Maybe you don’t kick a man when he’s down – but in politics, you sure do stick your leg out if he’s stumbling.
The campaign of Democratic nominee for governor Roy Barnes is out this morning with a new, coffee-shop attack ad on Republican rival Nathan Deal.
We’re told that it’s intended as a parody of an anti-Barnes TV ad issued last week – to absolutely no fanfare – by the Republican Governors Association.
In his reply, Barnes doesn’t mention Deal’s personal finance problems, but – yet again – makes a large point of the former congressman’s Washington connections. Perhaps the most notable aspect of the ad is its target – Deal’s wheelhouse of white male voters.
The Barnes script:
Actor No. 1: You know, times was better when Roy Barnes was governor.
Actor No. 2: Yup. I had a job.
Actor No. 1: He brought in 235,000 jobs.
Actor No. 2: Yup. Made Georgia work.
Actor No. 1: Reduced class sizes.
Actor No. 2: Yup.
Actor No. 1: Shoot, he even lowered my property taxes.
Actor No. 2: So this Washington guy Deal is lying?
Actor No. 1: Slippery as a bag of snakes.
Actor No. 2: I guess we can call him a shady Deal.
Male voiceover: Nathan Deal. Too corrupt, even for Congress.
Here’s the RGA ad:
The script:
Actor No. 3: Remember Roy Barnes?
Actor No. 4: Yep.
Actor No. 3: Remember how arrogant Roy was back when he was governor?
Actor No. 4: Yeah.
Actor No. 3: And remember how he made Georgia last, dead last, in education?
Actor No. 4: Yeah.
Actor No. 3: And remember how Georgia led the nation in job losses?
Actor No. 4: Yeah.
Actor No. 3: And then he tried to blame everybody but himself.
Actor No. 4: I remember.
Actor No. 3: Then you remember King Roy.
Actor No. 4: I wish I could forget.
Male voiceover: Roy Barnes. Once was enough.

3:15 PM. Just watched the new Roy Barnes ad. I’m leaving in just a few minutes to go take advantantage of early voting AND VOTE NATHAN DEAL FOR GOVERNOR AND FOR ANY REPUBLICANS ON THE BALLOT. Nathan Deal and his wife may have made a wrong move in backing their children at the time and in the manner they did, but they’re better people than Roy Barnes. Roy is negative, sneaky and dirty and it going to get him beat for sure.

Roybama @ 11:16 a.m. thoughtfully reminded us of some of the consequences for voting in Deal as Governor: ” Appointments: The governor makes Judicial Appointments as well as many other state government service appointments.” More payoff potentials!
I just got back from voting early against Deal and for Barnes… what about YOU??

Matt D: How about something to the tune of “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” except instead of the fiddle it could have something in it about old car bodies?

Roy Barnes, as bad as they want to make him look, he’s not as corrupt or broke as Nathan Deal. Only in Georgia they would elect a close-to-file-Bankruptcy corrupt fella like Nathan Deal for governor.
Talking about that Barnes made Georgia dead last in education. Sonny made Georgia First in Cheating!
I say, Anyone but Nathan Deal!

When a candidate has no personal qualities, his only recourse is to make the other candidate look as bad, or worse, than he is. Barnes is counting on voters having poor memories and overlooking the poor job he did last time around. Deal is counting on people believing his own lack of recollection of his activities in Congress and $2.8 million in loans. Great choice we have. Do we want to be shot or stabbed? Either way, we’re dead!

If/when he releases his full tax returns and schedules and fraud is shown then he will be arrested. I bet he is scamming business losses and hding cash income. How else was he ever going to pay his debts other than hidden income?

Barnes didn’t do a poor job last time unless you care about the stupid flag, or him actually standing up to the teachers union.
Facts are the state of GA increased its weath dramatically under Barnes and had a much lower un-employment rate. Purdue is the doofus who has run this state into the ground……….

Roy if you are reading this I just want you to know I voted for Nathan Deal today. The remainder of my votes were for Democrats except for Sistie Hudson. I voted for her Republican opponent.

It really bothers me that people on all sides are calling each other names. It is fine to not agree, but please be considerate enough to respect the other’s opinion. I am a Democrat (not a Dummycrat, but I have been known to vote for a Republican or two), but I would never stoop so low as to call a Republican an ugly name.

As someone who was a state worker while Barnes was in office I can say that the economy was better. I got raises, and cost of living increases. While working during Purdue time in office I got no raises, supply cuts, no cost of living increases, and health premiums went up. I feel that Barnes doesn’t need to say anything about himself because his record speaks for itself. I feel the same way about Deal. If you do your homework you can clearly see who is the best choice for GA, and it is not Deal.

Vote for Nathan Deal…. Roy Barnes is doing just what he started out to do. Make Nathan Deal look bad. IMO this does not make Roy Barnes look like the saint. If you people believe everything that is sprinted and everything in the media then all of you are sick. I agree we don`t have muchof a selection but Barnes had his chance now give Mr Deal the same chance.
Georgia Needs Mending

Georgia has had it doubly bad for the last 9 years. First (that man tried to kill my daddy) Dubya and our own Yorkshire hog have all but destroyed us. Who in the h*** would elect a veterinarian or a junkyard snake, as divisive as they are, to oversee a state so badly in need of strong and logical leadership. We all do better when we all do better. I am a native Georgian, white and so sick of hearing about Bubba’s Southern ancestor worship and others whose great grandfathers were slaves. It is time to shut-up and come together before the rest of the world totally “eats our lunch”. We all know why Perdue has looked the other way, ignored and encouraged division in our once great state. He’s a racist, like all Republicans who can not conceive of being happy unless they have someone else to make them feel superior. President Obama was sent to us because all we do is fight over lowering the bar. That is all this country has done since President Carter. Time for us to “man up”, really. If you are a liar and a thief, then vote for the person you feel so close to and whose values you embrace. It is not just beezniz. Truet Cathey knows business is all about ethics, it is not seperate. So if you want to vote for the “four letter word” serpent, be sure to put it on a bumper sticker and keep it like the idiots that continue to show the Bush/Cheney sticker. Be proud so the rest of us can have a very good laugh. And one last thing, it would take someone with one billion dollars, spending one thousand dollars a day for 2,700 years to arrive at a zero balance. Still want a tax cut for the top, upper per cent income wise? And you thought only people getting food stamps are welfare driven. LOL
