enough to make it on your own so you want the reverse discrimination to come into play to help you out.
Want a good example of a municipality run by Blacks that is an absolute failure? Clayton County. What a joke.
Now I can’t believe you made the statement about unemployment and how Obama has done a great job compared to Bush. From 2002 – 2008 the HIGHEST unemployment rate was 6% in 2003 and the lowest was 4.6 in 06 & 07. Mr. Obamas rate? Hmmmm let’s see.. since August of 2009… 9 months into the Obama “change” it was around 9.8% and several months later we saw it rise well over 10%. These “jobs” that the Obama administration created were temporary census jobs. The 9.6% level also does not include people who are underemployed (that means people with college degrees working hourly jobs in case you didn’t know) or people that had given up looking. The actual rate is probably around 16 – 19% unemployment. Plus any new jobs that Obama does create, a majority of them are in the public sector meaning what??? Anyone??? Growth to our Govt that our tax dollars have to pay for. Higher deficit!! Yeehaw!!!
Want some numbers besides unemployment that Obama has helped raise incredibly? How about the deficit as a percentage of GDP. For the last 30 years, it’s generally been around 2.5 – 3.5 %. In 2008 when Bush left office it was 3.18. In 09 it went to 9.91. 2010 it’s 10.64. Why? Because of Obama and Pelosi and Reid and their out of control spending and growth of govt. Well, who’s going to pay for all these “entitlement” programs and new govt salaries, etc… WE are you Dolt!! Jeez….
Plain and simple, there needs to be an IQ test to have the right to vote. Same thing to breed. You just can’t fix stupid.
A better idea, is to assign a number of votes to people based on their income. Low IQ/low income people. NO VOTE. Highly educated, High income earners… multiple votes based on the level of income made and the amount of taxes paid. That way multiple income earners multiple votes can cancel out some of the stupid votes from less educated sheep that follow the chosen one.

“The White House claimed that the banner was requested by the crew of the ship, who did not have the facilities for producing such a banner. Afterward, the administration and naval sources stated that the banner was the Navy’s idea, White House staff members made the banner, and it was hung by the U.S. Navy personnel. White House spokesman Scott McClellan told CNN, “We took care of the production of it. We have people to do those things. But the Navy actually put it up.” According to John Dickerson of Time magazine, the White House later conceded that they actually hung the banner but still insists it had been done at the request of the crew members.”

Why not answer the essay question? Let’s see how quick your little conservative bromides are at tackling a real issue this state will face when Deal takes the Oath of Office. You answer a question by asking another? I don’t think so. Just give it a shot. Let’s see where in your vast library of principled, conservative philosophy you can tell us exactly how the crook you voted for as the next Governor of this state is going to handle these conflicts when he has to sign a budget document in which he has several direct pecuniary interests. Are you going to get all whiney and point to the Marxist, liberal media when he has to start answering those questions? Just try answering the essay question. Let’s see what great ethical standards you can draw upon to figure out how he can ethically sign a budget document where he has a direct conflict of interest. And how will he manage the state employees in conducting themselves ethically when he’s not?
