The Nation: Ex-CNN commentator Lou Dobbs relies on illegal immigrants

Former CNN commentator Lou Dobbs made a name for himself as a hard-line opponent of illegal immigration. The Nation, a liberal magazine and web site, says Dobbs has made personal exceptions to his views.

The investigative piece was timed to coincide with the possible debut of Dobbs as a political candidate:

Former CNN commentator Lou Dobbs/AP

Former CNN commentator Lou Dobbs/AP

His scheduled October 9 address at the Virginia Tea Party Convention will mark his second major Tea Party address of the year, reviving questions about whether the former CNN host is gearing up for an electoral campaign. He recently told Fox’s Sean Hannity that he has not ruled out a possible Senate or even presidential run in 2012.

But with his relentless diatribes against “illegals” and their employers, Dobbs is casting stones from a house—make that an estate—of glass. Based on a yearlong investigation, including interviews with five immigrants who worked without papers on his properties, The Nation and the Investigative Fund at The Nation Institute have found that Dobbs has relied for years on undocumented labor for the upkeep of his multimillion-dollar estates and the horses he keeps for his 22-year-old daughter, Hillary, a champion show jumper.

Dobbs left CNN in 2009.

I wonder how many Georgia Legislators and how many major Georgia businesses would also fit into this category? Supporting anti-immigrant policies and politicians all the while benefiting from their labor? I think we would have a huge number of legislators and big businesses linked in Georgia.

this country would grind to a halt without immigrant labor. it grabs the headlines to complain about it, but there aren’t a whole lot of people lining up to do yardwork or hammer nails or pick crops for the wages that are paid. let ‘em in, sign ‘em up, withhold taxes. then the fatheads can find something else to complain about.

The GOP has no intention of ever ending illegal immigration. They are the party of the unfettered pursuit of profit. They need cheap labor. They roll this old chestnut out every election cycle to appease the displaced working class Whites who are too naive to realize they are being used as well.

While building fences and sending troops to the border maybe somewhat effective, it would cost taxpayer money. Fining unethical employers who hire illegals would produce revenue and help eliminate the illegal job market. The GOP would never do this to their own. (Perhaps we could fund the troops and the fence with the fines??)

The largest industry in Georgia is agriculture. The AJC has recently reported that half of its workforce is illegal. Saxby Chambliss has a huge peach operation in South Georgia. Perhaps we should start sniffing around. The same goes for the Hall County poultry processors.

Ralph, it’s not a “hit piece” if it’s the truth. I guess it is hard for some people to accept the fact that many Republicans are hypocrites. They rail against “illegals” and yet use them themselves; they tout “family values” and yet frequent prostitutes and have affairs with staff members; they preach fiscal conservatism and yet cannot manage their own money to the point of going bankrupt; and they claim to be Christian yet preach hate, bigotry, and intolerance.

His responsibility?

Lou Dobbs gets railed on for speaking out against illegal immigration (note, his wife is Mexican). I don’t see anything here where it mentions whether Mr. Dobbs had an obligation to check the status of the persons allegedly working for him (were they hired through a company, etc. or did he hire them as individuals)? Anyone know?
Thanks,

So, when they say without documents do they mean legal documents? Seams that there is a vast network of false paper providers like for the lady extorting Meg in California. The answer would be a tamperproof national ID card, but I bet the lame stream media empire at the Nation would oppose it on privacy grounds…

Thing is that Lou has the courage of his convictions and resigned last year so he could get an unvarnished view of the immigration issue in front of everyone without interference from the media empire that employed him.

No one “employees” Illegals, per se these days…the smart folks “rent” them. Ever driven by the Home Depot Store on Piedmont and Sidney Marcus Blvd. in the morning (or the afternoon)? These good folks (independent contractors) are lined up from the QT Station on Sidney Marcus Blvd. along the road that runs in front of “The Dump” furniture store (the old Home Depot store) all the way past the 30324 Post Office and up Morosgo Drive past the new Home Deport to the Chevron Station at the corner of Piedmont. At least a 100 souls at any given time are available for your inspection. They’re all ready, willing and able to play “Let’s Make A Deal” and negotiate for whatever “miscellaneous” chores or work that you need them to do. Isn’t this the “American Free Enterprise” system and individual entrepreneurial spirit at its best and finest? Sure it is and that’s why the Conservatives love it as they do. Too bad that these folks are also “Illegals”…hence the conundrum.

This crap is BS about illegals do jobs that Americans will not do!! Do a poll of unemployed American CITIZENS(white, black and brown) and see how many would refuse any type of work in these times. Some of you people are nothing but a bunch of LIARS!!!!!!!!

Tom, it is not an issue of whether or not American citizens WILL do them or not; the fact of the matter is that they’re NOT doing them. Even in a recession, we see our restrictive immigration policies result in severe worker shortages among high-skilled and low-skilled professions. More than 20% of employers nationwide reported difficulty finding low-skilled workers to fill jobs in 2009. Among those who do find American unskilled labor, there is a high turnover rate among native-born low-skilled workers. Immigrants – whether documented or undocumented – typically create more jobs in the American economy than they fill and slightly improve wages for about 90% of the native-born workforce.
The fact of the matter is that we need much higher levels of legal immigration; by making it easier to come to the United States legally, we reduce illegal immigration, create more jobs for American citizens, and improve wages for most Americans.

As was the outspoken “anti-illegal immigration” Chip Rogers, Lou Dobbs’ staff was fully informed of the Roman Catholic Church’s openly published “National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry” stratagem to promote and protect illegal immigration into our country to usurp the People, Constitution and Creed…but both remained silent faced with the “signed confession of treason” by the institution Our Founder identified as “the real Anti-Christ.” Rogers and Dobbs are hypocrites false patriots, and no men.

Miss Peach:
The largest employer in the state of Georgia is the State of Georgia. That would make Government our largest industry if meausred by the size based on employee numbers. If you’re measuring the size of the industry based on gross receipts, then you may be correct.

Geez, I need to see if my lawn service hires undocumented illegals. Should also check the company that fixed my roof after the hail storm. Maybe my gutter cleaners, the guys who wash and wax my car. I would ask the folks that deliver my AJC but I fired them years ago because of brain dead stories like this one. I am not responsible for illegals, the federal government is according to the argument they are making against Nevada, so it is not Dobbs responsibility.

Have any of the haters ever stopped to think about the fact that this is a busy man… I bet he has no idea that a company he hired to work on his peoperties employed illegals. I own a moderate construction business and I have no idea who my subs employ. I do business with the owner of the company and have no way of knowing whether his employees are legal. Let’s be fair about this please.

It is most unfortunate to see the condition of our leaders today. Those in positions to report our daily news are leaders as well. They fail to live by the standards that they speak so boldy against. This society is in dire need of the leaders revisiting the morals and standards that they swear that they live by. In order for there to be change, we have got to not only say what we mean, but live what we mean!

There isn’t a large farm in this entire country without undocumented workers.

If you have eaten melon this summer, it was held in the hands of an illegal alien.

Otherwise, you couldn’t get tasty cantelopes for a dollar.

Wow, it’s amazing how many people will make excuses for the hypocrite Dobbs. They will tell you that Lou Dobbs , the self-proclaimed expert on illegal immigration couldn’t have known that his workers were illegal immigrants but they will point out that anyone that picks up a laborer in the parking lot of a Home Depot is certainly breaking the law.

Lou’s workers were routinely working 10 hour days, he paid them no overtime, they were living in a cramped 2 bedroom apartment, they relied on taxis to take them to the store because they couldn’t get drivers licenses, yet he had no idea they were working without papers? What a low life scumbag.

Jim Gallway, if you have hired out for any work in and around your home in the last 15 yrs. you hired illegals too. There’s no way around it, and I’ll bet your contractor said they were legal. Roofing, plumbing, painting, yardwork is done by illegals everywhere. Try to hire a true legal American to do the work. Good Luck with that. The owner or supervisor may be American, but most of his help are paid in cash. Hows your glass house?

deegee, he didn’t pay them overtime, he didn’t pay them at all. He paid a third party. Had he been out there demanding to see the papers of another employer’s employees, everyone would have been up in arms screaming “working while Hispanic”, racial profiler and other cute litle sayings. It would have also been a cover story for not just the Nation, but the New York Times, WaPo, etc… .
