Your morning jolt: Jim Marshall trailing by double digits, says poll from The Hill

In a poll released this morning, The Hill newspaper in Washington says Republican challenger Austin Scott has a double-digit lead over U.S. Rep. Jim Marshall of Macon, one of at least 46 Democrats who could lose their seats next Tuesday.

The horse-race in the 8th Congressional District, which covers much of middle Georgia:

– Austin Scott, 50%;

– Jim Marshall, 37%;

– Undecided and other, 12%

From the Hill:

Of the 42 districts polled…, all but two of which are currently Democratic, 31 had Republicans in the lead. Democrats were up in just seven, and four were tied. In addition, there are some 15 Democratic districts that are so far into the GOP win column that they weren’t polled. That would suggest at least 46 GOP pickups, plus whatever the party gets out of another 40 or 50 seats that some experts believe are in play.

“We didn’t even poll in about 15 districts that are already too far gone for Democrats,” said Mark Penn, whose firm, Penn Schoen Berland, conducted the poll. “So that, along with our entire series of polls, points to something in the range of a 50-seat gain for Republicans.”

The survey boilerplate:

Penn Schoen Berland conducted 400 phone interviews among likely voters in the November congressional election in Georgia’s 8th congressional district. Fielding began Tuesday, October 19, 2010 and ended on Thursday, October 21, 2010. MOE ±4.9

Ralph Reed’s Faith and Freedom Coalition is dipping for the first time into Georgia politics. Reed’s comeback organization has launched a $500,000 radio ad campaign targeting 18 House and Senate races.

In Georgia, the Faith and Freedom Coalition will join Republicans in the effort to unseat U.S. Reps. Jim Marshall, D-Macon, and Sanford Bishop, D-Albany. Listen to the anti-Marshall ad here – “It’s us versus them.” And the anti-Bishop ad here: “Bishop doesn’t get it.”

My AJC colleague Craig Schneider was at the Buckhead headquarters of Republican nominee for governor Nathan Deal last night, to monitor a protest. He sent along these notes:

There were about 30 people, mostly women, protesting Deal and asserting that he has a voting history that does not support women.

But there were about 50 people, again mostly women, who came out to support Deal.

They tried to out-chant and out-sing one another. And both sides gave interviews to media present.
Deal protester Kelly Douglas, 26, of Atlanta, said, “I’m here because I’m a woman in Georgia and I care about women’s issues. I think Deal doesn’t vote in women’s best interests.”

The protesters had signs saying “Real.Raw. Deal.” And “Shame on you, Nathan Deal.”

The protesters chanted, “No Deal, Bad for women.” And they had a moment of silence for women who were victims of domestic violence.

Deal supporter Tricia Pridemore, 38, of Marietta, said, “It’s so frustrating to see Nathan Deal misconstrued into something completely false. It’s completely disingenuous to say Nathan Deal does not support women and women’s issues.”

The Deal supporters sang “God Bless America” and held hands in a prayer circle.”

AJC’s Politifact Georgia takes on a charge from Republican nominee for governor Nathan Deal that Democratic rival Roy Barnes voted against legislation to make it easier to prosecute child molesters.

Supporters of Amendment 2, which would levy a $10 car tag fee to fund a statewide trauma network, gathered at the state Capitol on Wednesday. George Israel, head of Yes 2 Save Lives, gave the hard sell to those who think the $18 million generated each year would be accessible to state lawmakers to spend as they please.

Looking over George Israel's shoulder at the rally for Amendment 2/Jim Galloway

“The funds are locked in. The politicians are locked out,” he said.

Walter Jones of the Morris News Service notes that there was an even harder sell:

Rarely do political gatherings on the Capitol steps stir partisans to tears, but Charlotte Laverty’s story Tuesday of her son’s fatal car wreck did during a rally in support of a constitutional amendment for trauma care.

She told of how her dinner out with her husband was interrupted with news of the accident, of rushing to the scene less than a mile from home and of arriving at the hospital moments after an ambulance delivered her 17-year-old son.

“We were fortunate that we live in a town that has a trauma center,” she said, listing the many specialists who were on call the night of the wreck who tended to her son.

Although he died two days later, she was thankful for the chance his out-of-town family had to say their good-byes.

“If I lived in a rural area and thought, ‘Had I only paid 10 extra bucks for my car tag I might have gotten the care that Grant Laverty got.’ How can you forgive yourself?” she asked.

Some of 100 or so nurses, doctors, rescue personnel and business executives attending the rally choked up as she spoke. Her comments were punctuated by the siren of an ambulance on an emergency call a few streets over.

td. The Dept. of Ed ($47B), social services like Peach (Children Health) care recipents and welfare and shipping all the illegals home and turning all welfare recipients to migrant workers ($40B) are included in the $400 billion PaddyO’s cut government spending plan, except eliminating half the Federal workforce benefits, would get you about $2B. Selling off all US oil reserves and opening up federal lands could eliminate the current national debt, but you know the oil companies have politicians in their hip pocket and we still have a $1.4 trillion budget deficit. The libs tried to tell everyone that the annual $1 trillion animal in the room is associated with health and healthcare costs, but all we heard was regulations and death panels. This is why I laugh when Boehner says he will cut the budget by $100 billion. Smoke and Mirrors td, Smoke and Mirrors.

We hav a good start then on turning the country around. You give the incentive to corporations 10% tax rate if product is built in US and 30% if product is not. Then you put everyone back to work. If all the unemployed is back to work then how much more revenues would come in?

“But not to worry, I never doubted your love of party or your hatred of America-in that order”

I find it ironic that you should infer that I hate my country. I love this country beyond my capacity in words to express it. I loathe what elements of this country would do to change my country with regard to our form of government and economic system. I despise anyone representing our country who offers apologies for what we are to other countries, many of whom accept our assistance and hate us for it. I compare the mass hysteria associated with Obama’s campaign with the pre-World War II Germans acceptance of Hitler and his subsequent ascension to power. I fear for my country if this current trend towards socialism is not halted because, left unchecked, it will bring about the fall of this great nation.

But you haven’t the ability to see this . . .

AMEN!!!!! Just like with your children, you will always love them but sometimes do not approve of their actions, and when they are little you have to spank them to show actions have consequences.

With all of this talk about a Republican tsunami…I believe I will vote for my opponent, Liz Carter…that way, with all the new people heading to DC, I’m afraid it will cause DC to capsize into the Potomac River. Therefore, I wanna be one of the first ones out of DC.

The problem I see is that my children and grandchildren will pay dearly for mistakes of this magnitude. It doesn’t matter much for me for I have lived most of my life and have very little of it left, but I fear what my descendents will face.

Lord, I do love these AMEN’s between LMS & td! Are they joined by something more than ideology?
Hello, LMS – I did not infer, I said it! You hate America and the proof is that you want a US President to fail! I despised GWB, but wanted his administration to suceed, because it was what was good for America. You want Obama to fail to prove the point that a black man can never govern this country-because old bitter white men say so. We are SO over you and your ilk!!! I am so tired of Republiscum telling Dems they are “unpatriotic”. You are the ones who hate America because you put party above country. Or even state in this case. You are hate mongers, just like your buddy Rush and you are disgusting.

How short thou memory PaddyO because you stated that “lets start slashing the federal government this January!” I asked you how would you cut spending, and Davey C came up with “Easy, stop the out of control SPENDING.” Nothing is as easy as conservatives’ sound bites nor as complicated as a liberal dissertation. Ronald Reagan started this mess by bringing in the federal budget on pallets, and in 2010 Boehner and Friends came out with a 14-page federal budget with no numbers. As a stockholder, what would you say if a company sent you an annual report without numbers? As for cutting out the Department of Education, keep in mind that its two largest items in their $47 billion budget are special education (1-110 children have autism) and College Pell Grants. Smoke and Mirrors folks, Smoke and Mirrors.

td. You must be a liberal because “you (want to) give the incentive to corporations 10% tax rate if product is built in US and 30% is reasonable. Although the thought is more aligned with tariffs, Saxby and Johnny agreed to filibuster the bill to tax companies who shipped overseas and give tax credits to companies who hire US workers, that would have done just that!!

Your sister, the lame stream media and the vast majority of the Dems in congress and the progressive movement did not want that to happen. You libs taught us well and you do not like it when we play by the rules you established.

And there is the difference I want to give an incentive to get the type of behavior and the liberals want to punish. The 10 and 30 were pulled out of the air. It really should be you get the lowest tax rate of any nation to build your product in the US and the same tax rate if you do not. I am pretty sure Saxby and Johnny would support this idea. I think the liberals would filibuster this idea because it is not punishing the evil corporations.

td. Somehow I do not think that the wimpy-roll over and play dead Dems in congress learned how to set the rules quite like Dennis Hastert. Dick Armey, Tom DeLay, and Bill Frist. Remember “up-or-down votes,” or “nuclear option,” or not allowing committee hearings, or “don’t question the President during a time of war,” or hold up the votes to make payments-to-vote on the floor, vilified those who opposed nominees like Harriett Miers or Alberto Gonzales saying “the President should have advisors of his choosing,” or making medical diagnois from the congressional floor. td, I think you missed who the real teachers were…

“I did not infer, I said it! You hate America and the proof is that you want a US President to fail”

I want his policies and his plan for the socialization of America to fail. There is a big difference between those two things, but I doubt that you would be able to discern it.

“You want Obama to fail to prove the point that a black man can never govern this country-because old bitter white men say so”

That is a total and absolute lie. Were Herman Cain, or any other black person with his conservative beliefs, to offer himself as a candidate, he would have my vote.

“You are hate mongers”

It appears to me that you sre the one with the ‘hate’ problem here. I have no interest in responding to any more of your posts. You are a vile and repulsive person not worth any effort s on my part.

Gee, and I was looking so forward to us being best buddies, with all we have in common!! We are not on a “path to socialization of America”. That’s something you’re fed every day by your admitted “news” sources: Rush, Glenn, Sean etc. The proof that you cannot think for yourself is in your posts – you repeat, sometimes verbatim, the talking points from these 3 high-school dropouts every day. You really are so sad. Well, goodbye LMS.
