U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss on Thursday apologized to the author of a gay-oriented blog for a threatening slur posted from his office, declaring, “All [gays] must die.”
In a prepared statement, Chambliss also spoke of the immediate “removal” of a staff member – who was not identified.
The wording is important. We’re picking up that the staffer was a military liaison assigned by the Pentagon — a fact that Chambliss’ office would not confirm.
A staffer under Chambliss’ direct employ would have been fired. A staffer under another entity’s supervision would be reassigned. Or removed. (My AJC colleague Bob Keefe pinned down the fact that the computer used was located in Chambliss’s Washington office.)
The blog comment at issue was left Sept. 21 on a discussion of whether gays and lesbians should be able to serve openly in the military on “Joe.My.Blog,” a site operated by Joe Jervis of New York City – perhaps an hour after the U.S. Senate turned away an attempt to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell.”
Blog participants quickly tracked the Internet Protocol address to Chambliss’ office.
Chambliss last week condemned the comment, and requested an investigation by the U.S. Senate sergeant-at-arms, who acts as the chamber’s top law enforcement officer.
The statement from Chambliss’ office:
“The office of the Senate Sergeant at Arms has concluded its investigation, and I responded to that report immediately with the removal of a member of my staff. I commend the Sergeant at Arms, Terrance Gainer, and his staff for their very thorough and professional work.
“I have called Mr. Jervis, the blog’s author, and apologized to him personally, and I am sorry for the hurt this incident has caused. Regardless of one’s position on issues and policies, such comments are simply unacceptable, are not befitting those who work in the U.S. Senate, and I will not tolerate them from my staff.”
Jervis, who monitors JoeMyGod, confirmed his conversation with Chambliss and paraphrased the senator’s remarks:
”He said, ‘Joe, I don’t know if you’re Republican or Democrat, or liberal or conservative. But none of that should matter because what was said on your blog shouldn’t be said to anybody by anybody. And I want to offer my sincerest apologies.’
“He said, ‘There’s been a lot of criticism about why it’s taken so long to bring this to a resolution. But this is something that’s going to dramatically affect someone’s life, and we had to make sure we got it exactly right.’”
Jervis accepted Chambliss’ apology.
“I consider the matter closed. The gentleman is no longer in Chambliss’ office,” he said. “I’m pretty sure if he were a direct Chambliss hire, we would know his name. I don’t think he was Chambliss’ to fire.
“I was never calling for this guy’s head. I just wanted the senator himself to address the issue and say that this can’t happen in my office. He has done that.”

He doesn’t get any credit. It took him this long to do something that could have been done in a very short period of time. And had the media not got on his case, he would have probably done nothing. What has chambliss done for the state of Georgia? Name 5 great accomplishments. He’s terrible.

Reassigned means the person is still making a living of my tax dollars, and that’s not a good enough punishment.

The largest industry in GA is agriculture. The AJC recently reported that about half of farm labor is illegal. Although Chambliss talks tough on illegal immigration, he will never do anything. Who would pick the harvest on his South GA peach plantation?? I am so sick of these conflicted pols.

Does the reassigned person get named? How do we know it was a liason from another department if he is not named? Could be a way to get the military guy to do as trained and take the fall based on his commander’s say so. Then again I doubt a highly placed staffer would have been dumb enough to post that comment from a senate computer.

Last Man Standing is Right on,
Those of you who want the offender to be drawn and quartered, hanged, then burned and electrocuted should consider the idea that the individual is likely subject to the rules provided under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (such as § 917 Article 117 “Provoking speeches or gestures” or § 933 Article 133 “Conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman”).
The incident was investigated by the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Senate and any punishment levied would likely be meted out by the individual’s commanding officer who presumably works at the Pentagon.
But for libs who disdain the military and prefer uniformed military offers to serve Democrat party officials wine and cheese during White House parties, you won’t get it.
So keep insisting that Chambliss apologize in-person to every gay American and pout your lips with indignation and utter “why WASN’T he fired” ad infinitum.
Then call Harry Reid’s office and ask him when he plans to apologize to 170 million American females for objectifying women for referring to a female United States Senator as “hot”. While he’s on the phone, ask him when he plans to apologize to 40 million African-Americans for speaking about President Obama’s “Negro dialect.”
I suppose if one is African-American AND female, then Mr. Reid owes you 2 phone calls or 2 personal apologies.

“All [gays] must die”; how is anyone who would think these thoughts fit for any government duty? A long hospital stay, with loads of counseling, might be able to provide insight to psychiatric doctors as to how ill, this person actually is. A medical discharge may be in order. And, if this individual has under aged children, DFACS should be called in, as well.
Well wishes for his, or her, recovery.

I want them to be able to walk around on the boat all day long proclaiming their deviation for me and all of my fellow honorable service members to hear, including the Captain, the Commodore and all of the marines on the boat! I will not rest until sexual deviants are practicing their deviation openly, loud and proud, in full military uniform. Dear God please get them into the service. I commend the Senator for doing the right and just thing in this case. It is inexcusable that a Federal employee fired off a Death Threat from a Senate office computer immediately following a vote on DADT – And by the Senator’s own words .. it was “simply unacceptable” and intolerable by his own standards. The Atlanta Queer Justice League reached out to the Senator’s staff on Wednesday afternoon – so I feel justified in saying that I hope by sharing our stories the Senator can begin to connect his discriminatory policies and the affect they have on the lives of many LGBT Georgian’s. Georgian’s especially should understand that hate and bigotry can be overcome! .. and I look forward to the day when Georgia will finally join the cause for EQuality and recognize that all citizens have the right to EQuality under the law.

Most of the liberal bloggers on here are, ironically, showing their ignorance and hatred for him because he is a conservative Republican by continuing to bash him, his policies, and/or his handling of this situation. Perhaps you should hold a mirror up in front of your own faces and ask who the hypocrites and stereotypers really are?

MR, you’re a fool. Do you think that any minority got where they are today but sitting on their a$$$es?? No, change has SLOWLY come about by lobbying, protesting, “bit-hing and moaning” (your words) about stupid actions and comments made by bigots. You fit into the aforementioned category. And PS, we can all read and interpret bigotry and unjust actions. Chambiss may not be able to fire third party entities but he does have the power to remove them from his office, and he probably only did so beacause of the bith-hing and moaning. And PS — “all f-gs must die” is not only stupid, it is a direct threat. The person who posted the threat should not only be removed, but should be prosecuted for making terrorist threats.

MR: The person who made the comment did not work for Chambliss, he was assigned by an outside intity
If he didn’t work for Chambliss, then why was he in the Senator’s office? I guess he was assigned to troll through blogs, find gays, and then write the slurs? Was that his job? So what he was a Pentagon assignee, Chambliss is still responsible for the conduct of the people in his office. Saxby and his buddies probably laughed about it behind the closed door.

BRW -We’re picking up that the staffer was a military liaison assigned by the Pentagon — a fact that Chambliss’ office would not confirm.
This was a direct quote from the article that you did not read.
GreatATLGuy – I think that is just what Mr. Chambliss did when he found out who made the comment. He had him removed from his staff. I am not saying that the statement was not offensive and improper. I don’t take it as a terrorist threat just the weird opinion of one individual. Not much different whe Stokley Charmical said all honkies (whites) should die. Keep to the subject my friend. The comments were about Chambliss actions not the person who made the so called threat. One thing:
Threat: I will kill all the F’s
Opinion: All F’s must die
Think about it.

Talk about a day late and a dollar short. If Senator Chambliss had waited any longer, we’d all be in retirement. His apology was fine, but the delayed announcement destroyed its effectiveness.

Draft Dodging Saxby has a weigh in on the military? His office is the WORST in the U.S. Senate regarding veteran’s issues. ALL of his military liaisons NEVER served in the military. What a joke!

Sodomites and liberals got their panties in a wad when, in fact, what was said was no worse that what these same liberals were saying about George W. Bush. Ever read Michelle Malkin’s “Unhinged”………page after page of documented outrageous threats against conservatives and Bush (not that Bush is a conservative but for some reason liberals think he is).

Well said GreatATLGuy! I suspect most of the negative comments here about homosexuality are from older people. Most younger people know gay people, have gay relatives and have gay friends. Slowly but surely, gay people are getting their civil rights. With California’s Prop 8 being declared unconstitutional, it’s only a matter of time until the Supreme Court upholds that decision. Then all the states with bans on same sex marriage will be overturned. The tide has turned. Bigots who have marginalized and vilified gays are finally getting a taste of their own medicine.

This does not surprise many minorities in this state, had that been someone saying all white males must die, Chambliss would had act a lot sooner.
Whe will Blacks, and other minorities learn that white male especially here in Hickville dont care about you as long as you can entertain them playing football, singing or danceing.
Let these had of been Obama administration white males especially these southern rednecks would have lost their mind.

They all will eventually.
According to gm the Chambliss staff will be investigating you within a few days.
This is much ado about very little. A stupid staffer makes a haveful bigoted remark on a smalltime blog and the national press picks it up. Must have been a slow news day (or a politcially motivated report) because I can dredge up pantloads of bigoted hatred on any number of blogs by any number of people on any day.
Do Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transgendered, etc. deserve their full rights under the law. Yes.
Do they have the right to dispense vigilante justice on the stupid staffer or use his stupid actions to take down a sitting Legislator? No.

Here’s a guess: The assigned military person who is responsible for the posting of the stupid comment is an affected gay/lesbian military person. They were not happy with DADT and they were not happy with Senator Chambliss position on DADT. Soooo…they played gay guerrilla and pulled a moby, that is the sat down at their computer at Chambliss’s office on that day and went to the web site JOE.MY.GOD and posted that stupid comment knowing if someone looked hard enough (after some guidance) they could figure out where it came from and embarrass another “bigoted, homophobe Southern Senator”.
Once they did, I think they then made sure JOE knew the post had been made and provided some guidance on where to look for the originating office (again, hard to believe JOE just picked this one out of many ugly comments to track down).

Listening to all the queers get bent out of shape on this is as predictable as it is boring. In the gay reaction to all this is the nicely blended narcissism and refusal to face reality that is so pervasive in the gay lifestyle and community. Behind all the bluster is a massive denial of the self-destructive and sociopathic tendencies of gay life (increasing AIDS infection rate, anyone?). Watching you guys get pozzed then shrieking in your Ungaro spring frocks about equality has all the persuasiveness of a used needle.

honestly gay men are just disgusting and such huge crybabies about everything…and most seem to have a bunch of mental problems that are not the result of bullying…consider what a huge percentage of them seem fixated on dominance/submissive issues and wildly promiscuous sex…but hey no biggie, they only gave the world AIDS

You don’t understand, a comment on a blog post is WORSE THAN THE HOLOCAUST. The fewer people that read it, the worse it is. There must be no free speech which ever causes anyone anywhere to feel the slightest bit bad about themselves. Exceptions may be made for certain groups in order to enlighten them as to their own evil, but that’s it.

Usmc Dawg, apparently whomever it was in the Seantor’s office who started this uproar cares what gay people do in their bedroom. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have made the post, right? If no one cared what gay people do then there would be no need for the gay rights movement. I would think that would be pretty simple for you to understand, “Dawg.”

I e-mailed Saxby prior to the vote on DADT asking him to vote for the repeal of this policy. I received his standard boiler plate response which was well documented and detailed, but to me, was just the cover he uses to “stay pure” to his GOP (now Tea Party) Loyalty Oath. This incident shows that he and his staffers use this kind of dialogue in private. There is no excuse for a US Senator from Georgia to not represent all Georgians. Saxby, I will forgive you when you sponsor a motion to REPEAL DADT when congress returns after the election. Show some guts and take responsibility, otherwise, resign. There are thousands, if not 10’s of thousands Georgia based military that would be able to serve with honor upon this repeal.
