The Insider offers you a quick-and-dirty transcript of the conference call that Republican nominee for governor Nathan Deal held with supporters this morning, to calm angst over articles dealing with his financial situation.

GOP nominee for governor Nathan Deal addresses reporters Wednesday. Aaron Gould Sheinin, asheinin@ajc.com
The message Deal was trying to send:
– The loans he co-signed on an outdoor store were made to support his daughter and her husband, which any voter should understand;
– He is not insolvent;
– Intimations that his debt, $2 million of which will come due in February, have any bearing on his ability to govern are out of line and of a political nature;
– If anything, his financial troubles mean that he understands the pain of the average Georgian;
Overall, the remarks are similar to what the Republican nominee told reporters on Wednesday. I’ve placed in bold the two paragraphs that are likely to quickly show up in news reports. Otherwise, Deal’s remarks below are untouched:
”Good morning. This is Nathan Deal.
“I want to thank all of you for being on the call this morning. I wanted to talk to you about something that has developed within the last week with regard to financial obligations that my wife and I have.
“It’s the kind of issue that sometimes, of course, surfaces in the midst of a political campaign. I believe that one of the responsibilities of parents is to help their children. And several years ago, our middle daughter and her husband, who – they’d both been traveling all across the country on their jobs – wanted to be closer to home, since they had the youngest of our grandchildren.
“My wife and I decided that we would help them in that venture. They were opening an outdoor store in Habersham County. Everything was going very well – as it was going with a lot of things in our economy at that time.
“But suddenly, of course, the economy turned. And that downturn is the worst we’ve seen in more than a generation. It obviously has taken down some of the largest banks. It has taken down some of the largest businesses, some of the largest insurance companies all across our country — and certainly hundreds of thousands of small business people across the country as well as right here in our state.
“Unfortunately, my children were caught in that same process. They’re store had to be closed. My wife and I had agreed to guarantee the loans for that undertaking. We’ve always believed that a responsibility of a parent is to help their children, and we certainly intended to do that.
“The obligations are certainly outstanding, and we are in the process of addressing those obligations. The press would have you believe we are insolvent, and that is far from the truth. We have assets that are going to be liquidated, including the place where the business was in operation, as well as other assets that we are willing to sacrifice in order to live up to our obligations.
“We believe that’s the responsible thing to do. Now, of course, on top of all of this is the implication that this in some way should have something to do with the governor’s race. I, quite frankly, don’t think that it has. I believe, if anything, this is an illustration of the fact that you need a governor who understands the pain that Georgians are facing.
“And certainly, many, many Georgians are facing the same kind of problems that my family has incurred in this business venture. Now, I’ve made investments over the years. Some have been good, some have been bad. This was an investment that was made on behalf of a child, and I think when you try to help your children, that’s probably always the right thing to do.
“Now, we’re going to live up to our obligations. It has nothing to do, in my opinion, with this campaign. The press would perhaps have you believe that this is an indication that I cannot govern this state. I tell you that it has nothing to do with that.
“In fact, I believe the fact that I understand the pain of Georgians is all the more important as I enter the governor’s office.
“Now, yesterday, I believe there was another article about another business venture that I’m involved in – a small business that is a very successful business. Something that my partner and I started from scratch.
“Like any small business, if you are a stockholder, you are sometimes asked to be guarantors on a loan for the corporation. That’s exactly what those loans are. The assets of the corporation and the assets that we own as individuals for the business far exceed any of those obligations.
“The loans are performing loans, and it is a profitable business. There again, this is simply an effort to divert attention away from the campaign for governor. And I want to tell you that I appreciate the fact that many of you have been reaching out to me and my wife, and to our family.
“We thank you for your prayers and your words of encouragement and support. And I want you to know that from the beginning of this campaign, that I’ve been attacked. And I think the reason is that the other party understood that I was the strongest candidate, the one most likely to win the governorship of this state.
“And, of course, the polls still continue to indicate that, and have consistently indicated it throughout the entire campaign. We intend to go forward with strength. We intend to provide the kind of leadership that Georgians will expect from a governor. We will do it on our personal level, and we expect to do it at the state level as well.
“These are still difficult times for many Georgians. And I’ll be a governor who has a perfectly reliable understanding of those challenges that Georgians continue to face. And I’ll be a governor who will work very hard to help make their lives better.
“Theses are the kinds of things, unfortunately, that are the dark side of politics. I think it is extremely regrettable when anyone tries to bring a candidate’s family into a political campaign.
“My children have suffered and will continue to suffer the consequences of an effort where they put all of their strengths, all of their time, all of their energies into trying to be a successful small business. That’s what Georgia ought to encourage.
“That’s what has made our state and our country strong – people who are willing to invest their lives, invest their own fortunes, and invest their futures. I am proud that my children were willing to take this venture. My wife and I still stand behind them. We’ll live up to our obligations, and we will move forward.
“I thank you for all that you’ve done. I ask you to continue to work very, very hard. November 2 is coming quickly. This is the kind of campaign where people need to understand that our state has great strengths. Just as families and individuals have suffered the consequences of a downturned economy, so has our state.
“The lessons that all of us learn from that are the kind of lessons that will not only make families and individuals, but will make our state stronger. That’s the kind of leadership I’ll provide. Thank you once again for all of your support, thank you for your prayers. Let’s get out and work extremely hard. That’s what my wife and my family and all of us are going to do…..”

I voted for Karen Handel in the Republican primary. After she lost that race, I have attempted to support the nominee Nathan Deal. I can no longer support him and certainly will not vote for him. I will NOT vote for a democrat. I will vote for the Libertarian candidate for governor and will vote against every democrat on the remainder of my ballot.
Nathan Deal should have bowed out of this campaign when the results of the ethics investigation proved damaging to him. He chose not to do so and has left the Republican Party in Georgia in disarray. Nathan Deal is responsible for his actions and those actions have consequences.

Thank you Mr. Deal. I have been voting for Democrats and, so far, have been satisfied with their efforts. I wasn’t going to bother to vote in this red state, but now I feel compelled to vote against you. I think there are many other voters who feel the same way. There is no way I can sit by and let a bankrupt (financially and morally) individual like you lead this state. If you were a Democrat and this were a blue state, I would not vote for you

I’m an average Georgian and I cannot fathom being $2 million in debt. If I were, I cannot fathom “forgetting” this debt so as not to place it on disclosure forms. It would weigh on my average Georgian mind like battleship chains with a 2-ton anchor. I wouldn’t be able to think about anything else!
People go on and on about Roy Barnes being a trial lawyer. So is Nathan Deal. Our next Governor is going to be a trial lawyer. Now: do you want a successful on, or one who is flat-out broke and who appears one step ahead of his troubles.

A vote for the libertarian candidate just means a runoff and there is no way I will vote for someone that sued his own state to let illegals vote or will get in lock step with Obama, so I will hold my nose and vote for Deal. Worse case is that Deal has to step down and Cagel becomes Governor. Well maybe that is the best case.

I believe Deal is a good man, and would be an experienced chief executive. But this baggage he carries into the campaign, against a refurbished, rehashed John Edwards/John Kerry/Obama/big government/tax and spend/loser democRat retread SHOULD have been a cakewalk.

He insults our intelligence AGAIN by claiming to understand our pain? Raise your hand if you think the average Georgian can get a loan for $2 mil. Raise your hand if you think he *really* plans to pay off $4 mil in debt with a $135K/yr job.
Clearly this man has ‘nads for brains if he thinks we have *bleep* for brains. We’d have to, to believe this garbage.

Let’s see… we have Nathan Deal, a true Conservate, Roy Barnes a Liberal Democrat, and Monds, a new Libertarian candidate. Let’s just hope that all of these attacks on Nathan Deal do not split the Conservative vote and put Barnes back in office for another four years.

Mr Deal, if this family investment was something to be so proud of, why did you hide your finances for so long? Why not fully disclose your tax returns? Why did you omit this from your filing with the State Ethics Commission? Why did you omit financial matters from your reports to the Congressional Ethics Committee?
Nathan deal is a liar. His campaign is a calculated gamble to obtain public office to keep his creditors at bay. He hides things until investigative reports uncover the the truth, then gives dishonest explanations that do not wash.

Is Deal the only person to ever to have financial problems? No. I believe he will liquidate, pay off some of the debt and then refinance the rest of the debt. Rich people do this all the time (Donald Trump for example). This is really not that big a deal when you compare it to what kind of mess Georgia is going to be in due to Obama care (cost the state will pay for increased medicaid rolls), cap and trade, increased federal taxes, ect… Now do you want a elect a Governor that is going to stand up and fight for us or a Governor that will go along with all of Obama’s plans? Do you want a Governor that will help reapportion more Dems out of congress or one that is going to put more in to back Obama? The choice is clear. We have already learned that elections have consequences and we will be paying for years the consequences of our last Presidential election. Do we do our part to help roll back the damage or do we help with Obama continue with his radical agenda?

Nathan Deal is completely delusional if he thinks his “family and small business” finances have nothing to do with his campaign or his ability to run the state of Georgia. These issues are a direct reflection on his ability to lead or operate the state of Georgia through our FINANCIAL hardships. As governor, Deal would be making business decisions; as well as decisions that will affect the finances of all the families in the state.
Only a lying idiot would go ahead with a conference call and make those asinine statements; while holding up his head. But, then again only an idiot would vote for this man after hearing what was said.

It is now common for employers to do a credit check on any prospective employees. There is a reason they do that. Employers have learned that how a person handles their money is a good predictor of what kind of employee they will be.
I am unpersuaded by Deal’s excuse for his poor financial judgment that he was only “helping his family”. I would think a helpful family member would dissuade others from irresponsibly taking out millions of dollars in loans for which they would have no way of paying it back should anything go wrong. It wasn’t like his daughter was in trouble, and THEN he helped her. No, he was an investor in her business and then continued to assist her getting further and further into debt. I also know a bit about math, and Mr. Deal has not explained precisely how he isn’t insolvent. He is $5 million in debt, and unless he comes up with secret assets not reported upon by the AJC, he has no way of paying it back, especially not by February 2011. It’s like he thinks we are all so stupid here to believe his rationalizations, obfuscations, and justifications.

None are so blind as those who refuse to see. Republicans were required to sign a loyalty oath, why don’t they vet their candidates. One guy was prevented from running on the Republican ballot because he wouldn’t sign it. But Deal was allowed to run even though he had just resigned from Congress under a cloud questioning his ethics. Likewise, a Republican candidate won the seat (held by the infamous Glen Richardson) even though he committed adultery with his mother-in-law. What a party of losers.

I’d like to know how a congressmen making $100k a year, with a $2 million loan on the books, get’s approved for another $2 million loan when it’s obvious he can’t pay off both. Even business’s in the black can’t get even modest loans these days, and you’re going to tell me he never used his congressional office to make that bit of voodoo happen. Basically, he’s asking Georgian’s to make him Governor so that we can pay off his bills.
Now I am a Democrat, but even if Deal was one too I wouldn’t be voting for him. Political differences are one thing, but should take any person three seconds to see that this man would be detrimental to the already fragile economic state Georgia is in. So for the good of our state, I implore my Republican friends to vote either Libertarian or Democrat in the general election. No Deal, I do not think I am delusional at all. I believe there are a vast majority of the electorate in this state is so angry at the Obama and the Dems that they are going to come out in mass in Nov and vote a straight Rep. ticket. A great deal of these people do not watch the local news (and the ones that do do not believe the main stream media any longer) or read this paper, they do not follow politics and only occasionally vote. They just believe Obama and the Dems are ruining this country and they want to send a message. Their message is going to be to go into the booth and vote a straight republican ticket. These people alone will give Deal anywhere between 48 to 52% of the vote (Deal would have received 57 or 58% if not for these stories).

What an idiot Deal and his supporters are. He is now trying to blame others for his dumbass hunting store going under. Dumbass Deal obviously never had a business plan and just figured he could start another crooked business and avoid taxes like his others and get loans from his crooked mates at the local bank.
All he has done is helped a regional bank go under costing the state 135 million dollars and avoided paying taxes on his other “cash” businesses.
Deal personifies “lack of personal responsibility” so I cannot understand how republicans can have any trust in him doing any good for our state. The way he hid this does also was basically a fraud on the voters in the runoffs who would have voted Handle if this had come out.

I can see the series of commercials and mass mailings now, linking Barnes to Obama about health care and increased taxes. I can see the ad that will be run stating Barnes sued the state to allow illegals and convicted felons to vote. Do you really think these angry voters are going to care if Deal has had failed business ventures? This is why Deal will win. I do not think it is too delusional to look at this in a realistic manner because once Deals team can attach Barnes to Obama it is all over. Why do you think Barnes ran and hid in S. Georgia when Obama came to Atlanta? He knows it as well.

Barnes is just as crooked as Deal is. He had 4 years as Governor how did he change Education or effect anything? I think it was the teachers that gave him the boot because they knew his education plans were not in the best interest of the children.
You have one of those $100,000 jobs, or does this mean you are a carpetbagger that came to Georgia for the money? If you really think we are all “dunbassess” then we will not be sad if you leave and go on back to NY or Mass.

Special interest looking for you to return the favor should you be elected? It seems that most Georgians are not able to liquidate their assets on demand. It takes someone that would be interested in these assets. I lost a property to foreclosure simply because I couldn’t find a buyer or renter that would pay he price I needed to stay out of the red. Please read again what Congressmane Deal stated (or what was reported in this story)
“Like any small business, if you are a stockholder, you are sometimes asked to be guarantors on a loan for the corporation. That’s exactly what those loans are. The assets of the corporation and the assets that we own as individuals for the business far exceed any of those obligations.

Governor, an office requiring a potentiallt tough statewide campaign? Do you remember that? That decision not to run for Governior was made after this supposed tryst occurred. Please leave Nathan Deal alone. He’s exactly the kind of politicians that the conservative party likes to support. He’s financially sound, a small business owner and his morals are beyond reproach. He’s a family man who pays all of his bills and taxes on time. He would never hide anything from his beloved supporters. He has those good old fashion southern values and is family oriented. And he hasn’t cheated on his wife, YET.
The democrats are just out to get him, just look at how they are pitching his financial mess as something to worry about. We don’t have to worry, if the kitchen gets too hot in the Governor’s mansion; Governor Deal will just leave. He did the same thing as our Representative, when things got hot in D.C. There is absolutely nothing unethical about walking away from your obligations; financial or otherwise. It’s the way we do things; in our world.
Deal is a wonderful father who chooses to help his daughter and son-in-law; because they worked hard for their $2 million dollar assistance. Plus, if he had died and they inherited the money, it would have gone mostly to taxes. No good conservative would want that to happen to his “middle” daughter and son-in-law; because they worked so hard to earn their way in life. I mean you have to work hard to please a crook. Oops, did I say that. Well, I have to be honest some time.
People like Deal and me don’t like handouts to the poor, but we are willing to borrow money to handout to our family. It’s the conservative way. Plus, if you borrow money you must show you can pay it back. Or I guess the banks will garnish Deals pay; when he becomes Governor. I’m sure since he will be living in the Governors mansions for free, with the bills paid and food on the table; it won’t matter that he’s not getting paid. We have absolutely nothing to worry about. It’s the conservative way.

It’s really pathetic that the best the Republican Party can do is Nathan Deal. One of his businesses had a no bid sweetheart deal with the state of GA for several years. He lied on his financial disclosure forms. His judgment is so bad that he and his wife put their net worth at risk on a high risk retail venture, then he wraps it in what used to be the refuge of Democrats, “for the children”. The bank that made the loans on this venture was closed by the FDIC and cited for its bad lending practices. Does anybody think that Deal’s status as a member of the U.S. Congress didn’t have anything to do with his ability to even get the loans?
That’s all we need, a broke crook in the governor’s mansion, looking to quickly rebuild his net worth.

He has no clue what the average person is going through in this economy. And I obviously have no clue how much more $$$ can be “made” by the governor than the salary itself. td,
I am from Georgia and MOST of my relatives are still here and still Democrats. (I know you were talking about white folks, so I’ll tell you they don’t come any whiter than me.) You want to talk about the flip from D to R in this state? Oh! Oh! Oh! I can answer that, Mr. Kotter.
The Republican “southern strategy” started long before Reagan had the bad taste to announce in Philadelphia, Mississippi. (Where yankee civil rights workers go to die.) When the civil rights movement grew in strength and visibility, there were two kinds of Southern Democrats: (1) Those like my family who said, “This is right. This needs to happen.” (2) Those who said, we don’t need those n*****s thinking they have rights! The GOP gobbled up type 2 by explaining that whatever problems they had, it was the fault of n****s and “libruls.” NEXT WAVE: Hard-working blue collar and barely white collar folks who found themselves recessioned in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. They came down here to the land of cotton, pecans, and snowless winters to discover something AMAZING! Not only was there work to be had, but they could afford to buy a house in our cheap southern land. They could get something NICE! They worked and wound up next to golf courses, living the ‘merican dream, and then looked at the less fortunate and said, “I got MINE! I worked for it! Scrooooooo them!” Never mind that the “wealth” they worked for had more to do with real estate prices than anything else. The GOP makes them feel “special” while still pointing fingers at the n****s and the little brown people as the source of all their maladies.

We need to return to what our Founding Fathers gave us — a Constitution that laid out very precisely what governments’ role should be. Where in the Constitution does it say we should have Social Security, Medicare, or any of these other communist-inspired, social programs? Where does it say that? And we should also consider returning just to our first Ten Amendments. The others are unnecessary and are also inspired by special interest groups like feminists and other radical elements. We need men like Nathan Deal who are true conservatives and are being attacked by radicals and communists. I/m voting for Nathan Deal, a true American and Georgian.

The logical conclusion to this statement is that since Mr. Deal is not insolvent, and his daughter has declared bankruptcy, he and his wife should borrow even more money to help them with their financial situation. What kind of message is he sending to his own grown children, as well as mine, who keep asking for money. May answer to them has been “support yourself”. Georgia must remember…..Barnes put his political future on the line by leading the racially-charged push to shrink the Confederate battle emblem on the state flag, he voted “against” a bill to create a state holiday honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Barnes also pressed to build a “$2 billion highway’ — dubbed the Northern Arc — to relieve traffic congestion along the perimeter outside of Atlanta but ran into fierce opposition from local residents who said the roadway would lower their property values. And Barnes faced allegations of cronyism after owners of large tracts of land along the highway’s proposed route were found to have “contributed to Barnes’ campaign”. The proposal was eventually scrapped. And they talk about Deal…

td:
Let’s also get something else straight. Barnes did not “cost the state millions because he sued it to allow illegals and convicted felons access to the voting booth.” The republican legislature who passed the Voter ID law did. You see, there were initially two companion suits filed: one at the federal level and one at the state level (Barnes’ suit). The federal court first ruled that the law was basically a “poll tax”…you know those laws that kept black people from voting pre-Civil Rights era? So Georgia spent millions (at the beginning of the recession), under the direction of Karen Handel and others, making sure that Voter IDs would not cost anything and making sure that every single voter was informed about the need for Voter ID. Then the federal court let the system stand after the state made huge modifications to the law.
Barnes sued under the state constitution and other laws at the same time, trying to protect LEGAL voters’ right to vote, NOT trying to help illegals vote.
Someone has made a good point about this BS theory of “helping illegals vote”: why would an illegal do anything to make state authorities check his citizenship?
Finally, you republicans are into vote control: for example: DIEBOLD voting machines with no paper record; no paper record for the voter to verify that his/her vote was cast properly; cake-walk absentee voting that requires NO Voter ID.

To anybody from the AJC who might be reading the comments on this blog, congratulations on your excellent story on Deal from earlier this week:
http://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-politics-elections/deal-could-face-financial-613928.html
I would like to raise a couple of questions based on the article that I hope the AJC’s reporters are following up on. Here’s the first:
“For Deal to repay the Wilder Outdoors loan, aides said, he has no choice but to sell his most valuable asset: his home in Gainesville.
Deal bought the property seven years ago for $430,000, according to public records. On 5 acres, it features a main house of about 4,000 square feet, a 1,900-square-foot guest house and a pool. Deal listed the property for sale about a year ago for $985,000, its assessed market value, but has not found a buyer.”
How many people in Georgia have a 129% gain on a residence bought 7 years ago AFTER high end real estate prices have dropped by at least 30-40%? Unless the houses were in a severe state of disappear, how was a property in Gainesville with 5 acres, 2 houses with almost 6000 square feet and a pool worth only $430,000? Did Deal put a lot of money into extensive renovations to account for this huge jump in market value?
What were the sale prices of comparable properties in Gainesville in 2003? Who did Deal buy the house from? Any chance the house was sold to Deal at a price far under the market value as an under the table payoff?

The last few businesses to move to GA came b/c Perdue handed them tax revenue as “incentives”. We’re not talking about a few % off of state income taxes (which wouldn’t matter since they have no net income right now)…NCR actually collects payroll taxes of its employees and keeps them for itself. For NCR that was $130M over ~5yrs. That’s nearly 50% of their annual net income. Also don’t forget the CEO couldn’t be bothered to move down to low tax GA and prefers to stay in NYC which has some of the highest state/city taxes in the country.
The only thing Perdue did was start GA down the slippery slope where Texas/Florida beat us into submission w/ even bigger tax breaks and more educated workforces. We probably should have forced these CEO’s to sign extra long leases at their new HQ’s since none of them bothered to buy since they’ll move on when the corporate welfare dries up.

Here’s the second issue from the earlier article on Deal that I hope the AJC is following up on:
http://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-politics-elections/deal-could-face-financial-613928.html
“In addition to investing about $2 million, the Deals signed papers in December 2005 guaranteeing payment on the first of what would become a series of loans: $506,000 from Gainesville Bank & Trust. Construction began on a 14,000-square-foot metal building, the front of which would be decorated to look like a log cabin.
The loan, backed by the property on Ga. 365, was scheduled to mature in September 2006. But that June, the Deals and the Wilders refinanced, pushing the due date back into the next year.
And in October, they went to another financial institution — Community Bank & Trust of Cornelia — for a second loan of about $1 million, according to documents filed in the Habersham County Courthouse. The Ga. 365 property again served as collateral, along with the Wilders’ home in Demorest.
Wilder Outdoors opened for business on Nov. 24, 2006.
The next summer, the business needed more cash. The Deals signed papers in June 2007 that increased the loan from Community Bank by $252,000. By the time it had been open seven months, the store had accumulated debt totaling almost $1.8 million.
Early in 2008, Wilder Outdoors needed even more money. Community Bank approved a new loan of $2.4 million, with which the Wilders and the Deals paid outstanding debts and provided the business with more capital. They were to make monthly payments of $15,000 for 23 months, according to loan documents, and then pay the remainder — almost $2.3 million — no later than Feb. 1, 2011.
Community Bank, founded in 1900, had come under scrutiny from federal regulators. In the three years since its long-time chief executive had died, the bank’s lending practices had devolved into disarray, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. would later report. Bank officials failed to sufficiently analyze the finances and cash flow of commercial borrowers. They didn’t adequately appraise property used as loan collateral. They didn’t keep track of construction projects their loans were financing. The FDIC would later list numerous instances of what it called “questionable lending activity.”
Regulators shut down Community Bank this January.
When the bank increased the loan for Wilder Outdoors in 2008, it required that the store’s inventory and equipment be listed as additional collateral. The property on Ga. 365, however, remained the primary security, even though it was valued at only about $700,000 — less than one-third the amount of the new loan.”
If you work through the math of all that, Nathan Deal and his wife invested $2 million of equity into the venture. The first 2 loans of approximately $1.5 million were likely intended, along with the cash from the equity investment, to complete construction of the store, fund inventory and also to fund anticipated operating losses for some period of time. The additional loan of $252,000 about 7 months later suggests that operating losses were huge. How do you burn $35,000+ a month of cash running one retail operation? Expenses would be the cost of a few employees (how much were Deal’s daughter and son-in-law drawing in salary?), utilities, interest on the loans of perhaps $10-$15K per month. Were there any customers?
If business results were that bad, how did Deal and/or his daughter and son-in-law manage to convince any banker in an arms length transaction to loan $2.4 million to the business, knowing that $1.8 million of it was immediately going to pay off another bank and possibly other creditors? The FDIC closed the bank that made this large loan and was critical of its lending practices? What are the connections between the principals of the defunct bank and Nathan Deal that would cause them to make such a loan?

Although I applaud that he is not filing bankuptcy, I do not have confidence in a governor who would make subjective business decisions especially regarding his family and their financial needs. What about his children’s responsibility in this? Millions in debt is so overwhelming to me. Where is the sound fiscal judgement we sorely need in our government? How can he stay focused on Georgia’s needs? In the best interests of all he should step down and take care of his family and personal responsibilities. This would show selfless, true integrity.

DP is providing the ONLY constructive thought on the first layer of this onion, regarding Deal and his blatantly shady dealings. Most start up business start small, with low over head than grow over time as their customer base grows. These start ups usually have owner/employees that draw a very small, if any, pittance in a manner to staunch the red ink. Deals daughter married the same type of guy who ran St Simon’s Island deep into debt – big dreams but little common sense business savvy – a case of the emporer wore no clothes – if Deal could not observe this cause & effect – why should I think he would be intelligent enough to run the state?

And now that I think about it, how did a Congressman with a salary of less than $200K per year and a retired wife who is paying for 2 Georgia residences (and presumably owned or rented a place in Washington, D.C. as well while he was in Congress) come up with $2 million to put into one speculative investment? Of course, he had the windfall from his sweetheart salvage yard no bid contract with the state, but $2 million still seems like an awful lot of money.
Even if the money other than from the salvage business was legitimately earned and saved over the years, do we want somebody who would risk wiping himself out with one bad investment decision making decisions about how the state of Georgia should spend its tax revenue?

This guy failed to list millions of dollars of debt on his financial disclosure form. If this was an “oversight” he is incompeting. If it was intentional he is dishonest.
And no, the average Joe doesn’t understand borrowing millions of dollars to support a child and their spouse.
He has been in Washington DC for so long he thinks everybody is a millionaire.

In case anybody thinks I am sympathetic to the Democrats because I am giving reasons why I think Deal is probably a crook, Deal isn’t the only politician who has magically had fantastic returns in real estate over the last 7-8 years while most everybody else has taken a big hit. I don’t like crooks of either party.
Outgoing Senator Chris Dodd (D, Connecticut) has benefitted from a sweetheart real estate purchase that sounds a lot like Deal’s Gainesville purchase to me.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124545642440632999.html
“Now the Irish cottage on 10 scenic acres is bringing more trouble. At the start of the Irish real estate boom in 1994, Mr. Dodd bought the property with William Kessinger for $160,000. Mr. Kessinger has been a business partner of Edward Downe, who is a longtime friend of Mr. Dodd’s. In 1986 Messrs. Dodd and Downe owned a condominium together in Washington. In 1993 Mr. Downe pleaded guilty to insider trading and securities fraud and in 2001, as Bill Clinton was preparing to leave the White House, Mr. Dodd successfully lobbied to get his friend a pardon.
The following year, 2002, Mr. Dodd bought out Mr. Kessinger’s two-thirds share in the house and became the full owner. Mr. Dodd reported to the Irish government that he paid Mr. Kessinger $122,351, and Mr. Dodd says that a bank appraisal that same year valued the property at $190,000. From 2002 to 2007 Mr. Dodd reported its worth at between $100,001 and $250,000 on his annual Senate financial disclosure form.
But Hartford Courant columnist Kevin Rennie began digging this year into the mismatch between what Mr. Dodd paid to Mr. Downe’s business partner to become a full owner and what the property in Ireland was likely worth in 2002 amid the Irish land boom. Last week, when Mr. Dodd filed his annual financial disclosure form, it included a new appraisal from the same appraiser putting the current value of the house at $658,000.”
Something tells me the Wall Street Journal editorial page will be less interested in Deal’s sweetheart real estate purchase than they are in Dodd’s.

Nice try. Address the fact that a federal district court made Georgia make modifications to its Voter ID law, which Georgia did under Handel, before it approved of the law.
That means that on first passages, it was a law that could potentially suppress votes, which is one of the most blatant anti-American propositions I can imagine.

I see nothing wrong with what Barnes supposedly “did” to the teachers. If you are not a good employee, teacher, state worker, garbage man, then why should you be allowed to keep your position. Isn’t that what he was trying to do, cut out their tenure. And as far as the flag, GET OVER IT! It’s said and done, and no governor in their right mind would tackle that issue again.
After all, those two things did cost Governor Barnes his job. And then look what we got, Eight years on a downhill slide.

All tenure means is that the teacher was one step above an “at-will” employee and the school had to show why it was firing the teacher.
Given the extremely political nature of teaching/education, it was designed to protect a teacher from the whims of an administrator who did not like the way the teacher taught US government or literature. With tenure, the administrator would have to show evidence that the teacher was ineffective, not simply fire the teacher because the administrator did not like the teacher’s politics/religion/scientific theories/gender.

Ok, I’ve had it with “But suddenly, of course, the economy turned”! Quit blaming the economy for the failure of that business!! It was a terrible, isolated location to begin with. Did you not learn from the first time when you sank more money in to it? The second time? The third?
“My children have suffered and will continue to suffer the consequences of an effort where they put all of their strengths, all of their time, all of their energies into trying to be a successful small business”
I visited the store on 3 occasions. (Yes, I DID learn my lesson after the third time!) On all 3 occasions, I waited at least 10 minutes before I was asked if I needed any help. On all 3 occasions the employee was very short, lackadaisical, and rude. On the 3rd trip I told my wife this place won’t make it. It didn’t. Please, please, quit blaming the economy. If this is how he “does business”, this is not the person I want for Governor of Georgia!!!

Even though Georgia does not have a “Teacher’s Union” so to speak, they have the Georgia Association of Educators (I think that is the name) which is a very large and powerful group. Barnes didn’t stand a chance between that group and the flaggers. I think he was trying to do the right thing, but it cost him the election. I would have thought lessons had been learned in this last eight years. Integrity is something that is very hard to earn and easily lost. It seems like a lot of the people around the state have forgotten what integrity even means. And to even consider voting for someone who can’t manage their own funds to manage the states is absolutely unbelievable to me. The addition of Mr. Deal appearing to have some memory problems too is just a bad combination.

Peachy, The teachers and the flaggers were not mad because of what Roy did they were mad because he stood before them and told them he was not going to do what he ended up doing. That is called a bold face lie and is the reason so many went to the polls to vote him out of office. He has now went before the teachers and told them no more furlough, I will give you a 6% raise every year and will re instate all of the state money for your special certifications. These promises will cost between 1 and 3 billion dollars. How is he going to pay for it? Do you think the citizens (Republican controlled legislature) is going to raise our taxes this much so he can keep these promises and do you think he already knows this? I can hear him now say that I tried to keep my promises but the republicans did not let me. It is just another bold face lie he is telling to get elected. Now where is the integrity in this?

“The loans he co-signed on an outdoor store were made to support his daughter and her husband,”
And he couldn’t see after the 2nd or 3rd loan that good money was just being thrown after bad? I mean that is the whole reason Community Bank & Trust was shut down was due to unethical lending practices. And I quote the AJC’s own article:
“it became apparent that the bank lacked management depth.” The inspector general’s report knocked Community Bank for lacking internal controls over its lending operations, “which likely contributed to inappropriate lending activities that were associated with substantial losses.”

There is a solution to this sad mess. yes, nathan misled us all. Take out the fact that he tried to help his daughter – that is what most any father would do. He can not halp what happened there. But he knew about the loans, he knew about his own business loans and he knew he was taking income from a business. He failed to disclose all this and when he was just about to be labeled the Charlie Rangle of the GOP, he left congress in the dark of the night with his tail tucked between his legs to run for governor. He should have come clean then – he may still have been the nominee but at least all voters would have know what they were ultimately voting for. Now he can’t leave the ticket or republicans will have no one to vote for. So keep him on the ticket but make the face of the race Casey Cagle. All republicans redouble their efforts to elect Nathan with the agreement that once elected he will take the oath of office and then immediately resign and Lieutenant governor Cagle will assume the office of Governor. At least he can begin governing from day one while Deal will not only have to learn about state government but at the same time devote much of his personal time to defending and attempting to straighten out his own personal mess. So either vote for Nathan with the agreement he will leave and Casey Cagle can be governor or have Roy Barnes 4 more years. It is a simple decision if nathan will finally man up and do the honorable thing.

How do you think all that would have gone over?
He’s going with the age old strategy for scandal ridden politicians now. Deny deny deny. Obfuscate, lie, spin, wrap yourself in God and family, talk about how the press is lying about you and try to change the subject by hammering your opponent with attack ads. What Mr. Barnes “supposedly” did to teachers has been blown way out of proportion. Even when he ran against Perdue, much of what was said was half truths political jargon promoted by the Republicans. Over time, his “sins” have grown just like a game of gossip without evidence to back them up. Yes, he wasn’t a sweetheart to teachers, but he was much better than what we’ve seen the last 8 years.
There is a republican agenda to destroy the public schools, and if Deal signed his allegiance to this party, then this is his agenda, also. If voters mistakenly think that Mr. Barnes was bad for education, with Deal, the worst is yet to come.

lets look – your daughter asks to borrow $$ to start a nice idea business – a Cabelas knock off, with local flavor. She had never run a retail store, nor has her husband (assumption – now -we the people actually want to know how much of a bozo was Nathan Deal). What do most parents do? Offer their kids 5, maybe 20 thousand – start up money. Once the business is thriving & they want to expand, we can help some more – that would be the logical process. Deals daughter & hubby? They build a free standing 14000 square foot store in the middle of nowhere, with no customer base. It appears they spent 2 million to build & stock the store. The land & METAL (crap, cheap) building are worth $700,000 (not really – its been on the market for what? 14 months?) did the stock & interior really cost 1.3 million? Then, two years later, the business needed another infusion of cash – that is almost impossible IF THE ORIGINAL STOCK RETAIL had been paid for. Has anybody here been to that store? How nice was the interior? REally a Cabelas/Bass Pro shop knock off? The $$$ was squandered, no matter HOW YOU CUT THE BALONEY.
Thus – do you want a man who squandered this kind of money on a dumb business venture running this state? DO YOU? Barnes IS NOT A LIBERAL DEMOCRAT – he is a white Dixiecrat – which mean financially conservative, socially conservative. The teachers in this state are hosing the taxpayer – how many are making over $60,000 in your local BOE? With 2 months off in summer, 3 week long vacations scatter throughout the year – and, many still need a parapro to teach 20 kids – this is an unsustainable business model – which is why many teachers have been laid off, and class sizes have increase. You connect this with sweet heart medical care and great retirement, and you have a sector of government employees feeding at the trough – one of the three legs MUST be adjusted.

Where would you rather be poor? The eighth floor of a NY public housing tenement or a single wide in Carroll County on an acre of land?
Where would you rather own a 1600 square foot house? Montville, NJ or Tallapoosa, GA? Property tax: Montville, NJ: $10,000; Tallapoosa, GA: $1600.

And, what services are you talking about? Almost all small towns (even as small as 3000 people – where there is NO congestion, NO crime, NO pollution/smog) – have standard services – water, sewer, recreation – what other elitest “services” are you demanding? The school system in Haralson County produces lawyers & doctors – how much higher quality of school system do you desire? Your arrogance is reflected in your President, as is the elitism. Your county/city has a very high rate of crime – mostly murder – is that an element that drew you to the location? Do you enjoy the traffic congestion? The inability to operate a good sanitary sewer system? The pollution? I am not enticed by these things, nor the need to throw away $12,000 on precisely what expanded services? Grady hospital? Don’t let him or any other win and sit in that office and shame it any more. Tell your leaders you want to put a legislation bill in November that prevents this from happening. Do it folks. Well Paddy O just reading all you have written shows why people treat tea party people with such distain.
Bribed to live in Atlanta, you think all the business owners and multi millionaires live there because they can’t find jobs elsewhere? what planet are you on? many corporation owners and highly paid professionals can live anywhere they want and it sure isn’t going to be a backward place with neighbours like Deal or near illeducated illinformed teaparties.
Thats why there are so many multi million dollar houses in Atlanta and so many right wing fools living in trailers in rural GA blaming everything on the blacks or jews or carpetbaggers or satan or whatever else they come up with.
Also in case you didn’t know we are in a world economy and if the rest of the world has problems with us then it will trickle down financially. Obama has a much better grasp on this than Bush ever did. Have you ever actually travelled anywhere outside of GA?
Anyone who names their kid Trig is an idiot period. How can this be in question?
BTW who mentioned abortion and god?
Sorry Paddy O but you typify everything wrong with this country and what got us in a recession to begin with………

td – I voted for Chapman & Handel – would have voted for Eric Johnson. Deal & Ox were just to bloody crooked. I also remember the old democrats of Murphy & Barnes – they ARE NOT liberals like Obozo, so that argument goes out the window – last time around I would have voted for Cathy Cox (old SOS), but never for Taylor. I always thought Perdue never expected to win and was way in over his head. Jonathan though is a liberal elitest shallow snob.

td no quesion the schools you mentioned are great, but they are the exception and you need to be pretty weathy to live in those districts
I am lucky and can use the local public school but will probably have to choose between some of those mentioned when they get older,
what makes you think I want to redistribute weath? I don’t, I atually think we should raise sales tax in Atlanta to pay for more infrastructure
BTW I voted for Bush first time around and Purdue………

Georgians need to realize that the state BOE is screwing the entire state by allowing non-college bound students to take the SAT – it makes it look like our public schools stink, which maybe they do. But this policy is profoundly foolish.

Well things like Marta, sidewalks, streetlamps, parks, worldclass resturants and arts all within walking distance are good. So is one of the few decent schools in the state. I seriuosly think we save a lot of money just by not having to drive 20 miles to get anywhere and am healthier for walking. When I fly I pay $5 on the Marta, friends pay $15 a day to park or $100 for a cab as they don’t live near a station.
Just so you know I don’t enjoy paying taxes and think they should be equalized throughout the state.
When you think about it a great proportion of Atlantas problems with congestion and polution are caused by people commuting into the area anyway.
I do agree with you about the SAT.
Anyway we are way off topic this is about Deal and he is a disgrace to the GOP and GA.

the same can be said about all urbanized areas – taxes do not go down as you would think with the increase of population density. thus, growth is very, very bad. I don’t miss all those things you mentioned – so, my place is better for me & cheaper (far more economical). ATL has too much pollution, congestion & fatal crimes – as most urban places do. Regarding high flying states & their dem governors – look at California, plus NJ has a repub gov & has had frequently in the last 40 years.

Now, the equalized statement indicates you are chummy with the socialism of obummer. State taxes are equalized – each governmental entity has its own source of taxes. For those with highly educated people who think too big, too Utopian, their local taxes are huge to pay for those pollyanna urges – it is reflected in you paying $10,000 more than I do – and for me, there is NO benefit. I want to get out of paying school taxes because I have no kids.

Paddy O, Off the subject, but I agree with you that as long as states are going to be compared on the basis of SAT scores, students not going to college or technical school (any higher education) should not take the SAT or ACT, but school systems have no control over who takes these test. Students register on line, and school systems cannot control who signs up. Sorry. We have to take what we get.

the sad part – GA white democrats are smarter than their republican colleagues – each year, Perdue selects the estimate for economic growth over the upcoming fiscal year – each year under Murphy, the state picked the lowest growth #. That way, when the supplemental (mid year) budget was considered, there was a big slush fund to do fun projects with. Perdue, even when he knew the next year would be flat or recessive, never picked the lowest #. Plus, Perdue floated a billion worth of bonds every year – that will come back & bite us hard – and, he never addressed mass transit nor water reservoir construction. amazingly inept.

Barnes is the same type of liberal that Obama is. I worked for the state during his first term in office and I can tell you he placed the same type of people to run the agencies as Obama does now. Nathan Deal is a good man and is most likely and honourable man for wanting to pay his debts and not filing bankrupcy. I have empathy for Nathan Deal as we have all had financial difficulty. However, when I myself had financial difficulty in my life I was not focused and I did not make wise decisions. Praise God, my family go thru that time. However, having known what it is like to have the pressure of overwhelming debt, how in the world can Mr. Deal be focused on the things that are most important to Georgians like reducing unemployment and reducing our debt. Unfortunately, Nathan Deal is not ready to be governor. He needs to put his focus on getting his financial house in order. The he can focus our fixing the problems in our state.

There is a fee to take both the SAT and ACT, and it is not cheap but less than $100. The ACT is cheaper than the SAT. My information on the price is not handy or I would quote the exact amount. Also, information on these tests is given to all student through announcements, flyers, and posters, but counselors do not advise individual students to sign up.

I don’t know percentages taking these tests, and each county will be different. This test is open to junior and senior students at the same sitting, and no distinction (in reporting) is made between the two groups. Most students also take them more than once as they are offered several times a year. Statewide (I think) over 63,000 took it last year. One state (our West) only had 50 students take the SAT year before last.

These two loans are not personal loans they are BUSINESS LOANS to aid in expanding a profitable business.
These loans are to Gainesville Salvage with a CONTINGENT LIABILITY to Nathan Deal and Ken Cronan which means these loans are backed by collateral form Gainesville Salvage and Nathan and Ken are second to this collateral.
Loan one is for $2.5 Million to purchase another auto salvage yard in Metter Georgia and is collateralized by a 34-acre property and commercial buildings and equipment valued at $5 million. This is 50% loan to value which is EXTREMELY STRONG.
Loan 2 was a $350,000 loan for an adjacent office building at their Gainesville location which is collateralized by the building and 3.4 acres valued at $574,000. This is a 61% loan to value which is also EXTREMELY STRONG.
Both of these loans are PERFORMING LOANS and all payments have been made on time and will be in the future.
This is a thriving business that creates tax revenue for the state, provides needed services to the state and because of these expansions has led to the addition of 10 NEW JOBS to the area.
This is hard for many on the left to understand because most of them have never worked in the private sector. Basic economics teaches us that to efficiently grow a business you have to leverage your capital. This is done by debt. Most people think debt is a bad thing in business. Any successful business person will tell you that to effectively grow a business it is sometimes necessity to incur some debt. The problem that small businesses have had in recent times is lack of accessibility to leverage their capital through tools such as this. Nathan and Ken were able to get these loans because of the EXTREMELY STRONG Loan to Value and STRONG FINANCIAL HEALTH of their business.
I apologize to the democrats on this list for using so many big words. I hope I did not give any of you a stroke for using such complicated economics in this post but that is the way business is conducted.
I know most of you you on this list are slow but I still think you can derive from my post above where my vote will be placed.

True Republican: No one has disputed the loan ratio to his salvage business. Its the fact he did not disclose it that is the issue as you well know.
Please stop trying to muddy the waters the issue is very clear to eveyone.
Why don’t you tell us about the other loans he is foreclosing on? I would love to hear the good business sense in the hunting store loan. Also how he qualified for it aswell? Also how Deals part in helping a bank close down costing the state 135 million dollars is good for business?
While your at it please tell all the Republicans who voted for Handle why this wasn’t disclosed before the run off?
Also as a business man please tell me if you would let Deal manage your business and sleep well at night?
By your posting you seem smart enough to know that Deal is a crook you just don’t seem ready to face the fact…………..

Some people use big words but do not know what they mean. Economics is the social science that analyzes the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. Bankers are financial intermediary that accepts deposits and channels those deposits into lending activities. Some economist work for banks to follow investment and market trends, but no bankers work for economists.

The State of Georgia is the worst place to use as an example regarding banking practices. Why don’t we hear from the GOPONO or the liberal press that US taxpayers are going to cover $1 trillion in Georgia bank losses. These banks used “no rules, just lend” loan practices and were fostered on by the Perdue when he got rid of the predatory lending laws.

Most of the Georgia banks, located in mostly conservative areas, closed by FDIC have been bought by out-of-state banks. Why? It looks like their state legislators did not use them as their own private piggy-banks as much as Georgia.

Nathan Deal should withdraw from the race for governor and give his Republican nomination to Karen Handel. While I would have an extremely difficult time voting for anyone that aligns themselves with Sarah Palin, it is the right thing to do for the Republican party and the state of Georgia. Nathan Deal needs to do the right thing.
While not debating the reasons or sanity for all of the loans Nathan Deal is on the hook for, there is no debate that the weight of his financial burden will keep him from solely concentrating on the business of running the state. People facing such daunting financial crisis often can’t eat, can’t sleep, can’t focus and are sick to their stomach trying to figure a way out of their mess. Nathan Deal needs to be spending every waking hour working in his private business trying to figure a way to make enough money to avoid bankruptcy. There is no way that Nathan Deal can deal with his personal financial issues while giving the State of Georgia the attention we deserve.
