The candidate, the name change, and the domestic violence arrest

Jason Shepherd, a Republican candidate for a state House seat in Marietta, called this morning to give advance warning.

He was about to get dumped on by Georgia Democrats, he said. And with the exception of Tom DeLay, no one has ever produced a flattering mug shot.

Sure enough, the package arrived shortly afternoon. Ten years ago, as Jason Goldfarb, Jason Shepherd was arrested on a charge of domestic violence by his live-in fiancée.

The charges were later dropped, but paperwork lives forever. (The state Democratic party does not dispute the lack of prosecution.)

Shepherd, now 34, faces Democratic incumbent Terry Johnson in the Nov. 2 general election.

First, about the arrest as Mr. Goldfarb. Said the GOP candidate:

”My parents got divorced in ’88. My father basically abandoned us. That was when I was in middle school. [My mother] changed her last name back to her maiden name, Shepherd. And re-enrolled me in high school as Jason Shepherd, just to avoid confusion.”

He graduated from high school and the University of Georgia as Jason Shepherd.

But he didn’t formally change his name until 2003, when he was attempting to import his German fiancée – they are now married — and didn’t want to leave any loose ends for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service to trip over.

There was no attempt, he said, to elude an arrest record – just an effort to cut every tie with his father.

Now, as for the eight hours he spent in lock-up in 2000. Shepherd was living with another young lady in an apartment at the time. He says the relationship was rocky – and that she was the abusive partner.

Said Shepherd, who was working for political strategist Mark Rountree and Landmark Communications at the time:

”A week prior to that, she’d hit me and beat up on me a little bit. I said, we’re done with this. If you touch me again, I’m going to call the police.

“About a week later, we got into another argument, and she went after me again and I pushed her off. And I said, ‘This is it. This relationship is over. You need to pack your stuff and move out. I gave her til the end of the week.”

She moved out one night, and sent a Cobb County sheriff’s deputy with a warrant — accusing Shepherd of placing his hands around her neck. A hearing was held three days later, at which the girlfriend sought a temporary protective order.

Under oath, she spoke of Shepherd “trying to strangle me with his hands and then using a rope to try to kill me. He said he would try to poison me or make it look like a suicide, and has been thinking about killing for a while.”

Said Shepherd: “That is absolutely not true. I never said or did anything like that…. She makes things up, to make herself into a victim.”

A six-month protection order against Shepherd was issued. The girlfriend ignored court orders to appear subsequent hearings, Shepherd said, and the charges were dropped.

Shepherd said the incident hasn’t been a secret. He informed Scott Johnson, chairman of the Cobb GOP, about the arrest when he was recruited as a candidate.

The House Republican leadership was informed, he said, as was the State Bar of Georgia – when Shepherd applied for membership.

“I have been, on a small scale, open and honest about it,” Shepherd said. In a release issued late this afternoon, he added this:

“I voluntarily went through a diversion program before it even went to court, in an effort of good faith. However, the charges were totally dropped because there was no truth to them.”

Shepherd said the only other blemish on his record is a speeding ticket he was issued in upstate New York in 2004.

Sleeping with your mother-in-law, stalking teen girls, domestic violence arrest. I’m so glad to have the GOP of Georgia leading me down the straight and narrow.

I was about to send a check to this guy. I’m sure as hell glad I didn’t. I can not vote for the democrat, and too bad I can’t back this guy, Shepherd. I think he is a Party plant. I hear he is new to the district and nobody knows anything about him. Should have ran Coates again. She could have won this time. Damn the Party elitists for running Goldfarb, WTF?

Something really does not make sense. All diversion programs are entered into voluntarily by the defendant with the agreement that the judge will dismiss the charges after the defendant successfully completes the program.

I knew there was something about that beady-eyed blogger Jason Shepherd that made me throw up a little in my mouth every time I saw him. He calls Galloway to break the story about his violence, his arrest, his fake name. Why stop there “Shep”? You can beat up foreign women because they can’t report you, can they? SpaceyG, I am right behind you…

The author of the article is a Jason Shepherd devotee..he wordhips this kid. I am sure it pained him to write the article. He is supposed to be the Republicans new, hot, Top 40 Under 40 campaign they put together…He was endorsed by the Christian Coalition…wonder if they knew that he was shacking up with a woman???

I do not know him personally nor his opponent but I will not vote for him. His only employment has been in politics…Ox, Gingrich et al..never a real job…passed the bar but doing nothing with it from waht I see..just a lay-about waiting for a state check…..Tried to post on PP but it was taken down…guess they don’t like alternative views

Why do guys with “father issues” run for office? Are they looking for affirmation and validation they lacked from home? Why do they seek out endorsements and cheese-up to a camera at every waking moment from prominent people who don’t even know them? Why do guys who have control-freak mother issues take their mother’s maiden name and then shack up with women who beat them up? Why do guys like Jason Goldfarb aka Shepherd who has a short-man complex send off for a mail-order bride from Germany? Ugh! Remember how we all knew Clinton was a sleaze? Get a clue folks!

I have ran several campaigns and there’s a school of thought that the candidate with the most dirt should come out and announce their dirt first so it won’t be as damaging. But, I am afraid this is way too damaging to recover from. Why do you think Preston Smith lost to Sam Olens? Shepherd should throw in the towel on this one. He’s done. Game over. It was an uphill climb with this seat being fought for 3 times before now by a pretty amazing lady. It’s a Dem seat until redistricting. Hello Terry Johnson. House District 37 was made for you it seems.

Jason Shepherd is still boring… Even a sex scandal and jail time can’t raise the dead in his campaign. Yawn.

How do you tell the difference between a Democratic and a ‘publican?

Democrats like to have sex with women. ‘Publicans like to use them as punching bags.

Jason Sheppie is quite desperate. He alerts Jim Galloway to expose himself. Then he threatens to sue Blog for Democracy [good luck with that]. Can we say “publicity stunt” or “fund raising ploy”? “Sorority sister” sounds like Jason’s wife! This is just plain creepy and weird.

Ummmm… does anyone know Mr. Shepherd’s QUALIFICATIONS or POSITIONS on the ISSUES?

It’s just like a bunch of liberals and Democrats to pile on to something like this, while ignoring, for instance, genuine, supported allegations of rape against Bill Clinton, whose private life, according to his supporters, was no one’s business. And let’s not forget the bomb-throwers and black separatists that Mr. Obama hung around with, whose existence made very little difference in his eventual election, because Democrat voters had decided that they and their ideas didn’t matter and would have no effect on Mr. Obama’s ideas of how to govern as president.

I do have a problem if Mr. Shepherd has never held a real job. We have enough professional politicians and shills in the government already. Where’s that news when we need it?

I have been doing my homework on Mr. Shepherd before this story broke. Obviously he is a Republican insider who spent a lot of time volunteering on campaigns and organizing Republican groups, leaving no question, he walks lockstep with the party establishment. And that is what scares the hell out of me. He knows so few people who actually live in the district. He dose not even have children or a job. I get an overall sick feeling about him. He just seems too slick and “well connected”. Then there is the fact that he just graduated from law school and claims to be a lawyer without actually passing the bar. Just another red flag.

[...] Shepherd claimed, ““I voluntarily went through a diversion program before it even went to court, in an effort of good faith.
