Former RNC chairman and Bush campaign manager says he’s gay

From Marc Ambinder at The Atlantic:

Ken Mehlman, President Bush’s campaign manager in 2004 and a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, has told family and associates that he is gay.

Mehlman arrived at this conclusion about his identity fairly recently, he said in an interview. He agreed to answer a reporter’s questions, he said, because, now in private life, he wants to become an advocate for gay marriage and anticipated that questions would arise about his participation in a late-September fundraiser for the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER), the group that supported the legal challenge to California’s ballot initiative against gay marriage, Proposition 8.

“It’s taken me 43 years to get comfortable with this part of my life,” said Mehlman, now an executive vice-president with the New York City-based private equity firm, KKR. “Everybody has their own path to travel, their own journey, and for me, over the past few months, I’ve told my family, friends, former colleagues, and current colleagues, and they’ve been wonderful and supportive. The process has been something that’s made me a happier and better person. It’s something I wish I had done years ago.”

Be sure to read the entire article. But this is the tidbit that’s likely to tick many gays and lesbians off:

Mehlman acknowledges that if he had publicly declared his sexuality sooner, he might have played a role in keeping the party from pushing an anti-gay agenda.

“It’s a legitimate question and one I understand,” Mehlman said. “I can’t change the fact that I wasn’t in this place personally when I was in politics, and I genuinely regret that. It was very hard, personally.” He asks of those who doubt his sincerity: “If they can’t offer support, at least offer understanding.”

Well Ken, you will have to spend the next 20 years of your life working hard for your movement to repair the damage you did to it over the last 10 years.

Self hating gays are a sad group.

He wants to become an advocate for gay marriage…………………….

I would love to hear what he thought about gay marriage during the 2004 presidential campaign.

Good for him! It takes a lot of courage to do something like that, and even more so being associated with a group of vile, hate-spewing maniacs like the rePUKElicans.

This is a prime example of how Gary rights is not equal to Civil Rights for Blacks. Imagine a black person promoting an administration that was for segregation or against the basic rights of blacks. It would be absurd. But for this Gay man being gay was not as important as things like tax cuts for the rich, etc. Give me a break!!!!

I’m glad Ken had the courage to do that. So I wonder if the news media and gay rights people will treat him the same way black conservatives get treated? For any conservative gay people out there, check out GOProud.

I thought this was the party of family values, but you now find out they are all liars, Cheeters and abusers. They are Gay, and denies it participating in the hypocrosy by fighting against all initiatives put forward to support americans who were honest to declare their beliefs.

This is just about Civil Rights in deed. You are telling tax paying, law abiding citizens that they cant apply for a license nothing more nothing less. In addition the biggest Racist in this country secretly had a black Mistress and that was Thurmond. People who are the Biggest Homophobics either have problem with their own sexuality or feel as though they can have some type of power over others.

This is another reason why I dont like the Rethuglicans because they hide in the closet with
Evangelicals and then bully others behind the scenes. I cant stand the fact that Ken helped to spread hate amongst the public and fear.
Example” When Bush was first put into office(note voted in) – Georgia put the gay marriage issue to a vote. Ok it didnt pass. However, I am going to list some of the ignorant statements I heard from
Rethuglicans as to why they voted against the measure:

We will wind up paying for their healthcare because they have AIDS
They will go after our little boys ( as if the catholic church didnt have that on lock and even though 90 percent of pediphiles are straight men.
They will want to get married in our churches
Children shouldn’t be adopted by these types of people( there are over 14000 kids awaiting adoption in Georgia and there is never a large scale – Rethuglican faction adopting)

These are some of the comments heard first hand. Ignorance will kill and we continue to allow these Jerks to spread hate and then say oh my bad Im apart of the group your against.

@ Thyra…and being a Repub should not mean you are automatically against gay rights but if you ARE gay…and trust me, he knew before now that he was…you should not be supporting agendas that are detrimental to your well being.

Unless you’re gay, you have no idea what it means to come to terms with this. And what makes it most difficult? Just read that bulk of the responses here. Two types of people who are still – and will always be – OK to hate… gays and overweight people. If you’re fat and gay, kill yourself now – you’re never gonna make it.

@Ellea. It isn’t that living his life as a homosexual was less important than “tax cuts for the rich, etc.” It’s that he felt he needed to hide who he was to be accepted. That is point to be taken from this. Also, just because gay rights don’t equate perfectly to African American rights (as in same discriminations, etc), doesn’t mean that it isn’t a civil rights issue…just as women’s rights issues did not perfectly equate to African American rights issues. They were, and still are, all civil rights issues.

Ellea, get a copy of James Weldon Johnson’s autobiography and read it. Yes, there were blacks who could pass for white, ignored the plight of fellow blacks and benefitted from their faux whiteness. You may also want to read Richard Wright’s “Black Boy” and pay close attention to how he describes his granmother’s actions.

Maybe he was a member of the 40,000,000 strong Reverend Haggard born again Christian church?

Do you think he joined Senator Larry Craig (Republican) in an airport stall?

Perhaps he can get the gay cure from ‘Focus on the Family’ founder Rekers?

I think i can speak for a good portion of folks when i say “Who cares?” so i guess congrats on coming out and hope you enjoy your newfound freedom in life. I don’t know WHY folks insist on making it such a big issue or hold a press conference when someone comes out of the closet. it’s not a big deal anymore…it really isn’t. i don’t care what political alter you worship at (or what religious alter you worship at either), it’s your own damn business.

Nothing is new to all of us as Citizens of these United States of America! We have been hit hard by unemployment; banks stealing, investment company paying CEO millions; billion of tax dollars going all over the place and overseas, official cheating, congressmen and representatives sitting in office doing nothing but living fat and continuing watching America become a III world country. So, if Mr. Ken Mehlman want’s to tell all of us he is gay….that is fine! Nothing will ever suprise us about people, places and thngs ever again, in fact, we are living to exspect things such as I have described hit America now and even again. Those who we elect to serve the people of these United States should focus on doing just that rather than trying to save face by sending all of our tax dollars everywhere but the United States of America…they should focus on putting jobs at the forefront where we can get America rolling again, that is not important, but watch them jump on Mr. Mehlman!

There were Jew guards at the camps too.
