Andrew Young: ‘Nobody with any common sense wants Beverly Hall to resign’

Former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young has come out swinging in defense of city School Superintendent Beverly Hall, who has been fielding calls for her resignation in the wake of the CRCT cheating scandal.

Here’s the video from Fox5/WAGA-TV last night:

Said Young:

“There’s nobody that’s got any common sense and concern for the future of the city of Atlanta that would call for the resignation of this woman.”

And how does Young explain all those erasures?

“I don’t. I don’t care. I’m not worried about the test scores. I know that everywhere I go, I find students from Atlanta public schools doing well….

“Give me subpoena power and point out any institution in the world, any institution in this city, and I can find [something] to put somebody in jail, or to raise a lot of fuss and to keep you all in the news…..”

““Give me subpoena power and point out any institution in the world, any institution in this city, and I can find [something] to put somebody in jail, or to raise a lot of fuss and to keep you all in the news…..”

That is hyperbole I suppose. Surely, Dr. Young doesn’t believe that every organization in the entire world has corruption.

But anyway, unless someone can point to Dr. Hall’s participation or encouragment in this cheating, then its not her fault.

As long as the “students” learn to follow direction, we will all be okay. Not one of those low-class kids will ever be my or my children’s boss so who cares.

Ms. Hall’s tenure with the school system has enabled her to understand its strenths and weaknesses and she should be allowed to continue to move the system forward. It is just ignorant (or political) to call for her to resign. Unless her participation in the alleged deception can be proven, she should stay. The school principals should stay also, unless you can prove their physical involvement or knowledge of what was alleged to have transpired. Overall, those type tests should be administered by outside entities, then delivered to their final destination under lock and key. A better way of managing the process should be instituted.

If she leaves, she leaves. All this stuff happened on her watch. Maybe change would be a god thing? I don’t think the progress has been what the APS says it’s been based in the manipulation of the figures. Who knows?

Lacking common sense, I guess I am nuts to believe that test scores mean something. Stacking the deck, to remove problem students from buildings, inflating graduation rates, changing test scores I guess are not serious for those who do not value substantive change in schools. Call me really stupid here, but I have this rather old-fashioned notion that parents should expect, no demand more for their children. It is good though that Young has found Atlanta alumni who are doing well. That sounds like a great reason to retain someone with Hall’s record. Give me a break!

Dr. Young, on the contrary, common sense suggests that cheaters and liars should not exhaulted to positions of prominence and power in any community or endeavor and is what is wrong on so many levels of the political processes today. Children need to know and an example need to be set that such behavior will be met with swift and just reprisal, especially so in light of recent events as Wallstreet, Enron, Madoff, Bonds and Clemens to just name a few. Beverly Hall is a discrace and should be treated as such! That is common sense!

What Andy is saying is that Beverly is small potatoes in a city as corrupt as this. And as for erasures . . . isn’t that what we’ve been doing for decades? I say promote her to the airport and let bygones be bygones.

It’s official: Andy Young has finally lost his mind. His argument basically boils down to this: there is corruption and cheating and law breaking all throughout the City of Atlanta government. Why pick on this woman for it?

Thanks, Andy. Very positive message to send to the youths of the city. Everybody cheats, just be sure you don’t get caught.

Maybe Hall didn’t know about it. Fine. But that does not exonerate her. As superintendent, maybe she *should* know about it and prevent it. If it happens under her watch, she is ultimately the one responsible. I’m not saying she should necessarily be fired. But she is the one in charge and therefore the one to be held accountable in addition to all those who actively participated, knew about participation, or should have known.

Hall and her executives trumpeted every positive score, percentage and data point, as proof that their methods were working. As they did so, they demanded more and more money for themselves, and for those who ‘produced’ those numbers. They claimed they and their ideas were the reason the scores and rates improved so dramatically.
Now that every single number they have ever used is being called into question, as the assumptions behind the items are exposed and the data itself shown to be falsified, they are distancing themselves from those numbers, claiming it must be the work of ‘misdirected employees’ that led to the falsified outcomes.
They can’t have it both ways: if they were responsible for the (supposed) rise in scores and graduation rates, they are responsible for the falsification of tests and data.

“ignorant” , “lack common sense”. The defenders of Hall and her lack of leadership at key moments are out in force. No one can pry her out of the APS with strong defenders like Young. But the defense of Hall can’t undo the serious and continuing damage to the APS caused by Hall’s leadership. It seems the power structure would rather have Hall and the fiction of progress than face the truth and actually make progress for the kids.

Denise, that is the dumbest thing I have seen written here in a long time. Dr. Hall and some principals may not have been personally involved but they had authority and responsibility and failed miserably. Can them all, set an example, insist that rules will be followed and things will improve.

Andrew Young lost all credibility when he participated in that radio commercial four years ago telling Atlanta’s black voters that if they didn’t get out to vote for John Eaves for Fulton County Commission Chair that we would be back to the days of fire hoses and police dogs being unleashed on them. Why African American “leaders” have to defend their own despite mediocrity, failure and corruption is the worst kind of cronyism and a man of his caliber and achievement should not have stooped so low.

alphabet guy – so, test scores & graduation rates go up, Hall gets applause and a bonus. Further investigation turns out the test scores went up when teachers changes wrong answers to right, and the graduation rate went up because unknown administrators erroneously coded drop outs as transfers – and you think both of these things occured without her knowledge? This bimbo is from NJ – look up the UMDNJ scandal – high level administraters from NJ are professional rip off artists. Unless of course, it is just that the citizens of Atlanta don’t give a crap that almost the entire School system is immoral and corrupt?

Apparantely, Kathy Cox had no idea that the overpaid teachers and administrators would cheat the system to keep their money flowing.

I listened to the interview with the company that conducted the investigation into the erasure scandal last week. The company hired to conduct the investigation Caveon Test Security is a nationally recognized company for it’s expertise in this area, also KPMG LLP, an independant nationally recognized auditing firm with significant forensic investigation expertise was hired was asked to assist.

With this type of expertise they came up with their findings and the GOSA is not happy.

This seems to me to be very strange if your nationally recognized investigative team didn’t give you the answers you were looking for you decide to go further with another investigation.

So I ask, what’s really going on?

Andrew Young told the truth for once. He doesn’t care.

The fact of the matter is, Andy Young and his cronies could care less about the children of Atlanta. Andy Young doesn’t care that Peyton Forest, an elementary school that feeds into the middle school named for his late wife, is among the Dirty Dozen list of schools with high erasures. Andy Young and his crowd of elitists don’t care that the children of Capitol View, Sylvan Hills and Dixie Hills have been robbed of their one shot at a quality of education. The only thing that matters to Andy Young and his cronies is that they continue to have access to APS consulting and catering contracts.

Not only does Andrew Young not care about our children’s achievement, he doesn’t care that there is an open air drug market in front of his brother’s dentistry office and less than a mile from his own house. He doesn’t care that the neighborhood adjacent to his own has been terrorized by burglaries and home invasions. Andy Young doesn’t care about anything but maintaining influence for his friends and benefactors.

As far as Andrew Young is concerned, the children of our city are on their own.

Quoting Mr. Young –

“You see those are the people who have been overcharging us,” he said of the owners of the small stores, “and they sold out and moved to Florida. I think they’ve ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it’s Arabs.”

I think our schools would be better run by any randomly selected Korean Grocer than by someone wholeheartedly supported by Andrew Young.

As for the “prove that Hall did anything” crowd, I ask of you the same question. Prove to all of us that she did anything. I ask of you that after the 11(?) years that she has held the position, what are her real accomplishments? You can nix test scores, obviously. Also looks like you can nix graduation rates. What’s left? Seriously, I am asking. If anything, the city schools’ rating on test scores and graduation rate improvements that may be real, may very well be associated with so much of the city’s public housing being demolished. So I ask, what can she personally point to as a real accomplishment that has earned her the position she has held and maintained these 10+ years? And I will not accept awards and presidential appointments received as a response because those were all received upon false pretenses as far as I am concerned.

And this from the very same Andrew Young who was on a John Eaves radio ad that predicted that if Eaves was not elected this city would see the return of police dogs and fire hoses. Of course we know he means only those headed by white leadership. Can you say “circling the wagons”?

For all of you idiots who continue to play the race card (SorryAzzWhiteBoyz) and never have anything positive to say about Atlanta or those who have been elected or appointed to run the city, there are plenty of flights out of town (from the busiest and best airport in the world) and plenty of UHAUL trucks to help you move. Leave now and let us natives handle our city! I am sick and tired of you right wing nuts moving here from your ugly, cold, racist, boring, white, depressed, dirty, undiverse, ignorant and simple minded cities and states! If Atlanta is so corrupt (that is code word for it is run by black people) then leave! You moved here because you so a vibrant economy, got a job, thought it was a great place to raise a family, etc. Now you want to blast folk with you mean comments. Shame on you. Take your butts back up North or back to the cold plain Midwest, or back to country azz Tenn, NC, etc. You make me sick!

Now, what Andy is saying is: Beverly Hall has done a great job of improving morale in APS, getting the kids to actually attend school, and raising graduation rates and grades. The “tests” were altered not by her. Let me say that again, Dr. Hall did not alter the test, some of her principals did.

I fired an employee for stealing not to long ago. Should I be fired because she (she was white by the way) worked for me and I was not on top of her when she did it. I have several employees and I tell them, it is documented in the procedures manual, and they all know NOT TO STEAL, but she STILL STOLE!

Dr. Hall is in the same position. Give her a chance to make the changes necessary to ensure that this does not happen again and to continue her work.

Sonny Perdue is on a witchhunt while he has done nothing for the school system and teachers except divert money away and furlow and fire teachers! Typical Republican… Let’s put the money into fishing instead, that makes a lot of sense. That is the common sense that Andy is talking about you idiots! We should put more money into the school system to make sure these kids get an education so that they are productive citizens, not slam and condemn a woman who has worked her butt off, but has some employees who have not done the right thing.

Again, if you don’t like Atlanta, fine, LEAVE AND DON’T COME BACK EVER!!! WE DON’T NEED YOU HERE IN OUR HORRIBLE, CORRUPT, CITY….. CHILD PLEEZ……

If I was the parent of a child in the Atlanta school system, I would be extremely upset at the news of the cheating. The victims of the cheating are the children – they have been cheated out of an education by substandard teachers and an apparent uncaring school administration. Andy Young doesn’t care as much for the children as he does Hall and her continued employment. Something isn’t right with this picture . . .

Mr. Young must have a most unusual list of places he frequents to be able to truthfully say “everywhere I go, I find students from Atlanta public schools doing well”. The facts: APS is at the bottom of the state that is at the bottom of the nation, and still can’t graduate 50% of its high school students. I guarantee that students from APS are far more likely to be found incarcerated in the Fulton County Jail or on the unemployment line than in the law firms, high end restaurants, exclusive clubs and PR offices that Mr. Young inhabits. Or even as employees in APS.

But he doesn’t care that those same students are being cheated out of their only hope of improvement and that taxpayers are being defrauded of the honest services of their public servants and the intended use of their confiscated tax dollars. Mr. Young is happy to write all of that off, to shrug off the appalling educational failures of APS, and in fact to accept the long history of corruption that has scalded the City of Atlanta just as long as power remains in a few greedy black hands and the $17,401 provided for each APS students, 78% more than the average Georgia student receives and 70% more than the US average, keeps flowing away from the kids and towards a well-connected few.

I agree with him on one point, though. Mr. Young and I both think that “There’s nobody that’s got any common sense and concern for the future of the city of Atlanta that would call for the resignation of this woman.” If she resigns, we’ll have to pay her bloated pension until she dies. All bonuses she has received based on test scores should be clawed back immediately, concurrent with a criminal investigation for fraud. She should be prosecuted, fired, fined and jailed, along with her arrogant, perfidious staff. Resignation is far too gentle.
