Roy Barnes cancels an Eddie Long fundraiser

From the Associated Press:

Campaign officials for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Roy Barnes say they have canceled a fundraiser that was to be hosted by a pastor at the center of a sexual coercion lawsuit.

Barnes spokesman Emil Runge says the event was canceled Tuesday, when the lawsuit involving two young men was first reported. The campaign would not say Wednesday if the event was scrapped before learning of the allegations against Bishop Eddie Long.

Long is pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, a 25,000-member megachurch near Atlanta. He is one of Barnes’ more prominent black supporters and hosted a fundraiser for the former governor during the Democratic primary.

Long also donated $5,000 to Barnes’ bid.

Runge called the allegations “troubling” but said the campaign wouldn’t comment further until more was known.

The Republican Governors Association is already asking whether Barnes intends to return Long’s campaign donation.

Thats a tough position for Barnes.

On one hand, if he goes on with the fund raiser, it will be used against him. If he cancels it, it will be used against him.

I have been watching this Bishop Long story, and for the life of me I can’t figure out what the accusers are actually suing him over.

Apparently, all were legal age in the alleged relationships and they don’t say he raped them, so whats the deal?

Glad to see him cancel this ahead of time, instead of waiting to get flack for it. That’s real integrity folks. Deal could learn something.

The deal is that it’s related to guy-on-guy sex, which leads to noisy revulsion by certain immature freaks.

Ohhhh….I don’t know. Perhaps the moral issue that might arise from a pastor who preaches hate and intolerance against gays, only to have it come to light he is one? Or that someone in a position of power and trust abuses that and exploits it for his own sexual gratification?

Is there *anything* these holy rollers can do that you’ll find intolerable? Or at least make you fools stop giving them money?

What is “Sexual Coersion”?

Is it illegal to talk someone into having sex with you? If so, there are a whole lot of us in trouble!

Roger, I am not a “holy roller”. I don’t know Long or give his church money. I am just curious as to the legal basis for the suit.

I am asking questions because I don’t know the answers, not to defend someone.

Does his job make a difference legally?

I just don’t get it.

There is one thing you can count on with regard to this. If Bishop Long contacted sttorney Roy Barnes with the cash in his hand, he would have hired himself an attorney.

I don’t believe that Barnes has quite completely dodged this bullet . . . yet. Time (and not much of it, either) will tell.

Roy has another engagement to attend. He will appear with a large group of builders on T.V. to build a house for his opponent who is about to loose his. He has no building skills but will be with the group who yells out- “Move that bus!!!

Obviously Roy Barnes is just like Eddie Barnes, and should get indicted and tried in court side by side.

O.K., that is sarcasm to go along with all of the comments about Nathan Deal on the AJC hit pieces about his daughter and son-in-law finances where Deal invested/loaned money.

Imno: my reading of it is that the basis of allegation is that the men were 16 when the relationship started and Long was their pastor, making it sort-of like a teacher-student relationship. I doubt it’s illegal, just because the case is not being taken up by a prosecutor; but it does appear to be unseemly for a mega-church Baptist pastor.

Will this rub off on Roy? Unlikely. It’s too far removed… unlike Deal’s issues.

Yes, you can bet the farm and your butt that the $5,000.00 will be returned. Reporters can ask Barnes about Long tomorrow and the response they will get will be, “Eddie who?”

Barnes is a snake, but he does remember which hole to crawl into if the need arises.

Be curious to know the ages of the young men making the allegations. Were they under 18 at the time? (Can’t blame Barnes for cancelling the fundraiser. With the temper of the modern media, a mere allegation in a lawsuit amounts to “fact.”) Who can say what will come of the lawsuit? And if the men were minors at the time of the alleged coercion, are there criminal penalties possible? Another interesting thought (if the allegations are factual) did people at the church who knew (or shoukd have known) what was going on, engage in a cover-up? If so, they may be liable for damages also.

He who is without sin, cast the first stone. This matter appears to be in a legal status pending guilt or innocence. The media has an uncanny way of showing up. God is the judge and He will deal accordingly with Bishop Long and others who are involved in this unfortunate alledged incidence.
My prayer is for Bishop Long, his wife and family and the church local and worldwide. Through this timely situation my prayer is that true prayer, repentance, forgiveness, deliverance, cleansing, restoration and revival for God’s holiness grace and love to permeate the hearts of all involved. Amen!

I don’t believe that sex with either sex at age 16 is allowed/consensual in GA. Wasn’t there a boy/young man in prison last year because he received oral sex from an underage girl? (lots of efforts to have his sentence commuted, etc. as he was in for 10 years, or some crazy thing like that). If a DA is unwilling to take up the case, that’s probably because he/she sees a small/no chance of conviction.

Have to wait and find out whether the Bishop is guilty or not. If guilty, wouldn’t be the first down low guy. If innocent, wouldn’t be the first/last man who was smeared for some money.

Can we finally have a serious national conversation about megachurch preachers abusing their tax-exempt status with political activism (among other wrongs)?

Candidates in the future should try to make their campaigns as secular as possible. Trying to get some easy votes out of a few large congregations actually invites political disaster, because things like this will happen again.

To the commenter who couldn’t come up with his own handle: 16 is the “age of consent” in Georgia. That’s one of the reasons why this appears to not be a legal issue for the government; these are civil suits being filed for “coercion”, not criminal suits.

I guess I’ve just never heard of “Sexual Coersion”. It seems like an awfully slippery slope.

You say, oh well I wouldn’t have had sex wiith that person, but they coerced me. I just don’t know how you can prove that.

What is coersion? If I tell a woman I love her so she will sleep with me and then never call her again, is that coersion?

They had to file civil suits because the age of consent in Georgia is 16, so there is no criminal suit to be filed. I think it is noteworthy that the attorney has stated THEY DO NOT WANT TO AND ARE NOT GOING TO SETTLE THE SUITS, BECAUSE IT IS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY. Seeing that it has been revealed that the “victims” came to her quite some time ago and she waited this long to file says to me that she has had quite a bit of time to compile solid evidence. I have a feeling that this thing is about to get REALLY ugly.

I can’t understand how someone that’s taken such a strong stance against homosexuals turn out to be one him self. This is so typical of many people that are so vocal about a particular group of people interest. I have no problem with gay people they are funny to me; but I do have a problem with someone that stands in from of 25,000 people and preach something and turn out to NOT practice what they preach. How Sad.

By the looks of it, considering how the Bishop Long has been treating his non-profit charity and congregation, they have been getting screwed by him for years!!

The suit is a civil suit, not a criminal investigation, don’t confuse the two.

Also, I’m wondering why the IRS is after me to pay $2K in taxes and why this guy is walking around after taking over 50% of a non-profit’s revenues as personal compensation with no IRS investigation pending…

Vestima – I agree for me it would have been a different story if Bishop Long wasn’t so actively involved in influencing the GA Legislature to not extend marriage rights (not that he was the difference). But he organized and led a march for goodness sakes.

As to the coercion – 16 is the age of consent but certain types of relationships of control can lead to criminal charges if one is under 18. This civil suits is not alleging that, what they are alleging is that he used his position of power or influence. Also troubling for the church is that it appears he may have used church funds in these endeavors.

And yes its he has not been found guilty. But this lawyer knows her stuff and has stated she has emails and documents supporting the charges. I don’t think she would say that if she couldn’t back it up. The fact they traveled so much together to international countries seems like something that can be verified as well as the sleeping arrangements.

I’m not saying he is guilty just laying out the problems if he is. And if he his I am sure the church will go on and that the Bishop will be ok. The members are good people as are those who work for the church.

I’ve never criticized the former Rev. Jerry Falwell’s stance on sexual issues including homosexuality because he seemed to practice what he preached. I never criticized President Clinton in the Lewinski affair as he did not pass judgment on others. That was for Hillary and him to work out. But the Newt Gingrich’s, Jimmy Swaggert’s and Eddie Longs as well as others who cast the proverbial stones find that God rewards them in kind.

Bubba. I totally agree. We are looking over the point. I am not claiming that I’m so holy and washed by the lamb but I’m not in front of a church of 25,000 people telling them thus sayeth the lord. This guy is preaching to millions and allegedly he has been sleeping with MEN. Again I do not have a problem with gays; they are gay and they own it and good for them. I guess my anger comes from the fact that I hate the “DL” thing, it’s scary. What about the wife, the kids, the “DL” thing has hurt the ones closest him. If you are going to be gay then be man enough to just take your arse to the other side don’t live a lie. This guy has taken millions of money in from various groups and the members preaching on the notion that homosexuals are on the way to hells fire and he turns out to be one. Are we all watching the same movie? For get all of the other stuff, allegedly he has turned out to be a fake. I am actually sitting here hoping it not to be true it makes the church look really bad.

HE IS MARRIED (Adultery), and the fact that text messages and emails can be TRACKED with 100% accuracy to IP and cell towers, and depending on the nature of the information dissemenated (type of information in those electronic transmissions)…it would be DAMNING to the man’s “credibility” (that which some people have given him).

He’s married, and he would be legally liable for using his power (coersion) to get away with whatever he may have been doing. Yes, guilty until proven inncoent, but one person states something to the extent of a trip they took overseas! Staying in a church owned luxury home….this will do anything but settle if true…it will come out and VICIOUSLY.
