Republicans for Roy, the gun dude from Alabama, and other matters
The campaign of Democratic nominee for governor Roy Barnes has announced the formation of a steering committee of “Republicans for Roy.”
There have been clues that this was coming.
One hint was this Barnes ad on the web site of National Review, a popular Internet watering hole for conservatives:
In announcing his “Republicans for Roy” committee and its web site, Barnes made specific reference to Tom Perdue, the enfant terrible of the Georgia Republican party – and U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss’s former campaign manager.
Perdue this week called on Republican nominee Nathan Deal to withdraw – citing the candidate’s failure to reveal his dicey financial situation.
The members of “Republicans for Roy.”
– Curtis B. Avery, Jr., a retired cattle farmer in Harris County;
– Gale Buchanan, former U.S. undersecretary of agriculture, a resident of Cook County;
– Carlton E. Joyce, a Chatham County attorney;
– State Rep. Bob Lane of Statesboro, who retires this year after 30 years in the Legislature. Chairman of the House Game, Fish and Parks Committee, Lane gave Barnes $1,000 last December;
– Martin Nesmith, an Evans County businessman and Barnes appointee to the state Board of Regents;
– Berrien County Commissioner Steve Roberts;
– Former Houston County commissioner Larry Snellgrove;
– Charles B. “Charlie” Tanksley, a former Cobb County state senator and a longtime Barnes ally;
– Lisa Underwood of Lee County, the former co-chair of the Republican caucus within the Georgia Association of Educators;
– and Jeff Wainwright of Taylor County, past president of the Georgia Peach Council.

But Republicans – supporting other Republicans – may have made the most entertaining news of the day. Dale Peterson, the rifle-slinging candidate for agriculture commissioner in Alabama, has pushed out a YouTube attack on Roy Barnes – very similar to the one that made him an Internet sensation this summer:
Chris Schrimpf, spokesman for the Republican Governors Association, says his group is paying the bills on this one.

Gary Scott Holt, creator of a new Georgia political blog called The Scott Papers, says he’s filed an ethics complaint against Democratic nominee for governor Roy Barnes, for Barnes’ alleged failure to disclose expenditures as a lobbyist in 2007, while representing the Atlanta Beltline.

Charles B. “Charlie” Tanksley is more than a Barnes ally, he is Barnes’ law partner and good friend as evidenced by Barnes putting Tanklsley’s wife on the Cobb County State Court bench at the same time as King Roy was moving hisfurniture out of the Governor’s Mansion in 2002.

What’s Deal scared off? He refuses to be open and honest with the citizens of Georgia, and he’s having to rely on out of state, well, losers (he lost his election) to try and sway us? Why should Alabama be interfering with OUR election? I thought the Ga GOP was all about state’s rights and the 10th amendment argument, but they want national political groups and politicians from other states to interfere with our election.

I’m Haas Maverick and I’m here to take back the Republican Party.
I support small business and small government. I support letting the courts rule on the law and letting the elected officials make the laws. I think of myself as a Christian and I try to act with sincere virtue, but I don’t go around trying to have my way all the time because I think God is on my side. I doubt I’ve ever done anything to earn that distinction.
I support any candidate who has solid credentials and for whom it is obvious that ethics always matter.
I do not support any of these so-called “Tea Parties.” These people are a bigger threat to the Republican Party than GWB or the Iraq War. Government at any level is serious business, and there is nothing clever or cute about supporting wildcard candidates with polarizing rhetoric and no sense of political decorum.
The Republican Party was wounded in 2008, and this Tea Party business is just more filth that prevents the wound from healing. Blaming John McCain for all of our problems solves nothing and gets us nowhere. The Tea Party is nothing more than a collection of individuals who stand against everything upon which McCain is willing to compromise, and that attitude will never gain anything sustainable.
This fiasco with Nathan Deal shows that the Tea Party supports unvetted and unscrupulous candidates.
I’m not happy about doing it, but I’m voting for Roy Barnes.

Jim — They aren’t advertising on National Review per se. They are advertising through Google’s ad network of which National Review is an affiliate. They display a “window” that is actually served up from Google’s server (and uses their user determination logic). With Google Ad Sense, you can geographically target users (i.e. Georgians) on whatever site they use that is also an affiliate. The affiliate and the advertiser rarely knows (or cares) who advertises or where the advert runs … who the eyeballs are connected to is all that matters.

If you have proof to the contary, please share with us. McCain is not and has not been the mainstream of the Rep. party, at least the Rep party in Ga. John Monds is clearly the only real choice voters in Georgia have. Barnes has already been fired from this position once, and Deal has been more issues to address personally than he has time for.

Been happening in Georgia and a lot of other states for a long, long time. Remember Zell Miller? Remember him appointing Johnny Isakson to Chair the State Board of Education?. Recently, your Repub Governor Perdue appointed Democrat Rob Teilhett former member of the GA House Of Representatives (and “hubby” to former Perdue spokesperson Heather Hedrick Teilhet)to run the Indigent Defense Council. My Little Brain’s Froze Over, When did anyone tell you to leave? If you are miserable and want to stay with people you do not like, because conservatives have always and will run this state, then that is your business. I am just trying to look out for the health of all these depressed people and keep the states healthcare cost down. Depressed people are much more likly to have a premature stroke or heart attack and life is to short to be miserable all the time.

My relatives have drawn their “Yankee Line” at Macon for unknown reasons? They don`t care who your “Yankee” relatives are. To them, location trumps EVERYTHING. These people believe what they believe for no good reason.

skydog, I got your point the first time (just giving you a hard time). I know a great deal of people like this. My Grandfather drove trucks for 30 years in a union shop and he would never vote for a republican, even after all those conservatives Dems changed parties. I worked at Lockheed in the early 80’s and went to a union meeting when they decided to support Mondale, even after he said he was going to cut defense spending. I told them they were crazy to vote against their own self interest but they did not care, dems were union supporters.

I know people who told me they ‘couldn’t possibly vote for Karen Handel once they found out she had no college degree.’ I’m sure they are regretting their Deal vote now. At least, I hope they are.

Nathan Deal remains slightly ahead of Democrat Roy Barnes in the race to be the next governor of Georgia.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Georgia Voters finds Deal with 45% support, while Barnes earns 39% of the vote when leaners are included. Libertarian candidate John Monds trails with five percent (5%). Six percent (6%) prefer another candidate in the race, and five percent (5%) are undecided.

I refuse to vote in this election because all of the candidates are big fat losers, but as a Republican, I would most likely vote for Barnes if my other option was Deal. But Barnes doesn’t deserve it, either.

I voted for President bush for his second term, not because I thought he was any good, (I knew he was crap) but because I felt he was better than John (s)Kerry.
It is one of the few things in my life I have ever done that I am ashamed of. I won’t repeat the mistake. I won’t vote for Barnes because he is “not as bad” as that crook Deal. I haven’t decided if I will throw a protest vote to the Libertarians (a party that lost it’s way when Harry Brown died) of just leave the Governors part of the ballot blank. But I can’t vote for either one of those pieces of foul dung.
I COULD have thrown a vote for either Karen Handel of Thurmond Baker though. As a matter of fact, I DID vote for one of them. Which one, isn’t important since both honorable candidates lost to scum bags. Someone has already made the correct comment in this blog: We Georgians DESERVE what we get because WE decided who the candidates for Governor were going to be.

he AJC also reported the following about Nathan Deal’s business partner; “Kenneth Cronan, while serving on the board that regulates used auto parts dealers, ran a business that collected fees running into six figures every year for allowing state workers to inspect vehicles at his Gainesville salvage yard.” If Nathan Deal is his partner then he also shared in these profits. This guy is totally corrupt.
