Republican challenger Austin Scott, left, and Rep. Jim Marshall, D-Macon, trade barbs after a debate at the Georgia National Fair night in Perry, Ga., earlier this month. NYT/Grant Blankenship
In a poll released this morning, The Hill newspaper in Washington says Republican challenger Austin Scott has a double-digit lead over U.S. Rep. Jim Marshall of Macon, one of at least 46 Democrats who could lose their seats next Tuesday.
The horse-race in the 8th Congressional District, which covers much of middle Georgia:
– Austin Scott, 50%;
– Jim Marshall, 37%;
– Undecided and other, 12%
From the Hill:
Of the 42 districts polled…, all but two of which are currently Democratic, 31 had Republicans in the lead. Democrats were up in just seven, and four were tied. In addition, there are some 15 Democratic districts that are so far into the GOP win column that they weren’t polled. That would suggest at least 46 GOP pickups, plus whatever the party gets out of another 40 or 50 seats that some experts believe are in play.
“We didn’t even poll in about 15 districts that are already too far gone for Democrats,” said Mark Penn, whose firm, Penn Schoen Berland, conducted the poll. “So that, along with our entire series of polls, points to something in the range of a 50-seat gain for Republicans.”
The survey boilerplate:
Penn Schoen Berland conducted 400 phone interviews among likely voters in the November congressional election in Georgia’s 8th congressional district. Fielding began Tuesday, October 19, 2010 and ended on Thursday, October 21, 2010. MOE ±4.9

Ralph Reed’s Faith and Freedom Coalition is dipping for the first time into Georgia politics. Reed’s comeback organization has launched a $500,000 radio ad campaign targeting 18 House and Senate races.
In Georgia, the Faith and Freedom Coalition will join Republicans in the effort to unseat U.S. Reps. Jim Marshall, D-Macon, and Sanford Bishop, D-Albany. Listen to the anti-Marshall ad here – “It’s us versus them.” And the anti-Bishop ad here: “Bishop doesn’t get it.”

My AJC colleague Craig Schneider was at the Buckhead headquarters of Republican nominee for governor Nathan Deal last night, to monitor a protest. He sent along these notes:
There were about 30 people, mostly women, protesting Deal and asserting that he has a voting history that does not support women.
But there were about 50 people, again mostly women, who came out to support Deal.
They tried to out-chant and out-sing one another. And both sides gave interviews to media present.
Deal protester Kelly Douglas, 26, of Atlanta, said, “I’m here because I’m a woman in Georgia and I care about women’s issues. I think Deal doesn’t vote in women’s best interests.”The protesters had signs saying “Real.Raw. Deal.” And “Shame on you, Nathan Deal.”
The protesters chanted, “No Deal, Bad for women.” And they had a moment of silence for women who were victims of domestic violence.
Deal supporter Tricia Pridemore, 38, of Marietta, said, “It’s so frustrating to see Nathan Deal misconstrued into something completely false. It’s completely disingenuous to say Nathan Deal does not support women and women’s issues.”
The Deal supporters sang “God Bless America” and held hands in a prayer circle.”

Supporters of Amendment 2, which would levy a $10 car tag fee to fund a statewide trauma network, gathered at the state Capitol on Wednesday. George Israel, head of Yes 2 Save Lives, gave the hard sell to those who think the $18 million generated each year would be accessible to state lawmakers to spend as they please.

Looking over George Israel's shoulder at the rally for Amendment 2/Jim Galloway
“The funds are locked in. The politicians are locked out,” he said.
Walter Jones of the Morris News Service notes that there was an even harder sell:
Rarely do political gatherings on the Capitol steps stir partisans to tears, but Charlotte Laverty’s story Tuesday of her son’s fatal car wreck did during a rally in support of a constitutional amendment for trauma care.
She told of how her dinner out with her husband was interrupted with news of the accident, of rushing to the scene less than a mile from home and of arriving at the hospital moments after an ambulance delivered her 17-year-old son.
“We were fortunate that we live in a town that has a trauma center,” she said, listing the many specialists who were on call the night of the wreck who tended to her son.
Although he died two days later, she was thankful for the chance his out-of-town family had to say their good-byes.
“If I lived in a rural area and thought, ‘Had I only paid 10 extra bucks for my car tag I might have gotten the care that Grant Laverty got.’ How can you forgive yourself?” she asked.
Some of 100 or so nurses, doctors, rescue personnel and business executives attending the rally choked up as she spoke. Her comments were punctuated by the siren of an ambulance on an emergency call a few streets over.

Excellent and I’m a Democrat. I’ve seen Jim Marshall’s ‘I dislike Nancy Pelosi’ commercials. He accepts campaign funds from the Democratic Party. Anyone so low as to bite the criticize and bite the hand that feeds them deserves to lose. I hope he loses big – he’s no help to Democrats anyway.

Jim Marshall is a professional government employee. He was a lukewarm mayor, boring law professor and a lackluster politician. He is the worst kind of politician – his so-called Blue Dog temperment really is no more that a person who can be purchased.
Have you ever wondered why his Chapter 13 trustee Camille Hope is always just Camille? And she is always is in the background? That is because of years of bullying creditors and debtors in Macon and Athens.
Wonder what he’ll do in his next government employment. Trash collector? Back to teaching…snore….

Since the Democrats pulled money from Marshall, it was obvious their REAL polls showed his campaign was hopelessly behind. Only the bogus eyewash polls were released.
Of course the AJC biased “Politifact” continues to attack Deal – it is and always has been a Democratic party tool, and ignored by all except the Democratic base.

Please vote no on Amendment 2, Georgia. Raising taxes in this economic climate is a horrible idea. Simply look at history.
I now live in Colorado and we have three Amendment proposals (60, 61, and 101 if you want to look them up), all of which decrease our tax burden here. Big time special interest groups and unions are bombing all advertising venues saying that it will be a “voter approved recession.” BS. Anytime you lower taxes, it brings investment back in. Find me an economist besides Keynes (we proved him wrong decades ago) who says otherwise.
The point is to add a tax like Amendment 2 that sounds like such a good idea that how could any sane person vote against it. The problem is that it won’t be used for that purpose, it will go into the general fund. Remember the state constitutional amendment in the 1990’s that allowed the DOT to build a toll road: Georgia 400? “They” said that as soon as the road was paid off, the tolls would be removed. Indeed, it’s not paid off yet. That’s because the swine running the state was too busy diverting the money to other sweetheart projects across the state. It easily could have been paid off by now.
Vote no.

I await the day when Republicans control everything and no longer have anyone else to blame for the problems they created. Then there will be a revolution when the sheep finally figure out it’s not the Dems or Obama or Reid or Pelosi or the other manufactured bogey men. Voodoo trickle down smoke and mirrors doesn’t work. It’s never worked, and what will inevitably occur is a continuation of the most massive wealth transfer from the former middle class to the super rich that has ever been seen in this country. As much as I respect and applaud President Obama, I am convinced that the irrational and corrosive forces now afoot will abort and destroy any productive rational measures he proposes or attempts. So we will have to wait for the next Republican president to finish the job of destroying the middle class and pumping our wealth into the pockets of the huge, soulless multinational corporations and the oil kingdoms who are their chief bankrollers.

George – you need to VOTE YES – on the GDOT bill – this is how GDoT always did business until the slut mercenary Gina Abramson and her pimp Sonny Perdue manipulated the GDoT into a financial crisis to put a governor appointed “planner” onto the GDoT pay roll – requireing GDoT to have 100% of the project cost in 1 year for a project that will take at least 5-7 years from start to finish is asinine, and will exponentially drive up the cost of doing major road projects throughout the state (more unemployment for construction companies and progress on most projects will grind to a halt).

REpublicans MUST prove they honestly want small government:
1) End EIC
Terminate corporate welfare – include farm subsidies to all farms not owned by individuals; those individuals who have a annual net income over $75,000 would also lose most of their funds.
2) Reduce the aircraft carrier fleet to 6
3) Pull the troops out of Korea, Germany & Japan
4) Salary freeze for 5 years (or until debt is paid off) on all federal employees earning more than $75, 000 a year
5) Reduce Congressional salaries to $50,000; Senatorial salaries to $100,000 – terminate elected & appointed officials’ pensions
6) Terminate 100% of federal grants, unless they have dedicated funding source (earmarks would disappear) – FHW trust fund.
7) Terminate all foreign assistance, including the $50 billion to Africa for AIDS and $1 billion to Haiti for corruption development.
9) Launch FBI probe into medicare/medicaid fraud.

Everyone thought State Insurance Commissioner, John Oxendine, was going to win the Republian primary. Oxendine was leading in all the polls on election day. At the end of the day, however, he receive only 19% of all the votes. Georgia pollers are BS artists, and their methodology is flawed. Democrats will retain control of the U.S. House and Senate. And Marshall, Bishop and Barnes will win their races. I’m sorry Republians, but I quest all of you will just have to keep lying for the next two years-rationalizing and twisting the truth. White America took a “feel good pill” on November 2008 and woke up the next day with a hang-over. They found out, that they really are racist and that they can’t stomach a Black man as president. That red-neck emotional fervor came out, thus the Tea Party. A right-wing of the Republian Party, they banded together to try and pull down a great president at the expense of the country’s welfare. Continue to lie for the next two years and you might get your wish. But I suspect that by that time, the Hispanic and Black voters will have the advantage. And with every red-neck coming out of the “bushes,” in mass numbers, they won’t be able to put Georgia and the country back together again. Polls don’t win elections, votes do.

Perdue was a democrat a decade ago, and he had a Napoleon size ego, with an insatiable desire for power. The entire GDoT “fiscal crises” was a sham. I listed the starting list above. If this does not balance, the budget, you need to eliminate reduced school lunches, and other social welfare. BUT, I would first evaluated all US embassies – are they staffed correctly, and are specific ones needed (Luxemborg, most countries in Africa)? The big reduction is militarily – primarily the Navy – who are we threatened by? Only Russia & China, and they don’t seem to hot to invade us.

Eliminate the entire $151 billion USDA, HUD, and HHS budgets and not just some social services, child and low income nutrition programs. Cut the entire $157 billion Navy/Marine Corp budget if you want. Since conservatives hate education, get rid of another $47 billion. Eric: I guess you have a short memory – 8 years of W included terrorist attack in NY, 2 wars: Afghanistan- failed to get Osama, Iraq-failed to find WMD that justified war, Katrina, collapse of economy in 2008 (though McCain suspending his campaign for a day sure helped). It’ll take our President more than 2 years to clean up that mess.

Davey C. Saying, “Easy, stop the out of control SPENDING,” is not a plan. Eliminating the Departments of State, Education, USDA, HUD, HHS and mandatory spending food stamps, foster/adoption/child protection, and children and SSI disability gets you $400 billion of the $1.8 trillion budget deficit is a plan. Show me the easy $1.4 trillion you want to cut, and don’t forget the GOP want to cut taxes…but I forgot that the GOP leadership says reducing income doesn’t add to the deficit.

I despise anyone representing our country who offers apologies for what we are to other countries, many of whom accept our assistance and hate us for it. How short thou memory PaddyO because you stated that “lets start slashing the federal government this January!” I asked you how would you cut spending, and Davey C came up with “Easy, stop the out of control SPENDING.” Nothing is as easy as conservatives’ sound bites nor as complicated as a liberal dissertation. Ronald Reagan started this mess by bringing in the federal budget on pallets, and in 2010 Boehner and Friends came out with a 14-page federal budget with no numbers. As a stockholder, what would you say if a company sent you an annual report without numbers? As for cutting out the Department of Education, keep in mind that its two largest items in their $47 billion budget are special education (1-110 children have autism) and College Pell Grants. And there is the difference I want to give an incentive to get the type of behavior and the liberals want to punish. The 10 and 30 were pulled out of the air. It really should be you get the lowest tax rate of any nation to build your product in the US and the same tax rate if you do not. I am pretty sure Saxby and Johnny would support this idea.
